Roe

In 2014 was ik voor de tweede keer op Shetland. (klik hier wanneer je het toch nog even terug wilt lezen). Ik wandelde toen op Muckle Roe. Mooi, groen, rood en lekker rustig. 

 Back in 2014, I was on Shetland soil for the second time. (click here if you want to read about it again). I walked on Muckle Roe; it's green, red, silent and very pretty. 

 Genoeg inspiratie voor een nieuw patroon. Omdat zo'n eiland alleen maar uit rotsen bestaat met gras, heide en schapen (en wat mensen) er op, begin je op andere manieren te kijken. Structuren, kleuren, dieptes. 

 Plenty of inspiration for a new pattern. Because the island consists of rock with only grass, heather and sheep (and some people)living on it, you start to look at things in a different way. Structures, colours, perspectives, depth perception.

Dit garen is van Fyberspates (100% Cashmere) maar helaas niet meer leverbaar. Ik vond de kleur zo mooi en het patroon leek erg op het landschap van Muckle Roe. Jammer genoeg had ik al wat gemaakt met het garen, dus ik moest ander garen zoeken bij dit ontwerp. 

The yarn for this design was by Fyberspates (100% Cashmere) but unfortunately discontinued. I liked the colour very much as it resembled the landscape of Muckle Roe.
Also, I'd run out of yarn for a full shawl, I had played with the cashmere before... So I could use this for another yarn. 

In juni gaf ik een workshop in Limburg bij Het Wolbeest. Het leek me leuk op speciaal voor de workshop een nieuw patroontje te ontwikkelen en Alexandra was van plan om speciaal garen te verven. Ik koos fris groen! En dat bleek prima te passen bij het patroontje wat ik al had. 

In June I gave a workshop in Limburg at Het Wolbeest. I thought it would be fun to create a new design for the workshop to practise on and Alexandra was planning to dye some wool especially for the occassion. I chose a fresh green! And that was very suitable for the pattern I already had started on. 

 Het zijn 2 eenvoudige kantpatronen die in elkaar overlopen. Maar in het ene patroontje zit wat reliëf met averechte steken aan de voorkant. Zo wordt het niet saai en wisselen ze elkaar netjes af. Je kunt dus eigenlijk ook kiezen om maar 1 patroontje te gebruiken voor de hele shawl.

I've used 2 simple lace patterns, which flow into one and another very smoothly. The 'second' pattern has a bit of depth to it, with purled stitches in the front. This way, alternating the patterns keeps it interesting and you can even choose to use just one for an overall pattern. 



Een eenvoudige rand die aan wordt gebreid en je hebt een mooie zachte fris groene shawl! (of een andere kleur die je leuk vind).

Adding a basic patterned edge and you can wear a very nice fresh green shawl! (or any other colour you choose!)

Heritage Scarf

Soms heb je even zin in een project wat niet zo groot is. Een lange shawl is eigenlijk mijn favoriete vorm om te breien. Je kunt er best veel in kwijt, patronen kunnen mooi over lopen en je bent snel heen en weer! En dat zelfs dát uit de hand kan lopen bleek laatst.

Ik wilde een ontwerp maken wat een redelijk eenvoudig patroon had en met kleine verschillen zou overlopen in een ander patroon. Bovendien was het weer tijd voor een ColourMart wedstrijd! Ik heb genoeg liggen en ik koos voor 'Acacia'. Het ontwerp was nog lang niet af, maar ik was alvast wel begonnen. (foto hier onder, met life-line)

Sometimes you just want to knit something that is not so big. With 'no end in sight'... That's why my favorite shape for a shawl is a rectangle. You can put in lots of patterns, or not, and make them continue gently into something else. Bonus is the quick return row. Only a 100+ stitches and you can turn the needles again. But even that can run out of control!

I wanted a rather simple design, with subtle differences and easy to remember/repeat. Besides, it was time for another famous ColourMart contest! I have plenty laying around that was planned for something else anyway. I chose the 'Acacia' and started immediately, even though the design wasn't complete yet. (photo above with life-line)

 Ik had beter moeten weten. Na 5 herhalingen bleek dat het óf een korte shawl zou worden, of er iets anders moest gebeuren. Het garen was onderdeel van een 'skein-set'. 5 kortere strengen van hetzelfde soort garen in verschillende kleuren. Maar welke volgorde te kiezen?
Ik kon natuurlijk meer bestellen, ik had het niet aan tijd om het uit te halen en overnieuw te beginnen met een andere kleur... Dan maar verder met wat ik heb.

I should have known better. After 5 repeats it appeared I would run short or that the shawl would be a very short scarf. The yarn was part of a 'skein-set'. Five skeins with less yardage but in a similar colour range (not always the case, though!). But in which order should I use them? I could have ordered more of a single colour, or frog what I had so far and start over... But I didn't.

Ik koos er voor om licht en donker af te wisselen. Zo komt de prachtig diepe Mocha kleur in het midden. Of in de nek of voor aan bij het gezicht, zo wordt het niet zo gauw smoezelig. Dat patroon was eerst lastig om te kiezen. Patroon 1 en 2 leken genoeg op elkaar om soepel over te lopen. Na heel veel knoeien was de uiteindelijke keus verrassend eenvoudig. "Gewoon" het zij patroon laten terug komen zodat het uiteindelijk allemaal met elkaar verbonden wordt.

I chose to alternate with the colours, dark and light. That meant the gorgeous Mocha (above) would be used in the centre. Convenient, because when you wrap the scarf around, it will be in the neck or close to the face. It will not look smudged or 'dirty' as quick as the lighter colours.
The pattern for the third repeat seemed very difficult to chose. Pattern 1 and 2 flowed nicely and I couldn't think of anything to match it. In the end, it proved to be terribly obvious: use the pattern that is already worked in the border of the shawl. That way, it comes together perfectly!

Het zou ook mooi zijn als je de shawl draagt en het patroon weer terug komt. Dus uiteindelijk had ik het eenvoudige patroon waar ik zo graag aan wilde werken: A + B + C + B + A
Omdat er ook maar zo weinig steken op de naald stonden, de herhalingen zo fijn zijn om te breien en het ritme er zo lekker in zat, bleek het toch wel een héle lange shawl te worden!
Na het opspannen was hij toch zo maar 214cm geworden! 

It would be nice when you are wearing the scarf, the pattern would be similar on both ends.
So the decision for the working order was made easily: A + B + C + B + A
In the end, I ended up with the simple shawl I so desperately I wanted to make.
The stitches flew of the needles, repeats were easily worked and the feeling of accomplishment was so good, the shawl grew and grew!
After blocking I was surprised to see it turned out to be 21” x 86”! 

Ik heb uiteindelijk niets gewonnen in de ColourMart Contest. Maar ik heb WEL een mooie shawl. Gelukkig had ik een hele goede testbreister en zij koos voor het zelfde garen maar in 1 kleur: Capri. Sue heeft op deze foto heel mooi laten zien dat er wel degelijk verschil is tussen de patronen maar dat het toch mooi over loopt.

 In the end I didn't win anything in the ColourMart Contest. But I DID end up with a gorgeous long scarf. I was so lucky to have an excellent (and quick!) testknitter. Sue used the same yarn, but in a single colour. You can see the patterns are different, yet the pattern continues beautifully.

Ik zou zeggen; brei er zelf een! Het hoeft niet zo lang en die van Sue is op dunnere naalden gebreid maar met een herhaling meer in de breedte.

 Ik weet nog dat ik jaren geleden geïnteresseerd raakte in Shetland Lace. Ik heb toen als eerste de Shetland Tea Shawl gebreid. Ik had al ervaring met kantbreien op de verkeerde kant van het werk, maar toch was het niet zo eenvoudig als dat het eerst leek. 

 I remember fondly the time when I got interested in Shetland Lace. The Shetland Tea Shawl was the first project I knitted. I did have some experience with knitting patterns on the wrong side of the work, but this was a little bit different.

 Na een paar jaar en heel veel oefenen, begon ik met het geven van Workshops. Voor beginners en gevorderden. Voor de beginners had ik vaak dit patroon (NL, gratis!) om mee te werken en voor gevorderden gebruikte ik het diamant patroon van deze shawl (NL, niet gratis). En met die voorbeelden ging het eigenlijk best goed.

 After many years of hard work, I was able to give workshops. For beginners and experienced knitters. For beginners I often used this as the basic start, (ENG, free) and for the more experienced knitters I used this shawl pattern (ENG, not free). And with these shawls all went pretty well.

Totdat het tijd werd voor wat nieuws. Ik bedacht een proeflapje met een paar mogelijkheden. Die heb ik toen in de goede volgorde gezet, van makkelijk naar moeilijk. Breisters kregen vier patroontjes om mee te oefenen, leren hoe je aan 'de verkeerde kant' van het werk een patroontje in breit.

Until it was time for something new. I made a swatch with some options to choose from. I ordered them from easy to difficult. Knitters were offered 4 patterns to work with, to learn to knit patterns on the "wrong" side of the work.

 Jammer was alleen dat dáár geen eindresultaat was. Natuurlijk konden ze wel andere ontwerpen van Kantwerk maken waarin ook Shetland patronen in voor komen. Mooier zou zijn als er gewoon een hele shawl van kwam met nog meer oefeningen.. En zie hier.

It was a bit sad that there was no end result for this swatch. Ofcourse they could work on other design from A Passion For Lace, which have Shetland patterns in them. But how nice would it be if this was one design, with even more samples of Shetland lace. Here it is...

I've used 2 colours for this design, to keep it more clear, what are the shawl stitches and what are the edging stitches. The edging is knitted onto the shawl.

The 12th of Never....

 Sommige projecten vrágen er om om nog een keer gemaakt te worden. Dat had ik vorig jaar al bij dit ontwerp en helemaal toen hij 'weg' was. Ik had een prachtige witte zijde gevonden en ik wilde The 12th of Never 2x zo groot maken.

Some projects are asking for it: knit me again! So I did. I found some pretty white silk and made it twice as large as the original design.

 Het midden patroon was erg saai, of zen. Net wat je wilt. Er leek geen einde aan te komen. Zoals je op de bovenste foto kunt zien, is de rand met hartjes iets anders dan in de kleine shawl.

 The center pattern was quite boring, or Zen. As you like it. It seemed to take forever. As depicted in the photograph above you may notice the hearts are a bit different than in the smaller size.

 Zoals ik zei; eindeloos. Maar kijk wat mooi! Doorzichtig en zo luchtig.. Stel je voor dat je gaat trouwen en zó'n mooie shawl om hebt... Dan kan je dag niet meer stuk!

As I said; endless. But look how stunning it is! Airy and magical. Imagne you could be wearing this on your weddingday! You will be soooooo pretty..

Een prachtige combinatie / A wonderfull combination

Er is weer een shawl af. Het heeft wel héél lang geduurd voor hij af was! Vorig jaar ben ik al begonnen met het patroon te tekenen. Dat viel nog niet mee... Ik had alleen een foto.

There is another shawl done! This one took a very long time to get done. Last year I started with the charting of this shawl. That was pretty hard, as I only had a picture to go from..

 Ik heb al heel veel shawls online kunnen bekijken. Op de site van het Shetland Museum. De meeste originele shawls zijn 'directional'. Dat betekend dat het midden vaak maar in een richting gebreid wordt. Daarna wordt een nieuwe border gebreid en er aan gezet. Vervolgens komt dan de aangebreide rand.

I've seen a lot of shawls online, in the database of the site of the Shetland Museum. Most original shawls are knitted directional. The center has one pattern/set that is knitted in one direction only. Then a second border is knit and often grafted to the center. Then the edging is added.

 Ik had bèst veel werk om het border patroon uit te zoeken. Nabreien en uitproberen, opnieuw tekenen omdat het niet uit komt en opnieuw breien. Nog maar een keer naar de foto kijken. Nog een keer tellen. Nog een keer breien. Zo leek het middenstuk nog makkelijk! Maar dat was het ook niet. Geloof me, er zitten nog 'fouten' genoeg in...

I díd have a lot of work on the unraveling of the border pattern. Knitting it, watching if it looked like the picture at all, recharting, re knitting, adapting and trying again. Watching at the copy of the picture, knitting again, and counting a lot. That made the centerpart look easy! But that wasn't the case. Believe me, there are still plenty of 'fault's  in this one..

 Ik had al contact gehad met Bruce, om te vragen of ik de shawl na mocht breien, op Ravelry advies gevraagd wat een redelijk aantal herhalingen zou zijn voor het midden. Of ik de shawl mirrored of directional zou maken. En wat het dichtst bij het origineel zou komen. Want tenslotte had ik maar een halve foto.

In the meantime I had contacted Bruce, to ask if I was permitted to copy knit this shawl. I had asked on Ravelry what would be a reasonable amount of repeats in the center. Whether or not to mirror or directional knit the shawl. Just to come as close as possible to the original. After all, I only had half a picture of the shawl..

 Uiteindelijk is dit het meest dichtbij wat ik bij het origineel kan komen. De aanhechting van de rand ziet er iets anders uit. Ik vermoed dat ze de onderrand eerst heeft gebreid en de rand aan de lange kanten tegelijk met de shawl zelf. Het is mij niet gelukt om de rand met gaatjes/omslagen zo te krijgen.Vooral omdat ik al begonnen was met het breien van het midden. Maar hij lijkt best goed!

In the end this is the closest I could get to the original. The edging is a bit different. I suspect she knitted the edging first and then knitted shawl and both edgings on the long sides at the same time. I couldn't manage to get the rows of yarnovers/holes to match in the end. Mainly because I had already started with the center. But I came very close...

 Nu stuur ik de foto's naar Bruce met de vraag of ik toestemming kan krijgen van zijn tante, die het origineel heeft gebreid, om deze shawl te publiceren en het patroon te mogen verkopen.

Now I will send the pictures to Bruce, hoping to gain permission from his aunt, who knitted the original, to publish this shawl and sell the pattern.

Het garen is bíjna het zelfde als dat van de Shetland Sweetheart. Hier zit geen kameel in, maar angora. (met cashmere en merino). Daardoor is hij best kwetsbaar...
Ik heb gelukkig nog méér garen met kameel in precies dezelfde kleur...

The yarn is almost the same as of the Shetland Sweetheart. In this there is no camel, but angora. (with cashmere and merino). That makes it extra delicate...
Luckily have móre yarn (with camel in it) in the exact same colour...

Toen had ik me iets bedacht...
Ik heb heel veel uren naar shawls op internet gekeken. Ik wil ze eigenlijk nog liever in het echt zien!
Dus heb ik besloten van al het geld dat ik verdien met patronen, workshops en opdrachten mezelf naar de Shetland Eilanden toe wil breien!!! Ik hoop volgend jaar te gaan, wanneer ze (hopelijk) weer een Shetland Wool Week organiseren in oktober.

Then I thought of something...
I've spent many an hour on the net watching the shawls. I truly want to see them for real!
So, I decided to save my earnings of commissioned knits, pattern sales and workshops and work my way to the actual Shetland Isles! I hope to go next year, when they organize another Shetland Wool Week in October (not sure yet..)
