Outlander shawl... 1 year later.

This is all about the Outlander Lace shawl. Previous posts were written (READ) and (READ) 

 
1 year ago, I casted on for the Shetland Stars Shawl. I would make the Square version, and at about the same time 2 testknitters made the rectangle version. 

 I took my knitting everywhere. I wanted people to know you cán take your lace outside and just add a few (or a lot of) rows. I had casted on on July 8th and I was planning to finish by the end of the year. Little did I know...

The plan was to knit the edge, then pick up loops and knit the border. Decreases every second row and the signature Star right at the start. Then immediately after, the centre. But I still had to do calculations to work out the number of repeats to make it long enough for the border to fit.

A special moment, working on the border with the Outlander episode on the TV. 

I'm not at home, I'm at a B&B in Limburg. Quite memorable. 

Commissioned knits came along, Roe,  Sterling, Solana and I presented my first Knit-a-Long: Reach. An exhibition started about knitting in a local city nearby and in December I got a very important (in my eyes) commissioned knit. I was to knit an impression of an apron that was on display. It was very fine, mine need not be that delicate.
There was a catch, it needed to be done by April 4th and it was already January when I got the approval.
So, by the end of December, only 1664m were knitted. 

January 8th. Working a few rows before I go to work. Always room for 1 more... 

And nothing would get done any sooner than April 1st. I felt guilty. I didn't work on the Rectangle version, and now my deadline passed with only 2/5 worked.  The edge + border and most of the centre. 
Quickly casting on for the second edge + border. 

Always a great thing. Watching your work spread out a bit. I knew how it needed to look, I wanted to see if it actually was correct. I was happy and sad at the same time. Happy with how far I got, sad that I was not even close to finishing. I wasn't even half way! 

Claire is wearing the fine lace shawl in episodes 9 and 12. This is 12.

People started asking, when will it be done?? I was knitting as fast as I could, but now things started happening at home. I couldn't concentrate. The second deadline was February/March but I wasn't close. I "wasn't" a lot.
Doing calculations (edge + border was ~720m and the edge + border + centre was 1664m at first), I came to the conclusion it would take up to 4km!!!! WHAT? It's not that I didn't have the yarn... I didn't want to keep people waiting.
May: 

June 13. One set of Edge + Border to go.

July 8. Putting stitches on hold. Knitting is done! 1 year of knitting (a lót!)
Now, I'm scared (again). Grafting will be okay, but will my calculations be correct???
It isn't until July 17 that I have enought courage and time to graft everything. 

There it is! Unblocked: 120cm x 110cm. You can see which borders are grafted to the sides of the centre panel. A stitch has a V shape. A shape that is longer than that it's wide.
So, when you want to put a V onto a <, you'll run short very quick. That's why you need more.

Designer: (Probably a Sutherland Sister)  Shetland knitter/spinner and Kantwerk / A Passion For Lace.
Pattern contains: 15 pages.
4 pages with information, tips and instructions
8 pages with charts
3 pages with pictures.
Yarn: 4000m or 4374 y 1/16NM Jamieson & Smith Gossamer 1ply in natural white. (I advise to buy yarn on a cone, so you can knit the borders/centre in 1 piece. It's not in their shop, but you can ask for a cone when you order)Needle: 2mm / US0 circulars 40cm / 16” and 80/100cm or 32”/ 40” or use straight needles 40cm / 16”.
Size: 180 x 180cm or 6ft x 6ft blocked, it might bounce back after blocking a bit.
Also: 8 stitch markers, T-pins, blocking kit or frame, waste yarn for Life Lines, towel, suitable detergent, tapestry needle.
All rows are knit. Please read the instructions before you start knitting.

The design has had a heart warming respons. The picture got 39 shares on Facebook, over 450 likes on Instagram and I even was a contender in the Hot Right now... on Ravelry (Spot 8 of the Top 20!)

I hope you will find the same pleasure in knitting this historic piece, as I have. It might take you longer, or you could be quicker. It is TOTALLY worth it. 

Summer vacation

Nou, zo'n 'geweldige' zomervakantie was het nou ook niet. Omdat het best frisjes was, kon ik eigenlijk gewoon doorbreien. Dat heb ik dus ook gedaan en zijn er deze zomer wel 3 sjaals en 2 paar sokken afgekomen.

Well, it wasn't a great summer vacation. Because the temperatures weren't that high, I could keep on knitting and that's what I did. And why I finished 3 shawls and 2 pairs of socks this summer.
The Trachtentuch A, (above) Mist Fountains (no pictures yet) and Remains of a Dragon. Remains of a Dragon. A little shawl with the pattern (edging) from Heere be Dragone. I had to use it again, it's só pretty.
The buttons are made by Sophiphi (Ravelry) with antique silk fabric. They come out great! It gives this little shawl several possibilitys in how to wear it.

Remains of a Dragon. Een kleine korte sjaal met een patroononderdeel van Heere be Dragone (de rand). Ik vond hem zó mooi, die wilde ik nóg een keer breien. De knopen zijn gemaakt met antiek zijden stof door Sophiphi (Ravelry). Ze komen prachtig tot hun recht en op deze manier is de sjaal op diverse manieren te dragen.
De Mist Fountains is ook af, maar die moet nog gewassen en geblockt worden.

Moet je kijken, ondanks alle regen wil alles wel groeien!
Hier onze appels: Elster en Golden Delicious. Ze zijn beide geënt op 1 stam. Dat helpt bij de bestuiving en neemt minder ruimte in beslag. We verwachten een flinke oogst.
These are our apples. Elstar and Golden Delicious. The are grafted to one rootsystem. Pollonation and spacewise not a bad idea.... We expect a large harvest.
Mijn vader is begin juli 65 geworden en voor hem heb ik een paar sokken gebreid. De foto is een beetje donker, maar het is een toe-up sok, en de boord begint na de hiel met 1avr, 3 r. stk. Vandaar dat ik er 9 dagen over deed. Het blijft opletten.
My father turned 65 only 2 weeks ago, so I knitted him some socks. Toe-up with a k3,p1 cuff from the heel. It took 9 days, only to pay attention that it remained k3,p1...
Mijn man en ik hebben altijd katten gehad. Toen onze huiskatten dood waren gegaan, zijn we 8 jaar geleden overgestapt op raskatten. Mijn man koos de noorse boskat en ik de bengaalse tijgerkat. Jammer genoeg ging de boskat dood (na een nestje van 5!!! waarmee het ook niet helemaal goed af liep). Zo'n 2 weken geleden is plotseling onze tijgerkat verdwenen. Erg vreemd, zo vlak voor de vakantie. Alle pensions, dierenasiels opgebeld maar geen spoor.
Vooral mijn man kan slecht zonder kat.
Zaterdag ging hij maar eens uit vissen met de jongens en wat vingen ze? Een kat! Een jong grijs katje, eenzaam aan de waterkant. Ik heb geprobeerd de eigenaar te achterhalen, maar tot nu toe nog niets. Dus voorlopig zijn wij de eigenaar van dit schattige diertje. Ik heb hem Micky genoemd. Hij is ondeugend, speels en ronkt heerlijk.... hahahaha.
Our pedigree cat got 'lost' only 2 weeks ago. It's a Bengal Tigercat, of 9 years. We miss him bad. A bit strange, just before the summer vacation. Our other pedigreecat got run over 3 years ago, that was a Norwegian Forest Cat.
So the otherday, my husband and 2 sons went fishing. And cought a kitten! A grey pussy with white socks. I called it Micky. She's very naughty, cute and so purry... hahahaha.

I predict a lot of wooly accidents from now on....

More Lace

Ja, nog meer kant. Ik mag van gloednieuwe Malabrigo (voor mij nieuw in ieder geval) een kantsjaal breien voor haar. Ik heb van haar de wol gekregen in de prachtige warme kleur Hollyhock (Stokroos). Ik heb eerst een proeflapje gemaakt. Dat doe ik eigenlijk noooooit, maar is wel slim. Zo voorkom je fouten die dan midden in je sjaal gaan zitten. Ook kun je meteen kijken of de naaldenmaat goed is. Zonde van tijd en enthousiasme als je met pen5 breit en 80 steken/5 rijen verder bent om te ontdekken dat 3,5 veel beter is. Hier ga ik mijzelf de komende tijd mee bezighouden.
Patroon: Myrtle Leaf pattern (Victorian Lace today) meets.... something else.
Het is de bedoeling dat er een andere rand, dan die in het boek staat, om heen komt. Inmiddels heb ik voor mijn vader een paar sokken gebreid op pen2. Ze zitten verschrikkelijk lekker. Gebreid met Sockina van Schoeller en Stahl (75 % scheerwol en 25 % polyamide) en een beetje grijs. Ik heb voor de tweede keer een hielkapje gebreid, en dat zit best lekker. Als het goed is is dit maat 45/46. Het afkanten op de tenen is geen succes. Ondanks 3x proberen. Ik heb er een dikke week over gedaan om ze af te krijgen.
I just got 2 skeins of Malabrigo Lace Yarn from her. I will knit a scarf for her in the Myrtle Leaf pattern from Victorian Lace today. Then it gets a new edging. First I made a swatch to avoid problems of needlesize and pattern.
Also made new socks for my dad. On needlesize 0 they took quite a while to finish (a good week). I used one ball of Schoeller Stahl and a bit of grey. Size 12/13 (USA/men). The fit perfectly due to the small needlesize. I hope he keeps his feet warm with these.


Edit: This is the first swatch with the Malabrigo. I've used nr 3,5 (EU) but it's to small for this pattern. So... I will frog this, and start over with a nr 5 (EU) to get a more lacy look.

Sneaky

This is me learning my daughter how to knit. She's four years old, and her brother wanted to learn how to knit, so she wanted too.... The yellow knitting is made by Sean. (notice the dark green Scar socks from the Sockwars 2)
Hier ben ik Bridget aan het leren breien. Haar broer wilde leren breien en toen wilde zij natuurlijk óók... Het gele werkje is van Sean. (aan mijn voeten de donkergroene Scar sokken van de Sockwars 2).Silently desiring (?) plenty of things I see on Ravelry, I started on a couple of new projects.
The cold made me start on some nice small mittens/gloves for my daughter Bridget.
Stiekum wil ik bijna alles wel breien wat op Ravelry staat, dus ik ben alvast maar begonnen met kleine handschoentjes voor Bridget.
This little frontside is flawed. The pattern doesn't hold up... It's knitted on needle 2 (EU) and the ruler is in cm. Pink yarn is sockwool (sort of) and the white is just plain cotton. I'm also knitting some big socks for my dad as a thank-you-gift.
Dit kleine voorkantje zit vol met fouten. Het patroon loopt niet door. Dit is op pen 2 gebreid en de liniaal is in cm. De roze draad is een soort sokkenwol en de witte is gewone katoen. Ondertussen brei ik ook nog een paar sokken voor mijn vader als een dank-je-wel-kadootje.

If you have no life.....

Wat gebeurt er als je niets te doen hebt.... (afgezien van kinderen halen en brengen, verzorgen, huishouden)?
Je plukt wat witte frambozen uit de moestuin, je naait een jurk voor je dochter, je breit verder aan de kantsjaal in Entrelac patroon met alle kantjes die je maar kan vinden, of je gaat alvast een paar lange sokken breien op je nieuwe bamboo naaldjes om te kijken of je snelgenoeg bent voor de sockwars. Ze zijn voor mijn zoon, die zit altijd te bibberen.

What happens if you have no life.... (besides from feeding and hauling children, caring, domestic things dó go on...)? You go to the vegetable garden and pick some white raspberries, you sow a little dress for your daughter, keep on knitting on the Entrelac shawl with all the lace patterns you can find, or try swatching for the up and comming Sockwars to see how fast you can knit a pair on your brandnew bamboo knittingsticks. These are for my son, some kneesocks, because he's always shivering....

Twinkletoes meets Baudelair.

Lekkere tomaatjes uit eigen tuin: Black Plum, Cherry en Königin. Yummie tomatoes from the backyard: Black Plum, Cherry and Königin.

Ik ben begonnen aan kinderkousen. Met mijn grote voeten neemt het zo veel om kniekousen te breien, dan is een meisje van 4 jaar veel geschikter om aan te kleden. (vandaar ook deze blognaam!!!!).
I've started with childrenkneesocks. With my size no one can say how long it will take to finish, so a 4 year old girl to dress up comes in very handy. (Hence the name of the blog!!).

Ik ben begonnen met de tenen van Twinkletoes, (totaal 2x 21 stk) dus eerst opzetten, de hoek om breien en dan verder op vier pennen (in roze). Na 2 rondjes overgegaan op wit en alleen op de bovenkant met Baudelair begonnen. Doorgebreid tot de hiel en weer met roze een Twinkletoe hiel gemaakt.
I've started with the toes of Twinkletoes , (2 times 21 st.) round the corner and then with 4 needles and then knit 2 needles, all in pink. Switch to white, and start with the Baudelair. Knitting till the heel, (in pink) and use the pattern of Twinkletoes again.

Weer verder met wit en na een paar pennen op de achterkant van de kous ook Baudelair gedaan (het mooiste is als het gelijk op gaat met de voorkant). Nu nog een paar centimeter en dan kan ik aan de boord beginnen. Die blijft ook wit, in boordsteek. Bridget is nu al blij......
Knitting on with white and after a few needles also use the Baudelair patttern on the back of the sock. (It will be handy if you start with Baudelair on the back, it is in sink with the front). Only a couple of more inches and then I can begin with the cuff (also in white).
Bridget's already happy!

Eindelijk

CD gevonden, hardware geïnstalleerd, en ik kan weer foto's verspreiden.
Nog niet alle foto's overgezet naar de pc, maar alvast een voorproefje.

Blok

Het kussen is klaar. Het is net niet geworden wat ik had gehoopt, 1 blokje is dus toch net wat groter dan de anderen. Ze zitten netjes aan elkaar, dat wel; 3 witten en 1 zwarte. Ik heb er nog geen achterkant op gemaakt, want ik denk dat ik er toch nog 5 witten bij brei, zodat het zwarte vakje in het midden komt. Da's toch mooier. En heel erg groot wordt het dan toch niet.

Ondertussen heb ik te horen gekregen dat een van mijn vriendinnen-van-het-net zwanger is. Voor mij was Bridget de laatste. Dusssss.... toen ik het pdf bestandje van Saartje zag om babyslofjes te breien, had ik in eerste instantie zoiets: mijn kindjes zijn op, geen aankomende neven en nichtjes in beeld. Vriendin vertelde dat ze 12 weken heen was, én uitgerekend op dezelfde dag als Bridget is geboren, was ik erg blij.... hahahaha.
Eerst maar eens proefje gemaakt, dat beviel toch niet helemaal. Ik heb het patroon aangepast, zodat de neus wat spitser is geworden, er iets meer model in komt.
In een avond had ik precies 2 gebreid, die gaan vanavond dus op de post! Ben benieuwd wat ze er van gaat vinden....

The pillowcase for June is finished. 3 white blocks and one black. Unfortunatly one white block is a little bit bigger (knitted) than the other 3. Besides, I'm probably knitting 5 more blocks to make the pillow-case bigger. The black block will be in the middle, that's more fitting. (no picture, helas).

I've also knitted a pair of tiny baby socks. You can see them on Saartje's site. A friend of mine is pregnant, and due the same day as my daughter is born: 31-12... So I knitted the lovely babysocks. First I made a test run, but I didn't like the shape. So I adapted it, with a more pointy toe for better fit. In one evening they were done. (again, no picture, sorry).
I'll sent them this evening to her, wondering what she'll think of them...

Ik krijg er soms geen hoogte van...

De ene keer maak je sokken, en dan wil de beoogde doelgroep ze niet aan. En nou maak je weer wat anders en mogen ze niet meer uit! Nou ja, dat maakt het wel weer leuk. Ze waren zo lekker om te breien, dat ik heb ze nóg maar een keer gemaakt. Bovendien met deze katoen zien ze er mooier uit. Onwijs glad zijn ze wel, dus misschien toch maar een leertje er onder. Ze moesten natuurlijk mee naar school om te laten zien... Ik heb wel wat aanpassingen gemaakt: een lusje achter voor de veters en een paar minderingen op de tenen.

These are the new and improved Twinkletoes. At first the targetgroup didn't wanted to put something on, and now they may not come off. So she took them to school and showed them to her teacher.. They're slippery so I may have to add a peace of leather to prevent falling. I adapted the pattern a bit: a few decreases at the toes for a better fit, and a loop for the laces.

Ze zijn af ! Deze sokken met de BFL Lathyrus in het patroon van de Sampler CM. Ze zitten heerlijk, al had de boord wat strakker gekund. Ik heb nog een kleinbeetje wol over, dus ik brei nu een klein Jaywalkertje, als een soort sleutelhanger.
Het patroon loopt op de hiel zo vermogelijk door, net als bij de tenen en de zool is gewoon in tricot.
Finished! The socks with the Blue Faced LeicesterLathyrus in the Sampler CM pattern are done! They feel great, although the cuffs could be a bit more tighter. I've still got some yarn left, so I'm knitting a tiny little Jaywalker, as keychain/lucky charm...
The pattern goes all the way down to the heel and toes, the sole is in tricot.
