Canada is making a major investment in regional economic resilience and defence innovation. Quantum Valley Ideas Laboratories was pleased to be recognized as part of last week’s announcement by The Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence, MP The Honourable Bardish Chagger, and Parliamentary Secretary Tim Louis. The announcement outlined nearly $40.5M in new investments through the Regional Tariff Response Initiative and the Regional Defence Investment Initiative. QVIL's contribution will support a $20M project to develop and commercialize quantum-enhanced radar technology, establish Canada's first atomic vapour cell manufacturing hub, and next-generation quantum sensors, with the aim of strengthening the country's defence innovation capabilities. Canada is making a major investment in defence innovation. I was pleased to represent Quantum Valley Ideas Laboratories (QVIL) at today’s announcement by Minister Mélanie Joly , Minister David J. McGuinty, and Secretary of State Stephen Fuhr PC MP CD outlining more than $900M in new investments to strengthen Canada’s defence innovation ecosystem. Canada’s ability to translate advanced research into real-world capability depends on strong collaboration between government, research institutions, and industry. Today’s announcement reinforces the importance of building those connections across the national innovation ecosystem. Congratulations to Mitch Davies, President of the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada, and Julie Lefebvre, Vice-President of Emerging Technologies, and their teams for their leadership in advancing this initiative. QVIL was honoured to welcome Minister Stephen Fuhr to Waterloo Region on Friday as part of his visit to meet with companies helping build Canada’s growing defence and security ecosystem. As Canada works toward significantly expanding defence investment, with a strong emphasis on spending in Canada and supporting Canadian companies, the opportunity for sovereign technologies has never been greater. At QVIL, we discussed how federal support for quantum innovation is translating into real-world capabilities that strengthen national security, economic resilience, and dual-use applications across critical infrastructure. We also recognize the importance of the new agency under Minister Fuhr’s leadership in aligning procurement, capital, and industrial strategy to help Canadian innovators scale. Waterloo Region is already a powerhouse for advanced technology. QVIL’s CEO Nick Werstiuk had the pleasure of attending the UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase, organized by Innovate UK in collaboration with EPSRC and the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme (UKNQTP). This year’s event, running from November 3-7, brought together industry leaders, researchers, investors, and policymakers from across the globe for a look at how quantum technologies are moving toward commercialization. As a flagship event of the International Year of Quantum 2025, the showcase featured live demonstrations, industry sessions, and panels from national and global partners. With 110+ exhibitors and over 3000 of attendees, it was an amazing opportunity to explore the translation of research to industrial impact. Quantum Valley Ideas Lab was honoured to present to Lt Gen Iain S Huddleston of NORAD this past November 6th. Lt Gen Huddleston was part of a delegation to the Waterloo Region focusing on gaining insights on Canadian AI innovations. We were able to engage directly with founders and technology leaders from the region, including Joel Semeniuk with Primal, Curtis Larocca with KA Imaging Inc., J.Paul Haynes, P.Eng. with eSentire, and Andrew Wilgar with GovAI. Marc Gibson, PhD MBA LLM spoke on behalf of QVIL at the Fall 2025 meeting for the Conference Board of Canada, Innovation for the Next 5 Years: Exploring the Intersection of AI, Quantum, and Scaling Support. Hosted by Communitech, this meeting brought together innovators, entrepreneurs, and policy experts to network and discuss the future of technological innovation in Canada. QVIL presented on day two alongside Institute for Quantum Computing to discuss the intersection of quantum technologies and AI, especially as related to industry, security, and society. Marc spoke on QVIL’s work translating quantum research to real-world applications. The conference also offered opportunities for participants to visit Waterloo’s cutting-edge labs and startups. Grateful to all the other panelists and speakers for sharing your thoughts and energy, as well as the The Conference Board of Canada Canada for facilitating this event!

Our COO Marc Gibson, PhD MBA LLM was pleased to join the CTI (Critical Technologies & Innovation) panel at this year’s MEDJCT Innovation Policy Forum (IPF), held in Toronto on October 28, 2025. Returning for its second year, IPF brought together innovation and technology leaders to network, exchange ideas, and gain insights on key topics such as AI, regional innovation, and CTI. Our panel focused on CTI program outcomes, success stories, best practices, opportunities, challenges, and emerging needs in a shifting technological, economic, and global landscape. A big thank you to our fellow participating panelists and organizations Jason Lee, Maura Campbell, and Charles Finlay for the thoughtful conversations.
