These outdated methods prioritize mid-to-high frequencies, missing how low-frequency sounds retain energy over long distances and penetrate buildings. Industry & Regulators: Shift to Low-Frequency-Targeted Methods: Adopt 1/3-Octave Band Analysis (60-200 Hz): Move beyond broad octave bands to precise single frequency or 1/3-octave resolution for low frequencies. Leverage C-Weighting & Delta Triggers: Screen with LC-LA >15 dB differences, then use G-weighting or low-frequency criterion curves to address propagation effects. Distance-Based Penalties: Regulators should enforce low-frequency adjustments (+8-12 dBA) for impacts beyond 1 mile, using extended spectrum modelling tools. Industry Tech Solutions: Implement digital active noise control (ANC), vibration isolation, and silencers designed for low-frequency mitigation from the outset.
