15 Ontico–Ontological Critiques for PMBOK® Guide – 8th Edition Critique #10: Shooting at the FAR The map is not the territory.” — Alfred Korzybski For many U.S. Federal project professionals, PMBOK® has long served as a complementary guide alongside the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). With more than hundreds of thousands of PMP® holders working directly or indirectly on federal programs, one would expect the newest PMBOK® Edition to strengthen—not weaken—the integration between project management and acquisition practice. Yet the opposite has happened. In the 8th Edition, procurement and acquisition logic has nearly disappeared as an explicit management domain. What used to be a structured area—complete with planning, solicitation, evaluation, contract administration, and closeout—has now dissolved into scattered references embedded inside broader “performance domains.” This creates a very practical problem: 👉 FAR is a contract- and process-driven system, designed to regulate how government agencies plan, compete, award, and manage contracts worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually. 👉 PMBOK 8, however, no longer provides a clear project-management scaffold for acquisition work. The result? Federal agencies are increasingly forced to produce their own project management guidance—mini handbooks, training modules, and internal standards—because PMBOK no longer supplies a usable frame for acquisition-heavy programs. And when the mainstream global PM standard moves away from procurement logic, FAR practitioners are left managing a world in which: contracting is central, acquisition risk determines mission success, lifecycle timelines follow strict statutory gates, and program managers must align tightly with oversight bodies and compliance requirements. In this context, FAR is not “supported” by PMBOK 8 — it stands alone. The DAU acquisition pathways (shown in the attached visual) reveal the depth and structure of real-world government program execution. The PMP exam will be updated in July 2026. PMI published on Friday, November 14, the new Exam Content Outline for PMP, with important changes that will take effect in July 2026. Important for candidates: If you are currently preparing or want to take the preparation course: - The current version of the exam remains valid until July 2026. - You have enough time to take the exam on the current version. However, if you plan to take the PMP exam after July 2026, here is a brief summary of the main announced changes: 1. More questions → from 180 to 185 total questions 2. More time → from 230 to 240 minutes 3. New question types: → Case study with multiple questions on the same scenario → Graphic-based questions and visual interpretation → New question types exclusively for CBT (Enhanced Matching, Pull-down list) 4. Redistribution by domain: → Business Environment increases from 8% to 26% → People decreases from 42% to 33% → Processes decreases from 50% to 41% 5. More adaptive/hybrid, increases from 50% to 60%
