IFPRI made public the results of Next Harvest in 2003, a study that compiled and analyzed the first extensive database of publically-developed genetically modified crops under development in non-industrialized countries. Consequently, several regional and national efforts have been made to update this database and expand Next Harvest findings.

Consequently, several regional and national efforts have been made to update this database and expand Next Harvest findings.
The Status of Biotechnology in Kenya - Next Harvest II aimed to establish the biotechnology capacity in Kenya and provide recommendations moving forward. It focused on the agricultural biotechnology components including: main Agri-biotech research activities engaged, techniques and methods employed, characteristics of current policies, constraints and opportunities and public and private institutions involved. Data was collected from researchers in not for profit organizations, international research institutions, regional organizations, universities and national research and policy institutions in Kenya. The study found that the current legislation mainly devoted to crop biotechnology
Some opportunities identified include Agri-biotech research where there is a clear demand for new products to mitigate climate change, impacts such as drought, and emerging challenges including diseases such as Maize Lethal Necrotic Disease and new biotech products required to meet food and nutritional requirements of an increasing population.
