Stan Karbowiak shared thisIn 1960, Howard Dully was a normal boy. Teachers said he behaved like any other child. Most doctors agreed he did not need treatment. But his stepmother claimed he was dangerous and needed to be controlled. One powerful surgeon listened to her. Walter Freeman, known for his ice pick lobotomies, chose to operate on a healthy child. With his father’s signed consent, Howard was placed under electroshock until he passed out. Metal tools were pushed behind his eyes, cutting parts of his brain. He woke up feeling empty. He struggled to think, to feel, and to understand what had happened. He lost pieces of himself that he could never get back. No one was punished. The stepmother faced nothing. Freeman continued performing lobotomies. Howard was expected to move on, even though his childhood had been stolen. For decades, he lived in confusion, wondering why his life had been taken apart. As an adult, he searched medical records and found the truth. There was no evidence he needed the surgery. In 2007, he wrote My Lobotomy. His story gave thousands of forgotten victims a voice. Howard Dully survived. He became a husband, a father, and a man with his life back.

When it became clear that a 10-year-old girl who is paralyzed would struggle to complete parts of the trip with her classmates, the teacher quietly stepped in and carried her on his back so she could experience the day alongside everyone else. Instead of watching from the sidelines or missing out on activities, the young girl was able to stay involved, laugh with her friends, and create memories just like the other students. Photos from the trip quickly spread online as people praised the teacher’s simple but powerful act of kindness and inclusion. Many parents and educators said the moment showed what genuine care for students really looks like, especially when actions matter more than words. What stood out to so many people was that the teacher never appeared to do it for attention or recognition. He simply saw a child who deserved to feel included and made sure she did. The story became a reminder that compassion is often found in the quiet decisions people make when nobody expects them to step in. Stan Karbowiak shared thisOn February 22, 2016, 10-year-old Kiera Larsen was outside in Lakeside, California, playing near two toddlers when a terrifying accident unfolded within seconds. According to reports, a Mercedes SUV parked in a nearby driveway suddenly slipped into neutral and began rolling downhill directly toward the children. The toddlers, only one and two years old, were too young to understand the danger or move out of the way in time. Witnesses later said Kiera reacted immediately. As the SUV rushed toward them, she ran toward the toddlers and used all her strength to push them out of the vehicle’s path. The children survived the incident, but Kiera was struck before she could escape herself. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward, but the young girl had already lost her life. The story spread across the country because many people were deeply moved by the selfless decision she made in a matter of seconds. Friends and family described Kiera as kind, protective, and someone who naturally cared for younger children and animals. In recognition of her extraordinary bravery, she was later posthumously awarded the Carnegie Medal, one of the highest honors for civilian heroism in the United States. Stan Karbowiak shared thisIn 2015, a father in Texas, George Pickering II, faced a critical moment after his son suffered a massive stroke and was declared brain dead by doctors. Medical staff were preparing to withdraw life support and move forward with organ donation. The decision had been made based on their clinical assessment. But Pickering did not accept it. In a desperate attempt to gain more time, he brought a gun into the hospital room and prevented doctors from proceeding, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours. During that time, he insisted his son was still alive and asked for one more test. He told his son to squeeze his hand. According to reports, his son responded with a slight movement. After the standoff, Pickering surrendered peacefully and was later sentenced to prison for his actions. His son, however, did not pass away as initially expected. He survived and continued to recover over time. The case drew attention for the difficult questions it raised around medical judgment, end-of-life decisions, and how such situations are handled. LHSC launches new at-home care program for discharged hospital patients. Supported by the province, the program offers up to 16 weeks of personalized home care services. A team of health care professionals delivers a specific program for each patient, explained Shelby Fisch, vice president of the Acute Transition Program for SE Health. “Our primary nurse goes in, assesses the patient. We bring in the whole interprofessional team, which includes physiotherapists, or occupational therapists, our PSWs, social worker, dietitian. We do a fulsome assessment, and we develop personalized programs,” said Fisch.
