The lantern

About a month ago, I shared my handmade miniature ring binders with you and promised you to share a picture of the office in the lantern that I made them for, once it's done.
As I had mentioned, the lantern is a goodbye gift for a dear colleague working in the IT department which is why my friend had the idea for the miniature office.

She also had the idea to get the mini electronic devices - I doubt any of us three working on this collaboration would have come up with something handmade quickly, so they are store-bought - and felt in the color of the carpet at work, and my favorite, to turn a game token she ruthlessly stole from her mother into a desk lamp, an idea which got realized by her husband.
Then she made the small pad of sticky notes for the desk and added an extra big note as a reminder for an appointment.

Her husband who is a talented woodworker (I'm already looking forward to setting up the beautiful candle arch he made for me) took the wooden bars off the glass, so you can see the office well even with the door shut, then he made the amazing desk and wall shelf and added the LEDs.

You already know that I made the waste paper basket and the binders, then I put together a quick poster with an IT joke which my friend printed out and put on the "wall" with tape. Tape is omnipresent at work.
It's a little difficult to see from this view, but the two green items on the desk are fat little pencils that I made from a wooden shish kebab skewer and cut labels that I painted green to remind of a well-known German pencil manufacturer.

In this picture you can see the details a little better.

I can even imagine our co-worker being able to add more to this little office if she feels like it.
It was big fun, and if we had been able to get together to work on this, who knows what else we would have come up with? I think we make a pretty good team!

Last but not least here's a picture of the whole lantern.

Artist collaborations

The month is coming to an end (and the first quarter of the year with it, time does fly!) which means it's time for another blog carnival at the Jewelry Artisans Community.

Collaborations are not unusual in the creative world, from paintings to books to, you guessed it, jewelry.
You may expect to see some HeatherCats now as inspired by the wonderful paintings of my friend Heather from Essencestudios. That is not the kind of collaboration I want to talk about today, though. Heather didn't originally paint her cats for me to turn them into jewelry. She painted them and after I made the patterns I showed them to her for approval and then turned them into jewelry. (And I know there haven't been any for too long, but something is in planning because I still love the paintings as much as ever)

Let me go back in time a few years instead. Back then we still had our old forum, the Starving Jewelry Artists, and we had the Starving Artists Team on Etsy.
This team collaborated on two occasions, the SATeam Holiday Wrist Candy Giveaways in 2009 and 2010. We had decided on bracelets because for a team whose members were situated all over the world it was the easiest way to make one piece of jewelry together.
Everyone would make a charm in their own style and then we would all send them to one member who assembled the bracelet and took the pictures. I have to admit I'm not sure anymore who it was, so I rather leave out the name instead of telling the wrong one,  but she did a great job. The results were beautiful - one topic was "Flowers" and the other "Christmas".

I hope the winners still enjoy their bracelets, they were crafted and assembled with love. Just imagine the variety of techniques that went into them! We had lampworkers, we had wire wrappers, we had beaders, we had silversmiths, and more. I was mostly still wire crocheting at that time.
Of course I have some pictures for you to look at, too, if you are curious now.

You know, I think it would be fun to have a collaboration again. It sure has been a while.

Who are the HeatherCats?

The HeatherCats are a secret project I have been talking about for a while, a project by Heather and Cat.

Heather is a friend of mine, a painter from New Zealand. I met her on deviantART and got to know the Essencestudios. I couldn't even tell you in what group it was, but among her talents Heather has a talent for bright, whimsical paintings, many of which are cats, so how could I not be fascinated the moment I saw the first one?
I really, really wanted one of her paintings for myself, and there was also that little seed of an idea in my head ....

To cut a long story short, I have my painting on the wall

and Heather has a bracelet after one of her other paintings, the Lazy Cat.

That's where it all started.
The HeatherCats are an exclusive line of jewelry bead loomed by yours truly after original paintings of Heather and they are ready to walk out of the shadows now.
Believe me, they are worth watching, both on canvas and in beads.

You will find them on Facebook and you will find them in my Zibbet shop as well where the first of them just made his entrance.
Biskit is a truly happy cat. Who wouldn't like to be able and relax like a cat? In summer, in the garden, on your back, just letting things happening around you.
Biskit was painted after one of Heather's own cats.

Stay tuned because more of them are waiting!
