Peace and quiet only an hour away from LA

If you live in southern California, Los Angeles area, San Diego or Palm Springs, and have never been to Idyllwild, you must go.  It is as simple as that. This is a divine place. I went there before I had Cici, and I will return with her and it will be another amazing experience.  Getting back to the woods. We all suffer from nature deficient disorder living our busy lives in urban surroundings. It is time to kick back, take your shoes off and relish the silence.

This is what I wrote about being there…

I did not realize how much I missed the sounds of silence until I stayed one hour away from Palm Springs and Los Angeles in Idyllwild, California.  Idyllwild provides all of the ingredients for a romantic or creative interlude: privacy, scenic splendor, chocolate, good food and wine, and palpable peace and quiet.  A perfect place for a restful and rejuvenating retreat from city life, majestic trees, mountain scenery, fresh clean air, birds singing, squirrels playing, and stars at night. If you are an artist or writer, this is a fabulous place for a retreat.

Idyllwild is located in the San Jacinto mountains of Southern California, tucked away in the remote, southern portion of the San Bernardino National Forest above Palm Springs.  At 10,804 feet above sea level, Mt. San Jacinto is the second tallest mountain in Southern California.

Idyllwild is known for its breathtaking beauty. But it also hosts numerous cultural events (art galleries, music festivals, theatrical productions) as well as outdoor activities (horseback riding, rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, camping and mountain biking). In the summer, Idyllwild also offers respite from the summer heat. And a midweek stay is always good.

Unique one-of-a-kind gifts can be found in the numerous gift shops, perfect for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and other holiday shopping. You can also combine art viewing with shopping at Everitt’s Minerals & Gallery and Willow Creek Gallery.

Personally, I prefer the wild serenity and relaxation option of the spa experience.  Dining out at natural food cafes such as Natures Wisdom and Idyllwild Green are a nice home away from home treat.  Anna Bielecki is a fabulous hostess and makes amazing all natural chocolate treats.

If you and your sweetie are looking for a cozy, romantic setting for Valentine’s Day, your anniversary,  or just because, try the Restaurant Gastrognome or the Gnome as the locals call it. The ambiance is private and enjoyable, the food elegant and delicious and the service superb. Go for the specials such as lobster tacos. And the chocolate dessert cake rates a 10+ on the choco-delicious meter.

http://www.idyllwildbureauoftourism.com/

And if you want a romantic location for a wedding, why not consider getting married in Idyllwild. Rev. Richard Cadieux will be happy to conduct your ceremony. Plus, you can honeymoon at his Cedar Street Inn & Spa where romance reigns in an atmosphere of old world sophistication. The conference room is perfect for seminars. Vow renewal and small wedding ceremonies, who could ask for anything more?

Last time I spoke with Richard, a couple of months ago he told me that he is creating a wedding ministry, to go out and perform weddings because more and more brides want a wedding that is non-denominational, in an out of doors setting, done by a wedding official.  There will be 2.4 million weddings in 2008 and the average cost is $28K.

And Cedar Street Inn and Spa is a pet-friendly hotel and an award winning inn. Plus, Idyllwild’s finest massage therapists and esthetician practice their healing art at the Cedar Street Inn and Spa.

http://www.cedarstreetinn.com

Two other don’t miss romantic hideaways are Strawberry Creek Inn and the Rainbow Inn. I stayed in the Bear Den room at the Rainbow Inn… comfy, with a lot of modern amenities and nice breakfast. Innkeepers Lon and John were not there at the time but the ambiance was wonderful.

http://www.rainbow-inn.com/The_Bear_Denx.htmll

The difference between a mediocre host and a par excellent one are the attention to the details. Ian and Rodney at the Strawberry Creek Inn offer guests a cozy all natural setting. I stayed in the Evergreen Room with a fireplace, and an eco-friendly coffee log to set on the fire. Plus, they treated me to delicious chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and some other cacao goodies.  I truly felt welcomed.

http://www.strawberrycreekinn.com/

Drink in nature at its finest… Idyllwild is a feast for the body and soul…

Pet friendly Idyllwild…  dog friendly lists several parks, events and lodging….

Along Highway One… from Monterey to Bodega Bay…

I fell in love with Bodega Bay on a visit to Santa Rosa when I still lived in Carson City. I went there every day rain or shine, it didn’t matter. I adore the rocky, craggy shoreline. I cast a few prayers out to the ocean and lo and behold a few years later, in 2004, I had the opportunity to live there, in a house across from the beach. The deer visited the lawn every night. And it was quiet and peaceful. I took care of a cat and enjoyed the salty air.

Given my love for Bodega Bay and Half Moon Bay, Cici and I decided to travel up from Monterey along Hwy 1, along the coast. I thought that the beaches were dog friendly but found out that they are not. Not even at Costa Noa, an upscale eco camp where you can stay in a yurt. So we bypassed most of the towns. There are some interesting farms that we did not go to but one of these days, we will visit.

A great chocolate find is Donnelly’s in Santa Cruz. Yum yum. quite a great assortment of chocolates, including alcohol fillings, an array of fillings that set the mouth to watering.

http://www.donnellychocolates.com/

Past Pescadero and Pigeon Point, just south of the town of Half Moon Bay, there is a really great Italian restaurant that has the BEST chocolate dessert (death by chocolate cake) that I’ve EVER tasted. Joe’s restaurant, 2380 S. Cabrillo Highway (Hwy 1). 650-560-9260.

http://www.halfmoonbayjoes.com/index.htm

Right in Half Moon Bay, just after you pass the turnoff for Hwy 92, that goes into Redwood City, we had to visit our favorite Thai restaurant, Siam Restaurant. The owner and staff are from Thailand, very friendly, the nicest people and the food is wonderful. I love the Pad Thai with chicken and chicken curry. One time, I went on a fishing trip (never again) and brought back a boatload of fish and gave it to them. They cooked some up for me in a curry sauce and it was mouthwateringly wonderful. It’s at 50 Cabrillo Hwy N, #2, Half Moon Bay. Cici made friends outside while I had lunch.

Afterwards, we walked along the beach. I can never remember which beach it is, Francis or Poplar, it has free parking, the others charge a fee.   There is a horse path that goes along the cliff, the beach is very steep and I never actually go onto the beach there. She sniffed and sniffed to her heart’s delight.

http://www.halfmoonbaychamber.org/visiting_hmb/beaches.html#Poplar%20Beach

After visiting another beach and wandering around town, we went to the bank and headed back to Carson City. It was around 4 pm, worse traffic ever and no good path. We got stuck along the 37 into Vallejo. Terrible place to get stuck. Isolated and deserted, but we had company because of all of the traffic. Luckily, a car filled with English tourists stopped for us and drove into town and brought us back three quarts of oil. We borrowed a cell phone and called AAA who could not find us without the turnoff exit name. Not exactly like looking for a needle in the haystack. I bet they are still looking for us.

Another time, we went to Santa Rosa, stayed at the Motel 6 on the north part of town, not the one by the college and visited Bodega Bay.  We walked around Sebastopol, too. On the road from Santa Rosa to Sebastopol to Bodega, I think it’s Hwy 12, there are some orchards and there were a ton of apples on the ground. Sebastopol also has a Whole Foods Market and Screaming Mimi’s, the best homemade ice cream ever. There are a lot of shops for window shopping. And Santa Rosa has a Trader Joe’s. If you take the 116 into Sebastopol, there is a wonderful turkey/hamburger shack, Sequoia Drive-in on the way into town.

Bodega has the best fish and chips on the planet at the Boat House, a local’s favorite… The other places are overpriced and commercialized.

l-1.jpeg

There is a Visitor’s Center, where they can give you a ton of info about the area. This is the town where Alfred Hitchcock filmed the movie “The Birds.”

Next to the post office, there is a great little hot dog shack, called The Dog House which has various interesting varieties of dogs and accoutrements besides mustard and ketchup.  (707) 875- 2441

A great place to stay sans pets, is a wonderful little motel in Bodega where I stayed another time (pre-Cici) by myself on my birthday. No pets allowed. It’s the Harbor Inn. There is a do it yourself laundromat and 7-11 type store right around the corner. Very reasonable rates for the area and clean, quiet non-smoking rooms.

Afterwards, we visited Schoolhouse beach (across the street from where I used to live), and there were too many people and dogs. It’s a pretty small beach. Nice and accessible though. Cc decided she wanted to play with these two boys who were about 8 and 12 years old and a little overwhelmed by her enthusiasm.

We left and decided to explore other places. Went to some of my favorites, including Armstrong Woods. They were booked, or we might have camped there one night underneath the redwoods… There is a $6 fee per car to drive into the woods but I prefer to walk. It’s free but I really love taking a walk through the trees. I like to walk, stop, sit down on a bench, and breathe. It’s such a peaceful atmosphere and cool and dark. I left cici in the car while I refreshed myself in the silence and majesty of the trees. Heaven on earth.

On Hwy l before Jenner and before it turns off to Guerneville, behind the Indian restaurant, the Sizzling Tandoor (food is passable), there is a road that leads to some paths. We drove and there were a lot of other people going there, too. I decided to walk her instead of following the crowd who obviously were going to a wedding.

On the way into the town of Guerneville, there is a school with a fenced area, almost like a park, and it was the weekend, so no kids there.  I was able to let her go off leash for awhile. And simply had to stop in at my favorite Mexican restaurant, Mi Casita, on the way into town. They have the largest burritos and fresh salsa.

Bodega Bay Beaches To Take Your Dog (on a leash)

Doran Beach
Marshall Gulch
Carment Beach
Schoolhouse Beach
Portuguese Beach
Duncans Cove
Wright’s Beach
Furlong Gulch
Shell Beach
Blind Beach

There is also Chanslor Stables where you can rent horses and ride along the beach, too. On the way from Bodega to Schoolhouse beach. The Sonoma coast is breathtaking.

After I moved from Bodega, I lived in Bolinas for the summer, and I used to take Hwy l from Bolinas up to Bodega Bay once a week to pick up my mail. It is a wonderful one hour drive along the water and alongside the trees. You go into Point Reyes Lighthouse National Seashore.  I found it quite meditative. In places it is twisty and windy but not excessively. And there are so many wonderful beaches and places to visit including Dillon’s beach.

http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp

So many beautiful places to explore…

Further south, there is Mt. Tamalpais, Mill Valley, Sausalito… ahhhhhhh….

It’s funny since I lived 12+ years in Los Angeles, I had this attitude about northern California, that I didn’t like it, San Francisco reminds me too much of New York and I left there when I was 19. But the last 5-6 years exploring northern California has been amazing. And even more so when traveling with my dog. Starry starry nights…

Dogs and chocolate …

There are numerous routes to take to get to the Bay area from Carson City, Nevada. In the summer, you have more choices than in the winter when the roads can be snowy, passes closed, winds can be blustery and you may be required to put chains on your tires depending upon the winter conditions.  You can drive north up to Reno and take the 80 across to Sacramento and then take the 99 or 5 down south, depending upon where you are going. Or you can take the 50 west past Placerville, which is scenic and takes you below Sacramento, which makes more sense to me. Or you can take the 88 or the 120 into Jackson, hook up with the 5 in Stockton and go to the 205 to the 580 to the 680 and connect with the 101 or the 1.  I like the latter route the best because it seems like there’s less traffic, it’s scenic and  seems to take less time. Besides, often traffic is usually going in the opposite direction, if you time it right.

I wasn’t going to tell you about the experience we had at one of the chocolate venues we visited but I’ve changed my mind. A guide is not always about positive experiences, it’s about telling people their opinion and letting others decide for themselves. it can serve as a warning.

We drove on the 88 into Jackson, stayed overnight at a small pet friendly motel near a church for about $60. The motel is called the Linda Vista. It was quiet, homey and adequate for our needs. There are probably fancier, higher priced places that take pups but we found this one and it was suitable. From Jackson, we decided to explore the tiny towns of Clements and Lockeford nearby because there was a chocolate factory, fruit farms, bakery and even a ravioli place.

It was really hot weather in July so by the time we drove the 20 minutes from Jackson to get to the town of Clements, it was 10 a.m. There is a nice coffee shop across the street and I had a wonderful omelette breakfast. on another occasion. But that morning, it was already in the 80’s at 10 a.m.  Sweltering. Now this chocolate factory has a gate circling the property and it was not clear how to get inside. There is also a gift shop. I parked the car and thought because of the fencing around the garden, I could walk my dog there and she would be safe. I could tether her up in the shade while I ran inside quickly.

But I found out that there was no way to get from the parking lot area inside the factory. You HAVE to go through the gift shop. I found that off putting. Once inside the gift shop, a lady came to meet me, who showed me where to go. She was too busy to give me a real tour. So the “tour” was self-guided. You look inside the glass and watch the people working. There is a very short video, too. Big deal. And then you are supposed to go back into the gift shop and buy up some chocolate. Tiny free samples. This was NOT Silly Rabbit or Dagoba.

I should mention that when we went to Dagoba, all of their big whigs were back east at a meeting. Yet, someone came out, gave me a bunch of samples and talked to me for a few minutes. She showed me around their gift shop. And Dagoba has YUMMY organic chocolates. It is located in Ashland, Oregon. Who could not love a company with a Tao of Cacao newsletter?

http://www.dagobachocolate.com/

The name of the place in Clements is Chocoholics. You’ve probably bought or seen their body frosting for Valentine’s Day or some romantic occasion. I have gone through the town on several other occasions and passed on visiting again due to the unfriendly feel of the gate and the unwelcome attitude found inside. For a place that manufactures a staple for romance, the place should exude LOVE and romance or at least FRIENDLY vibes.

The website looks a lot better than the factory “tour.” Maybe I am just cranky but I think that tours should be fun, informative, friendly and give out free samples. It seems that their tours are another way to make money.  The website indicates that people can take a tour with dessert, boxed lunch and dessert, etc. for a price and a minimum number of people.  This tour gets one cacoa bean overall as opposed to ten cacao beans for Silly Rabbit and Dagoba. Get over yourselves, Chocoholics… gourmet my left foot.

http://www.gourmetchocolate.com/tours.aspx

In nearby Lodi, you can visit wineries and sample your heart away.  After visiting Clements, you might just be so inclined.

Also, Jelly Belly’s has free tours in Fairfield, and stores in Vacaville, Gilroy and Sacramento. Online, they even have a virtual tour you can take. Now that’s called CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH A SMILE.  They do have some unique chocolate jelly bean offerings such as chocolate coconut, chocolate caramel, chocolate vanilla and chocolate fudge brownie. Fun for the whole family …

Dog friendly beaches… from Oregon to California…

ok, getting back on topic, traveling with my dog this past summer…We loved Ashland, as mentioned in my post about Silly Rabbit way back when. Medford was ok. The drive from Ashland to Brookings was very scenic, although the temperature was hot hot hot.

We found a nice lake in Ashland near Dagoba. The folks there were gracious, gave us a few samples and directed us to a place to cool off. Cici jumped right in the water and splashed her little heart out while I watched. There was not a good place for me to be in the shade and the water was too muddy for my taste but refreshing for my dog who had been in the hot car. Splish splash.

Just north of Medford, in Grants Pass, we stopped at Cary’s, known for its English Toffee. Delish !  We received a warm welcome and free samples. They had just been featured on Rachael Ray’s TV show.  The deep dark chocolate toffee is fantastic so I was a happy camper. Cici had to stay in the car, so she waited patiently and sulked.

http://www.carysoforegon.com/dark-chocolate.html

Brookings, Oregon was just plain strange. It was a relief to get to the cool ocean breezes and Cici was anxious to meet some doggie friends on the beach. But first, we stopped in at the Travel Center at Harris Beach State Park. They have a campground with four yurts and there is a beautiful rest area (the best we have ever sniffed anywhere).  It took some convincing and asking several people for permission to visit the yurts, but we managed to view a yurt that they use for kids. The other yurts were occupied by campers. The campground was brimming full of people, too claustrophobic for my taste. Isn’t the point of camping out to get away from everything, including people?

The beaches from Astoria to Brookings are havens for dog lovers and their four-legged companions, who happily swim in the ocean, dig in the sand, and nap on the beach, according to the hype. The day was cloudy and overcast but we endeavored our way down the stairs to get to the beach. Cici sniffed the entire way, licked some feet of passersby, and we made it onto the sand. The coolness was invigorating and there were a few dogs with their humans. Cici wanted to play with all of them but settled for a large dog (mixed breed). The two pups rassled and chased one another across the wet sand and into pools of water while we humans chatted. Boring.

Afterwards, we got a bite to eat at three places, a health food place, friendly people, ok carrot juice, and an Italian place, had a sad chicken parmesanlike sandwich. The third place is not even worth mentioning, that’s how bad it was. We had high hopes for chocolate but there were no venues worth mentioning. We were going to rest our sleepy heads in Brookings but the place frankly gave us the creeps. I love small towns and thought that the rest area would be safe. It was still daylight. The motels were not dog friendly and expensive. So it was not to be for us to stay overnight. There were a lot of restless adolescents (gangs) who seemed to be looking for trouble. So spur of the moment, we decided to head south.

Driving back down the coast is extremely twisty, windy on the 101 and on top of that we had weather to contend with. Thunderstorms with litning to boot. It quickly became dark and country dark, which is the darkest dark there is. Tiny towns with no accommodations, either. No place at the inn for me and my pup.  Sure, most people plan ahead  but me and my dog were flying by the seat of our paws. When you do that, you get a mixed bag. Wonderful discoveries and odd happenings.

If I had done some research, could woulda shoulda found out about other places. We were going to go up to Gold beach but changed our minds. Oh well, another time…

Finally, after much prayer and supplication for somewhere to rest for the weary, we found a youth hostel in the middle of nowhere. It was full to capacity and then some but we were able to camp out near their parking lot. They locked the gates so that no one could get inside and we felt safe at last. Cici slept in the car while I grabbed my sleeping bag and got some shuteye on the ground.

The next morning, early, they opened the gate for us ahead of time, and we were off. We flew down past Arcata and Eureka, checked out the wildlife along the way,and the city of Ferndale, revisited the Avenue of the Giants and hunkered down for the night in a Redwood Forest. If you have never been to the Giant Redwoods, go immediately. The hushed forests are enchanting and magical.

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/CAPHItree.html

The next day we headed down to Garberville, revisited new friends at a friendly gas station there, had a fabulous brunch, got on the Internet at the library. G-ville is a hippie enclave town, much like Sebastopol near Santa Rosa and Bodega Bay.  We checked out the parks, they were pretty small.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garberville,_California

According to wiki, The first settlers arrived in 1853 to what was then named “Dogtown.”

We checked out the One Log House… This tiny house was made out of one log and has an eating, sleeping and living area, sort of like a train compartment, only bigger. There is also a cafe where you can get on the Internet for free there. Cici sniffed and ran around on the grass.

http://one-loghouse.com/

After awhile, we made it to Ukiah, back to the Motel 6. But first, we made some friends at the Real Goods Solar Living Center in Hopland.  Cici enjoyed her usual run around and meet people, sniffing and licking feet every step of the way.
