Ten Tips: When Your Pet is Lost

First thing to do is to PREVENT your dog from getting lost by ensuring that your gate at home is closed or locked and your dog cannot get out of it. When you are traveling, keep your dog on leash with you at all times.

Prepare ahead of time for the worst case scenario. If your dog has a microchip, make sure that it is registered with the company with your current contact info. Cici’s is with HomeAgain and they also have a service that if she is lost, I can call them and they will send alerts out to all of the locals including neighbors, vets, and SPCA. Plus, if she is found 500 miles away, they will fly her home for free.

Get good dog tags for your pet to wear at all times. And when you are traveling be sure that the contact info is correct.

Now a word here about Pet ID tags. We have tried numerous pet ID tags. By far the BEST ONE we have found is this one…

http://www.1cutepooch.com/

We LOVE the various options, the state driver’s license tag is our favorite. Second is the Hello name tag version. Your dog’s name and contact info and photo is imprinted on the ID tags. And what really set these apart for me (and Cici) is that you can put the tags into a leather pouch that attaches to the harness or collar. It was a little bit hard to open but once done, that was it. With all of Cici’s rolling around on her back,, at home and in the grass, all of the other tags we’ve tried came off within an hour or two. NOT with these tags. She’s worn them now for a few weeks. Imagine my surprise.  The ones below are similar to the ones sent us.

Nearly one in five lost pets goes missing after being scared by the sound of fireworks, thunderstorms or other loud noises, according to a survey by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. And, while losing your pet can be a traumatic experience for both you and your pet, have hope as 93% of dogs and 75% of cats reported lost are returned safely to their homes according to another survey.

If you do lose your pet, here are 10 top tips to help reunite you with your furry friend as quickly as possible:

  1. Contact or visit your local shelters and animal control organizations.  File a lost pet report with every shelter, dog pound and animal control office within a 60-mile radius of your home and visit the nearest shelters daily, if possible.
  2. Get the word out to all veterinarians in the area.  Sometimes people pick up a stray and drive it to a distant clinic.
  3. Search your neighborhood.  Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times each day. Enlist friends, family and others to help you.  Ask neighbors, letter carriers, and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out a recent photograph of your pet and information on how you can be reached if your pet is found.
  4. Go door to door and speak with your neighbors.  The more people know you have lost a pet, and that you are upset, worried and desperately trying to find your pet, the more people will call you if they see an animal in the woods or on the road, or in their backyard.
  5. Place posters and flyers throughout the neighborhood.  Post notices at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, at pet supply stores, and other locations. Also, place advertisements in newspapers and with radio stations. Include your pet’s sex, age, weight, breed, color, and any special markings. To avoid scams, when describing your pet, leave out one identifying characteristic and ask the person who finds your pet to describe it.
  6. Post info about your pet on all pet recovery websites and services.  Sites such as Craigslist.org, TheCenterForLostPets.com and FidoFinder.com allow you to broadcast your missing pet info quickly.  National pet care providers can be hired to assist you in your search for your lost pet.
  7. Consider using a lost pet recovery service.  There are now numerous lost pet alert services, such as FindToto.com, that will contact homes, veterinarians, shelters and animal control organizations for a reasonable fee.
  8. Place food and water outside your home.  Your pet may eventually return to your home when they get hungry or thirsty.  Consider placing the food in a rented or purchased humane pet trap to capture them.
  9. Tell everyone you see about your pet and ask them to keep their eyes open for her.  The more people you alert about your missing pet, the greater the chance someone will recollect seeing your pet in their area.
  10. Don’t give up.  Be aggressive in your search, get lots of help, get the word out right away – don’t wait a few hours “to see if she’ll come home on her own “– you need those early hours to put up posters and start your search.

Does your pet make a silly noise, have a special trick, a funny quirk or won an award for fetching beer, standing on their head or failed at puppy school?

Will your pet do ANYTHING for treats, food, toys or ????

Are you grieving the loss of your pet? Did they have an unusual illness?

Vicktory dogs rock

Fans of the Vicktory dogs will want to read this wonderful interview with Hector the Pit Bull and his family…

from Little Red‘s mama…
1-14-12 Can you say relaxed!!! This is Little listening to her new CD — “Through a Dog’s Ear”. She got this wonderful gift from her good friends CeliaSue and CiCi. We love it! All 5 dogs respond to this music in the most amazing way. After breakfast (which is at 5 am in my household), the dogs are up and down and in and out and have a hard time settling. Now I put on the Through a Dog’s Ear CD and the dogs all take extended naps while I have time to sink into a novel before the day really gets going. The music is classical piano pieces and the cadences are designed to calm dogs. It’s been clinically tested with shelter dogs and I can say unequivocally that it works!!! We’ve been listening to the music every morning in preparation for Little’s 1st acupuncture session. I played the CD for her to keep her calm. It was really a special time. I’ll write about it later this weekend. Right now we’ve got some more listening and napping to do.

Handsome Dan is adjusting to his new home with his baby sister Josephine. They like to take it easy on Sunday mornings.

Cherry Garcia also had acupuncture recently…

Ellen, Ray, Squeaker and Oscar are still looking for their forever homes. They are at Best Friends Animal Society.

best pet 4 you

what’s the best pet for you and your family?

some things to consider when adopting a pet, go to your local shelter and find your new best friend… spay/neuter, and if you are able, think about getting a pit bull / mix… older pet, chi, or some of the other pets that get left behind such as the black beauties! also, most pit bulls do not make it out of the shelters alive in the US. California has an overpopulation of chi’s. Too many healthy pets end up on death row due to overbreeding, puppy mills, greedy breeders, etc.

Even Bo, the First Dog, wants us to help stop euthanizing sheltered and homeless pets… imagine how much money goes towards killing shelter pets. Thinking about how many thousands of tax dollars goes towards killing animals makes me want to donate my tax return refund to a No kill shelter.

don’t forget some of the very special former Vick dogs are available for adoption… read all about how to give one of these amazing dogs a home…

connecting the dots: animal abuse, child abuse

Remembering all of the animals who have or are suffering and died because of humanity’s unawareness of who they are ♥ ♥ ♥ #Memorial Day and because of humanity’s inhumanity #Flower and other abused dogs, #thelittlereddog (and the other dogs murdered by Michael Vick and friends… the dogs stories are told in The Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant) abusers  are the real animals and so are kill shelters, puppy mill breeders, dog fighters and anyone who neglects, abandons, or treats an animal cruelly…

First, the story below is bringing lots of discussion. And I found out about another crackpot pit bull theory due to that. How can otherwise intelligent people believe such nonsense?  If I were to listen to them, I’d live in fear knowing that at any minute my dog’s head is going to explode and turn her into a monster (bone growth in the brain insane theory of the day), that she has a locking jaw and she is going  to attack me in my sleep one of these nights… Yes, blame the dog, it is much easier. Blame the breed.  Blame the “dangerous dogs.”  People cannot possibly be responsible in any situation, of course not.  I hate to be the one to burst your Denial Bubble BUT PEOPLE ARE RESPONSIBLE AND NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

Now to the connection between child and animal abuse…

https://www.facebook.com/#!/notes/pajama-scarfs/connection-between-animal-abuse-and-child-abuse-may-2011/118510801567898

I am researching this information to show a correlation between animal abuse and child abuse and the abusers. On a personal note, I am an MSW and have worked in the field of social work for twenty years and specifically in the field of child abuse for the past eleven years. In my professional setting, I have found that there are correlations between the two abuses and it is my hope that if more research can be done, these abuses can work together as future indicators…

Cruelty Connections (2011) reported that a study completed in 1997 by Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Northeastern University, animals abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than people without animal abuse histories. In addition, this report stated that studies over the past 25 years in psychology, sociology and criminology demonstrate that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty.

The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most reported killing and/or torturing animals during their childhood. Other studies have found consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of violence including child abuse, spouse abuse and elder abuse…

As quoted by Cruelty Connections, “Abusing an animal is a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the torture of a victim they know cannot defend itself.” They went further and compared this to the definition of rape. “Rape is a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the torture of a victim they know cannot defend themselves.” And again with domestic abuse including child abuse and spouse abuse, “Child abuse is a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the torture of a victim they know cannot defend themselves.” Their point is that by substituting a few pronouns, you have the SAME THING and to show A PATTERN. The line separating an animal abuser and an abuser of a person or child is much thinner than people want to believe…

…Cruelty Connections quoted FBI supervisory Special Agent Allen Brantly as saying “Animal cruelty…is not a harmless venting of emotions in a healthy individual; this is a warning sign….” Law makers and society as a whole should view it as exactly that, A WARNING SIGN, a clear indicator of psychological issues that can and often do lead to violent crimes….

…about one-third of children that are exposed to family violence will act out this violence most often against their own pets. That’s huge, one in three children in abusive households. Other abusers use family pets as a form of control over the family by either threatening or following through with the violence against the family pets….

…In fact, most animal abusers often feel powerless and have a warped sense of self and find their power in dominating another person or animal. These abusers pick defenseless and voiceless victims, children and animals…

(It) is imperative for law enforcement and law makers to understand the importance of recognizing animal abuse as a true felony crime punishable by real prison sentences. It also shows the importance of having an animal abuse registry nationwide which would alert not only shelters and rescues and save countless animals from future harm and/or death, it would also save human suffering as well. Animal abuse is, by and large a potential future indicator of domestic violence and criminal behaviors.

Now this weekend was a horrendous incident in NYC, what is going on in NYC lately??? anyway, a brainless woman left her YOUNG KIDS alone with three dogs locked in cages supposedly, but her boyfriend had trained the dog to be A KILLER…  well, I think I will just go out now and leave my kids alone with a trained killer… She should go to jail because she left her children IN HARM’s WAY… one of her children was killed and so starts the drumbeat of the media, if you call the New York Daily News media… should pit bulls be banned… and should ALL dangerous dogs be banned…

the paper could not decide whether the dog was a mastiff, pit bull or Cane Corso, but should pit bulls be banned, and the dog who killed the kid was wait for it…

NOT A PIT BULL…

it was a Cane Corso, an Italian bred dog trained to KILL by the mothers boyfriend…

this about sums it up, what someone wrote as a comment on a post,

first off – it was a cane corso mix, not a pit. secondly, the mother’s boyfriend taught it to attack and bite! he would wear a bite suit and encourage the dog to bite! so why are people blaming the breed?! the guy trained his dog to do this and then the stupid people left a trained aggressive dog alone with their child! idiots!”

NY Daily News has two polls on website called “Deadly Dog: Are pit bulls unsafe animals to have in apartments?” 62% have voted “No, they are wonderful dogs, it’s the people who abuse them that make them violent.”

There are two polls, one on the front page listed above…

http://www.nydailynews.com/index.html

and this one which last time I looked was in favor of banning dangerous dogs in the US by 50 something %… yes, blame the dogs… this is crazy

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/05/28/2011-05-28_brooklyn_boy_savagely_mauled_to_death_by_pit_bull_inside_his_apartment_.html

Poll Results

Should the U.S. ban certain types of deadly dogs?
Yes, some dogs are bred to be killers, they should be outlawed. 59%
No, a dog is not a weapon, it’s a pet, we don’t need more laws. 37%
I don’t know. 4%

They want to ban ALL DOGS in the US deemed dangerous… that means YOUR DOG.

and write to them.  Tell them what you think…

jkemp@nydailynews.com and lmcshane@nydailynews.com

yeah, it was the dog’s fault NOT, what part of JONES TRAINED THE DOGS TO KILL do people NOT get???  Jones and the mother SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH MURDER

lost pet, sequeal to sequel

Gee, duh wonder why I would write about this topic, huh…

but first a short rant and sequeal to the sequel…

found out that the roommate deliberately misled us to go in the WRONG direction to look for cici so that we would NOT find Cici, growl… and the SPCA charged me $103 to get Cici back, for what? not feeding her, not taking care of the few scratches she had on her body and above her eye and not taking her out to go potty. Nice job. Not.

Other roommate and I are considering getting our own place and moving outta here asap. Last night the loser acted like everything was all rosey, cannot have your cake and eat it, too… Cannot harm me and my dog and then expect me to let you pet her and play with her again. No can do. Crossed a BIG line.

Cici and I went shopping yesterday together. Took her because I could not leave her alone in house with loser. It worked out great actually. She licked everyone in the store, and got exercise. Imagine, me driving one of those carts (because I cannot walk much due to pain in legs, arthritis), and am like a bumper car driver, poor cici got really good at getting out of my way, turning with me when least expected, squeeeeal… oh no !

ok, now, sleeping with my bed hog the last two nights and this morning never felt so great. Again, thank you all for your prayers and support.

In a few ways, the horror of the last few days has been a blessing in disguise. Cici is now licensed, got her rabies shot, and I also found out about her microchip this morning. Yes, she has a microchip. But the previous owner who had put her in a horrific situation had it inserted. And I worried about her info being incorrect and how would I update it. A few years ago when Cici had been run over and had three surgeries I had asked the vet who did the surgeries about the chip, but there was so much going on, plus $3,500 to pay, that I never did anything about the chip.

Pet insurance will be covered in another blog post. Best Friends sent out an insurance bulletin. An insurance company they will benefit from if / when we sign up for it.

Have also heard mixed info about microchipping in general. Some say that the microchips cause cancer.

http://www.antichips.com/cancer/

pros and cons

http://www.suite101.com/content/should-i-microchip-my-dog-a96693

And others insist that the chip is completely safe.  Happy for your feedback.  Does your pet have a microchip? Do you know with what company and how they operate, what services they provide?

Well, guess what, I have the microchip number now, the phone number of the company and the company name so I called them. And found out that her microchip was never registered with the company. Yet she has a microchip number?  All I have to do the agent said is register her online with the correct/my current info for $16.99. That is the fee for life. And the first year you get amazing benefits…If I had the service, it would have saved me A TON of grief.

Hindsight is 20/20, you know.

Ok, so the company is called Home . If her chip had been registered, all I would have needed to do was call them and transfer the ownership and update the info, for free, no matter how long ago the chip had been installed.  Here is their spiel.

http://public.homeagain.com/membership-services.html

They say that their microchip is the only one that does not migrate around the pet’s body.

These services are included free with the cost of registering the microchip the first year. The $16.99 a year fee after the first year covers these services:

Rapid Lost Pet Alerts

Blog the Change: the real heroes

Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about American pit bull terriers because of the dog fighting issue and how these dogs have been abused, traumatized and killed by you know who. There are many other issues that we have not addressed including how badly maligned these innocent dogs are in the media, banning the breed in places like Denver, (breed specific legislation), spay/neutering the dogs so less of them end up dying in shelters across America, and so on.  A whole host of problems that need solutions.  Mostly, I have joked about polka dot discrimination here until recently.

Some of us dog lovers and pibble lovers specifically are working towards getting better press for the dogs. Better press, positive press in the media, can lead to changes in the way our society perceives the breed and ultimately help end / solve the other problems. And since I am a media person, what you didn’t know that about me, read my bio, hah. Anyway, I am a newspaper reporter/editor, freelance, and I also do PR, assist authors, small business owners and others obtain all the media attention/coverage they can handle. I say that because many people don’t really want a lot of media attention. Just a little. But I digress.

We have a HUGE opportunity with promoting the Lost Dogs book and banning Vick from EVER getting a dog to move the breed’s reputation from vicious bad mean dogs to who they really are, the sweet adorable dogs we know and love, in our society’s minds. And that’s why I get so crazy if you will, and want everyone to jump on the bandwagon with me. Ok, I admit I am annoying.  But it’s up to us to step up and speak out for these sweet adorable dogs. Because if we don’t, who will. Ok, sometimes my passion turns into obsession. I admit it. Am a crazy fan of the breed because of my Cici, who I rescued from out of the hands of a homicidal maniac. Have issues. I get it.  For me, it’s personal, as it should be.

You know that you are a pit bull rescuer, owner, lover when you realize you have not slept again all night because you found another crazymaking article, poll, or list saying how wonderful sick Vick is and you’ve just got to tell the world, that ain’t true.

How many pibble rescuers, owners, lovers does it take to turn the tide, tell the press/media, and the world how great these dogs are before we make a difference?  I know we are making a difference every day when people come up to me and tell me how great, sweet, gorgeous and silly Cici is. Or when I read a hero story about a pibble who saved someone. Little steps can add up to BIG change.

It is easy to feel discouraged especially when ignorant media people like Petside name ick (not a typo) a pet hero, ugh.  Now, hmmm choose, should we applaud a dog serial killer who used his own pet dog as bait and killed dogs with his own bare hands or should we choose BADRAP and Best Friends as pet heroes? DUH… And just when we thought we were doing good with the Lost dogs project, we find out that some of the books were returned to owners. This is  unclear at the moment. Seems like just part of the White House process of approving gifts. Hopefully.

But what other choice do we have but to keep on keeping on, every day, in small and big ways to help these dogs? I take my inspiration from heroines like Donna Reynolds from BADRAP and the heroes and heroines at Best Friends who have taken care of the v-dogs and are taking care of them and other dogs, as well as Our Pack, Monterey SPCA, the gang at Pit Bull Positive and the other pit bull rescuers who are so dedicated and committed to the breed. If they can patiently, lovingly and daily do the work of caring and training these dogs, and have for years, then so can I and so can you.

Since the mass media has yet to name the REAL heroes, I am calling them out here right now and so I hope you will too. Give them a standing ovation, a big cheer, a huge shout out, folks, yell from the rooftops. Also translate that into donations to keep them doing this great work. For the breed, for the dogs. I know you care. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t have read this far.  Translate that caring into action. Baby steps every day have a ripple effect in the long term.

Also, I consider it an honor to tell people about The Lost Dogs book because imagine how much it took for author Jim Gorant to not only write this tale but also now to deal with the press/media about it.  He deserves a lot more kudos, too.  As I tell people every day, not only should they read the book to learn the facts about ick, (again, not a typo, heh heh 🙂 but also because IT IS the best written book I’ve read in a long long time.  Gorant is a GREAT writer. He wove a tale with suspense, not much gore (2-3 paragraphs tops), and a TON OF HEART, for the dogs. The book honors the dogs and is a living testament to the TRUE HEROES of this tale.  I pray that I could write like that some day. So please buy the book, send it to the media, your local media, the national media, Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg, specifically need to read the book. Write a letter to your editor at the local newspaper. Everyone benefits when you do. The dogs, their rescuers, Jim Gorant and our world. Win, win, win win win.

I also want to thank all of the crazy people who sent the books to the White House. Anna B., Catherine HB, Katie M., Dawn SB and 200+ others, you know who you are. None of you sent the book for the limelight attention or even the gifts some will be winning at my contest, They all did it because they love the dogs and want to help BADRAP and Gorant. Hats off to you nutty dog / animal people of the world !  (Below are photos of Anna’s sweet rescue dogs and Dawn’s glass tile charms). You, too, are my heroes and inspiration.

Last but definitely not least is this hero who speaks out so eloquently about this. You gotta read the article the Pit Bull Guru Drayton Michaels wrote called Sympathy for the Devil: Softening M. Vick’s image click it and pay it forward.

Now that is my soap box and I will go gently back into the night, actually into my bed to cuddle with Cici.  She is the best dog ever.  Does she have a sweet face or what?

oh well, it’s 6 pm I posted this early early early this morning, but just realized now I was supposed to put the code here, duh, oh my dog, no wonder, early to post, late to link/code 🙂

update:

Good News: The White House has not rejected the books… it takes days for approval, need to be radiated etc…. Can’t wait for them to get the 200+ Lost Dogs on their desk!!!

Apparently some people’s Lost Dogs books were returned from the White House.  200+ books were sent including one by the author Jim Gorant.

I called the White House this morning and was told that they discourage sending gifts, in general and cannot confirm or deny whether gifts were received. they also said that the books that were sent back probably did not pass their security protocol, whatever that is or means.

I suggest that people send poochecards with the lost dog book jpg on the front cover to the President to get the message across. if enough people do this, it will have impact.  I also suggest that you write letters to the editor of your local newspaper.  If you do, please let me know. Thanks for all you do.

there is a contact form to send to obama or you could print out the cards and mail them to him. he receives 50,000 letters a day, why not add to the pile?

I also sent out a press release today and posted it here:

http://pitbullpositive.ning.com/profiles/blogs/lost-dogs-muzzled-by-the-white

There are 77.5 million dogs in the United States. Millions of voters of President Obama are dog owners. Two hundred-plus lost dogs were sent to the White House but some of them have been turned away. President Obama has a lot on his plate, especially with the events in Tucson. However, many voters feel strongly that he needs to address this issue, also related to violence in our nation…

I was just was informed about this debacle last night… you might want to send your returned books to these ignorant people… am going to issue another press release about the lessons our children are learning… ie, if/when you are rich and famous and can play football, you can do all manner of despicable cruel things including fight dogs, kill them with your bare hands, drown and electrocute them, and never show any remorse, and voila, you are a hero…

I suggest that if Vick wanted to prove himself, that he l. go on Barbara Walters with author Jim Gorant, Donna Reynolds from BADRAP and Francis Battista from Best Friends Animal Society and tell the American people in detail exactly specifically in all the gory details what he did.  If/when that ever happens, maybe people will forgive him. Chance of that happening, zero.

2. that he donate a BIG chunk of change, millions of dollars of his OWN FREE WILL to the pit bull rescue organizations who took care and are taking care of the dogs he brutalized.  Chance of that happening, zero.

3. Clean up dog poop for the rest of his life. Chance of that, zero.

add your comments to the 50+ bashing them for being so ignorant that they would name youknowwho, he who shall not be named, as #10… a pet hero, indeed… they owe the REAL HEROES a BIG APOLOGY.
