Blog the Change: Imagine a No Kill Nation

Ever since I rescued my gal Cici, became involved with the Patrick movement, and learned about how abused and cruelly some animals are treated (pit bull breeds) at shelters and beyond through Breed Specific Legislation, and pet owners who should NEVER be pet owners, and also reading Nathan Winograd’s solution-oriented books and research about USA animal shelters, I’m committed to sharing the No Kill Equation and philosophy in hopes of Making a Difference. This cause is near and dear to my heart. NO healthy nor adoptable pet should be euthanized EVER. And no animal deserves to be abused and treated cruelly. These should be self evident and morally binding contracts that human beings have with the animals but some humans appear to have other agendas going on.

No animals should be killed because of their breed, because they were fought by criminals to make money, and no animals should be killed due to lack of space or cages. If some shelters can FLY dogs and cats to safety and new homes (Hawaii, California and other places),

http://celiasue.com/2013/04/12/saving-pets-lives/

http://www.seattledogspot.com/blog/dog-blog/post/rescue-group-flies-150-dogs-in-high-kill-shelters-to-the-northwest-for-adoption

then there is JUST NO EXCUSE for the killing of healthy and adoptable animals. I am NOT saying it is easy to be a shelter director and to make these decisions. AND what I am saying is that if it is your JOB is to humanely take care of animals and you are BEING PAID to do so, then you have a moral and ethical obligation to DO THE JOB of humanely taking care of animals and that DOES NOT INCLUDE KILLING animals when you have NOT implemented ANY part of the No Kill Equation.

‘And what if your pet is missing and ends up at a shelter?

According to Nathan Winograd:

“When their dog was lost, this family looked for him where most people do–at the well known County shelter. They looked for him every day for two weeks. They did not find him. Why? The City has a small, relatively unknown shelter, which is where he was. When they told the County where they were from, apparently no one there thought to tell them to check the City shelter or even that there was one. That would have been helpful information. They simply filed a lost report and told them to check the kennels, which they dutifully did, regularly.

But when they discovered that the City had its own small shelter, they went there and there he was, where he had been for two weeks. Thankfully, the City shelter does not kill animals or he would have been dead (California’s holding period is only 72 hours). Every day, shelters kill stray animals at the end of their holding periods, claiming people are irresponsible. In fact, the reasons people do not find more of their lost animals are a bit more complex.

In this article for the No Kill Advocacy Center, Missing Pet Partnership explains the reasons why more strays are not reclaimed and how shelters can triple the number of dogs and increase the number of cat who end up back home by seven-fold or more: http://bit.ly/1050UPb

When the dog saw his family, he went crazy. When the family saw their dog, they did, too. Killing is not an act of love. It is an act of violence. No Kill is love.”

Off the top of your head, imagine you are a shelter director… and you have a bunch of cats and dogs in your shelter… let’s say 50…  and you want to go No Kill… killing is no longer an option… you have 10 empty cages and a rescue effort brings in another 30 animals… what are you going to do???

Here is my list:

l. double or triple up some of the dogs/cats in cages

2. hold an adoption event, extend adoption hours and/or discount adoption fees

3. call upon volunteers and rescues in the area to foster some of the pets

4. bring some of the cages/kennels into the lobby to make the pets more visible for adoption

5. call the media to advertise the pets up for adoption

6. call other community organizations in the area to see if they can take a few pets

7. call sponsors, school organizations, teachers and ask if they would let you bring a few animals to school for an adoption event

8. call business chamber of commerce and other networks and ask for their assistance with adopting pets

9. call pet food express and other pet shops that DO NOT sell pets and ask if a few of the pets can be put in cages there for adoption

10. hold a pet-a-thon, adopt a pittie, black dogs or cats or whatever day every saturday or friday or whatever day

11. ask for help, ask staff to call upon others in the community to solve this problem

12. bring pets to the local mayor’s office with the media and ask the community for support

Some of these can be done on a regular (weekly) basis …

Think outside the cage/kennel and STOP Killing healthy, adoptable pets and STOP the lame excuses…

People that defend killing animals make me think of the part during the Alice’s Restaurant saga where the guy sings “I want to kill… I want to kill…” He has gone to the draft board and is trying to get out of going to Vietnam. He is trying to convince them that he is crazy. Just admit to the public that you want to kill animals… Own up to it. And if the public is (rightly) horrified, then grow a conscience and STOP KILLING ANIMALS.

Seems to me that our culture rewards abuse, torture and violence on all sorts of levels. Look at all of the wars the USA has started and continued. How we cannot get legislation for gun control, background checks, even after small children were shot down in Newtown, CT,  how we are taught to blame the victims of crimes and how little animal abusers are punished by our faulty Justice system.

People often mention – with pride – that the United States is the most powerful nations on earth. And it’s true. We’re also 12th in per capita income, 50th in infant survival rate, and 51st in life expectancy. But we can blow up more than anybody else, so we’ve got that going for us. (Source: CIA World Fact Book)

“We are a nation of animal lovers, and we, and the animals we love, deserve better. We deserve shelters that reflect our progressive and compassionate values, not thwart them. We now have a solution to shelter killing and it is not difficult, expensive, or beyond practical means to achieve. Only one thing stands in the way of its widespread implementation: a deeply troubled and dysfunctional animal protection movement that undermines the effort at every turn.

550098_519035701470278_830906525_n

“Through the No Kill movement, we can create a country in which it is illegal to kill animals who enter shelters. We can create a country in which children are raised with higher expectations for the treatment of animals—and an understanding and acceptance that animals have legal rights. And we can establish powerful advocates for the well-being of animals in every community by reclaiming the thousands of shelters across our nation, and reorienting them away from killing and back to their founding missions: to advocate for and save animals.”   Nathan Winograd

Let’s make a difference for our country and the people and animals in it.

The No Kill conference takes place July 13-14 in Washington, D.C.

TODAY is the last day for Just One Day rescuers and shelter staff to get a deep discount and for municipal shelter directors to register to get in free.

Happy Patrick day

Happy 2nd Re-Birthday, Patrick! We will NEVER forget nor ever stop hurting from what you endured at the hands of a monster, but we will not let evil win. Your suffering started a world-wide, anti-cruelty campaign and helped millions of animals. We LOVE you and are grateful for your NEW LIFE!

Imagine there’s no cruelty

It’s easy if you try
No abuse, starvation or neglect
Above us only sky
Imagine all the pit bulls
Living in loving homes…

Imagine there’s no BSL
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or fight for
And no dog fighters too
Imagine all the pit bulls
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no kill lists
I wonder if you can
No need for chains, puppy mills, or shelters
A brotherhood of canine and human
Imagine all the pit bulls
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Dogs and birds and shuttle, oh my

Does your dog ever do weird or strange things?

Occasionally, Cici will run around the house barking for no discernible reason (today and yesterday afternoon). In the yard, too.

In the too smart for her own good category, lately, she stands by the glass door to the yard waiting for me to open the door for her.  Except when I get up to do so, she runs back to the chair I was sitting on and jumps up on it (her throne). She pretends to need to go out just to get me off “her” chair. Smart dog.

The other day I noticed a dead pigeon in our yard. I thought that Cici ate it and was all worried about it. All that was left of it was its wings. Turns out, we now think, a cat or hawk dropped the dead bird in our yard. Cici was sniffing at it but she did NOT eat it. Good dog.

She jumped in a UPS truck the other day for treats (the really nice driver lady stopped just for Cici) and she did not want to get out. What a great idea… a neighborhood treat truck for dogs.

what do you think of our new look?

Cici did not try to jump up to see the shuttle but this is a cool photo in the hood…

KSBW Producer Cassady Evers shot this cool photo of the shuttle flying over the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Crunchy treats

Clear Conscience Pet LLC has introduced a new line of dog treats designed to meet the needs of stomach-sensitive dogs, as well as appeal to picky pets.

CCP sent us the Ocean Dreams and Peace Berry treats to taste test. Cici definitely prefers the Ocean Dreams since she seems to enjoy kelp. She is not a big fan of fish but prefers meat/protein based treats and food in general. Overall,  I think that the Ginger Yaps would be good for her joints and Pumpkin would be yummy for her tummy, too.  Although I like the Peace Berry ones for her, so far she has not been eating them. Maybe this will change. She has been known to change her mind about treats so I will continue to offer them to her. I think she enjoys the crunchiness of these treats. She is not a big chewer, usually just gulps stuff down, but chewing these treats seems to be something she enjoys. The treats are not too hard, I can break pieces apart and feed her smaller bits which I like. I love the ingredients in these treats. Almost want to eat them myself. Blueberry and Lavender sounds so yummy.

Ingredients:
organic buckwheat flour, honey, organic canola oil, organic kelp, organic chamomile

The new line, Cruncherz Gluten & Grain-Free Dog Bakery, consists of four baked dog treat recipes formulated to be gluten-free and grain-free. The treats are made with a buckwheat flour as the base ingredient, in four organic recipes: Peace Berry with organic blueberry and organic lavender, Ocean Dreams with organic kelp and organic chamomile, Ginger Yaps with organic ginger and organic parsley, and Pumpkin Patch with organic pumpkin and organic sage.

Buckwheat is high in magnesium and has a complex array of amino acids.  Ginger helps aid in digestion and inflammation in the joints.  Chamomile and lavender help to provide a sense of calm, while sage is an herb that has been clinically proven to aid in cognitive function.  Pumpkin is full of fiber & antioxidants, and the blueberries provide a bounty of anthocyanins, while honey plays host to an amazing amount of minerals.  The cold-ocean kelp (from the North Atlantic Ocean) contains dozens of micro-nutrients that land-living beings need to thrive.

The ancient Celtic symbol that you see on our biscuits represents the power of 3 (like in Charmed, the TV series).  Some say it’s the cycle of life (life, death & re-birth), or it represents the Earth being the 3rd planet from the sun, or the foundation of all music, the triad.  3 is a powerful number in life and our 3 spirals on the biscuits represents all of that goodness in a healthy snack for your dog. Made in the USA.

Buckwheat is actually a berry.  In grains there are various parts of the kernel like the germ, endosperm and bran.  Buckwheat contains only the endosperm.  It’s actually related to rhubarb & sorrel, and not related to any cereal grains or grass.  Our buckwheat is milled in a dedicated buckwheat mill making sure that cross-contamination is not an issue.  Buckwheat adopted the “wheat” part of the name simply because of how it is grown, harvested and processed.  Rest assured, there is no wheat or grains in Cruncherz!

Cici has scarfed up the whole bag of Ocean Dreams. Am sure other dogs will enjoy these treats, too. Four paws up !

Super-Doggies

March 23, is National Puppy Day, and there is a new cast of animated characters helping to promote the adoption of dogs all over the world – the Super-Doggies.

The Super-Doggies are a trio of animated singing dogs featured in a music video encouraging people to visit dog shelters with hopes of giving abandoned puppies a caring home. The Super-Doggies feature Barack Obama’s dog, Bo and Vladmir Putin’s dog, Buffy.  In fact, in this video both world leaders join their dogs for a global dance party.  Lending a hand in the creation of this video is none other than Eugeniy (Eugene) Kuritsyn, the 2012 Oscar award-winning animator of Rango.

Eugeniy has teamed up with Grammy Award winning producer Neal Pogue who works with musicians like Nicky Minaj, Lil Wayne, Outkast and Pink.  The effort is also getting guidance from marketing veteran Bruce Kirkland who directed The Beatles Anthology project, the Beastie Boys, the Spice Girls, Radiohead, and Everclear.

Border Collie is the first Dog to lead an Occupation

Border collies were bred to herd livestock including sheep. Border Collies are also noted for their intelligence. Occupy protesters are not known for being sheep, so it must be Shelby’s intelligence that prompted Occupy Denver to elect this 3-1/2 year old Border Collie mix as their leader. That and being pressured by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock to name a leader in order “to deal with City and State officials.”

One of the organizers, Al Nesby, nominated Shelby as the group’s leader after filmmaker Michael Moore showed up and rubbed him the wrong way by refusing to follow general assembly rules. Shelby’s bodyguard, filmmaker Peter John Jentsch, was happy to comply and Shelby received a landslide vote.  Shelby maintains a strict protest against leashes and has pawticipated in the Denver Occupation for the past month. Protesters have already made an official request for Shelby to meet with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.

Denver politicians are probably scratching their heads wondering who let the dogs out.

But since corporations are now considered people, the Denver Occupiers feel that Shelby is closer to a person than any corporation: She can bleed, she can breed, and she can show emotion. “Either Shelby is a person, or corporations aren’t people,” said a Shelby supporter at the time of her election.

Shelby is getting her paws wet becoming a real political animal. It is expected that she will not condone any of the usual dog-eat-dog tactics.

Shelby exhibits heart, warmth, and an appreciation for the group over personal ambition that Occupy Denver members feel are sorely lacking in the leaders some of them have voted for on national, state, and local levels.

Newly-elected leader Shelby will be leading this Saturday’s Occupy Denver march against Corporate Personhood, and invites all other civic minded dogs (and their leash-holders) to join.

Cici and I would have really enjoyed a Pit Bull dog being named the leader of the Denver Occupation since pit bulls and pit bull mixes are banned in Denver. That would have been a real coup for the breed. It would take a special ambassador for the breed to lead that march.

Is YOUR dog up for becoming the SpokesDog / Leader of the Pack of your local Occupation?  Cici welcomes dogs of ALL breeds to provide leadership. What does YOUR dog occupy most of the time? Tell US Your Story (photos, too). Thanks.

They love making fun of the demonstrators’ looks, but it’s pretty difficult to step outside the system and live outdoors without looking a little rough in the eyes of the moneyed classes. Jesus and his disciples probably looked pretty rough to some people, too. I’m sure the rich people looked down their noses at Him after He overturned those tables.

That’s not done in polite company.

Think about it: A guy rides into town on a donkey. Then he says the moneyed interests are exerting too much influence on the government – and on some of the religious elite, too. And what was that about the wealthy? Oh, yeah – “It’s easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter heaven.”

No matter what you believe or don’t believe spiritually, it’s clear that oligarchic wealth has corrupted our politics, polluted our culture, and debased our basic sense of morality.

And that’s why they’re we’re protesting. I’ve been to New York’s demonstration, and Washington’s. Next stop is LA. But they’re all over the country.

If you haven’t been to one yet, why not stop by? ‘m not an organizer, just an admirer, but consider this an official invitation: Your presence is requested as democracy – and history – unfold before us.

creating a peaceful dog oasis

imagine creating a fido delicious peaceful paradise backyard both for us humans and cici…

I’d like it to have a garden, fountain, pool/water, a sand box for cici to dig and a bunch of plants, trees with fruit… perhaps…

need a wooden box, organic soil, flowers and plants, wheat grass, grass and oat grass seeds, veggie, fruit seeds, wild bird seed, rocks, herbs, water fountain, fruit trees, sand box and more…

already put an ad on freecycle and craigslist, but so far, nada.

if you have any other suggestions on how to get any of the above for free or inexpensively, or if you’d like to donate, every little bit helps, thanks.

At the Cambria Pines Lodge, they have an amazing organic garden with a flower bed (shown below)… would love to recreate something like that. we’ve got a wheelbarrow and a wooden futon frame that I could get creative with.

Also want to create a community garden… and have artists paint the fence with murals. there is graffiti already on one side of the fence (outside) that could be painted over… images of PEACE… calming… Findhorn garden… a showcase for talented artists in this community…

this is an amazing peace site:

http://www.wherepeacelives.org/peace-murals.html

how to do this without spending a fortune????

and just how to do this hands on practically…   this site has some great ideas, tips and resources…

http://www.heraldtimesonline.com/stories/2007/02/10/homes.nw-901049.sto

Nobody speaks for Fido when it comes to the backyard landscape. Yet he spends more time there than anyone else in the family.

What I call a K-9 conscious garden design blends amenities for you and your dog into a harmonious space. It also addresses the most common safety problems that can hurt your pooch and send your vet bill into the stratosphere.

Dogs are naturally mobile creatures, forever on the hunt for food like their ancestors the wolves. When they are cooped up with nothing interesting or mysterious to explore, they adopt undesirable behaviors out of frustration and boredom. Planting a tall grass meadow with flowers is not only a beautiful, wildlife-friendly form of gardening, it gives your dog hours of investigatory pleasure every day. Sure, manicured lawns are great for Frisbee, but when you’re at work that meadow becomes a primal bit of heaven for man’s best friend.

If you live in the city and don’t have room for a meadow, here’s a good alternative. Wheat grass juice is a big health drink for us and it’s just as good for dogs. They will naturally graze on it when they need the nutrients it contains rather than browsing your flowerpots. Consider planting wheat grass in low, wide troughs. Use flat plastic under-the-bed storage boxes with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage. Fill the boxes with potting soil and sow with seed. Dirt-cheap organic seed for wheat and oats can be found in the bread-making section of the health food store.

Since ancient times, herbs have been used to repel fleas in human dwellings. They’ll also discourage fleas in the yard and in your dog’s general hangout areas. If you grow enough of them you can cut the branches, dry and use them to stuff your dog’s bed for a natural pesticide. Many herbs were once known as fleabane because they are so widely used for this purpose, and some may also discourage ticks.

Plant a fleabane garden or incorporate fleabane plants around the garden. When my dog Dot rubs against them I can smell the aromatic oils on her fur, which not only discourages pests, it covers up dog smell with fragrance! I recommend Menta pulegium, also known as pennyroyal. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthum) is also beautiful silvery gray plant and quite effective, too. Old-fashioned tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is top of the list, as well. All are perennial. When you shop, insist on the botanical names to ensure you get the exact plant that repels fleas.

Keep in mind, too, that some plants and landscaping materials are very bad for dogs. Vets say that when dogs are bored they will chew on most anything, and when that something is toxic you have a problem. Cocoa bean mulch contains caffeine and hulls of nuts falling from trees are rich in tannin, so both can be highly toxic if chewed. These include domestic walnuts or wild hickory. A few of the many plants poisonous to dogs are castor bean, foxglove, pokeweed, buckeye and yew. The master list of dog-toxic plants can be found at the ASPCA web site,http://www.aspca.org/toxicplants.

happy dogs sunbathing… cici LOVES to lie in the dirt in the yard and enjoy the rays… this is Little Red with her new dog pal / new home… (Little Red, one of the former v-dogs)…

A tip for pooches eating plants:

If your dog is chewing up your plants, this spicy, cayenne pepper

spray solution may be enough to discourage them. Be

aware that it requires repeated applications. The effectiveness

wears off in a day or two. The rain and automatic sprinklers

also wash it away. A dog won’t be discouraged by just one hot

bite either. They’ll go back and test it a few times with undesirable

results before they finally accept that the plant is not

worth tampering with. Use this spray every day for a couple

of weeks to condition the dog to leave the plant alone. Be sure

to spray the plant early in the morning so that the spray can

dry out before the sun hits the leaves.

1 Tablespoon cayenne pepper

2 Tablespoons powdered garlic

2 Cups hot water

Stir the cayenne pepper and garlic into hot water. Allow it to

set a few minutes then strain the remnants of the spices

through a fine kitchen sieve. Pour the strained liquid into a

plant spray bottle. Use as needed.
