Wonder woofers and owners who won’t live without them

“Housing First!” If you were a homeless woman, or on the verge, housing would be your top priority.

Alas, affordable housing is so lacking in Monterey County, that “housing first” is the slogan all agencies, both public and private, use in dealing with affordable housing across the board.  (Note: Cici and I wish this were true)

A special category of need exists that involves homeless women with pets, a few being cats and the majority dogs. The exact number of Monterey’s homeless pet owners is unknown.

Overnight dog housing needed

Landlords don’t want pets and agency-housing doesn’t usually allow them.

Homeless women don’t want to give up their dogs, so they sleep in their cars or on the street to be with their animals.

One reason for temporary suspension of the Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program for Women (I-HELP) was the fact female guests weren’t willing to give up their canine  companions in exchange for food, personal amenities and shelter.

Suggestions have been made that an I-HELP for Pets program be devised through which pets can be sheltered at a designated location, then reunited with their owners during the daytime hours.

Between 400 and 500 homeless women were estimated to live on the Monterey Peninsula before the Soberanes Fire dislocated residents who were burned out over the past three weeks. Of this number, an unknown percentage includes pet owners who consider their four-legged friends as more than just canines. They’re their Wonder Woofers.

A few words about Wonder Woofers

Cici is a poster-dog for this column. She’s a loving Dalmatian-Pit Bull mix seen here celebrating her 10th birthday last month. Cici is a Wonder Woofer. Along with her Wonder Worker owner, Cici is homeless.

cicibug

Since Cici can’t define Wonder Woofer, I’ll try.

A Wonder Woofer is a warm-blooded furry friend who speaks from the heart in arfs, ruffs and woofs we humans call barks. A Wonder Woofer is on the job 24/7, never complaining.

A Wonder Woofer likes to snuggle and wiggle and lick, as well as serenade his or her human with  love songs sung unconditionally through squeals, whimpers, whines and hums.

A Wonder Woofer’s vocal range is extensive, also being capable of issuing protective warnings by yipping, growling and snarling if danger exists.

CeliaSue Hecht, Cici’s loving owner, is a former journalist who’s so devoted to her pet that she defines herself as a “dog traveler.”

Unlike many homeless women who don’t know where to turn or how to get started to solve the housing crisis, CeliaSue is a 66-year-old articulate activist. Despite having survived breast cancer and being in need of medical care and housing, CeliaSue is seeking solutions to the housing crisis. A current example is this ad in Craigslist:

RVs for Seniors with Dogs

If you live on the Central Coast of California and have an RV, camper, or trailer or know someone that does and would like to provide a home for a senior or veteran, please call CeliaSue at 702-225-8206…we have a list of those in need of housing.

Hundreds of senior women have been displaced with their pets. Single women without children, women who are not mentally ill, not drug addicts, not alcoholics, with low income, not working or cannot find work, veterans, and other seniors with dogs, over 50 years of age, some ill and whose health has deteriorated without shelter.

Thank you for your kindness.

Doggie Day books

This week was National Dog Day, ok, we missed it by a day or two… well, here are three VERY different doggie books that you just HAVE TO READ if you love doggies… and you might just pick up a few for your fellow doggie friends for the holidays (which are going to be here sooner than your dog can chew up a dog bone).

250_Paw-Order

The exciting and funny / hilarious new Chet and Bernie book, Paw and Order, which you’ve all been waiting with doggie breath to come out so you can read it. Now you can.

Harry Truman once said “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”

Cici and I were very happy to get our paws on the latest (7th in the series) Chet and BernieL book, Paw and Order because we are always up for another hilarious adventure seen thru Chet’s canine eyeballs. The story begins in New Orleans. And Bernie’s Porsche and a trip to a BBQ joint turns into a fiasco with some motorcycle dudes who have big necks.  But no matter, Chet and Bernie are on the case and a team not to be messed with.

The dog-eat-dog world of Washington DC will never be the same after Chet and Bernie’s Little adventure. They could have gone straight home from New Orleans but what fun would that have been? They instead detoured because well, Bernie’s sometime girlfriend Suzie the newspaper reporter is now working at the Washington Post and she is on a BIG story that she cannot talk about. So of course,  Chet sniffs around the capital city and Bernie ends up arrested. An international conspiracy unfolds and Chet encounters a strange new animal, a guinea pig, who holds the fate of the nation in his paws.

Chet and Bernie are always a winning combination. With Chet’s sharp eyes and cool nose and Bernie’s talents, they cannot lose, although it is always suspenseful along the way. Another great read for dog lovers, guinea pig aficionados, and Washington DC insiders and outsiders.

Off the Leash: A Year at the Dog Park  by Matthew Gilbert

If you have ever visited a dog park and met some strange, weird, quirky, bizarre dog people, then you will relate to this book. It is about an array of dogs and their people who gather at Amory Park, overlooking Boston near Fenway Park.

Matthew Gilbert, a longtime TV critic at The Boston Globe, describes his reluctant trip into the dog park subculture, as the first-time owner of a stubbornly social Yellow Lab puppy named Toby. Like many Americans, he was happily accustomed to the safe distance of TV viewing and cell-phone web surfing, tethered to the digital leash. But the headstrong, play-obsessed Toby pulls him to Amory, and Amory becomes an exhilarating dose of presence for him. The joyous chaos of wrestling dogs and the park’s cast of offbeat dog owners – the “pack of freaks” – gradually draw him into the here and now. At the dog park, the dog owners go off the leash, too.

Meetings at the dog park can be mayhem, chaotic and fun, depending upon  the day. Sort of a daily or weekly canine soap opera. Dogs love/hate one another as do their owners.  When the dogs have disagreements, so do their human companions. And sometimes the human beans are even worse than the dogs when they are off the leash.

This is a very funny, sunny, very right on, portrait of life at the dog park and relationships and encounters between dogs and the dog owners. Dog Parks: Enter at Your Own Risk. Dog parks are not for the faint of heart or skittish. And Gilbert knows right where the fun begins and ends.  His honest and enthusiastic memoir will make you rethink going to the dog park or yearning to find doggie friends and a pack to belong to.

Dogs Rule, Nonchalantly by Mark Ulriksen is just plain silly. EVERYONE who is ANYONE with a DOG that is KNOWS that Dogs Rule. Of course, my Polka Dot Princess agrees with me on that one. She Rules this household. Of course.  Ulriken has been working for a little publication called The New Yorker, where he has been a regular contributor since 1993. He has achieved more than 40 magazine covers to his credit.   This book offers great illustrations of doggies, and funny lines to go with the images. We were offput by one illustration of what seemed to be a bad stereotype of a bully breed dog. We do not like those stereotypes as you know. Other than that, numerous breeds were represented in hilarious detail. And some of the jokes were VERY funny.  If you live or love a dog, you know how amusing they can be. And this book capitalizes upon canines and their goofyness with refreshing charm and a breath of doggie sunshine. Dogs penchant for stinky things. Dogs and their always sunny disposition (until you are leaving the house).  And you know the rest of their quirks.

Books have gone to the dogs

There’s a wide world of dog books to explore… here are a few very different ones…  each make great gifts for animal lovers.

Fistful of Collars, 5th in the Spencer Quinn series, with Chet the dog narrator/sleuth… Chet and Bernie the dynamic duo of the Little Detective Agency encounter a cat, Hollywood and are off on another funny action adventure. Hollywood has gone to the dogs and Chet and Bernie’s new assignment is a self-proclaimed cat person, and his feline friend Brando has taken an instant dislike to Chet. And a fun tale ensues.

We drove deeper into the desert, Bernie at the wheel, Thad riding shotgun with Brando on his lap, me still in back. After not too long, Bernie turned off the blacktop and followed a dirt track up toward some big red rocks, a track that petered out before we got there. Bernie stopped the car.

“What’s going on?” Thad said.

“Want to see something interesting?” Bernie said.

“Like what?” Thad checked his watch.

“Let’s make it a surprise.”

“I hate surprises.”

Bernie smiled, one of those smiles of his that’s just for himself—and me, of course, goes without saying—and we all piled out of the car, me hitting the ground first. We walked up toward the red rocks, me in the lead, then Bernie, Thad, and Brando, actually moving under his own power. Once—this was back on our trip to San Diego—Bernie said that the fog came in on little cat feet, a remark that I’d never been able to forget no matter how hard I’d tried, and that was how Brando moved along, like he was made of cloud, weighing nothing, although in fact he looked pudgy to me.

Royal Treatment, a Natural Approach to Wildly Healthy Pets by Dr. Barbara Royal is a handy encyclopedia of the world of pets including what wild animals teach us, ailments including cancer with suggested cures, alternative ones and how to deal effectively with pets. Handy charts, tips, facts and info about diet, dog foods, raw food recipes, cat litter, what to do if your pet is hit by a car, bleeding, vomiting, experienced a trauma and so much more. There are specific stories of particular pets to illustrate the topics.

Dr. Barbara Royal is a passionate, dedicated, and innovative veterinarian with a unique approach to medicine. Her patients have included countless different species from German shepherds at her private practice, to baby owls in the wild, to zebras in the zoo. Her clients are the humans who live for their pets, much like she does. Her ability to lend a voice to sick or injured animals and carry out the best treatment for them is unmatched.

An expert diagnostician with a background in zoo and wildlife medicine, Dr. Royal has learned that adhering to the teachings of Western medicine is often not the best way to fully cure her patients. With the clinical experience to know when to use surgery, medications, and alternative methods, plus an observant and empathetic understanding of the evolutionary needs of her patients, she individually tailors the Royal Treatment to ensure that each pet (and owner!) lives as happily and healthfully as possible.

The knowledge she has gained from wild animals gives her valuable insight into the cat in your kitchen and the dog in your living room. Our pets have all evolved from wild species and adapted to domestic life in many ways, but their natural characteristics are genetically fixed. In order for our pets to meet their full health potential, we must be mindful of these natural nutritional, emotional, and physical needs. Applying common sense in this way, along with the support of medicine, nutrition, elements of Eastern medicine, and physical rehabilitation, fosters an animal’s natural inclination toward optimal health and immunity. There is no placebo effect in animal medicine, and Dr. Royal has seen amazing results with her integrative approach, time and time again.

A must-have for all pet owners. Dr. Royal empowers animal lovers to lift their pets into a realm of natural health and happiness that will be palpable from shiny coat to bouncy step.

The Divinity of Dogs by Jennifer Skiff, True Stories of Miracles Inspired by Man’s Best Friend…

FromThe Divinity of Dogs: “As much as we look up at the stars and know there is more than life on earth, the divinity of dogs is just as unexplainable and profound. They may be the purest example of divine love in an earthly soul many of us ever experience. If we take their lead, open our hearts and embrace their love, we may just find our own journey a lot more enlightening.” Jennifer Skiff

“Whether you believe dogs are divine or a gift from the Divine, The Divinity of Dogs gives you permission to accept what you know: dogs provide us with a clear example of all that is good. They are healers, educators, protectors, and tangible examples of divine love. For those of you who agree with this philosophy this book confirms all we know and puts an exclamation point on it!

‘My dogs have been the reason I have woken up every single day of my life with a smile on my face. They have protected me from mean people and have given me insight into potential partners. They have been my children and my parents. They have loved me the most. I am among the ranks of millions of people who appreciate the souls of dogs and know they are a gift of pure love and an example of all that is good. More than anything, they have taught me how to be a better person. I’m not alone. The world is filled with people who have reached the same conclusion and are happy to share why.

• Scott Thornsley thought his life was over. He lost his job of 19 years, and his wife left him. He felt no one loved or wanted him. He decided to kill himself. At the very moment he chose to act on his decision, his Rottweiller Emma ran into the room, grabbed his hand ferociously, and pulled him to the front door. What happened next, in the darkest moment of his life, saved him.

• Joy Peterkin lost her home and belongings in Hurricane Katrina – but she still had her Chihuahua, Little Bit. Just as Joy was finding some normalcy in her life, Little Bit began persistently nudging a spot on her breast. In this book, we find out what Little Bit knew that doctors didn’t.

Suzann Yue’s Snort’s Special Gift is a very special book, one that transcends the death of a family pet and shows young ones the possibilities of life after death. Based upon the author’s family and their dog, Snort, with whom they all had a  good time, I must admit that I was touched reading the author’s daughter’s class essay on her best friend, Snort, after he had died. Apparently good writing skills run in the family!  Lin Wang’s nicely flowing watercolors add real depth and meaning to the poignant words of both the author and her daughter. I think that they were the real reason that my tears flowed so copiously.
Winner of a Mom’s Choice Award, this is a book to be treasured. The last page even includes a place to which you can affix your own personal pet photograph, along with suggested inscriptions.
Snort’s Gift, the only thing is the story started at the ending… there was no beginning or middle, so readers don’t really get to know the dog or family. How/when did they get the dog? how old was the dog? happy memories ? funny quirks of the dog?  Would have liked more info, specific details to fill in this important story.

The Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service by Beth Kendrick

A different take on a dating service. matchmaker matchmaker make me a match… a total sucker for mutts and down-on-their-luck rescue dogs, this book is Beth Kendrick’s love letter to canines everywhere.  Bad dogs and the women who love them will adore this funny and heartwarming tale about true love with a four legged furry friend.

Lara Madigan has a gift. She can help you find your soulmate—your canine soulmate, that is. As a dog trainer with a soft spot for strays, she’s found perfect homes for sulky Shih Tzus,  broken-down Border collies, and diabolical Dalmatians. But while she’ll always make room for one more rescue mutt, she’s not sure she’s ready to commit to another human being. Especially after her live-in boyfriend drops the bomb: He’s not a dog person.

Horrified and temporarily homeless, Lara and her furry pack move in with her mother, a wealthy fashionista who forbids even a single drop of drool. As word gets around the exclusive gated community, Lara is overwhelmed with demands for her services. A model wants personal training for her overweight “flabrador”; an aging socialite preps her pedigreed puppy for dog show domination… If Lara can survive the breakup, the outrageous requests of her high-maintenance clientele, and her dogs’ systematically destruction of her mother’s McMansion, she might finally find the rescue dog who rescues her in return– leading her straight to the guy who could be HER perfect match.

positive pit bull ads

the difference in pet advertising and pet policies is heating up on the pit bull front.  Some companies like 3M/Scotch are PIT BULL PROUD … and deserve KUDOS for displaying a cute pit bull dog in their display ads…

GOOD STUFF:  How about we thank a major corporation for throwing some much-needed pro-pittie advertising out there? Maybe call this the
“THANK YOU SCOTCH IT’S A PIT BULL!” campaign? 🙂 ~John

Maybe say something on the Scotch Facebook Page:

and also send it direct to the company via the Scotch lint roller:

Dog Time has created Mad Canines, if the characters on the Mad Men TV Show were dogs… one of the characters is portrayed as a pit bull/Viszla mix… hmmmm… what do you think?

seriously?  and then there is a chain pet store that sells toxic pet treats from China and have banned bully breeds from their doggie daycare…

sheesh… name change… from Pet Smart to Pet Stupid…

Anna MacNeil’s study shows pit bulls’ natural habitat is the bed and breed-specific behavior is cuddling.

dogs bite humans

It is a fact of life. Dogs, all kinds and breeds of dogs, bite people every day. Not because they’re bad. It is generally the HUMAN’s fault… the dog has been chained up, not neutered, running around loose, and/or the human has NOT or does not know how to read DOG body language.  Dogs communicate with us all the time. And we usually have NO Clue what they are telling us. Even when we live with them and love them.

I will speak for myself here. Half the time, I have no idea what Cici is trying to tell me. She mystifies me. She is barking or growling at me like she wants to go outside but then I open the door and she does not go out or she goes out for a minute and comes right back inside. What? She does not want to go out in the yard. Ok. She wants to go to the park down the street. We get to the park and she scavenges around looking for food. What? I feed her good food. What is she doing and why?

Right now, my sweet baby is sleeping in her crate, by the way. I thought it would take days or hours to get her in there. I need to confine her so that the torn ligament in her leg can heal and so she will not need surgery. And keeping her tethered was not working. So we got a crate yesterday. I got it set up, threw a few treats in there, she went inside and relaxed. I took her out to eat her lunch, she ate, then I threw a few treats in the crate and once again, she went inside. This time, she grumbled a bit about being in there but eventually, she fell asleep. Later in the afternoon, a couple hours later, I took her for a walk. We came back, same routine with the treats and she stayed in the crate and slept. Amazing dog my Cici. Surprises me every single day. She is very very good and makes it easy to give her supplements or medicine too. Stick a pill in a hot dog and she is good to go.

But I digress…

by now you’ve probably heard about the dog who bit the TV anchor in the face… this is a brilliant and emotional analysis of the entire situation… it gives context that most people do not know/realize, learn how to read dog language, and if a dog is traumatized and stressed, do NOT bring them to a TV studio for an interview… the dog had just been rescued and the TV people wanted to do a Feel Good story about the firefighter who saved the dog’s life… what could possibly go wrong?

http://wagandtrain.blogspot.com/2012/02/perfect-storm.html

what is so heartbreaking and important about this situation, is that often dogs are euthanized because of ignorant people like this. If the dog even looks like a pit bull, they can be put to sleep and/or taken away from their family and quarantined (like Lennox who did NOTHING but look like a pit bull, is not one). It is amazing that here we are in the 21st century and we are lagging so far behind in our thinking about animals, women, and other creatures. This male superiority/macho stuff has got to go. It is toxic in so many ways, hurts so many people and animals and our planet.

The lesson in these stories isn’t to be afraid of one type of dog or another, but to learn how to approach a dog, whether it’s a stray or just a dog you haven’t met before. By learning that, we learn how not to hurt the dog or ourselves. Prejudice just hurts everyone.

Pit bull mix attacked by Beagle

I live for the day this type of story is commonplace and makes the news.  It makes me ill to constantly see “news” stories that report that pit bulls mauled somebody or their dog. This story below is actually based upon an experience Cici and I had just yesterday. And Cici has been attacked at least five or six times. After she was thrown down on her back, throat attacked, blood drawn, Cici still wanted to play with the dog that attacked her. After her head was bitten by another vicious dog, she still has scars, she did not thankfully want to play with that dog.  Sometimes I think she is too forgiving. Don’t know if the dog yesterday was actually a Beagle because it was sort of old and brown and mangy looking. But suffice it to say that these types of stories never get reported, ever. Not now. But maybe someday they will.

SEASIDE, Ca. — A Seaside woman was walking her pit bull mix dog down San Pablo Street going to the store on Noche Buena when an 8 year old mangy-looking Beagle attacked her dog through an old dilapidated wooden fence. The owner of the Beagle apologized for his “overprotective” dog.  “He’s just an old guard dog doing his duty,” said the neighbor.

The Seaside Sheriff’s Office reports that 61-year-old Sue Grace was wary of walking on that side of the street because the Beagle had viciously tried to attack her dog once before. But the owner of the Beagle insisted that his dog was safe. She proceeded to the other side of the street after the man closed the fence door leaving the Beagle behind it. But as she and her pit bull mix proceeded down the street and passed the fence, the Beagle went crazy Wednesday afternoon.

Grace quickly pulled her dog away and went on her way. Her pit bull mix had been wagging its tail and wanting to play with the Beagle. But the Beagle growled viciously and tried to bite the pit bull through the fence.  Her dog, Cici, whines every time she goes by the street.  She still wants to play with the mean old Beagle.

In the past three years, 4 year old Cici has been attacked by a nasty Shiz Tzu, Cairn Terrier, mutt of unknown origin who got her by her throat drawing blood at a dog park, two Labrador retrievers, an unsocialized Jack Russell, Cocker Spaniel, and a Border Collie. She has played nicely with more than 600 dogs of many different sizes and breeds including poodles, Yorkies, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Dalmatians (she is part Dalmatian), Boxers, Great Dane, hound dog, Golden Retrievers (her favorite), Labradoodles, an Australian Shepherd she loved the most and many others.

Animal control does nothing about dogs unless they are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The pit bulls and pit bull mixes are blamed for the wrongdoing of other dog breeds such as malevolent Beagles even though American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier’s temperament testing studies have concluded that Beagles, Lassie (collies) and Toto dogs (cairn terriers) tested with scores below that of the Pit Bull breeds and mixes.

The American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS) conducts annual evaluations for all dog breeds, and pit bull mixes consistently rate higher than some of their more popular counterparts, including the Golden Retriever and Collie. Bully breeds also excel at the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training, which is a program that teaches good dog manners and responsible pet ownership.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), many dogs involved in attacks are incorrectly identified as bullies in media reports, which fuels the belief these breeds are always to blame. But the Center for Disease Control reports that the chow chow, German shepherd, Rottweiler and even the Yorkshire terrier have all been responsible for fatal attacks throughout the years, so it’s not a breed-specific problem.

Six US presidents have had bullies.
The executive pooch to Theodore Roosevelt was a bull terrier named Pete, but Pete wasn’t the only bully to garner good favor with a commander in chief. Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter have all called a bully breed their First Dog.

Nanny dogs
Bully breeds such as the Staffordshire bull terrier have a long history of being good with children and are often called “Nanny Dogs” in England thanks to their sweet and nurturing demeanor around kids. Bullies that are well-socialized and properly cared for are generally wonderful pets for children, as they are able to handle any rough-housing and are drawn to kids’ carefree dispositions.

can pit bulls even be heroes? yes, say many people who know and love them.

And the lesson learned from the supposedly most vicious dogs from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels have taught many is that even fighting dogs can become good canine citizens, therapy dogs and service dogs.
