Halloween Safety Tips For Pets

Pet costumes are cute. And Halloween can be spooky for dogs. Be sure that your dog is safe in the neighborhood when you head out with her on Halloween. Pets do not always enjoy the sights and sounds of Halloween. Here are a few precautions to take to keep them safe:

1. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag with your current contact information and that the microchip has up to date info, too.

2. Keep your pet on a leash. There may or may not be a lot of kids or teens where you live outside going trick or treating door to door. But be safe and control your pet with a leash. You never know when your dog might see a cat or decide s/he wants to chase or run off and scavenge or explore.

3. Make special Halloween treats for your pets. Give your dog a new bone, some doggie biscuits, dog jerky or dog cookies. But do not give candy to dogs or cats. Chocolate, nuts, raisins and candy with ingredients like xilothil and other “sugar-free” chemicals can be life threatening and even fatal for dogs.

4. When you are at home entertaining trick or treaters or having your own party, keep your pets in a safe place behind a closed door or gate. Otherwise, your pets might quickly get outside without a leash and get spooked, stolen or get into trouble.

5. Pets should stay indoors on Halloween night, especially black cats and even dogs that are outside. There is a high incidence of pets being stolen during the month of October, and you do not want your pets to become a statistic.

6. Have your own Halloween party for your pets and invite the neighborhood pawpals. Give out baskets of pet treats, play games and give our prizes for the best costumes !

BOO ! Share your plans for Halloween, the spookiest night of the year in the comments below and on our Facebook page, and be sure to send us your pet’s photo.

Doggone business Success

Doting pet owners keep pet businesses thriving

According to the American Pet Products Association, spending in the pet industry surged to a record $50.96 billion in 2011. The group expects spending on pets to continue rising to nearly $53 billion this year.

The animal-loving nature of the region, plus the wealthy clientele, has protected the multitude of businesses that cater to pet owners. Whether it’s pet fashion, diet, health or entertainment, there’s a glut of products and services.

Need a dog bowtie? They retail for $24 at pet boutique Diggidy Dog in Carmel. Perhaps you’d like to commission a portrait of your pet — watercolor or photograph? For pet baths, you’ll find $12.95 moisturizing massage goat milk soap bars among the line of Shampooch products made by Infusion Candles and Bath in Monterey.

In Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Marina and Seaside, there are also other pet businesses such as a gym for pets (Zoom Room), pet food and supplies such as chain stores Pet Food Express, Petco and Pet Smart and independently owned shops, pet sitters, doggie daycare providers, groomers, trainers and dog walkers.

In addition, there are numerous pet friendly hotels and inns, restaurants and businesses that welcome pets inside such as the Del Monte Shopping Center.

Have a bread bowl of clam chowder and calamari on Fisherman’s Wharf at Abalonetti or experience early Monterey Mission style ambiance at the Corkscrew Cafe where you and your dog can have a wood fire pizza on the garden patio…On your way out of town, stop at Tarpy’s Roadhouse and order a $27 Angus beef filet served with roasted red potatoes and garden veggies from the dog menu while you enjoy California-country cuisine yourself.

positive pit bull ads

the difference in pet advertising and pet policies is heating up on the pit bull front.  Some companies like 3M/Scotch are PIT BULL PROUD … and deserve KUDOS for displaying a cute pit bull dog in their display ads…

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pcslbf/5355660539/lightbox/

GOOD STUFF:  How about we thank a major corporation for throwing some much-needed pro-pittie advertising out there? Maybe call this the
“THANK YOU SCOTCH IT’S A PIT BULL!” campaign? 🙂 ~John

Maybe say something on the Scotch Facebook Page:

https://www.facebook.com/scotch?sk=wall

and also send it direct to the company via the Scotch lint roller:

Dog Time has created Mad Canines, if the characters on the Mad Men TV Show were dogs… one of the characters is portrayed as a pit bull/Viszla mix… hmmmm… what do you think?

http://dogtime.com/mad-men-dot-dot-dot-if-the-characters-were-dogs.html+

seriously?  and then there is a chain pet store that sells toxic pet treats from China and have banned bully breeds from their doggie daycare…

sheesh… name change… from Pet Smart to Pet Stupid…

Anna MacNeil’s study shows pit bulls’ natural habitat is the bed and breed-specific behavior is cuddling.

10 Ways to Save on Pet Care

According to a recent article in USA Today, Americans spent approximately $50.8 billion on their pets last year, up from $10.1 billion just four years earlier. That’s a lot of money for Max or Fluffy, but still nothing compared to the unconditional love they shell out for you every day.

As the proud owner of two Labrador-Australian Shepard mixes, I’m no stranger to the rising cost of pet care. In addition to frequent exercise and annual check-ups, my husband and I save hundreds of dollars on pet care by adopting the following savvy strategies.

1. Create an Emergency Fund
There are at least nine reasons for an emergency fund, according to Kiplinger, including the ability to offset a costly vet bill should your beloved animal need expensive treatment. When my dogs were just 12 months old, one choked the other during aggressive play and — $1,700 later — we had a very tired but recovering puppy. Our savings account kept this traumatic experience from creating a financial hardship.

2. Don’t Skimp on Food
Food is likely the most expensive necessity next to vet visits, but that doesn’t mean you should opt for low price over quality. By purchasing healthy food, you’re enhancing your pet’s quality of life and ultimately saving yourself from costly vet bills down the road. Purchase discount gift cards to PetSmart and other stores from sites like GiftCardGranny.com to nab some savings.

3. Consider Pet Insurance
If you’re the type of pet owner who will spare no expense for veterinary care, consider signing up for pet insurance. The number of pet insurance carriers has increased significantly from just ten years ago, and most offer several levels of coverage. Visit PetInsuranceComparison.org for information on available policies, reviews and questions to ask providers.

4. Take Advantage of Clinics
Some veterinary practices offer free clinics one or two times a year, waiving appointment fees that compound the cost of annual visits. My husband and I always schedule check-ups and vaccinations during these times. If your vet doesn’t offer this service, check with your local Humane Society or animal-control unit for recommendations.

5. Research Your Options
When facing a hefty vet bill, you might assume your only option is to throw down a credit card and pay off the expense over time. However, there are other sources for financial aid, including state programs and breed-specific organizations. Consult this article from the Humane Society for more information.

6. Buy Discount
I shop discount retailers like TJMaxx and Ross for clothes and housewares, and always peruse their pet-care aisles for deals. I’ve found great pet beds, bowls and toys for much less than pet-store prices, though I avoid treats and food items since I’m not familiar with the brands. Ultimately, new pet owners can score serious savings by stocking up on discount supplies.

7. Be Loyal
PetSmart and PetCo each have free loyalty programs that offer discounts and, in the case of PetCo, 5-percent cash back on purchases. You should also sign up to receive email notifications about upcoming sales and exclusive discounts, and stock up during these specials to tide you over until the next promotion.

8. Order Meds Online
Most pet owners know medications purchased directly from the vet come with a hefty price tag. Unless it’s an emergency, request the prescription information and shop online at sites like 1800PetMeds.com. I save 34 percent on our dogs’ heart worm medication by ordering online and using the generic alternative.

9. Fix for Less
Neutering or spaying your pet is crucial to avoiding the exponential expense of caring for a litter down the road. The average cost of the service from your local vet is between $200 and $300, but many organizations offer this service for less to curb the number of homeless animals. Consult ASPCA’s Low Cost Spay/Neuter Programs page to find a provider near you.

10. DIY
Though I wouldn’t attempt to clean a cat’s teeth, there are several services you can administer at home to save money. Brushing, ear cleaning and nail clipping are just a few necessities you can likely handle without the assistance of a professional. In fact, your vet will happily share with you the best techniques for at-home care, as they’d much prefer to spend time on more specialized services.

want to help to rescue a dog ?

There was the sweetest one year old lab mix black with a tiny white spot on his chest at the campground today… it’s owner left it tied up in the hot sun all day yesterday and today… I let Cici play with him this morning and really would love to take him with us … I reported it to the park and will see about finding him a good home… NO dog should be left outside in 95-100 degree weather !!!!    I left the owner a note, and splashed water all over him in the hopes of keeping him cool, too…

Cici goes with me wherever I go, Office Depot, Staples, banks, Lowe’s, and other stores allow pets so there is no reason to leave a dog tied up, especially not a puppy with a lot of energy that needs to play, run and companionship!

there was also a black feral kitten at the campground… so many animals to find good homes !!!

I found this photo at Free Will Astrology, great horoscopes, fun site…wouldn’t it be great to see people giving money/cash out to passersby on the freeway, rest areas, and supermarkets and shopping malls?  You’ve been blessed… Give to someone you love today and Pay it Forward !!!

the k9 handbook, part 2…

Stop and sniff everything you pass by, you never know what tantalizing smell you might miss if you don’t (stop and smell the roses but be careful of the thorns)…

When your human tells you to do something, take your time, mosey and look around, then when the mood strikes, highttail it over with tail at full wag (to give tail lash) and tongue at slobbery lick… this will ensure food, treats, and/or belly rubs…

When you are not supposed to do something, do it when your human leaves the room or the house, then pretend  innocence… (see first post about K9 handbook)

Do It Now… You never know when you might get another chance to eat her shoes, address book, eyeglasses, your cone, cardboard, books, towels, the garbage and strew paper, plastic, and create mayhem all over the house again.

If you’re wondering about that shadow or reflection in the mirror, just better bark and growl at it to play it safe. Could be another dog in the neighborhood.

Scoot your butt on the grass every chance you get.

Eat the grass and the bugs in the yard, yum. Tasty little critters.

Lick, slobber, chew, ignore and kick your human to keep them in line and show them who is boss of the house.

When you are done eating, look pathetic, maybe they will give you more food or treats. If in doubt, beg with sad eyes and stare intently at whatever they are eating.

Chase the cat, skunk, birds for fun.

Keep your human guessing… never let them know what you are really up to.

Eat poop, it’s good for you.

dog meets sheep, a goat, a cat, llamas, some cows, a skunk and chickens…

This summer, we were living on a farm in Genoa, Nevada. It’s a very small town and affluent. Very peaceful and quiet.  Part of the living arrangements, was to feed the animals on the weekends or whenever the owners went away. It was fun for me to lift that bale of hay and for my dog, she was often frustrated because I didn’t let her run about and play with the other animals. I did let her sniff the horse’s hooves as well as let her near the fence to commune with the cows and sheep. The horse looked like big whup, he liked the apples I gave him so he put up with the sniffing dog.

One time, I came outside the pool house and lo and behold, the horse was outside the fence. He saw me and ran back inside immediately. Funny horse. But he knew he was not supposed to be there. The sheep were not that aware of the rules. Or the sheep are not too bright. They decided to wander all around the property at a ieisurely pace. At one point, my dog and the sheep met up close and personal. She was thrilled. They seemed unaffected. The llamas almost bashed / kicked her head in. The chickens ran inside the hen house, and the skunk ducked under the house. The cows couldn’t have cared less, all they wanted was their hay, moooooooo.

Later, we were in Susanville, CA for a couple of days around the 4th of July. One morning, we went out for a walk and coming back, my dog spotted a goat. She decided to go play. I did not let her get near to the goat. The goat was tied up and looked like it could eat her for breakfast without a blink. She was very disappointed but survived the incident without a scar. Unlike the dog in the video below… it’s in German, but you get the drift…Moral of the story is some animals do not cohabitat well together.

Oh yes, I was hoping that I could get her a cat for a playmate. But when she found a stray cat hidden beneath the shelves at PetSmart, and she totally freaked out, that hope died and I fell on the floor, literally, holding onto my dog for dear life. The cat escaped and we lived to tell the tale.  Wonder what would happen if she met a bunny rabbit?  Oh that’s right, she did just the other day and she wanted to chase it. She loves to chase birds. Where we are living now, there are HUGE rabbits and quail…  When we go outside, I hold on tight for dear life. Tchuus or however you spell it… ok, the German video did not embed, so here’s a link to saving farm animals, some organizations are adopting farm animals, good and worthy cause and it’s in English…
