Peace and quiet only an hour away from LA

If you live in southern California, Los Angeles area, San Diego or Palm Springs, and have never been to Idyllwild, you must go.  It is as simple as that. This is a divine place. I went there before I had Cici, and I will return with her and it will be another amazing experience.  Getting back to the woods. We all suffer from nature deficient disorder living our busy lives in urban surroundings. It is time to kick back, take your shoes off and relish the silence.

This is what I wrote about being there…

I did not realize how much I missed the sounds of silence until I stayed one hour away from Palm Springs and Los Angeles in Idyllwild, California.  Idyllwild provides all of the ingredients for a romantic or creative interlude: privacy, scenic splendor, chocolate, good food and wine, and palpable peace and quiet.  A perfect place for a restful and rejuvenating retreat from city life, majestic trees, mountain scenery, fresh clean air, birds singing, squirrels playing, and stars at night. If you are an artist or writer, this is a fabulous place for a retreat.

Idyllwild is located in the San Jacinto mountains of Southern California, tucked away in the remote, southern portion of the San Bernardino National Forest above Palm Springs.  At 10,804 feet above sea level, Mt. San Jacinto is the second tallest mountain in Southern California.

Idyllwild is known for its breathtaking beauty. But it also hosts numerous cultural events (art galleries, music festivals, theatrical productions) as well as outdoor activities (horseback riding, rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, camping and mountain biking). In the summer, Idyllwild also offers respite from the summer heat. And a midweek stay is always good.

Unique one-of-a-kind gifts can be found in the numerous gift shops, perfect for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and other holiday shopping. You can also combine art viewing with shopping at Everitt’s Minerals & Gallery and Willow Creek Gallery.

Personally, I prefer the wild serenity and relaxation option of the spa experience.  Dining out at natural food cafes such as Natures Wisdom and Idyllwild Green are a nice home away from home treat.  Anna Bielecki is a fabulous hostess and makes amazing all natural chocolate treats.

If you and your sweetie are looking for a cozy, romantic setting for Valentine’s Day, your anniversary,  or just because, try the Restaurant Gastrognome or the Gnome as the locals call it. The ambiance is private and enjoyable, the food elegant and delicious and the service superb. Go for the specials such as lobster tacos. And the chocolate dessert cake rates a 10+ on the choco-delicious meter.

And if you want a romantic location for a wedding, why not consider getting married in Idyllwild. Rev. Richard Cadieux will be happy to conduct your ceremony. Plus, you can honeymoon at his Cedar Street Inn & Spa where romance reigns in an atmosphere of old world sophistication. The conference room is perfect for seminars. Vow renewal and small wedding ceremonies, who could ask for anything more?

Last time I spoke with Richard, a couple of months ago he told me that he is creating a wedding ministry, to go out and perform weddings because more and more brides want a wedding that is non-denominational, in an out of doors setting, done by a wedding official.  There will be 2.4 million weddings in 2008 and the average cost is $28K.

And Cedar Street Inn and Spa is a pet-friendly hotel and an award winning inn. Plus, Idyllwild’s finest massage therapists and esthetician practice their healing art at the Cedar Street Inn and Spa.

Two other don’t miss romantic hideaways are Strawberry Creek Inn and the Rainbow Inn. I stayed in the Bear Den room at the Rainbow Inn… comfy, with a lot of modern amenities and nice breakfast. Innkeepers Lon and John were not there at the time but the ambiance was wonderful.

The difference between a mediocre host and a par excellent one are the attention to the details. Ian and Rodney at the Strawberry Creek Inn offer guests a cozy all natural setting. I stayed in the Evergreen Room with a fireplace, and an eco-friendly coffee log to set on the fire. Plus, they treated me to delicious chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and some other cacao goodies.  I truly felt welcomed.

My dog’s a genius, I knew it…

This basic canine intelligence test was developed by researcher Stanley Coren, PhD, at the University of British Columbia. “Animals who keep trying until they succeed are brighter,” Coren says, “but the longer it takes, the less bright they are. Giving up is not a good sign.” With your dog watching, put a treat under a can; then see how long it takes for her to retrieve it. Less than 15 seconds is very good. Set up three cans, and place a treat under one while your pet watches. Remove him from the room for a couple minutes and then let him back in. Does he run straight to the cans? Does he find the right one? How many commands, hand signals, and noises does your pet respond to? More than 200 means you have a superpet.

not only did CC get the first and second treats right away, but I didn’t know that she had gotten the first one… duh… she was sooooo fast at retrieving and eating it up in a flash…  such a genius… she also continued looking for the treats afterwards and sniffing at the bowls, where did those treats go??? it’s like when she eats up a raw bone or rawhide bone and finishes it and looks around, wherever did that bone get to?  (in your tummy, silly)…

she knows a few commands but not 200 … so she’s not a superpet… oh well, but this morning, first thing upon arising, she looked for the raw bone that I had taken away from her last night, that she had been chewing on for a couple of hours, and now she is happily chewing it again… but the point is that she remembered the bone overnight… smarty pants.

Barking at her own reflection… don’t worry, be happy

My friends had suggested that I take my dog on virtual walks, through a guided visualization, where she can run and play on the beach, as well as (I added this) play with other dogs. I also gave her a divine physical therapist, healer, trainer, and it was a lot of fun. Afterwards, believe it or not, her leg was stronger, she stopped hopping, and she even tried to climb this hill, which she has not done before. Some people may not think this means anything or think it’s coincidence, ok, that’s fine. For others, you know this works so I thought that I’d mention it. I will continue doing this.

My dog is bored and wants to run and play more than she can at this point, so part of doing this, is to help her dissipate some of the energy she has excessive amounts of, which leads to chewing up everything in sight and / or sticking her head under the bed and whining or growling or barking at me.

Speaking of barking, so funny, she saw her own reflection in the door to the laundry room and was barking at herself, thinking it was another dog, so i opened up the door so she could see that there was no dog in there… she sniffed around, looked confused, and looked at me, like what happened, where did the dog go? funny girl…

We did some training, stay and come and she did ok, but a few times, she just decided to mosy over, took her time, or she came before I told her to come… so this needs some work, she is still young…

dog training course

Countown to my birthday/Thanksgiving… got a huge turkey… so far no one to share it with… my friends are in Vegas or California or on the east coast, some in other countries, too. Dead relatives and the ones who are alive, never mind. I used to dread the holidays because it meant spending time with the family, now I’ve got no family to spend them with. Sad.

I would love to be at the beach, in Carmel, Monterey, Maui, Hawaii, any of the islands, in the Bay area, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Pacific Grove, for my birthday… have a reservation, but don’t know yet how that could happen due to circumstances. Being stuck in northern Nevada is ok. It’s quiet and peaceful here at least. Could be worse. Count my blessings.

Praying for a new car/SUV, silver one, good on gas mileage, a Hybrid, or efficient, low mileage used one, as well as my own home near the beach. I used to live in Bodega Bay at the beach. It was cold in winter but I loved it there, listening to the surf / waves at night, the deer would come to the lawn, there were rainbows. The stars. Sigh.

There are a lot of stars here at night, and weird animal sounds. Rumors of wild bears, coyotes, and horses.
