Victory dogs film: The Champions

If the names Cherry Garcia, Handsome Dan, Little Red, Ginger Girl, Lucas, Georgia, Mel, Ray, Hector (the Inspector), Jhumpa Jones, Audie, Frodo, Leo, Red, Stella, and others (52) are familiar to you, then you know who we are talking about when we discuss the Victory dogs (the formerly abused dogs of Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels) who are now either in loving homes or remain at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah (22 of the most traumatized dogs went to Best Friends originally). Ten of the most adoptable dogs were taken care of, socialized, and trained by Donna and Tim of BadRap in Oakland, CA who helped to find them great loving homes. Some have become therapy dogs. Others are just plain happy in homes with kids, other dogs and cats. And some have passed on (Hector, Leo, Red, Lucas, Georgia and others).

Now their story is being told in “The Champions,” a new documentary created by Darcy Dennett, which just made its world premier over the weekend at the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF), which for the first time ever featured a “Compassion, Justice & Animal Rights” program for filmmakers who want to share stories that will change the world and, hopefully, our relationship with animals for the better.

From the film’s synopsis:

The documentary The Champions, follows five of the dogs, from the time they are first rescued through their adoption. It is not just about the dogs themselves, but how they change and inspire the people who come into their lives.  It also follows-up with six dogs who remain at Best Friends to this day, some of them for life.  Thanks to the work of Best Friends and BADRAP, dozens of the dogs who would have summarily been killed were given a second chance to prove that even fighting dogs rescued from the most extreme circumstances can be successfully rehabilitated with love, time, and patience.  That in fact, what many of these dogs need to thrive isn’t rehabilitation at all, but time to recover.

Today, a majority of the dogs have successfully been placed into loving, adoptive homes.  Their story proves that even creatures who have suffered the most unimaginable abuse have amazing strength, spirit, and resilience. It is a story of the bonds of trust and love we have with animals and their importance in our lives, a relationship that has the potential to bring out the best in the human and animal spirit.

The film also touches on something that continues to hurt pit bulls and their families in general: breed discrimination. Hopefully it will help continue to dispel the myths that surround these dogs and open the hearts and minds of more people who will stop fearing and targeting them based on stereotypes.

The film trailer has premiered and is on the web site. Check it out!

The Champions

The Champions, which won the annual Zelda Penzel “Giving Voice to the Voiceless Award” at HIFF this year, will be screening at select locations throughout the U.S. over the coming weeks. For more info, check out The Champions.

The problem with Time Magazine

The problem with Time Magazine and Charlotte Alter

http://time.com/2891180/kfc-and-the-pit-bull-attack-of-a-little-girl/

l. if you know ANYTHING about dogs and specifically about the history of American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and the other dog BREEDS lumped together and called “pit bulls,” you know that these dogs were bred to be SUPER/EXTRA people friendly so that the handlers would be able to work with them. ALL people aggression was bred OUT of these dogs.  So the first paragraph in this article begins with a lie AKA a MYTH not a FACT.  Apparently, the writer of this article had NO TIME to do any REAL Research nor to interview REAL DOG experts such as James Crosby and Victoria Stilwell.

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.27.53 AM

Pit Bulls are not an aggressive breed of dog.

*According to the American Temperament Testing Association, APBTs have an 85.3% passing rate, compared to a passing rate of 81.9% for all breeds on average.

http://canineaggression.blogspot.com/

This is FANTASTIC, point by point, she tells it like it IS…

http://www.swaylove.org/the-many-problems-with-charlotte-alters-time-article-about-pit-bulls

2. Then this article goes on to quote DISCREDITED time and time and time again pit bull haters and fantasy dwellers such as Colleen Lynn, Merritt Clifton and PETA.  Yes, scratch the surface of these three together and you get nonsensical stats based upon media overreporting of so-called pit bull attacks (if it looks like a dog, call it a pit bull and there you have a headline and ridiculous stats to use to ban pit bulls), fear/paranoia and a call to KILL all the dogs (disguised as more logical sounding breed discrimination aka breed specific euthanization)… of course, they leave OUT that in places like Denver, CO where BSL has been implemented, dog bites have GONE UP because the REAL PROBLEM has NOT been dealt with. Breed is NEVER the problem. Ignorance about Dogs IS the problem.

Oh by the way, PETA kills healthy adoptable dogs and cats and has for years. And their founder, Ingrid Newkirk, was killing animals at a shelter, a job she relished. PETA thinks killing companion animals is a gift to them.

3. oh yes, and speaking about the Michael Vick dogs. 51 dogs who are doing JUST FINE. Eight became therapy dogs, and many are living in homes with children, cats, other dogs, in FAMILIES and shown NO signs of aggression. Not ONE.  These dogs were tortured, traumatized, terrified of humans, unsocialized, kept chained up 24/7 and made to fight tor their LIVES. Yet, once taken away from Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels and given tons of TLC and taught how to be dogs at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, BADRAP, the Monterey SPCA and other places, they’ve thrived.

4. Here is the REAL SCOOP on what causes DOG BITES and ATTACKS according to REAL DOG experts.

http://www.pasadenanow.com/main/opinion-everyone-in-the-community-is-concerned-about-agressive-dogs-and-stopping-dog-bites

Instead of blaming the dogs, how about holding PEOPLE accountable. People are the ones responsible for the abuse, torture, neglect and abandonment of dogs. Humans are the violent ones. Toxic macho masculinity culture teaches young men that they must be TOUGH and FIGHT, MAIM and KILL animals and other creatures. All of the serial killers have a history of hurting and killing animals then move on to human beings.

A few stats:

Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more than 800 times more likely to be killed by their caretaker than by a Pit Bull.

From 2001 through 2012, 6,410 women were murdered in the United States by an intimate partner using a gun—more than the total number of U.S. troops killed in action during the entirety of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

…Women in the United States are 11 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than are women in other high income countries… http://americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/report/2014/06/18/91998/women-under-the-gun/

RIP sweet Lucas

An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that who ever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each other’s hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: “UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”

‘UBUNTU’ in the Xhosa culture means: “I am because we are”

***

The Vicktory dogs family, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Badrap, Our Pack exemplify this kind of attitude towards the dogs and people… imagine the world we live in today especially in America being this way… a dream… a hope… a wish…this is how life is… when we ALL thrive…life is at it should be…

Sweet Lucas was one of the dogs who was court ordered to stay at Best Friends for life and so he did not experience having a family home of his own… but from all reports, he was MUCH LOVED by all the caregivers he had…visitors to Best Friends, all who met and knew him… all the people who’s lives he touched…

From Best Friends:

We’re deeply saddened to announce that our dear Lucas crossed over the Rainbow Bridge earlier this evening, ending his suffering from a host of health complications. We knew those of you who love him most would want to know. Please keep Lucas and those closest to him in your thoughts. We’ll have more details to share later.

Lucas wore the Michael Vick dog fighting scars of his past on his face, but his heart and soul exuded nothing but happiness, excitement, love, and forgiveness up to the end. -jessie

In Memory of Lucas

“Garcia doesn’t seem to mind the interruption, and we’re ushered through the door. The first dog we see is a large, dirty blond Pit Bull with a huge head and knowing, resigned eyes. His face, torso, and legs bear the unmistakable scars of fierce battle. Clearly, this dog hasn’t been in just a scrape or two, he’s had to fight for his life. Yet, as we step closer, his whole body wiggles and wags.

“This is Lucas,” says Garcia. “He’s a grand champion. He’s probably been fought more than 25 times.”

Lucas nuzzles his head into the crook of my elbow. He darts over to greet my husband, all kisses and play bows. It’s hard to imagine a dog being any friendlier, and we fall all over him in return. He’s irresistible.”

“To Judah Battista, Lucas is Exhibit A in the argument that all dogs are good dogs if they’re treated well.”

“Of all the pit bulls in Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels, Lucas was the baddest of them all — Mike Tyson, Hulk Hogan and a little Ray Lewis rolled into one, the grand champion, the most vicious of the vicious Vick dogs.

“When his dog-fighting operation was busted, Vick was sent to prison and so, in a sense, was Lucas. The court shipped him and 21 of his fighting mates from Virginia to this sprawling, 3,800-acre animal sanctuary outside Kanab, with the stipulation that Lucas spend the rest of his days here. It was your basic life sentence.

“That was in January 2008.

“Nearly four years later, or 28 by his reckoning, Lucas is running the place.

“Open the door to the executive offices, and there he is, a smile on his face, a lick on his lips, and eager anticipation of either a pet or a treat written all over his eyes.

“Only the fading scars on his neck and face suggest that he was once the toughest, scariest and most-abused dog in Virginia.

“…we knew that meanness wasn’t the summary of their nature,” he continues. “Using stereotypes doesn’t help anyone. They can all be rehabilitated. It just takes time and affection and attention.

“What we needed to prove was that man could be dog’s best friend as much as dogs could be man’s best friend.”

“After that speech, Judah gave Lucas a treat.

“And Lucas? He jumped in Judah’s lap and gobbled it down.”

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700201165/Michael-Vicks-meanest-dog-doing-great-in-Kanab.html?pg=all

“When some visitors come
into the office and sit down,
he welcomes them by
jumping onto their laps and
lavishing kisses on them,”
Brenda says. “That tells
me that he’s not the menacing,
dangerous dog that far too
many people feel his breed
might be. He only wants to
be loved. We all are better
people for having had the
experience of having him in our lives.”

“For Dr. Patti, his easy nature is also what has
touched her: “The thing that stands out most
to me about Lucas is his overflowing love of
people. He is so kind and gentle despite what
humans in the past have put him through. It
really teaches a lesson in forgiveness and
understanding that we humans should strive to equal.”

“Michelle agrees: “We can learn a lot from him.
He has been a very happy dog despite his
background and despite all of the ups and
downs he has had medically.”

“…The gentle side of Lucas, despite his past, continues
to inspire those who know and love him. “His joy
for life and a can-do attitude are something we
can all strive for,” says John. “Lucas really
does symbolize the American dog Despite a
very difficult past, he is affectionate and forgiving.
We are all pulling for him to get better.”

May ALL dogs experience the love, understanding, a home of their own, lots of food and treats and belly rubs that Lucas did… may he run free over the Rainbow Bridge… RIP …

Pit bull fallacies refuted

Strolling through the Internet last night, actually did a Google search on my name, and I found this gem… Someone wrote about me and “pit bulls” regarding a letter/comment I posted last year in a Vail, Colorado newspaper. Apparently, the person who wrote this did NOT do her research so I am here to refute her statements that she has confused with facts.  Just to be clear, when someone says something and even quotes others, does not make the statements fact. A fact is a credible statement backed up by research.

for more info about pit bull myths, go here…

http://celiasue.com/2012/07/27/pit-bull-myths/

Here is the original article in the Vail paper

http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20111204/EDITS/111209954

here is my response to that article

http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20111206/LETTER/111209906

and below is a letter after what I wrote…

Before I begin, this study is pertinent…

Three MOST aggressive breeds

The number one aggressive breed out of the 33 dogs surveyed? The Dachshund. Yes – the wiener dog. The study found that “one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 have snapped at their owners.”

“Number two on the list is an even more diminutive breed – the Chihuahua, while Jack Russells came in third.

“The researchers say that the bite statistics that have been released in recent years are skewed because most dog bites are not reported. Big dog bites are more likely to require medical attention, but this does not mean that those breeds are doing the majority of the biting.”

http://www.dogguide.net/blog/2008/07/the-3-most-aggressive-dog-breeds-revealed-pit-bulls-rottweilers-youll-be-surprised/

What she says is highlighted by underlining… my comments are generally below her statements.

Dogged agenda

Who is Celia Sue Hecht? Do you know her? Is she your neighbor? I doubt it.

She does not live in Eagle County or even Colorado. She lives in California.

She is a writer and pit bull apologist who trolls the Internet looking for articles, such as the commentary from the Sunday, Dec. 4 Vail Daily by Melanie Pfeiffer about pit bulls.

I do not apologize for pit bulls nor do I troll the Internet looking for articles. At times, people post articles to my Facebook page and if and when I HAVE TIME and ENERGY to respond to inaccuracies, I do so. And if I were a troll, apparently am not a very good one since it is now five months later. If I were trolling I would have come across her response months ago.

I am not disputing that Hecht has a right to her opinion. Furthermore, I think that the Vail Daily does have an obligation to present both sides to a story. But I do think it is pertinent to note that she is not a member of our community and that she is not unbiased.

Clearly she is a member of the community and is biased based on what she says…

She writes authoritatively in the Vail Daily that, “pit bull is not a breed: American Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terrier and other breeds are all lumped together and called pit bulls.”

Yet on her own website she writes that her own dog is a Dalmatian and pit bull mix — lumping together her own pet.

Ridiculous… for the sake of brevity on my blog I do not have a long dialogue about how I have not done a DNA test on my dog to determine whether she has American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, bulldog, mastiff, or any of the other 30 breeds routinely lumped together and labeled pit bull dogs in her… so I say she is a Dalmatian/pit bull mix …

Many dog breeds “can” fall under the blanket “pit bull” category.

These include:

•Alano Espanol
•American Pit Bull Terrier
•American Staffordshire Terrier
•Cane Corso
•Cordoba Fighting Dog
•Dogue de Bordeaux
•Japanese Tosa
•Perro de Presa Canario
•Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I challenge Ms. Edwards  to Find the Pit

http://www.pickthepit.com/

and I would ask Ms. Edwards 1. how many “pit bulls” she has personally met up close and personal and 2. how many millions of INNOCENT dogs killed would make her feel safe?  as it is, millions of INNOCENT “pit bull” type dogs are slaughtered every year in shelters across the country just because of discrimination against these dogs, stereotypes, ignorance and profiling.

Did you know that the MOST DECORATED dog in military history was a “pit bull” type dog Sergeant Stubby?

http://willmydoghateme.com/pet-cetera/the-dogs-of-war-sergeant-stubby

and remember, Petey the Little Rascals dog… guess what his breed was?

The substance of her commentary was a Christmas-letter catch-up on how Michael Vick’s dogs are doing.

absurd… the former V dogs are exemplary examples of how “pit bulls” actually are… these DOGS who were abused and traumatized and made to fight for their lives, to some people, are considered to be the meanest, most vicious “pit bull” type dogs and what I pointed out is that “pit bulls” are NOT inherently mean nor vicious by virtue of the FACT that eight of the former V dogs have become therapy dogs and many are living with other dogs, cats and children as family pets.

That they have not have killed another dog or child somehow is proof that we all have it wrong when it comes to pit bulls.

there are no incidents to date of a spayed/neutered indoor family pit bull EVER having killed anyone.

…[S]ince 1975, dogs belonging to more than 30 breeds have been responsible for fatal attacks on people, including Dachshunds, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a Labrador Retriever.” (It’s also key to point out that you are more likely to be killed by lightening than a dog, and dog bites are at historic lows.)

http://stubbydog.org/2012/05/pit-bulls-by-the-numbers/

Yes, Ms. Hecht is entitled to her opinions, but that does not mean that they have any merit, as she lacks any credentials giving her one iota of credibility.

She is a dog owner. I mean, pit bull owner.

My credentials:

30 years as a Journalist who knows how and DOES research

5-1/2 years as a dog owner makes me an expert… when I first rescued my dog I was told she was a Dalmatian mix… I knew NOTHING about “pit bulls.”   After many people asked me if she was a “pit bull” I spent HOURS doing research. And found that my dog does indeed have numerous characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier… blocky head, extremely friendly towards people and children, silly and goofy personality, slobberpuss and more.

Observing my dog’s 1,000+ interactions with more than 600 dogs of all breeds (including her play with our neighbor’s dogs, Australian Shepherds, chi mix and mini poodle next door, Siberian Husky and her new doggie pal Harley, a 10 pound Havanese) and farms animals including cows, horses, chickens, sheep, llamas and even Himalayan yaks and elk, and seeing her response to six attacks from other dogs mostly at dog parks (she generally goes into submission, showing off her belly), PLUS intimately living with this dog day and night, sleeping with her, playing with her, putting my fingers in her mouth, watching her with other people, I have NOT seen any signs of aggression… not when a dog had her by the throat, another dog made her eye bleed, and another dog chewed a piece out of her head. On another occasion, for four days, a dog growled and snapped at her continuously and she IGNORED the other dog’s aggression preferring to play with the other dog on the property. One dog trainer told me that she wished HER dog acted so gently and cautiously when meeting a new doggie friend.

So what exactly are YOUR credentials, Ms Edwards, besides living in Vail, being a mother and cat owner?  You don’t say. Hysteria is not a credential, nor is relying on FAULTY  “facts” and fake science that have been disproved time and time again by EXPERTS.

and you also deny 150 years of HISTORY

http://www.ywgrossman.com/photoblog/?p=1103

One dog breed achieved such a rock solid reputation with children that for 150 years it was known as America’s “Nanny Dog”.

temperament testing reveals that pit bulls score gentler than 121 other breeds

Temperament evaluations by the American Temperament Test Society have given pit bull terriers a very high passing rate of 90.6 percent. The average passing rate for the other 121 breeds of dogs in the tests was only a low 77 percent.

The American Temperament Test Society determined that pit bulls were less aggressive in confrontational situations than many stereotypically friendly breeds, scoring 86% in overall ability to interact appropriately in public — versus the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (83%), the Miniature Poodle (78%) and the Old English Sheepdog (77%).

Beyond a dog’s breed, factors that affect a dog’s tendency toward aggression include reproductive status, sex, early experience and socialization/training. According to the Centers for Disease Control, these concerns are well-founded, given that:

  • More than 70 percent of all dog bite cases involve unneutered male dogs.
  • An unneutered male dog is 2.6 times more likely to bite than is a neutered dog.
  • A chained or tethered dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than a dog not chained or tethered.
  • 97 percent of dogs involved in fatal attacks on people in 2006 (the most recent year statistics are available) were not spayed/neutered.

What does the science say? (NOTE:  THIS IS NOT NOT NOT SCIENCE)

“The pit bull’s massive canine jaws can crush a victim with up to 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch — three times that of a German shepherd or Doberman pinscher” (dogbitelaw.com). “The pit bull is quicker to anger than most dogs. … Pit bulls are frighteningly tenacious; their attacks frequently last for 15 minutes or longer, and nothing — hoses, violent blows or kicks — can easily stop them. That’s because of the third behavioral anomaly: the breed’s remarkable insensitivity to pain” (www.city-journal.org).

Dr. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia wrote:

“The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of “locking mechanism” unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier.”

A German Shepherd Dog, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument to measure bite pressure. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested. (Source: Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic)

What does an animal behavior expert say? Temple Grandin (from Colorado), writing in her book “Animals in Translation,” notes, “On average, rottweiler’s and pit bulls are so much more aggressive than other breeds that it’s extremely unlikely bad owners alone could account for the higher rate of biting. … Aggression isn’t always the owner’s fault. … Don’t let people tell you that rottweiler or pit bull aggression is a myth. It’s not.”

What do the Centers for Disease Control say? “At least 25 breeds of dogs have been involved in 238 human dog-bite-related fatalities during the past 20 years. Pit bull-type dogs and rottweilers were involved in more than half of these deaths.”

Lisa Peterson, spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club, the AKC is opposed to BSL, which Peterson compares to racial profiling. She says, “When there is an incident in a local area, the reaction is to create a dangerous dog law, and sometimes lawmakers react with breed bans because that breed of dog that was involved in an incident. A law that targets a breed because a single dog was involved in an incident is not a good law.”

a study by the University of Colorado School of Medicine conducted between 2003 and 2008 determined that unsupervised children ages five and younger are at the greatest risk for dog bites, and that family pets, including a high percentage of breeds considered “good” with children such as Labrador retrievers, are the most frequent offenders.

“My kids are around pit bulls every day. In the ’70s they blamed Dobermans, in the ’80s they blamed German shepherds, in the ’90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull.”    Cesar Millan.  “Pit bulls get a bad rap because of irresponsible owners….”

Victoria Stilwell, dog trainer, It’s Me or the Dog

“It’s a Witch Hunt”

Victoria Stilwell on Breed Specific Legislation, “I am a mother. I am also a dog owner and dog trainer who has committed my life to helping people find the most effective, humane and responsible way to live in harmony with their dogs while also affording them the respect they deserve.

…The general concept underpinning BSL is that the most effective way to determine whether or not a certain dog could potentially pose a threat to humans is by classifying and generalizing entire breeds of dogs as ‘dangerous’, regardless of the individual dog’s temperament, behavioral history or owner’s actions.

It continues to confound me that there are still proponents of BSL given both the behavioral science which is now available and the abysmal track record of municipalities that have attempted to curb dog attacks by instituting BSL. We know so much more than we did even 20 years ago about how dogs think, what they feel, how their brains are wired (very similarly to ours, as it turns out), and what could potentially cause them to aggress. Ironically, one of the most commonly found attributes among aggressive dogs is not their breed, but rather a lack of confidence and insecurity. Think of the typical schoolyard bully – is he generally a self-confident kid or one who actually suffers from significant insecurity issues? The same general concept can be applied to dogs.

“Regardless, counties, cities and entire countries around the world continue to turn to BSL policies in a desperate attempt to protect their public from the rising number of serious (and sometimes fatal) dog bites. I share this desire to reduce the number of dog attacks. As a doting mother of a beautiful 7 year old girl, my heart literally breaks every time I hear about another child who has been mauled by the family dog, which is why I have set up a Dog Bite Prevention Task Force to help educate the public about responsible dog handling and safety. The vast majority of fatal dog attacks share one glaring yet often-overlooked characteristic: usually at least one component of the scene is not in its usual environment. Either the dog is staying with the uncle, the grandparents are babysitting for the child, or someone outside their normal circumstance is placed as the primary guardian. The key to avoiding these tragedies is not to make owning certain breeds illegal, but rather to ensure that everyone in charge of dogs and/or children is educated about safe practices and never leaves any dog alone with any child.

“Pit bulls can make great family pets in the hands of a responsible owner

Simply put, any breed of dog can bite, and any breed of dog can make a perfect family pet. Yes, the bigger and stronger the dog, the more damage it is capable of inflicting, although I have seen horrific footage of bite wounds from small dogs such as Jack Russell Terriers and Chihuahuas as well. Which breed of dog was named ‘most aggressive’ in recent scientific studies?  The family Dachshund.

“…Statistics have shown that throughout the world, wherever BSL has been initiated, the number of dog bites has actually increased since the legislation has passed. This is the case in Scotland, England, parts of Canada, certain cities in the US, the Netherlands and beyond. In every single case, dog bites have become more of a problem since governments began banning breeds. What more evidence do we need as a society to realize that BSL is ultimately ineffective, if not also unfair?”

http://positively.com/2011/04/06/why-bsl-doesnt-work/

Those breeds do not, however, make up half the dogs owned in America.

Ms. Pfeiffer writes, “I can honestly say that in three out of four cases (dog fights), an American pit bull terrier is involved.”

So what’s my agenda? I live in this community, Arrowhead. I have small children. And I’m, ahem, a cat owner.

Howl for Lennox and Patrick

Please keep Patrick and Lennox and everyone involved in your thoughts and prayers.

AHS is still trying to get their greedy hands on Patrick but Capt. is on the case, yay Capt!

Re: the petition that was filed last Friday by AHS.

~as posted on NJ SPCA: “To All: Had an opportunity yesterday to review the “petition” for custody of Patrick that was filed this week by AHS in Essex County Court. To say it was flawed would be a major understatement. I will be asking the NJSPCA Board of Trustees for approval to file a Petition for custody of Patrick so that we can immediately, upon approval, let the Scavelli’s adopt Patrick. AHS’s petition needs to be stopped now, Patrick is home and should stay where he is, loved and happy. Just sayin…..  Captain Yocum

Patrick’s abuser Kisha Curtis appeared in Superior Court in Newark today — visibly pregnant — where she pleaded not guilty to the indictment. Her public defender, Andrew Rojas, will seek to dismiss the charges, and has filed a motion alleging his client’s Miranda rights were violated when she gave her statement to police.

Curtis has so far rejected the state’s plea offer calling for up to 18 months in prison, a $5,000 fine, 30 days community service and termination of animal custody rights.

Superior Court Judge Joseph Cassini III, who is handling the criminal case and custody matter, set a court date for March 19.

Confident and prepared as we move forward in this amazing journey. I have become a better person because of Patrick and his unbelievable will to not only live but thrive. Patrick is living a dream right now and is one amazing dog (soul)…………….Thank you all. Be back on Saturday………Captain Yocum, NJSPCA

Please sign and share!! The international demand to get Lennox released by public appeal has entered a new phase with a call for boycotting the ceremony of the Olympic Torch scheduled to be carried through Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the dog has been held captive for death row for more than 600 days.
The petition, which is titled Free Lennox – No Olympic Torch for Belfast, says that Lennox has committed no crime but has been incarcerated only because of his physical appearance and what he “might” do.

Things look dim for Lennox according to this article.

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/northern-ireland/end-of-line-for-death-row-dog-lennox-16105683.html

but not true according to Lennox’ family…

Just a quick update for everybody, as of yet there is No official word on Lennox we have heard nothing from the courts regarding a date from the Judge of an official decision. Many supporters may have read an article written by Amanda Poole stating that the 20th of Jan is the last date for a decision to be given legally, if this is right then i can only state it has not been confirmed to us. When we have an official update we can assure you that we will make it public. Thank you for the continued support that you all give to Lennox, please keep spreading the story of Lennox and share the petition wherever you can. www.savelennoxpetition.co.uk

Media Circus Shows True Colors

Update:   I did finally hear from Jason several times. I think his heart is in the right place, especially after seeing the video from NBC that did not air. Either the abusers are paying people off or NYC is just plain corrupt. Corruption all over Gotham City, news NOT at 11 p.m.  Something is fishy in NYC. Apparently Coffee is still with her abusers/owners even though one of the co-founders of Best Friends told me that the ASPCA have the authority to go in and take the dog away. So that means that either the abuser is paying them off, they are NOT doing their job or ???? Jason thinks she is safe because he thinks that the owners won’t do anything to their meal ticket.  I hope they are right.  And I PRAY that Coffee is rescued soon and has a NEW HOME where she can get ALL OF THE LOVE  and CARE SHE DESERVES…

I still think that Coffee should have been rescued FIRST… and Jason means well but is naive and/or listening to the wrong people. Experts smexperts…

The NBC TV news segment that did air is ridiculous. They interviewed someone related to the abusers who kept evading and looking down PLUS SHE IS RELATED TO THEM. And that dog is NOT the same dog. They did not air the interview with Jason due to technical difficulties which is just B.S.  See for yourself, compare the video of the dog Coffee on the show on NBC and the dog shown on the show where they won $2000. NOT THE SAME DOG.

God please keep Coffee SAFE and ALIVE…

I don’t care if the whole world thinks that I am crazy or wrong or out of line or a B I T C H (as Tabatha Coffey said on The Talk (don’t remember her words, these are MINE)…

Brave/Beautiful

Intelligent

Talented

Creative/Courageous

Honest

i spoke with someone recently who with the Courage of their Convictions, got arrested for helping to rescue a dog who was being abused… Wise or Foolish???  You decide… but I admire people who ACT on what they Believe, WALK THEIR TALK, they are RARE… most people like to run their mouths and when push comes to shove, show their lack of courage and conviction… long on Excuses why they can’t DO anything.

I’ll be the first one to be HAPPY and RELIEVED to know that I was wrong… but I do KNOW the POWER of the MEDIA and it seems that the GLARE of the SPOTLIGHT has DAZZZZZZLED some people’s Brains and FOOLED them into egotistical thinking instead of WHAT IS BEST FOR THE ANIMAL which SHOULD BE the FIRST NUMBER ONE Priority.

Why should these dogs Have to Pay ANYMORE for the Price of their Fame that they DID NOT ask for????

I am here to poke MY LIGHT into the deep dark crevices of People’s TRUE Heart’s Intentions (not what they say but what they DO)…It is amazing what self-proclaimed animal lovers DO when push comes to shove. Ugh.

First case in point, is about Patrick the Miracle Dog, who’s celebrity fame and status has put him in the midst of a custody battle… On June 2, a judge will decide his fate… and I for one am very concerned about the outcome. I know that other people are, too… But how many are questioning the role of the media and Facebook in this??? Well, that is what I am here to point out that perhaps if Patrick was not plastered all over Facebook and the media, his custody would not be an issue. I also know that Patrick’s story has woken up a lot of people around the world and spurred people on to do GOOD…

All I am suggesting is that Patrick’s Fame has been a double edged sword leading to trolls, scammers and other abusers of animals to crawl out of the woodwork clamoring for a piece of the Patrick fame pie as well as awakening GOOD people who have done amazing things like donating to their local shelters, getting animals adopted and working to change animal abuse awareness and laws.

Now the second case that had me sick and crying all night… Coffee… As I said, I do hope and pray that I am wrong about this, but I kept warning before the media circus erupted that Coffee, the Abused Dog at Met’s Games in NYC that Coffee should have been taken OUT OF HARM’S WAY first before any media spotlight was shone upon her abuse.  In my humble opinion.

Alas, I was NOT listened to and Coffee was NOT at the Yankees game on Sunday, according to the Wall Street Journal, so am worried about the story of her abuse plastered all over the Internet and Media that the low lives who have been abusing her, what will they do? how will they react? Is COFFEE IS NOW IN POTENTIALLY A MORE HARMFUL SITUATION THAN SHE HAS BEEN IN???  Or have the abusers just paid off the ASPCA and not worried about a thing. Business as usual.

Do we know what these low lives will do? Well, we have some clues… they have been willing to dress her up, put a shock collar on her, taken all of her teeth out of her mouth and made her sit in the hot sun, rain and all kinds of weather for HOURS a day WITHOUT food, water or being able to BREATHE OR MOVE for FOUR YEARS, making money off of their abuse of her… terrifying her… zapping her every time she dared to move…MAKING MONEY OFF OF HER…

what makes us think that once CAUGHT IN THE ACT IN PUBLIC that they are suddenly going to become paragons of decency and morality and DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE DOG????

WHERE IS COFFEE and WHEN WILL WE FIND OUT IF SHE IS OK or NOT?????

That is the sickening Question…

GET THE DOG OUT OF HARM’S WAY AND INTO SAFETY FIRST, MEDIA CIRCUS SECOND MAYBE…

I do NOT give a rat’s behind about doing things the RIGHT way (whatever that is), or about authorities or rescue groups. All I want to know and All I keep asking, IS Coffee Safe and OUT of Harm’s Way Now, Today???  Jason seems to think Yes.

Does the Cheese Stand ALONE, What do YOU Think????

And if anyone KNOWS WITHOUT A DOUBT that Coffee is SAFE AND UNHARMED, PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP… Thank you.

my hope for Coffee:

people have told me to hope for the best… well, ok, but HOPE has to be based on something not just on THIN AIR… or because people do not want to think about it or question anything or are in DENIAL of the TRUTH…

Look at how many people walked by Patrick on that railing and DID NOT CARE ENOUGH TO DO ANYTHING and how many MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WALKED BY COFFEE FOR FOUR YEARS…

so am I now to HOPE that ANYBODY gave a hoot enough to rescue Coffee before the Media Blitz????

I am an optimistic realist not a PIE IN THE SKY believer … Can Fairy Tales Come True??? Absolutely… Do I believe in Miracles??? YES… AND I also know the dark side of human nature from Mother Theresa who said that She Saw the HITLER WITHIN herself and decided to then GO FORTH AND DO GOOD… (am paraphrasing)…

How MANY people do YOU know willing to SEE THE HITLER WITHIN THEMSELVES LIKE MOTHER THERESA????  Yeah, not too many…

Better to point the finger OUT THERE…

I am the first one willing to admit / confess that I DO NOT DO well with Uncertainty… and that yes, I DO MAKE MISTAKES… some horrendous ones… but if there is one thing I learned from my BIGGEST MISTAKE   (my marriage) is that HAVING YOUR HEAD UP YOUR A–HOLE MAY NOT BE THE BEST VIEW/PERSPECTIVE… I was in Fantasy, Delusion, Illusion and wishin/hopin and REFUSED to see what was right in front of my EYES… My friends told me but NOPE I wanted to Believe what I wanted to Believe and I WAS WRONG… DEAD WRONG… and I HAVE PAID AND PAID AND PAID AND PAID AND PAID the Price for being so naive and foolish and just plain stupid…

As I once said in a poem Marriage on the Rocks,

But soon I learned
you just can’t win
An argument
With a mountain.,,

http://www.poetrygalore.com/poems/love/an_ode_marriage.htm

I was trying to PREVENT A DISASTER with Coffee that I could see brewing… and I still HOPE that I am WRONG and that it is not a disaster AND the ONLY REAL HOPE I have is based upon My Belief in the Divine… who hopefully has ANGELS surrounding Coffee as I speak… protecting that poor abused fur baby…

or else there is a Higher Purpose/Good for this Disaster…

Jason, thank you for bringing this to light and again, I HOPE and PRAY you can get Coffee to safety.

life’s not fair…

a lady on the beach told me today that it was not fair when cici approached her joyfully without asking permission…

i say it’s not fair that cici cannot run and play on the beach
like other puppy dogs because she is pre-judged because of her breed

it’s not fair that ignorant humans hurt dogs like cici
and dogs like cici are blamed for being abused by people like Michael Vick

it’s not fair that people spread rumors, lies, and crazy stories
about my dog without finding out what a sweet, gentle, loving girl
she truly is

it’s not fair that people don’t understand that dogs bark, growl and make noises sometimes and that doesn’t mean anything bad, it’s just the nature of canines and how they communicate

it’s not fair that cici has been hurt by other dogs and blamed because the other dogs were not her breed

it’s not fair that i could get ticketed and made to pay for letting cici do what other dogs do

it’s not fair that some people are rich and get away with whatever they want and others are poor or middle class and have to pay (bailout anyone)

it’s not fair that we are at the beach and it’s too cold to enjoy it

it’s not fair that cici loves people and they don’t always love her back

it’s not fair that cici is full of joy and enthusiasm and life and some people are afraid of her because she wants to play with them

it’s not fair that she had more fun at the mall and Borders bookstore today where she got a lot of love, attention and belly rubs than she got at the beach

it’s not fair that some people are so devoid of humanity that they let others starve, live on the streets and in cars, and throw dogs and other humans away like trash

it’s not fair that some people care more about money than they do about people even their own family members

it’s not fair that people can be kind and generous one moment and mean and cruel the next

it’s not fair that some people are sick and cannot get the assistance that they need

it’s not fair that some people would love to have a dog but cannot because their landlord does not allow dogs

it’s not fair that some dogs are tethered outside and chained in the rain, cold and dark

it’s not fair that some people get mad at you for helping them and doing a great job

it’s  not fair that some people punish other people for giving them what they want

it’s not fair that some people ‘care’ more about animals than they do about other people

it’s not fair that life is not fair…

life is not (a) fair, it is a circus…

Life is not fair; get used to it. Bill Gates

Life’s not always fair.  Sometimes you can get a splinter even sliding down a rainbow.  ~Cherralea Morgen

Sometimes life’s not fair but if you hang in there
You’re gonna see that sometimes bad is good
We just have to believe things work out like they should
Life has no guarantees but always loved by me

pit bulls are sweet, loving nanny dogs…

found some wonderful sites about pit bulls, how we raise our dogs, no dogs are genetically mean, pit bulls were nanny dogs, raised with children,  and a woman claims she loves her partner because he treats her like a dog…
