Recent travels in California

well, Cici and I are traveling at the moment. And it has been difficult, folks due to numerous circumstances which I guess is best explained below in the link.

http://www.youcaring.com/elderly-women-50-417682

As we drove from Carson City, Nevada, (where I very much enjoyed going to the Hot Springs and Cici enjoyed being part of a pack of Jack Russells (three) and conquered using a doggie door), we made the “mistake” of going via Highway 299, which I thought was not too twisty and windy but WAS not only that but also HOT HOT HOT (weather), SMOKY from all of the fires, and lots of road work going on. Then when I decided to not go back that way to make our way south, the 101 was not at all as twisty and windy as I recalled. So either I have faulty memory or what?

We stopped in Williams, CA and stayed at a very nice not pet friendly Ramada Inn. Since Cici is my service dog, we were able to stay there anyhow.

We also stopped in Santa Rosa, and at the Solar Institute in Hopland. It was good to see improvements there and we got to see a tiny home (89 square feet) up close and personal. They rent it out for $79-89 a night and it is TINIER than TINY !!!!

We did manage to meet some really kind folks in Arcata, CA (Welcoming Center), treats galore and this photo of Cici…  thanks Leah !

CiCi

we wanted to see the trees (and did but for much too short a time)…

in our nifty new used Jeep and popup camper (don’t even get me started about how challenging it is to drive and park one of these)… suffice it to say that I have massacred a few bushes and thought that I was blocked and unable to get going on quite a few occasions but thanks to kind strangers and prayers been able to get out of REALLY tight spots !!!!

At the moment, we are back in the Monterey area wondering where the heck to park our camper and sorry selves… but if you read the link above, you will find out more about our adventures

Cici and I LOVED staying at the Bungalow. It did get cool at night and the fireplace (not real wood, the  kind that turns on via the wall) was just nice and cozy. Cici did not get a grooming but she did enjoy eating some tortilla chips on the patio with me at MiCasa, a wonderful nearby Mexican restaurant. I had a gigantic chicken burrito with rice and beans on the side.  I had breakfast (compliments of the Beach Bungalow) at a nearby family restaurant that had about six tables and a few outside. The country fried potatoes with cheese and egg on top were delicious and too much for one meal.

This Boutique 1940’s motor Inn has been restored to its mid-century charm with modern conveniences. a very doggie holiday

Tis the season to be a dog… well, that is year round… but this holiday season, below are some fun activities and dog friendly places to enjoy with your number one best friend.

Have a dog Christmas Eve or Chanukah party! Invite all your friends and their dogs over. While you and your friends enjoy fresh-baked holiday treats and cookies, egg nog and/or hot chocolate, your dog and her furry friends can munch on peanut butter dog biscuits. Do a Secret Santa Paw Pal type gift exchange… ask friends to bring a dog toy for their favorite paw pal.

Take your dog to visit Santa! S/he may have been naughty or nice and have her own wish list. Plus, she’ll enjoy the fun of meeting Santa and you’ll get a photo of your pooch on Santa’s lap to cherish and send to loved ones!

Listen to holiday music, sing songs, go Christmas carolling with your dog and give out dog treats and cookies to your neighbors.

half moon bay has gone to the dogs

We have posted about the Ritz Carleton Half Moon Bay and the beach there. This adds to the information here and for our K9 California Travel Guide. The venues listed here (except for the Ritz Carleton) have not been rated for dogitude since we have not visited them although we would be happy to visit Half Moon Bay again.  Thanks to Kelly Chamberlin at Chamberlin Public Relations for this info.

Half Moon Bay is a vibrant coastal town located approximately 40 minutes south of San Francisco, is the perfect place for dog owners and their four-legged friends. With a temperate climate ranging from 40 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, there is a wide range of activities for pooches and owners year round – from kayaking along Northern California’s picturesque coast side to oceanfront dining as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.

Note: Dogs are not allowed on the beaches, but they are allowed in the campgrounds and day use picnic areas.    http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531

Pyramid Lake, Nevada

Located about an hour from Reno. It is a great place to camp out with your dog, if the weather is good.  Unlike Lake Louise, Lake Tahoe and other famous lakes, Pyramid Lake is a completely natural environment. The Paiute people take a lot of pride (and care) in the lake, and they are reluctant to turn it into the next Lake Tahoe.  The Lake is 125,000 acres, lots of beach to explore. There are no homes or businesses crowding around the lake. The land around the lake is home to several caves with ancient petroglyphs, and artifacts.

Be sure to visit The Stone Mother. There have been reports of people hearing the cries of an invisible baby when they’re at the Lake. Some have even heard the laughs of children.  The legend: after traveling to Pyramid Lake to meet the man ruler of the lake, the Stone Mother was in awe. The man ruler was so handsome! They were married and had many children. Many of their children were unruly and the man ruler became angry. He decided to separate his children. The man ruler sent his oldest son west with one of the girls. They became the Pitt River Indians. He sent another couple east and they became the Bannocks. The remainder of the children stayed home. The woman was so upset over the separation that she wept.

Aside from the mysterious pyramid and Stone Mother, there is also a small island in the lake (close to the Pyramid). This island doesn’t look like anything special, that is until March/April each year when thousands of pelicans fly in. The pelicans hang out for a couple of months on the island so check them out.
You can purchase a pass for Pyramid Lake from most businesses in Reno or Sparks. Or, you can purchase your pass online. Day use passes cost just $6 per vehicle. There are also options for camping and fishing. It is dog friendly, dogs must be on leash, and you and Fido can camp out.

By the way, in Reno, there is a very peaceful haven of a lake Virginia Lake Park, where I took Cici a few times. She liked to chase the ducks. Dogs are supposed to be on leash. It is a peaceful place for a picnic or a walk with your dog in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Asheville & Wilmington, North Carolina

If you must go to the beaches, go to Wilmington.

Asheville, near the mountains, seems a lot pet friendlier though. Both may have crowds of spring break partiers.

top 12 fun dog friendly things to do in Mendocino…

If your dog loves to travel, as much as Cici does, then you simply must visit Mendocino county, a few hours north of San Francisco.  Horizon Air has also added flights from Las Vegas to Santa Rosa, California. You and your dog can take a nice scenic hour and a half drive north and visit wineries along the way. Most of the wineries are dog friendly and have grass and bushes to explore and sniff. Some even offer doggie treats.

Perhaps your dog would like to expand horizons, catch up on culture and enjoy some activities not available in other places.  If so, here are the top 12 suggestions of Cici the wonder dog  (as mentioned in previous posts).  Here is an update of some of the new activities, happenings and dog friendly events coming up.

l. Tiptoe through the Botanical gardens

Between the tulips and other flowers, (over 150 varieties), Fido will enjoy a nice stroll with you to the beach. Well-mannered dogs

on leashes are always welcome and enjoy free admission.

2. Beach romp (Noyo Harbor or a private beach)… most beaches are dog friendly and dogs have to be on leash.

Dogs love to splash and do the doggie paddle in the ocean. And Mendocino County’s coastline has an abundance of places for them to swim.

Big River Beach, N. Big River Road, Mendocino
Portuguese Beach, Mendocino Headlands, Mendocino
Van Damme State Beach, Highway 1, Mendocino
Caspar Beach, 14441 Point Cabrillo Dr., Caspar
MacKerricher State Park, Highway 1, Fort Bragg

And for an extended stay, you can also camp out with Fido.

With nearly 100 miles of coastline and dozens of state and private campgrounds, finding a place to camp on the Mendocino Coast is not difficult. The most popular state parks are MacKerricher (Fort Bragg) and Russian Gulch (Mendocino) and Van Damme (Little River).

3. Take a hike.

Jughandle State Reserve features a 2½-mile self-guided nature trail called the Ecological Staircase. Starting by the ocean, this trail goes inland up a series of five ancient terraces formed by waves, glacier, and tectonic activity. Each terrace was uplifted from the sea about 100,000 years after the previous was raised. The lowest terrace is prairie, followed by a pine forest, then a redwood forest, and finally a pygmy forest with knee-high trees that are decades old. The trail features an amazing variety of trees, since the ecologies of the different terraces vary widely.

Three miles south of Fort Bragg. Turn west off Highway One into the well-marked parking area. 707-937-5804

Distance and Time: 5 miles round trip; about 3 hours.

Alternate: a short, easy trail goes west from the parking lot down to Jughandle Beach.

4. Get a free ice cream cone for your mutt at Cowlick’s ice cream

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream. And Fido may also enjoy a sweet vanilla kiddie cone on a sunny day.

5. Stroll the shops in Mendocino and buy some doggie perfume.

After all the rolling, licking and splashing in the water and mud and sand, you may want to get some doggie perfume for Fido. Mendocino has many enjoyable gift shops and places where Furshionistas prefer to shop.

And there are numerous pet supply shops such as Paws for Cats & Dogs, 338 N. Main St., Fort Bragg, 707-964-3322, Fort Bragg Feed & Pet, 880 Stewart St., Fort Bragg, 707-964-3333, and Evergreen Barn Pet Grocery, 477 Evergreen St., Mendocino, 707-937-3300.

6. Stay at a dog friendly inn such as the Pacific Mist Inn, Pine Beach Inn, Atrium Bed and Breakfast, Surf Motel and Gardens, Little River Inn, Stanford Inn, or Abigail’s Bed and Breakfast…

The pet friendliest lodging can be found at these inns. Little River Inn supplies a doggie gift basket including bowls, treats, and doggie socks.

More information about specials and the Huckleberry and Hounds event in September can be found at

Here’s a preview of the 2nd Annual Huckleberries and Hounds Festival Set for Sept. 26-28

A dine-with-your-dog BBQ, dog art-making, and pup psychic readings, along with huckleberry food treats, will highlight Fort Bragg’s 2nd Annual Huckleberries and Hounds Festival Sept. 26-28.

Restaurants and shops will offer huckleberry margaritas, desserts, jam, pancakes, ice cream, and elaborate dinners with huckleberry sauces.

7. Dine together at the Stanford Inn

The Stanford Inn is an original pet friendly zenlike inn.  You can even dine with well-behaved Fido during the day.

Just to clarify:

http://www.stanfordinn.com/innlight/pets.html

By the way, well behaved dogs are welcome in our lobby but not our dining room. If you would like breakfast or dinner to be served in the lobby, we are happy to accommodate you…

8. Play catch or frisbee at the Fort Bragg dog park.

Fort Bragg has McDoggie park, a dedicated dog park, where nonaggressive and friendly doggies play. McDoggies is at Willow and Lincoln Streets. Take Maple Street east from Highway One (Main Street) until it ends at the dog park on Lincoln St.

9. Go kayaking with your dog

You can paddle up Big River in a canoe from Catch a Canoe & Bicycles, Too, located at Highway 1 & Comptche-Ukiah Rd, Mendocino, 707-937-0273.

10. Tiny dogs can take the Skunk train with their owners, if they can fit inside your purse; chew chew… chew chew…

11. Fido may accompany you while sport fishing and whale watching with All Aboard Adventures, North Harbor Dr., Fort Bragg, 707-964-1881 or Anchor Charter Boats, PO Box 103, Fort Bragg, 707-964-4550.

12.  There are many places for you and Fido to have a puppy picnic in the area.

And if you seek a hot meal, there are a variety of choices of restaurants where Fido can sit beside you outside.

Café One, 753 N Main Street, Fort Bragg
Home Style Café, 790 S. Main Street, Fort Bragg
Laurel Deli, 401 N Main Street, Fort Bragg
Mendocino Cookie Company, Main St., Fort Bragg
Nemo’s Fish Market, 2410 N Harbor Dr., Fort Bragg
Piaci Pub & Pizzeria, 120 W. Redwood Avenue, Fort Bragg
Lu’s Kitchen, 45013 Ukiah Street Mendocino
Mendo Burgers, 10483 Lansing Street, Mendocino
Mendocino Café, 10451 Lansing Street, Mendocino
Mendocino Hotel, 45080 Main Street, Mendocino
Moody’s Organic Coffee Bar, 10450 Lansing Street, Mendocino
Moosse Cafe, 390 Kasten, Mendocino

Now that you have all your travel tips, from road tripping to flying with your dog, where do you go? Well, we’re glad you asked. With a couple of clicks of the mouse on the Web, you can find all kinds of destinations that are pet-friendly. Depending on what your preference is, from the big city to the great outdoors, there is something for everyone.

For those with stars in their eyes, you can take Spot to visit his favorite movie star in Hollywood. You and your dog will enjoy a self-guided walk through the Star’s Homes. Not much of an infatuation with the stars … how about a shopping trip? In Hollywood, California, some shops in Beverly Hills will allow well-behaved, leashed dogs to visit their clothing shops. If that’s not quite what you had in mind, but you want to provide some culture and refinement: how about a trip to Napa Valley? Napa Valley of course, famous for the vineyards, is also pet-friendly. Vineyards such as Beringer Vineyard, Sullivan Vineyards and many others, welcome dogs on the grounds and some even in the tasting room, but be sure to do your research before leaving home. In addition to the fabulous vineyards, Old Faithful Geyser and the Petrified Forest are great places to enjoy with Spot.

For the city travelers …. be sure to travel to Chicago and visit Shakespeare Garden at Northwestern University for a nice walk, or attend a baseball game for Dog Day at the Park. On a Sunday afternoon take a Canine Cruise with Mercury Skyline Cruiseline. Catering specifically to you and your dogs, this cruise highlights downtown Chicago landmarks.

Still looking for more … off to New York City you go to visit the Statue of Liberty. Then take a stroll down the many avenues and dine at an outdoor restaurant such as Barking Dog Luncheonette or Grey Dog Café. Have you both eaten too much? No problem, give Pet Taxi or Pet Chauffeur a call to take you to your next destination or to your pet-friendly hotel for the day.

Okay, so none of that is really what you are looking for, so here are some basic cool places to go with your dog. We’re sure he’ll love it! It’s cheap, usually generally accessible and you always have it available. Yes, it’s the great OUTDOORS! Typically the backyard, local park or maybe even a state park, are places you would take your dog to visit. Have you ever thought about how your dog might like to see the Wild West? Yellowstone? The Grand Canyon? Rocky Mountains? By doing some simple research you can easily find state or national parks that have paths specifically designed for you and your dog. You will want to make sure to plan ahead, as there are still some areas where your dog is not allowed.

Some additional tips to keep in mind, while traveling with your dog can be a wonderful experience, always remember to be a responsible dog owner. Always keep clean up baggies with you and clean up after your dog. Your dog should always be on a leash for his safety and your well being. So get out there and enjoy the city life or great outdoors with man’s best friend!

foo foo camping and ruffing it…

cc and i decided to ruff it camping in bodega bay for a couple of nights… i had heard that there was a campground sort of hidden not by the beaches… so we stayed even though dogs are not allowed… there were other dogs there and a huge group of middle schoolers having a grad ceremony very friendly kind and generous folks from rohnert park, they helped us get a nice campsite and so did a gal and guy named julie and johnny who also helped me by putting up the tent and air bed… it ws kinda noisy ad cc did not like being inside the tent… we were up most of the first night and she bolted outta the tent in the middle of the pitch dark night and thankfullly came back…

in the mornig we had the beach to ourselves except for a lady with a cranky dog who she did not want to play with cc, but she ran and romped around hrself and we played peekaboo by a big rock…

that night we changed sites altougth people said it ws the best one in the campgroumd. all the kids left and maybe ten cars of people stayed… one with a dog named pepper, a cute polka dotted terrier mix with jack russell, they also had a few kids, and were kinda noisy, and i just wanted to sleep and be closer to the car… we moved wth the help of some guys there and then found out the next morning that the park ranger had come late and made them move their dog into their car…  their dog freaked and chewed up their car… thankfully we moved !  and no park ranger came by us…

met a  bunch of really nice folks, the gals at the Inn at the tides, lorrie and marilynn, kudos to them, while the inn is not yet pet friendly, they were very kind and friendly to me, as was a young gal at the gas station, and the people at the roadhouse, where they have coffee and free wifi…

now, how come so many people who work and get paid at visitor’s centers are downright rude and unfriendly????  the one in bodega was upset because i asked her a few questions… isn’t that HER JOB????  People told me she is always like that… sheesh…  i will do the job and be nice and friendly and helpful…. it is not like there were a bunch of people and phones ringing….

then we went to dillon beach to meet camie and we met her dog dotdog, who played with cc on th beach along with other dogs while we chatted about writing a book together, traveling cross country with our dogs…

now for the foo foo camping…  i had been to costanoa before a few years ago, kinda combo snooty camping, expensive camping and thy had a funky little veggie cafe… imagine my surprise when i walked into the veggie cafe and found instead a real restaurant.  also found out that KOA has taken over the camping part and are charging, GET THIS, $57 a night to camp out in your own tent !  give me a break… you are paying $57 for a little piece of grass and apparently dogs are not allowed in the really foo foo part, which is $150 OR MORE A NIGHT, LUXURY CAMPING,  but you can have a dog in your own tent… sheesh…

and i also found out that the reason that dogs are not allowed on any of the beaches from half moon bay to santa cruz, is that the coastal commission has decided that dogs are no good for the environment, puhlease, someone needs to have them get a grip… write letters, raise a fuss, people… it is bad enough that you are not allowed to pull off to the side of the road after sunset … what is this piece of real estate discrimination?

so there is no place for dogs or people… we stayed at big basin and we were not supposed to be there either but a gal at koa//costanoa said her friends were camping out there, and there did not seem to be any camping sites that I saw, just a bunch of folks yakking and a horse camp and hiking trails and no dogs allowed, either…  so cc and i sat in the car and rested…

there was this weird woman with two standard schnauzrs outside the cafe at dillon beach who apparently went to the beach and were bullying all of the other dogs at dillon beach, while we ate, so thankfully we missed that…  people, if your dogs do not play well with others, DO NOT BRING THEM TO DOG BEACHES OR DOG PARKS NO IFS NO ANDS NO BUTS… but of course people who do this have crazy dogs because they are nuts and treat their dogs badly…

what is strange, ironic in a way is that Carmel, down the road a couple of hours, people can park there from 5 am to midnight, ok there are five hours that they cannot, but most places make people leave after sunset. And Carmel is a very dog friendly place… so go figure.

We tried to find a camping spot in the Monterey area and went on a harrowing adventure… read in a guide book that there were two secluded nice spots near the Tassafras Zen Center, so we drove and drove and drove forever on Carmel Valley Road, until I was going where the heck is this place?  it is supposed to be only 22 miles… we drove and drove and drove and finally came to the Zen Center, the guide book did NOT say that… and we were out of gas, with no stations in sight. I rang a doorbell and the kind people gave us gas and told me that the campsite was four miles ahead up on a rocky road, ok, we’d come this far, right. we drove and drove and drove and drove up very rough and rocky road, and never found the campsite, and had to drive all the way back…  apparently, there are no decent campsites around except near Big Sur… grrrreat…

saw a deer in the parking lot of a shopping center in Pacific Grove, also a raccoon… the wildlife are coming, the wildlife are here…

cc loves Carmel beach, playing with the other dogs, running, splashing… wheeeeee…
