creating a peaceful dog oasis

imagine creating a fido delicious peaceful paradise backyard both for us humans and cici…

I’d like it to have a garden, fountain, pool/water, a sand box for cici to dig and a bunch of plants, trees with fruit… perhaps…

need a wooden box, organic soil, flowers and plants, wheat grass, grass and oat grass seeds, veggie, fruit seeds, wild bird seed, rocks, herbs, water fountain, fruit trees, sand box and more…

already put an ad on freecycle and craigslist, but so far, nada.

if you have any other suggestions on how to get any of the above for free or inexpensively, or if you’d like to donate, every little bit helps, thanks.

At the Cambria Pines Lodge, they have an amazing organic garden with a flower bed (shown below)… would love to recreate something like that. we’ve got a wheelbarrow and a wooden futon frame that I could get creative with.

Also want to create a community garden… and have artists paint the fence with murals. there is graffiti already on one side of the fence (outside) that could be painted over… images of PEACE… calming… Findhorn garden… a showcase for talented artists in this community…

this is an amazing peace site:

how to do this without spending a fortune????

and just how to do this hands on practically…   this site has some great ideas, tips and resources…

Nobody speaks for Fido when it comes to the backyard landscape. Yet he spends more time there than anyone else in the family.

What I call a K-9 conscious garden design blends amenities for you and your dog into a harmonious space. It also addresses the most common safety problems that can hurt your pooch and send your vet bill into the stratosphere.

Dogs are naturally mobile creatures, forever on the hunt for food like their ancestors the wolves. When they are cooped up with nothing interesting or mysterious to explore, they adopt undesirable behaviors out of frustration and boredom. Planting a tall grass meadow with flowers is not only a beautiful, wildlife-friendly form of gardening, it gives your dog hours of investigatory pleasure every day. Sure, manicured lawns are great for Frisbee, but when you’re at work that meadow becomes a primal bit of heaven for man’s best friend.

If you live in the city and don’t have room for a meadow, here’s a good alternative. Wheat grass juice is a big health drink for us and it’s just as good for dogs. They will naturally graze on it when they need the nutrients it contains rather than browsing your flowerpots. Consider planting wheat grass in low, wide troughs. Use flat plastic under-the-bed storage boxes with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage. Fill the boxes with potting soil and sow with seed. Dirt-cheap organic seed for wheat and oats can be found in the bread-making section of the health food store.

Since ancient times, herbs have been used to repel fleas in human dwellings. They’ll also discourage fleas in the yard and in your dog’s general hangout areas. If you grow enough of them you can cut the branches, dry and use them to stuff your dog’s bed for a natural pesticide. Many herbs were once known as fleabane because they are so widely used for this purpose, and some may also discourage ticks.

Plant a fleabane garden or incorporate fleabane plants around the garden. When my dog Dot rubs against them I can smell the aromatic oils on her fur, which not only discourages pests, it covers up dog smell with fragrance! I recommend Menta pulegium, also known as pennyroyal. Wormwood (Artemisia absinthum) is also beautiful silvery gray plant and quite effective, too. Old-fashioned tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is top of the list, as well. All are perennial. When you shop, insist on the botanical names to ensure you get the exact plant that repels fleas.

Keep in mind, too, that some plants and landscaping materials are very bad for dogs. Vets say that when dogs are bored they will chew on most anything, and when that something is toxic you have a problem. Cocoa bean mulch contains caffeine and hulls of nuts falling from trees are rich in tannin, so both can be highly toxic if chewed. These include domestic walnuts or wild hickory. A few of the many plants poisonous to dogs are castor bean, foxglove, pokeweed, buckeye and yew. The master list of dog-toxic plants can be found at the ASPCA web site,http://www.aspca.org/toxicplants.

happy dogs sunbathing… cici LOVES to lie in the dirt in the yard and enjoy the rays… this is Little Red with her new dog pal / new home… (Little Red, one of the former v-dogs)…

A tip for pooches eating plants:

If your dog is chewing up your plants, this spicy, cayenne pepper

spray solution may be enough to discourage them. Be

aware that it requires repeated applications. The effectiveness

wears off in a day or two. The rain and automatic sprinklers

also wash it away. A dog won’t be discouraged by just one hot

bite either. They’ll go back and test it a few times with undesirable

results before they finally accept that the plant is not

worth tampering with. Use this spray every day for a couple

of weeks to condition the dog to leave the plant alone. Be sure

to spray the plant early in the morning so that the spray can

dry out before the sun hits the leaves.

1 Tablespoon cayenne pepper

2 Tablespoons powdered garlic

2 Cups hot water

Stir the cayenne pepper and garlic into hot water. Allow it to

set a few minutes then strain the remnants of the spices

through a fine kitchen sieve. Pour the strained liquid into a

plant spray bottle. Use as needed.

facebook spam disability project

Updates:

Important info regarding the animal rescue page suspensions.

creative solution?

post animals that need help here, without getting suspended, https://www.facebook.com/groups/194550167276394/

https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=205722829486259

Facebooks spam filtering system is affecting the everyday user. Bans for adding too many friends. Bans for sharing info with like minded individuals. Political speech is being hindered. Animal rescue groups are unable to share information to provide pets with homes. Military groups are unable to share information. Christian and other religious groups are unable to use Facebook to worship…

as I’ve said all along IT AIN’T THAT FACEBOOK IS TARGETING ANIMAL GROUPS …

http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/25/facebooks-ban-bot-leaves-some-developers-baffled-and-angry

It says in this article that developers can get reversed but it does NOT say where/how… have to investigate this… and get back with you.

Someone, who has a friend that works at Facebook, just posted the following information about the situation with the account suspensions: Apparently, Facebook has a team working to try to fix this problem. She said that people who have had their pages suspended should send an e-mail to: coop@fb.com and your suspension will be put on a “priority list.” She also asks that this info be shared with other animal advocacy groups.

perhaps this explains why both Yahoo and Facebook were acting wonky… they are doing an experiment this week…

If you have been disabled on facebook due to “spam and irrelevant” postings for 15 days, I suggest that you write to legal@facebook.com.   Here is what I wrote to them: (I also called and wrote to Facebook at info@facebook.com and press@facebook.com)…  you can also tweet facebook, @facebook and tell them to stop keeping us from saving animals lives NOW, send them a link to this blog post and/or Bob Etier article or the examiner article, pls share this with your fb friends/twitter friends, etc  thanks !!!

I am writing because numerous animal rescue / animal lovers and groups such as myself have been accused erroneously by facebook for posting spam and “irrelevant” content and disabled for 15 days…
we have been posting and cross posting about animals that need rescuing from shelters and owners… trying to find new homes for these animals.  This Is NOT SPAM NOR IRRELEVANT !!!!   These postings have helped unite pets with owners and obtained NEW homes for pets and SAVED ANIMALS LIVES !!!

l. I am NOT posting spam
2. certainly NOT posting irrelevant content

Yesterday, I asked folks to please educate the media about pit bulls due to another story where a dog was shot because a pregnant woman fell off of a ladder and her innocent dog was blamed for her death. I wanted to let everyone know about a new media project. And so I posted to numerous animal groups sites and because of that I got disabled.

therefore, please re-evaluate what you are doing because INNOCENT LIVES ARE BEING LOST due to your spam policies. There must be some way for you to figure out the difference between garbage and legitimate postings.

Thank you.

someone created a Facebook page about not suspending our animal rescue accounts…   do not know that Mark Zuckerberg and his team are reading this page but hopefully people are being professional and factual.  Name calling and threats are counter productive. Also taking this personally. I do not think the facebook spam policy is personal against animal groups. And did I find it insulting, yes. And it is not going to help for me to fly off the handle and attack every time I perceive I am being attacked.  How well do  you hear someone when they are cursing you, calling you names, and threatening you????  Save your outrage for the matters that count, the animal abusers, the unjust legal system, etc. I could be wrong but please GROW UP and speak courteously. Bees, honey or vinegar.

Patrick and Furriends Need YOU !!!

List of Banned Groups  (also now a Facebook page) here is what it says:

Here is what I found so far.  If you know of others please add to the comments.   PLEASE PLEASE If you get a free minute go to their pages and post animals in need when you have time.  Please everyone do not mass post any one link at one time as this seems to be an issue.  But if the almost 3000 of us goes to each page and posts we can still get the word out to those in need.  Thanks  ks

Santa Nella House, Guerneville

http://www.santanellahouse.com/

Bob Reeves and Betsy Taggart, the innkeepers are the hosts with the most gracious attitude from their helpful suggestions to where to eat or visit in the area, to the momento parting gift plus they just LOVE dogs. If you bring your dog, they have only one pet friendly room so be sure to let them know when you register.

And be sure to bring seven of your favorite gal pals for a fun girlfriend getaway near to the Russian River in North Sonoma county. There is so much to do, bicycling, bird watching in nearby Bodega Bay (where the film The Birds was made), kayaking, get massages, swim, shop, go spa-ing and wining and dining in the area’s finest wineries. Speaking of wine tasting, the Santa Nella House gives guests a passport to 27 of the areas wineries where you can enjoy complimentary tastings. Wineries include Rodney Strong, Korbel, Gary Farrell, and Merry Edwards Winery.

When you go, you probably want to register for their Tuesdays package. When you register for Sun-Mon-Tues, Mon-Tues, Wed or Tues, Wed. Thurs midweek, Tuesdays are free, a great affordable option.

Be prepared to be BOW wow WOWed… Bob is a gourmet chef and artist.. Watching him in the kitchen is a wonder to behold and the results were absolutely scrumptious… the other guests were wowing it up too. He served the best enchilada I’ve ever eaten. Breakast consisted of a fabulously rich blueberry muffin, cantalope and strawberries, enchilada rancheros with eggs, chicken sausage stuffed with jalapeno jack cheese, salsa, orange juice, hot tea or coffee, home made potatoes, lovingly prepared and YUM!

I stayed alone in the lovely Emma room at the front of the home, with a canopy bed, fireplace, desk, shower, and nicely decorated. It is not pet friendly but the Library is…

Buzz around

while you are in the area, BeeKind to yourself and visit Sebastopol, about 15 minutes drive, and visit the BeeKind store, a wonderfully fragrant honey-filled bee hive of a place… and they are even pet friendly! Sample some local honey flavors include wild flowers, eucalyptus, lavendar and more. There are also incredibly tasty honey taffies including CHOCOLATE (so delicious) and cinnamon, that taste like red hots only healthier. You can also sample the bee honey lotion, take your children to learn about bees, there are wonderful children’s books as well as a real live bee hive in the back behind the store, beekeeping supplies, candles made out of bees wax and so much more! This is a one-of-a-kind not to bee missed store !
