Pit bull news

When it rains, it pours in pitbollian land, it seems, whenever there is news, there is lots of it these days… so here’s a bit of what is going on…

Patrick Update

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that the Kisha Curtis case is scheduled to continue today, Friday February 22nd at 9:00 AM. While this case has taken almost two years to get to where we are and that is so difficult for many to understand, the NJSPCA does appreciate the efforts of the Essex County Prosecutors Office and the patience of Judge Cassini. The justice system grinds forward so slowly in some cases but the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has and continues to take this case seriously. Frustration is often expressed when cases drag on but the single most important fact of this case is that Patrick has recovered, is doing amazingly well and is happy and loved with the Scavelli’s. I personally have no doubt that Patrick will be forever, “Patrick Scavelli” !!! Capt, NJSPCA

Curtis continues to deny abusing/neglecting and abandoning Patrick, asked for pre-trial intervention, it was rejected, and the next hearing date is April 8.

Good news

The Maryland House of Delegates has voted UNANIMOUSLY to pass legislation that will protect dog owners in Maryland from discrimination. Dog owners, property owners, concerned citizens and lawmakers have all been working together to find a solution to a 2012 Maryland Court of Appeals ruling that put severe financial and emotional burdens on dog owners and landlords. Next up, the bill goes to the Senate where, according to the Baltimore Sun, it is expected to be favorably received. There is no ‘us vs. them” in Maryland: everyone is working together to achieve safe, human communities!

Hero Dog Saves Couple From Apartment Fire

539845_453361454737084_1109278162_n

A dog’s heroics helped one family escape an apartment fire over the weekend.

The dog woke up a couple in the nick of time after a fire burned an apartment building in Sheffield, AL. The couple said that if their dog didn’t wake them, they wouldn’t have made it out alive.

Boots is a 9-month-old pit bull mix. Her owner, Brandon McDonald, said he and his wife were asleep in an upstairs apartment when the fire broke out early Saturday morning.

He said the dog kept nudging him, and even barked a couple times, but it wasn’t until she latched onto his arm that he then opened his eyes and saw smoke inside their apartment. Mcdonald said the dog’s bite didn’t break the skin or leave any bruises.

Like others in the building, the couple lost everything in the fire, but they said they’re thankful to still have the dog and each other.

“I’ve always kept a pit bull,” said McDonald. “I won’t ever be without a pit bull again. I will never get rid of my dog. I love my dog to death.”

Firefighters believe the fire started in a downstairs apartment. An exact cause has not yet been determined.

Detroit area may lift ban of pit bulls…

**IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED**

In Nevada

Florida

A Broward County, Florida commissioner has filed a motion to make it illegal to own “pit bulls” in Broward County. This issue is on next week’s commissioner’s meeting agenda. PLEASE SHARE and please make your polite and respectful opposition to this proposal known to the county commissioners. It is very important to note that Florida state law PROHIBITS cities from passing BSL

Florida Statute 767.14 prohibits local governments from regulating dogs due to breed.

“According to a 2008 study, “Breed Differences in Canine Aggression,” pit bulls are markedly less aggressive toward their owners when compared to other dogs. And the breed has displayed below-average levels of aggression when encountering strangers.”

“Breed-specific legislation is useless. BSL accomplishes nothing. It doesn’t improve public safety, or even prevent dog bites. It’s expensive. It does nothing to hold irresponsible dog owners accountable for their actions, while at the same time punishing responsible dog owners, and here’s the kicker: Not one single animal welfare organization supports the policy. Not one.” ~Shorty Rossi

RIP Ace

ACE UPDATES:

Ace Advocates.

Breaking News from Save Ace: Detroit has agreed to a moratorium on killing brown and tan bully breeds as talks continue. There is a possibility some dogs will be released from DAC soon. While info is scarce at the moment please realize action IS being taken and it couldn’t be done without your support.

Today our legal team had a great meeting in City Hall! They have agreed to work with us and make policy changes on how the city and DAC handles pitties, also general shelter policies. We all have the same goal in mind, and we know the first change we want made. We want Ace’s killer out! We are having a meeting this weekend to come up with our plan of attack. This fight has just begun, and we will be victorious. We will bring change, defend Ace’s legacy, and save a lot of would-be Ace’s in the future. Thank you all for your support, we will keep working hard and keep everyone informed!

apparently Ace was already killed on Monday, so they covered up his death, ugh…the plot thickens, will break your already broken heart…sickening…

Five things to do for Ace…

in my humble opinion, the petition to the White House while well intentioned is misguided. Yes, there needs to be laws in place in all 50 states, but I don’t think that there is going to be a federal law for all shelters. And I think the language encompasses too much, very broad in scope. Am willing to be and hope I am wrong.  I did sign the petition to fire the culprits. Do as you think best.

So sad… this from the man who found Ace and tried to do right by him…

“Dear Ace, you came into my lobby, crouched behind my door and stared blankly at the wall, shaking. I could see your pain – I fed you, warmed you and you rewarded me by finally looking into my eyes, and for a moment, we shared your pain. I reached for the phone, thinking that I could find you a better life… Instead I sent you to your death. Please forgive me. You did not die in vain, nor will you be forgotten. This I promise you. Your last but far from only friend.” – Mark

Now for more news…

A lawyer who fought for the injunction to save Ace yesterday says he plans to sue the city. He claims he served the DAC with the proper papers a full 24 hours before they euthanized Ace. That would conflict with their story that they never received the paperwork from the court. Story on Fox Detroit.

Don’t just be outraged by Ace’s killing, make it illegal: Despite a court order demanding he not be killed and despite rescue group offers to save him, Detroit’s mayor and pound leadership killed him anyway. While this has outraged animal lovers, it should not shock them. In New York, 71% of rescue groups have been turned away from shelters and then those shelters have killed the very animals they offered to save. In Florida, 63% of rescue groups have reported the same thing.

But if Ace had been in California, it would have been illegal for ANY shelter to kill him. California makes it illegal for shelters to kill animals who rescue groups are willing to save. Similar laws are pending in MN, FL, and NY. It should be illegal in all 50 states. We’ve got a model rescue rights law and more: www.rescue50.org/groups.html

Don’t just be upset, make it illegal! It is time to reclaim these organizations so they reflect, rather than hinder, our values.  (from Nathan Winograd)

in the world of the ASPCA, saving lives is “extremist” but subjecting the animals to daily neglect, cruelty, and the ultimate form of violence—killing—is to be defended and protected.

below is the sub-human who put Ace to sleep…he and Harry Ward must be removed and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  we cannot tolerate this.

Bruce King, Director of Detroit Health Services that oversees Detroit Animal Control who killed Ace. Here is his twitter account: http://twitter.com/#!/kingbm

I feel sick … while we’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting verdicts about Lennox’s fate and Patrick’s abuser’s verdict, hearts have been captured by the story of a sweet emaciated pit bull named Ace in Detroit. Now today, despite an owner who had come forward, injunctions that were filed, public outcry, media attention, numerous folks that wanted to adopt him, BadRap, and other rescue groups pleading for his life, the Detroit Animal Control sub-humans went ahead and killed Ace today. Why? Because of his being a pit bull… These miscreants need to be held accountable for their crimes. Either they had killed him already and lied about it or they killed him today.

they should be fired immediately… how dare they think they are above the law
