Iconic LA hotel

Guest blog post by Leslie Nestor Miranda. Cici and I met Leslie and his lovely dog Lilly last year when we went on a press trip to San Luis Obispbo. Leslie is an outstanding photographer of the traveling kind. And he has worked for Wall Street Journal Online, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor Magazine and many others.  (Note: all of the photos below by Leslie Nestor Miranda).

Many moons ago, I (CS), lived right on Normandie (around Normandie and 3rd). The neighborhood has changed a lot but I still remember the sign of this historic hotel. I wanted to live near my job for the City of Los Angeles (downtown) and the apartment I lived in there fit the bill. It was spacious, relatively inexpensive and located within minutes of downtown.

An Icon in Los Angeles

The historic beacon of the Wilshire Center/Koreatown neighborhood, the pet friendly Hotel Normandie, has been in continuous operation since 1926. It now has entered a multi-million dollar restoration period that will bring the 20th century landmark well into the 21st century.

General Manager Luke Knowles loves to discuss the history of the hotel.  This brick building has established itself as an icon in Los Angeles. It is located on Normandie and 6th Street and designed and built by famed architects Walker and Eisen, who also designed such architectural treasures as the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills and the Fine Arts Building in downtown Los Angeles.

The boutique hotel has seen over eight decades of personalities such as English author Malcolm Lowry, one of the hotels most famous residents, who worked on his masterpiece novel “Under the Volcano” while living there in the late 1930’s.

New owner Jingbo Lou, a Pasadena architect and preservationist, and his partner Niall Kelly are restoring the 100-room Renaissance Revival exterior and its Spanish Revival interior, to its rightful glory.

They uncovered a grand fireplace that was covered for years but now  xxx  as you enter the lobby.  The terrazzo floor in the lobby and the hardwood floors in the guest rooms have also been restored.

While L.A. has the nation’s largest Korean population and Koreans make up the largest nationality in the neighborhood (22%,according to demographic analysis) most of the residents of Koreatown are Latino: 58%. But you can also find Bangladeshi, Brazilian, Vietnamese, Pakistani and South American residents, businesses and eateries in the area.  Koreatown is west of downtown and south of Hollywood and is considered part of the Mid-Wilshire district.

The neighborhood is mostly residential after Wilshire and 6th Street. There are lots of Korean BBQ restaurants, coffee shops on Wilshire, Asian markets on 6th Street and local Korean bars and karaoke.

This pet friendly hotel offers amenities for pets such as doggie beds, treats, and bowls.

Pets are not allowed in the breakfast or lounge area with the exception of certified service animals, there is a $50 non-refundable pet charge per stay (unless you change rooms).   All pets must be kept on a leash at all times when in common or public areas.

In July, the historic Cassell’s Hamburgers featuring Prime Beef burgers will be reopening in the building’s 6th Street corner.

Visit the website at http://www.hotelnormandiela.com  for special discounts and an option to purchase an Advanced Purchase sale.

Pet friendly dining in the area now includes:

Beer Belly: you can relax in front of the craft beer bar with your dog, leash in one hand, nice craft brew in the other. And while your pup probably won’t be too interested in your pint, best keep an eye on those duck fat fries. 532 S. Western Ave., L.A.; (213) 387-2337.

Are dog parks safe?

Dog Park Safety Tips for Your Canine Companion

While frolicking in the park is great exercise and a good time for our playful pooches, canines may return home from the dog park with more than just new four-legged friends. Medical conditions commonly associated with a visit to the dog park include sprains, bites and head trauma. As dog park visits increase during the warm summer months, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation’s oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, reminds dog owners about the importance of safety when visiting their favorite dog park.

In 2012, VPI policyholders spent more than $8.8 million on medical conditions that are commonly associated with a visit to the dog park. VPI recently sorted its database of more than 430,000 canines to determine common dog park-related medical conditions. Below are the results:

Common Dog Park-Related Medical Conditions

  • Sprains and Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Lacerations and Bite Wounds
  • Kennel Cough/Upper Respiratory Infection
  • Insect Bites
  • Head Trauma
  • Hyperthermia or Heat Stroke

Each of the conditions listed above can make for a costly dog park visit for pet parents. In 2012, the most expensive medical condition on the list, hyperthermia or heat stroke, cost an average of $676 per pet, while insect bites, the least expensive condition on the list, cost an average of $146 per pet.  The most common condition on the list, sprains and soft tissue injuries, cost an average of $217 per pet.

“Pet owners can avoid many of the medical conditions that occur at a dog park simply by taking the necessary precautions and paying close attention to their pet,” said Carol McConnell, DVM, MBA, vice president and chief veterinary medical officer for VPI. “Dog parks are a great place for pets to socialize, but they can also be the site of accidents and other problems if their owners don’t watch them closely to protect them from potential dangers.”

970088_10151461962624786_726475187_n

Before visiting, it is essential for pet owners to understand that dog parks have their rules, just like any other community. Below are a few simple, but important tips for ensuring a fun and safe trip to the dog park:

  • Obey all posted rules and regulations
  • Pay attention to your dog at all times
  • Don’t bring a puppy younger than four months old
  • Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations (such as rabies and parvovirus vaccine) and has a valid license
  • Preventive medication will keep your pet from picking up fleas
  • Keep a collar with identification on your dog at all times
  • On very warm days, avoid the dog park during peak temperature hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Look for signs of overheating; including profuse and rapid panting, a bright red tongue, thick drooling saliva and lack of coordination. If this occurs, take your dog to a veterinarian immediately

Free e-books for dogs

Have you ever considered how far you walk with your dog? If you walk just 15 minutes a day you will have walked far enough in your dog’s lifetime to cross the United States. With all that walking ahead of you, aren’t you ready for a new place to take a hike with your dog?

To help canine hikers find the perfect trail this spring Cruden Bay Books has introduced its print series of 21 guidebooks to hiking with your dog around the United States in ebook format. While walking the dog, we bring along generous helpings of local history, botany, geology, architecture and more. Check out the selection here.

All Doggin’ America! ebooks sell for $4.99 but can be downloaded for free from Kindle between March 20 and March 24.

What makes a great place to take your dog hiking?

Well, how about a paw-friendly surface to trot on? Grass and sandy dirt are a lot more appealing than asphalt and rocks. A variety of hikes is always good – long ones for athletic dogs and short ones for the less adventurous canine. Dogs always enjoy a refreshing place to swim as well. For dog-friendly parks our guides describe the trail options for your dog, evaluate park traffic from other users, tell you whether you will need a guide dog to find your way around and, of course, tell you how to get to the park.

Dogs are a woman’s best friend

549792_312324515557247_1996789945_n

It does not take a genius to figure out that dogs can bring companionship, comfort and a good reason to exercise into your life. They will protect you from harm and stand by you during hard times and weather. For those of us who are single women, who are coming home to an empty home or apartment, it is comforting to be greeted by a bunch of wet kisses and tail wags. Someone there to greet you and make the world a friendlier place to live. A best friend. And it also is great to have a travel companion who is always ready for adventure.

But here are a few more benefits that having a dog when you are single can bring.

1. Dogs ARE unconditional love. Guys lie, cheat, steal and break  your heart. Not ALL guys but there are some real FROGS out there in the single universe. And despite our starry eyes and rose colored glasses, when we overlook BIG RED FLAGS (our friends and family usually don’t but how often do we listen to them?) and inherent warts and flaws, we are going to have trouble with a capital T. But your puppy will sniff out trouble and LOVE you always even if you leave her alone to go out on a date with a creepy frog.

2.  Dogs keep you active, young and fit. You do not always want to exercise. That is a massive understatement. You get home from work, before work, on the weekends, you just want to kick back and DO NOTHING, remain or become a couch potato. But when you have a dog, you MUST walk them several times a day.  And you may even take them for hikes and swims on the weekend, so that they get to zoom around. In the process, you get those endorphins flowing too. If you have a Jack Russell Terrier, Golden Retriever or other big dog, they are going to give you a workout like you have never had at a gym.

3.  Enhance your single life. At the dog park, traveling with your dog and all around town, you are going to attract and meet other people. People with dogs. Cute, single guys with dogs. Other women with dogs. All kinds of people with dogs. You will even get to know your neighbors. You have something in common and naturally have a topic of conversation. Much better than awkward encounters at bars, cruises, dances or blind dates. Even if you spend most of your life online, you will meet other people with dogs, especially if you write a dog blog and get involved with pet groups, blog hops and other activities on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere.  And who knows, Prince Charming just might have a dog, too.

4.  Your dog is a good judge of character. Canines cannot help themselves. They are gregarious and social creatures. And they do NOT think twice about flirting with and going up to total strangers with a friendly tail wag and kisses. Your dog may be just the right magnet for meeting men, the kind of men who are reliable, loyal, faithful and good catches. Just the kind of men you want to MEET.  Now some of them may be married guys but some will also be single. And guys can’t lie about their looks, when you meet them in person.  You will still need to be selective but our dogs know the difference between good people and ones with nefarious motives. So if your dog likes the guy, (or growls every time she sees him), you might want to take notice and either give the guy the benefit of your doubts or stay far far away or give them the boot.

5. Dogs just want to have FUN. They love to have FUN and adventures and will get you OUT of the house and to the beach, park, pet friendly winery, and shopping mall. You no longer have to settle for meeting men online, through friends, and at desperate single places (speed dating, ugh). You and your dog are going to experience all the fun activities that your town and city have to offer and then move on to other places. As traveling companions, you will get to know all the HOT spots and great places to meet truly eligible single men just by following your dog’s nose. Canines are so good at sniffing out the good ones. And what red-blooded man can resist talking to a woman eating with her dog at an outdoor patio or a woman and her dog romping at the beach. Your dogs will like one another. You will meet someone mature and responsible enough to take care of another creature, someone who have share something in common with, a kind soul, a kindred soul and the rest will be ahhhhhh romantic history.

c

6. Love is a many splendored dog. Your dog’s breed may be a Heinz 57 pound pup or shelter dog, but if your dog belongs to a recognized breed, even if they are mixed (two recognizable breeds), you have something in common with a bunch of folks who also have dogs of a particular breed. Strike up the band to meeting pug lovers, daschund hounds and/or pit bull aficionados and your match may truly end up in doggie heaven. If your guy loves animals, is kind to animals, and has a dog that looks just like your dog, you could even win a contest (for two people who look just like their dogs and fell in love). And you might just meet at a pug conference, rescue operation or pug show/event. Is that Kismet or Pugmet or what?

7. Your dog will eliminate the frogs for you. A frog who is just out for a romp in the sack is not going to like sharing his bed with a dog, offer to take care of your dog when you are sick or on vacation, or deal with canine comes with the territories such as shedding, rolling in poop, barfing and/or other stinky adventures, never mind understand why you are worried about your pooch and need to get them to the Vet ASAP, or FIND THEM if they are LOST. If the guy is mean to your dog in any way, hurts your dog, abuses your dog, RUN DO NOT WALK AWAY (and call the Police and press charges). If he wants you to get rid of your dog, take them to the shelter/pound or give the dog away, you KNOW that the guy is NOT NOT NOT a keeper, definitely NOT husband material and NOT NOT NOT for you.

8. Dogs can be good babysitters. Not all dogs. And some dogs that you would not expect, like pit bulls (America’s nanny dogs). If you are a single mom and have a dog, both will repel frogs who could not care less about babies, children and pets. While some dogs are very good with children, NEVER leave a baby or child alone with a dog.

9. Dogs want to please you. Some guys do not bring you flowers, write poems, sing songs or dance with you. Even if they are good guys. Guys may not clean house, nor want to go shopping with you, listen to you nor want to go to the cleaners, salon or grocery store. But your dog will do whatever they can do to please you. and if that includes companionship, dogs are right there, on board, in the car and ready to go.

10. Dogs are less expensive than men. Think about it. You do not have to get dressed up, put on make-up nor impress your dog. Your dog is already impressed because you feed them, walk with them and play with them. Ok, you do have to buy pet food, treats, toys and bones and vet care but how much do you have to spend on dates? Maybe you cook for your guy, share some of the expenses of your dates, and if you have a frog, are paying more than your fair share. Add up the cost of clothes, make-up, food, gas, phone bills, gifts for birthdays and anniversaries and movies and compare them to your doggie expenses. Are you paying too much? Also add up the emotional price of dating frogs and/or looking for your one and only in the wrong places and you may wanna stick to your dog like glue and let your dog help you find your perfect match.

11. With a dog you are never alone.  One can be a lonely number. If you have a dog, you will always have someone to come home to. Someone to talk to who may not understand when you are mad, sad, or complaining but will love you anyway. Your dog wants to be with you always, even escorts you to the bathroom. A dog will make you laugh, makes a great snuggle/cuddle partner, keeps your toes warm, comforts you when you are not feeling well or are just plain blue and inspires hope that you will find Prince Charming and/or Live Your DREAMS, whatever they are.

Pet friendly Colorado Springs

Guest blog post by John, the founder of EzyDog. He is an outdoor enthusiast, and an even bigger dog enthusiast.

Note: if you have a pit bull type/mixed breed, please be aware that although pit bulls are not banned in Colorado Springs, they are in Denver, and other nearby cities. Colorado Springs is about an hour south of Denver on I-25. There seems to be some prejudice against the dogs and also an underground of “illegal” dogs from Denver. Be aware and keep your dogs safe at all times.

Here are some dog-friendly spots in outdoorsy, beautiful Colorado Springs—home of the gorgeous Garden of the Gods, spectacular mountain views, and, as you might have guessed, dog-friendly patios, hiking trips, and even puppy pool parties (we’ll get back to this one in a moment).

425x282xFind-pet-friendly-restaurants-at-Pet-Hotels-of-America1.jpg.pagespeed.ic

If you’re planning a vacation (or a move) to Colorado Springs, here are some of our team’s dog’s favorite spots—to stay, to play, and to relax.

Dog-friendly housing

Our absolute favorite area hotel is, of course, The Broadmoor, with its perfectly manicured gardens, sunny patio spaces, and really tasty (though pricey) cocktails. Luckily, the Broadmoor is pet-friendly—allowing you up to two pets per room at $50 per pet per night.  Note: seems like a very steep pet fee, so Cici and I would consider this more of a dog tolerant hotel rather than a pet friendly one, just because of the pet fee…

The Broadmoor also offers things like gourmet food and treats and special bedding and bowls. And prices per room start around $175.

There are also Hilton hotels for about $90 a night.

Drury Inn Pikes Peak is about $60 a night.

More pet friendly Colorado Springs hotels and attractions…

If you are traveling on a tighter budget, consider renting an apartment through a site like Airbnb. Often even if the ad says no-dogs, people will make exceptions for well-behaved animals (one of our team members has a 75% success rate in asking for exceptions; she recommends sending emails to a handful of great spaces and seeing what opportunities arise, particularly if your dog is a Canine Good Citizen or is therapy trained).

Dog-friendly eating

Our absolute favorite dog-friendly place to eat is the big, sunny patio over at Nosh. It’s a wine and tapas bar located in the heart of downtown and its patio is decidedly dog friendly. In fact, during the summer, Nosh encourages dog owners to gather on Sundays for a puppy pool party complete with water dishes, kiddie pools, and goodie bags full of treats.

If your dog is a social creature, it’s really the perfect outing.

(It’s always a good idea to check with Nosh about the days and times for their puppy pool parties, as they can vary from summer to summer.)

While Nosh is our favorite, there are plenty of other dog-friendly patio options around too—like Ted’s Montana Grill, Champps, and Pizzeria Rustica—so you won’t run out of new places to eat with your fuzzy friends in tow.

More pet friendly dining choices…

Parks and the great outdoors

In addition to the famed Garden of the Gods, which allows leashed dogs in the park and on the restaurant patio, there are a number of parks, trails, and camping areas available for you to get outside and enjoy the wild beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Here are just a few options (we haven’t been to these specific spaces, but we’ve heard great things through the grapevine): Red Rock Canyon (spaces for both on- and off-leash dogs), Seven Falls, Bear Creek Dog Park (we’ve heard this called the best dog park in the country landscape-wise, but we’ve also heard tell of some aggressive dogs there, so be careful).

Dog parks

A big thanks to Celia Sue for letting us guest post here. We hope this information is useful and that you have an amazing time exploring Colorado Springs with your four-legged family members.

Pet friendly Oyster

The world is your oyster… Oyster.com claims that they know the best hotels and the difference between what the hotel websites say and look like and what the real deal is when you get there in person.  This is important because when you register for a venue sight unseen you want to know that you are going to get to the location destination and not get a crappy hotel for a big price. And hotel websites often feature their amenities in the best light, even photoshopping photos and making their hotel look better than they do in person, up close and personal. Oyster has other categories besides best pet friendly hotels… luxury, romantic, kid friendly, best value and best period.  They show photos and prices and provide info about policies and amenities.

Unlike here at our blog, they only seem to have covered BIG CITIES… there are no listings for Mendocino, Carmel, Monterey nor Palm Springs, for example. GIven that Mendocino and Carmel are both known as THE PET FRIENDLIEST cities in the USA, besides a few other cities, Portland and Seattle, come to mind, this seems strange. But also they do NOT list Best Pet friendly hotels for San Diego, nor Silicon Valley (San Jose area) either. And they also do not list best pet friendly hotels for Chicago, and big cities in Florida (Orlando, Fort Lauderdale), not to mention other states like Texas, Georgia, and the rest of the USA. And they do NOT list B&B’s. And they also do not list pet friendly dining, dog parks and other dog friendly activities in the area like we do here.

oh by the way, just created a new Facebook page for Polka Dot Princess travels, please like and share far and wide, thanks…

Well, apparently, on their blog, they have more info on pet friendly hotels and places…such as this photo and info about one hotel in Carmel….

tradewinds-carmel

It’s just not a “home away from home” unless we have our four-legged friends by our side. But luckily for us, the staff at the Tradewinds Carmel in Monterey County is about as pet-friendly as they come. In fact, Furball and Foofers consider the boutique more of a human-friendly spot where they can bring their owners along if they so choose. At check-in, you’ll have to make sure the front-desk puts room keys into the right paws!

Snacks on the go

If you are anything like me, when you go to the dog park, travel with your dog, or take your dog to the beach, you bring snacks and treats and other doggie stuff but do you remember to bring snacks for yourself? I get low blood sugar so it’s important for me to have sweets on hand. Otherwise, finding a candy bar at the beach or dog park is often fruitless. Pun intended. Also, candy bars are chocolicious but not the greatest snack.

I’ve bought trail mixes of different kinds with dried fruits but found them too much to pack and forget to bring them. Some dried fruits come with too much sugar and/or sulfites and preservatives.

So when the folks from Peeled asked me to review their organic fruit snacks, I agreed. The Mango is delish. No added sugar no sulfites. And organic to boot.

I was amazed, no astonished, when Cici surprised me and ate a Mango treat all by itself. Definitely thought I’d have to wrap it up with meat jerky of some kind…

My favorite flavor was the Much Ado about Mango, definitely the best. It was not all sugary like other dried Mango snacks I’ve tried. And organic. and no added sugar! Much-ado-about-Mango is an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin A.

Excellent source of: 2% Calcium, 2% Iron, 20% Vitamin C, and 30% Vitamin A. Gluten, dairy, wheat and cholesterol free.

The other flavors were apricot, pineapple, figs and dates (my least favorite just because I do not like figs and dates).

Paradise found

Organic mango, pineapple & banana

would love to try the Cherry-go-round and any berries (blueberries, strawberries, if they are going to offer them)…

The Barkers Dozen

http://thebarkersdozen.com/inside.html

Thanked us for helping them let people know about a fundraiser they had. They sent Cici several bags (three bags of three different flavors of dog treats) Delicious dog goodies… Cici especially LOVED the new organic Blueberry Bone-anza treats.  She also liked the Sweet Paw-tato Gluten-Free, Organic Dog Treats and the Chicken treats.

Ingredients:

  • Organic Sweet Potatoes
  • Organic Steel Cut Oats
  • Vitamin E

All of the treats they sent Cici are gluten-free, meaning they do not contain wheat flour or products. This ensures that dogs with allergies or sensitive systems can enjoy wholesome, gourmet dog treats, and their owners can provide them with confidence. These dog treats contain no artificial flavors or preservatives, and the treats are baked on-demand to ensure freshness and quality.

We measured the treats for their “drool-worthiness” and “tail-wag velocity” and other scientific measures.

Lacey’s Barkery

Cici got to review the peanut butter bacon dog treats, which comes in different sizes… Cici thought that they were yummy, although not many to share with her pals.

Lacey’s Barkery has other yummy dog treats too. Oat treats made with banana, blueberry, sweet potato, carrot, or carob. And they also have dehydrated sweet potato, banana, or apple treats. These dehydrated treats are organic.

Santa barbara pet friendly

Summertime travel is on the move… Are you considering traveling with your pet this summer?  Perhaps you’d enjoy visiting Santa Barbara.

Below are some pet friendly venues, wineries, and beaches to explore.  Cici and I have NOT visited these pet frendly hotels.  If you go, please let us know.

Santa Barbara County offers miles and miles of beautiful beaches. But enjoying the outdoors in Santa Barbara means more than sand and surf. Santa Barbara is also home to some 50 public parks and picnic areas. Santa Barbara is located between Los Angeles to the south (about two hours) and Solvang to north (about an hour).

Santa Barbara is about 95 miles north of Los Angeles, California. The area is known for its beautiful beaches and its breathtaking views from Santa Ynez Valley, where many a grape has been turned into a enjoyable wine. Stearns Wharf is just one of the popular places to take a pet, and there are several pet-friendly hotels and motels where you can unwind.

http://traveltips.usatoday.com/santa-barbara-pet-friendly-motels-hotels-30726.html

There are farmers markets, tons of shops, and last time we went, a Fatburger (one of my favorite places to have a turkey burger). Oh no, I just googled and it appears that Fatburger’s is closed there and also in Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. But LA Fatburger’s appear to be open since there is a recent press release on their website that Meryl Streep ate a Fatburger.

Almost all restaurants with outdoor seating will allow well-behaved pets on a leash. Just ask.

If you and your dog are visiting Santa Barbara and want to venture beyond the lovely beach at the Four Seasons Biltmore, here are some great options:

Arroyo Burro Beach Park, 2981 Cliff Drive: On and off leash.  Locals call it Hendry’s Beach, and dogs call it heaven.  Self-service dog washing stations available.

Off-Leash Areas

Dogs are not allowed on Santa Barbara city beaches, with or without a leash. But they can cavort off-leash east of the slough at Arroyo Burro Beach. Dogs also run and play leash-free at the Douglas Family Preserve, a fabulous open space on the tree-studded bluffs above Arroyo Burro. Or stroll on-leash toward the west to enjoy more scenic views.
