tell us more about Pepper, how old is she? when did you get her? did you adopt her from a shelter, rescue her or get her from a breeder or ??

Pepper is coming up on her 10th birthday (4-15).  However, she still thinks she’s two!  She was one of 18 puppies (2 moms, same dad) from my friends’ dogs.  My husband and I decided it was time to grow our family, so we took Pepper (aka Pep) home when she was 3 months old.

what made you choose a Lab?

Friends’ dogs were Labs.  Pep’s dad was a field trials champion.  We chose Pepper out of all the other dogs because she was the only one with a white patch on her chest, a ridge on her nose, and her personality, of course!

how often does Pepper do doga?

Everyday.  She starts before she even gets out of her bed in the morning and always stretches after all of her siestas.  Most nights after dinner, she’ll do her own unique ‘doga’ stance—she goes down on one shoulder with her rump sticking up in the air and tail wagging (picture).

what are her favorite things?

Hopefully us, but sure bets are:

The obvious—tennis balls, peanut butter-filled gongs, squeaky toys

Activities—going to the beach (includes swimming & riding waves), taking a ride (anywhere), digging squirrel holes, morning walks, and lots of wagging!

Worst favorite thing—Pep loves getting ahead of us on the trail and eating coyote skat (must be the right vintage though)

what kind of diet does she eat?

Mostly wholesome dry food (minus the skat).  Snacks include:  pb, greenies, chicken jerky, and usually whatever my hubby is snacking on.  Pep loves fruit…she actually pulls persimmons right off of my grandma’s tree.  She’s sad that persimmon season is over. (picture of her under tree)

are there specific things you do to help Pepper remain youthful?

Daily walks, weekly swims, supplements (chondroitin/glucosamine and fish oil), playtime, and she’s really good about taking naps.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

does she like to travel with you, do you take her with you?

Pep would like to go everywhere with us.  Our favorite vacation is renting a house on the beach (favorite beach is Stinson—private part is very dog friendly).

does she have any doggie play pals?  do you take her to the dog park or dog beach?

Pep is very socialized when it comes to dogs (helps to come from such a big family), however, she could take ‘em or leave ‘em.  When we go to the beach it’s all about chasing the ball or scooping up crab shells—she doesn’t even notice other dogs around her.

what is the best, most inspiring thing Pepper has ever done? funniest/ silliest?  most rewarding time you have ever spent with her?

Best/inspiring:  When Pep was just a year old, she had a terrible accident.  She had to undergo several surgeries and had 100’s of stitches (even actual buttons at one point) and was in a cone collar for three months.  She was such a trooper and taught me much about surrendering to uncontrollable circumstances, going with the flow, and grinning while bearing pain.

Silliest:  Pep’s ‘rump in the air’ act always makes us chuckle

Most rewarding:  My husband says the most rewarding time has been from when we picked her up until now.   For me, it’s how she greets me with joy every time I enter the room (this is one of her traits in the book).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

have you had other dogs?

I grew up in Belize and had many dogs as a kid…a German Shepard named Apache, a Dachshund named Whiskey, and several “pot likkas” (meaning “pot lickers”—what we call mutts in Belize) Ginger, Swing, Yum Yum and Tubby.

what made you write your book with Pepper in mind?  what gave you the idea?

My passion is to help others age stronger so their bodies can keep up with their lives.  My tagline for my business is “Age less.  Live More.” and when I saw a bumper sticker one day that said, “Bark less. Wag More.” the idea for “Ageless Dogma” came to me…the bumper sticker and Pep inspired me to write a book that could help people “Age Less and Wag More!”

have you written other books?

This is my fourth book.  I have written 3 previous books on health/fitness—“Fat Chance,” “The Lazy Way to Shed Some Pounds,” and “The Lazy Way to Get In Shape.”

are you planning to write other books?

Yes.  I have many ideas tucked away in my head and I’d love to write a novel in the future.

what is the most rewarding thing that you enjoy about your work?

I absolutely love inspiring others to take care of their bodies and take part in life.  I do this through writing, speaking and coaching.  It is very rewarding to be creative and connect with others.

A Doggone Tune-up

One of the best reasons to take your favorite pooch with you on vacation (even if it is a home staycation) for the Easter or Passover holidays or Spring Break is for the guaranteed exercise you will get with your canine buddy at your side. Here are a few of the fun attractions that you can enjoy with Fido or Fluffy that will give you both a good workout.

Cici loves to zoom around the park every day… zoom zoom zoom… girl dogs just LOVE to run…born to zoom…

1. Tiptoe through the tulips at Mendocino’s  Botanical Gardens

Between the tulips and other flowers, (over 150 varieties), Fido will enjoy a nice stroll with you to the beach. Well-mannered dogs on leashes are always welcome and enjoy free admission.

2. Romp amongst the waves and practice the dog paddle together at Carmel by the sea’s Carmel Town Beach. There are always plenty of dogs splashing, swimming, zooming and chasing one another.  Plus the walk into and out of the beach will get all of your endorphins flowing.

3 Go kayaking …  You can paddle up Big River in a canoe from Catch a Canoe & Bicycles, Too, located at Highway 1 & Comptche-Ukiah Rd, Mendocino, 707-937-0273.

Jughandle State Reserve features a 2½-mile self-guided nature trail called the Ecological Staircase. Starting by the ocean, this trail goes inland up a series of five ancient terraces formed by waves, glacier, and tectonic activity.  The trail features an amazing variety of trees, since the ecologies of the different terraces vary widely.

soothing the holiday doggie blues

ok, tis the holiday season, ho ho ho is upon us and I bet you are racing around for bargains from store to store and other madness. do you and your pooch get the blues around the holidays?  maybe it’s all that food and fun you are supposed to have but maybe you’re not having… maybe you are alone, broke, and/or just plain blue …

no worries…we’ve got some tips for you.

Spend quality time with your canine
According to research at the State University of New York at Buffalo, being around a pet provides more stress relief than being around a two-legged companion. As if we needed a study to determine that.  Good for them, good for you.

My #1 tip for addressing the holiday (or any time traveling) doggie blues is simple.  the dogs  you to want focus on them, so spend some quality time with your dog, do something just with your dog.

Most of my guests come with their dogs almost exclusively because we are incredibly pet welcoming, and most of them are doing a getaway which definitely includes (or is because of) pet dog recreation.

Yet some folks travel with their dogs physically with them, but totally ignore them once they’re here. That causes the doggie traveling blues, no matter whether they’re traveling for the holidays or a family reunion, special event (wedding, birthday, graduation), a special relaxing destination (like Crater Lake), etc.

How to fix that? Easy. Providing some FOCUS on the dog, and quality time (just taking them out to potty doesn’t cut it) will eliminate the doggie blues and also unwanted behaviors like barking, whining, scratching, chewing, clinginess, etc.

Give your dog some loving ME time and attention, belly rubs, massage, play time…

Spend some time each day really focused on your dog. Dogs can tell if you’re going for a walk but not really there (texting, chatting on your phone, thinking about how to fix the holiday dinner, worried about what to do when you get back to work, etc.). That focus, and intention of really being present with your dog will go a loooong way to keeping your pooch happy since that’s how dogs live their lives. they really appreciate and respond when we do the same for and with them.

So DO something with and for your dog, with intention and focus…do some training, and make it a game. That lets your dog exercise their mind as well as their bodies, and it’s fun play for both of you. Teach them a trick or behavior that makes you laugh. Be there for them 110% during that time. See how this little bit of focus time really enhances your bond with your dog, and makes you BOTH feel a heck of a lot better…a great way to have a little bit of sanity with all the holiday traveling craziness.

Enjoy! — Liz

Calming Collars

Deb Mendez makes the most delicious, yummiest smelling collars for dogs on the planet. And they look gorgeous, too. Clearly, they are handmade (customized) with lots of love and care. These collars can be used whenever your dog is experiencing extra stress (during travel), anxiety (separation), hears loud noises (thunderstorms and/or fireworks), and/or weird weather. We got a Purple Key West collar for Cici and I love that it is all natural.

www.calmingcollars.com

The regular Calm Me Down blend is a combination that includes lavender, chamomile and balsam. If someone requests an extra strength version,  valerian, lemongrass, mugwort and orange peel may be added. The Good to Go collar is includes lavender, chamomile, peppermint, ginger and other herbs. No essential oils or other fillers, just the actual dried herbs in a cotton fabric sleeve.  The collars work through aromatherapy.  The collars generally last anywhere from 3 to 9 months, depending upon amount of time of usage (every day, 24/7, a few hours a week and so on).

They also make anti-motion sickness collars Good To Go . These will help stop your pet from getting motion sickness when traveling in a car or other moving vehicle.

For summer, there is also the Too Cool collars that help your pet stay cool.

Dog Pheromones

The Comfort Zone with DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) disperses an odorless vapor that mimics the calming hormone that is secreted by nursing dogs. Pheromones emitted by animals through their skin and glands are natural chemicals that help them to communicate with others of the same species. Basically, it helps dogs calm down.  When animals receive pheromone signals, there is an involuntary behavioral effect on the animals. When the dog or puppy senses the pheromone through the nasal passage, he feels secure and comfortable, reducing his urge to act out through chewing, excessive barking, house soiling or other fear-related behaviors.

It comes in a spray bottle that you can mist away your dog’s stress and also comes in the plug-in diffuser version. You can spray the inside of your dog’s crate 15 minutes ahead of placing your dog inside. These stress reducing pheromones make dogs feel safe and secure and help you control excessive whining hiding, panting, chewing, and other behaviors. The diffuser lasts up to 30 days and refills can be purchased.  Relaxation in a bottle.

They make this product for both dogs and cats. You can purchase through Petco, Amazon or online at their website, find a location near you, http://petcomfortzone.com/home.html.

Jack be Nimble

Jack be nimble; Jack be quick; Jack jump over the candlestick and through the hoops or rather Cici be nimble; Cici be quick; Cici jump through the hoops…

doggie yoga

the problem with the article below and it is the only one I could find is that it does not have visuals and I’ve recently realized that I need to SEE not just go by a bunch of words… people learn different ways…  and even though I used to do yoga myself, there are some poses mentioned that I am NOT familiar with… so don’t assume that your audience can understand your words… sometimes, especially when it comes to exercise poses, your audience needs to see visuals.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2342525_do-doga.html

now if you are a handy dandy type of person and want your dog to do agility, perhaps you could build an agility course for your dog rather than buy one or go to a dog gym…

one I saw was much too complicated for me…

this was a good suggestion…

try substituting a children’s play tunnel from your local toy store. Don’t forget to anchor it down; you can use bungee cords or sandbags to hold your tunnel in place. Or a brick we have back there perhaps?

Cici loves her NEW shiny red tunnel, I got it on Amazon because I could NOT find it in the stores around here… at first, she tried to bite it, to play tug of war with it… but then I started throwing treats inside it and within five minutes, she was going inside the tunnel to get them. She did NOT want to stop the game. Hey, treats, cookies, yum, MORE, MORE… she did not like going through all the way at the beginning, but she did go through the whole way a few times, she will get used to it…

My roommate took Cici for a very long walk last weekend and the weekend before. After the first walk, the next day her leg was swollen and she was limping and hopping in the morning, worrying me. But it went away by midday, thankfully. I realized that she had not had much exercise for the past year and just was not used to it. And last weekend, I figured she needs to get used to exercise again. This time, there was no limping/hopping aftermath. I do think that you should proceed with caution and not over-exercise your dog. There is a tendency to go from famine to feast and overdo. Am thinking, like with anything else, slow and steady wins the race. Start off with a 5 minute session every day for a week; then increase to 10 minutes; then 15 and 20 and so on.  That is how I got myself off the couch when I was out of commission with fibromyalgia. And that is how I will also proceed with Cici and my arthritis.

we got a spare tire to do a tire jump, hmmm.. and I also got a hula hoop… to have her jump through… oh we’re gonna have a lot of fun doing this and my Cici will be getting some very necessary exercise again !

a thriving pet friendly economy

Popular consensus holds that the recession is negatively affecting most Americans (the 99%). Yet pet owners are still managing to spoil their pets even in this economy. Approximately $50.84 billion will be spent on our pets in the U.S. in 2011. That’s a lot of dog cookies and bones. A majority of the money will be spent on boarding, health care (vet bills), and pet travel including stays at pet friendly hotels.

When traveling with pooches, many pet parents are concerned about items such as fees, amenities, policies, location location location, as well as pet friendly hotel chains that cater to Fido.

Pet friendly accommodations include low or no pet fees, lots of amenities including pet tags, beds, treats, lots of room to walk the dog, potty waste bags, pet menus, and lodging that offers pet friendly perks such as pet massage, yoga (doga) classes, doggie gyms, a pet mascot, pet friendly concierge and other hotel employees and a location nearby to dog parks, dog beaches, dog friendly wineries, and/or other dog friendly places and activities. Other amenities offered at pet friendly hotels include Spa treatments for dogs. And high-end toys, jeweled collars and their own wardrobes. Even camp, gourmet treats, a water bowl and fresh bottled water.

Hotels that are pet tolerant (as opposed to friendly) with restrictive policies (weight and breed restrictions), high pet fees, and low on amenities do not get as much pet traffic as pet friendly hotels.

Spending on pet services, such as grooming, boarding and day care, is expected to top $3.65 billion. Brands from Old Navy to Paul Mitchell and Omaha Steaks all have pet lines now, according to the American Pet Products Association.

For more information, visit our pet friendly travel blog posts here at Have Dog Blog Will Travel. Some are listed by the city (Las Vegas, Half Moon Bay, for instance). We share our experiences at various pet friendly hotels/venues as well as make recommendations in our free online pet travel resources for pet parents traveling with Fido and Fluffy.
