About 20 million Americans are expected to spend $350 million this year on Halloween costumes for their pets.

  • Don’t force your pet to wear a costume. “Please don’t put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!),” recommends the ASPCA.
  • Do not put a mask on your dog or cat, or anything that covers your pet’s eyes or ears.
  • Do carefully examine the costume and remove any small, dangling pieces your pet could chew and choke on. “Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury,” adds the ASPCA.
  • Do try a couple of dress rehearsals and observe your pet in the costume. If your dog or cat seems distressed (look for signs like a tucked-in tail, folded-down ears and eyes looking sideways), forget about a costume. Instead…
  • Do simply have your pet wear a fancy collar or bandana instead of a full costume. “Collar-wearing dogs and cats are already used to the feel of something around their necks, so they aren’t likely to be very bothered by a scarf or other neck accessory,” says Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian and animal advocate.
  • Do consider having your dog or cat’s costume be “nudist” if wearing anything bothers your pet.

• If your super social dog or cat stays with you as you hand out treats, make sure your pet doesn’t bolt outside when you open the door.

  • No matter how social your pet is, keep your dog and cat indoors at home, especially while you’re out trick-or-treating. “Dogs can be easily excited by the Halloween commotion, and a bite or a lost dog will quickly end the evening’s fun,” notes the HSUS.
  • Make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing a collar with ID on Halloween night, “in case s/he escapes through the open door while you’re distracted with trick-or-treaters,” the AVMA advises.
  • It’s important to keep trick-or-treating bounty, especially chocolate and sugarless gum, in a high cabinet away from your pets. “Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats,” warns the ASPCA. “Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems.”
  • If your pet does devour the contents of a trick-or-treat bag, immediately call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435).
  • Although they’re generally safe, don’t let your pet nibble on real pumpkins, because they may cause stomach upset. And if you put a real candle inside that real pumpkin, keep it far away from your pet.
  • If you’re hanging Halloween lights, make sure the cords are out of your pet’s reach to prevent electrical shock if they’re chewed.
  • The ASPCA warns that the following Halloween decorations can be dangerous for pets: glow sticks and fake blood, because they can be poisonous; fake cobwebs, which can choke or entangle pets and wildlife; and potpourri and scented candles, which are both toxic to birds.

Happy “Howloween!”

A green Halloween for dogs

Dr. Al Townshend, staff veterinarian for Old Mother Hubbard, developed the tips below.

Old Mother Hubbard all natural treats at www.oldmotherhubbard.com and  at www.facebook.com/OMHpetsnacks

Tips to keep your pet safe and happy this Halloween:
  • Using flameless candles in pumpkins helps to avoid potentially harmful accidents.
  • Make sure to keep all candy out of reach of a curious nose and have plenty of high-quality, natural treats, such as Old Mother Hubbard® Soft & Chewy Bitz® for dogs, on hand for your furry friend.
  • Doorbell anxiety is common among dogs and can lead to barking and aggression which can ruin the night for you, your dog and any trick-or-treaters that come to the door.  You can help your dog get used to the sound of the doorbell by doing some “practice runs” a few days before Halloween.  Have someone stand outside and ring the doorbell, and if your dog barks, calm him or her in a soothing voice and consider offering a small treat as a reward. Repeat this exercise until your furry friend realizes the doorbell is a good thing, not something to be scared of.
  • If you plan on dressing up your pet, make sure the costume does not interfere with his or her vision, hearing, breathing or walking. Costumes should be lightweight and not too tight.  Also, loose or dangling accessories or details can present a choking hazard for your pet. Make sure to snip loose threads, beads or other hanging items before dressing your pet.
  • If you are going outside (for a parade or trick-or-treating) make sure your pet is on a leash at all times.
  • Although it may not match their costume, make sure your pet is wearing an ID or has a microchip.  With the door opening and closing all evening, curious pets may try to sneak outside and join the festivities. Reflective leashes, collars or stickers on their costumes are also a great way to help keep pets safe.
A few additional tips:

Leaving your dog outside unattended is a no no and keep your black cats inside, too.  No matter how safe you think your neighborhood is, Halloween pranksters and vandals roam the streets looking for trouble and sometimes get carried away, so don’t take any chances and keep your pets inside with you where you know they are safe.

Chocolate is not the only sweet treat that poses a risk for dogs. Sugar-free candy contains a chemical called Xylitol that can make dogs severely ill even in small doses. Candy foil and wrappers can also be very harmful, as they can cause choking or a blockage in a dog’s digestive tract. If you have kids, let them know that the dog cannot share their Halloween treats.

Halloween decorations should be kept out of your dog’s reach. Dogs love shiny, small, noisy and/or  other items that can cause serious health problems. And lights and cords can be bad news for your curious dog. A wagging tail can knock stuff made of glass over (including glass jars of treats). Keep sweet treats up high and out of reach.

Strangers in spooky masks and costumes can be very scary for your dog and  cause unnecessary stress and fear. It’s probably best to keep your dog in a separate room. Try leaving a radio or TV or CD player on to drown out the sound of the visitors.

No beer, wine or other alcoholic drinks for Fido.  Do not give any amount of alcohol to any animal. A drunk dog is no laughing matter. Alcohol is poison to dogs and can cause : vomiting, disorientation, seizures, irregular heartbeat, heart attack and death. If you have a party make sure you clean up all of the leftover drinks, as some dogs are attracted to the sweetness of beer and wine.

If you are taking your dog to a Howloween party or event, make sure that they’ve got their good manners in paw. Introduce dogs slowly and carefully to one another to avoid conflict. And do not feed dogs treats together but separately to avoid any resource guarding behaviors.

Now, go look at these hysterically funny dogs in costumes, 25 of them, very creative…what is your dog going to be this year? you could also crochet an outfit with black and orange yarn and a few other items, how about a pirate dog, polka dot princess/diva, bumble bee and/or green ghost?  Recycle, reuse, repurpose items and/or use eco friendly green materials.

treats not tricks, keep dogs safe for halloween

http://www.animalleague.org/pet-tips/treats-not-tricks-pet-safety-halloween.html

Treats NOT Tricks – Pet Safety on Halloween

For many of us, Halloween can be a ghostly good time. Candy, costumes and frights in the night can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, our pets don’t necessarily agree. For them it can be a stressful night that causes anxiety.

North Shore Animal League America would like to offer some tips and advice for treats NOT tricks on Halloween. Keeping your pets safe and secure will ensure that they don’t need to go running to their mummies.

  • Make sure your pets have on identification at all times. With that front door continuously opening and closing for trick-or-treaters, there is a chance they could run out – especially if they’re spooked.
  • Give your pets a quiet, safe place on Halloween. Scary parties, constant doorbell ringing or too many strangers in your home can be stressful to your four-legged friends and even make them physically ill.
  • Halloween candy, wrappers and decorations should be kept out of your pets’ reach. Chocolate can be toxic to animals, and many sugar-free candy, gum and baked products today contain xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Tinfoil, cellophane, plastic candy wrappers and party supplies can be hazardous if swallowed.*If you suspect that your pet has ingested any amount of xylitol, call your veterinarian immediately.
  • Keep lighted pumpkins out of your pet’s reach. Pets can knock them over, and curious kittens especially run the risk of being burned.
  • Keep all electrical chords and wires out of your pet’s reach. Halloween decorations are a great way to celebrate the holiday but can be harmful and even deadly to your pets should they chew on or ingest them.
  • Unfortunately, there can be tricks in addition to treats on Halloween. Keep your pets inside so that they will not be the target of pranksters who might tease, injure, steal and even seriously harm pets on this night.
  • Costumes are fun for people, but not necessarily for your pets. Don’t dress up your pet unless you know they enjoy it. Make sure the costume isn’t annoying or unsafe, and doesn’t restrict movement, vision, hearing or ability to breathe or bark. Avoid costumes with small or dangling accessories that the pet could chew off and possibly choke on. Make sure that costumed pets are supervised at all times.
  • It’s never a good idea to take your pet trick-or-treating. Dogs may become excited and uncontrollable, and if frightened may bite. For their protection, cats should be kept indoors at all times.

pit bull awareness day… plan an event, mark your calendars !

there once was a handsome healthy and charming black dog who debated an old frail out of touch rich white dog because they were both running for leader of the pack… what a contrast, no contest… that is all I will say about the debate…

***

october 25, 2008 is pit bull awareness day… visit this site, plan an event and mark your calendars !

http://www.blessthebullys.com/id111.html

this is a fabulous idea… pit bull awareness day… sponsor an event in your community… educate, raise awareness, have fun and funds for the pit bulls in your neck of the woods…

why do we need a pit bull awareness day, you might ask, well, here are two good reasons why… yesterday, a maniacal woman on the beach near Westport in Mendocino flipped out because my Cici ran over to her two dogs and wanted to play with them… the nerve of my dog, imagine wanting to play… I was very tired and got there in time to take Cici away, I discourage Cici from running up to strange dogs but on occasion she gets away from me … I proceed with caution, but before I could even get to Cici, this woman starts screaming and yelling about my out of control pit bull and how she will take care of the dog if I don’t, threatening my sweet gurl and laughing crazily, she was scary… as I walked away the crazy bitch was still laughing and ranting…. I told her that she did not own the beach and that my dog was just being friendly, to no avail…  finally, I screamed at her to shut up, not the best response…

other dog owners appeared on the scene with their dogs and i warned them about the loony tune who had walked on down the beach… cici played with a couple of cute dogs and then we left…

cici has played with easily over 200 dogs and there were 3-4 incidents where other dogs attacked her but you don’t hear about scary jack russels or terrifying poodles or cocker spaniels in the press…

the other day, we met a sweet handsome pit bull in gardnerville who had been badly burned in a meth house, this dog was just the sweetest… and had horrible scars on his back … the owner of the store was taking care of him and nursing him back to health… including socialization… he has dog issues… but seemed really friendly to me after those mean people hurt him so badly…

bless the bullies on october 25, 2008, pit bull awareness day and send your lab, poodle or german shepherd out to trick or treat and raise funds for their bully friends on october 31…
