Bacon, bones and liver, oh my

Cici’s treat fest… the good people at Entirely Pets shared some treats with us for Cici and I to review. What a wonderful grab bag filled with fun surprises.

Entirely Pets offers a whole range of pet products and supplies. And they even offer nifty info such as the Top Ten Places to Travel with your Pets (San Francisco, NY, Boston, Portland, Orlando, Anchorage, yes Alaska, San Diego, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Oahu, yes, Hawaii).

what dog does not love bacon???  these treats hit the right spot for Cici… she ate them with gusto.  Best of all, they are wheat free…

Simply Wild is a line of all-natural holistic dog biscuits that uses real whole foods like farm fresh vegetables, nutrient-rich fruits, human grade meats, wild game and omega-rich wild trout, Simply Wild maintains a strict philosophy that less is more, simple is better. No wheat, no corn, no soy and never anything artificial.

Simply Wild Maple Glazed Bacon Dog Treats (1.1 lb)

I was not sure how or if Cici would like these dental bones. But she LOVED them. Crunchy and delicious. She scarfed them up and relished every bit of them.

BONIES is a unique, healthy treat that uses all-natural ingredients that leaves your dog’s breath smelling fresh. BONIES has zero saturated or trans-fat. BONIES is uniquely formulated to be hard enough to scrape and polish gums while providing exercise for jaw muscles and massaging gums. BONIES uses a 100% natural chicken flavor concentrate made from antibiotic-free US chicken livers. BONIES Dental Formula contain natural peppermint and parsley to help freshen breath and uses brown rice as its first ingredient. Unlike other edible chew bones, BONIES contains no animal by-products like gelatin or animal glycerin.

BONIES Natural Dental Bones Multi-Pack REGULAR (5 Bones / 11.15 oz)

Cici liked the liver treats but the smell, to me, was not totally wonderful.

Liver Bits Training Treats for Dogs by Green Pet Organics are freeze dried training treats that are 100% natural Sourced and Manufactured in the USA. Made with 100% pure beef liver. The process of freeze drying preserves the aroma, full flavor and nutrients of raw beef liver giving a consistent great taste every time. Liver Bits are rich in protein and preservative free. Give as a reward or sprinkled on food for extra flavor. Refrigeration not required.

Cici has had Kongs in the past, but NONE that she liked as much as this one… Maybe because it is larger than the others. Or perhaps it is the shape. She loves playing with it and getting treats out of it.

This KONG grooves gently massages the gums, cleans teeth and helps to reduce plaque while she is playing with it.

what do you and your pooch want to do?

Maybe you’d like to take your dog surfing, to do doggie yoga, or learn how to do agility. Or to buy them a vacation where the grass is greener. Perhaps a scenic tour of New York, Las Vegas or Hawaii. How about getting a new wardrobe for two. Imagine a cruise, a spaw trip to Europe or whatever your heart’s desire.

Call it a bucket list, a wish list, or a doggie dream list, everyone has stuff they want to do.  But what we think we have to do, $$$, and other reasons seem to get in the way.  Rescue Remedy, the natural stress reliever, invites people to take a break from their busy schedule to create their “Want” To-Do list and be entered for a chance to win $2500 to help check a few things off of that list.

“We all have a want to do list running through our head, but time and money tend to make us put those things on the back-burner,” says Katrina Eichenfeldt, senior brand manager for Rescue Remedy.  “We hope this campaign inspires people to be deliberate about carving out time for their own goals and to think about what they’ve always wanted to do.”

To enter, participants simply “Like” Rescue Remedy on Facebook www.facebook.com/rescueremedy and then follow the “Want” To-Do sweepstakes link to create their “Want” To-Do list. Once entered, participants will have the option of inviting their friends to enter as well. Each eligible friend who enters the sweepstakes gives the person who invited them an additional chance to win.  Each participant also gets a Rescue Remedy coupon just for entering.

Rescue Remedy is an all-natural solution for anyone who deals with stress.  Trusted for over 70 years, people all over the world take Rescue Remedy to stress less, stay calm and in control.

Rescue Remedy devotees include celebrities like Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston, and Harry Potter star Emma Watson. As Watson told InStyle Magazine recently, “A few drops under my tongue before I go out calms me down.  It’s in my makeup bag at all times.”

Flying the Furry Skies

Someone recently asked for travel tips to fly the furry skies. Personally, I have not flown with Cici and do not intend to do so in the near future. But below are some tips to follow that I would observe if and when I were to take her with me on a flight. I prefer driving. But sometimes it is not convenient to drive long distances. If I had a choice of driving or flying, I would choose driving. But you may have to fly your pet so here are some guidelines.

There are airlines that have a better history with pets than others. For instance, Delta has a bad reputation for losing pets. Virgin America is a pet-friendly airline that accepts cats and dogs in the Main Cabin of the aircraft. Be sure that you feel comfortable with the airline. Does the airline have a good reputation for flying with pets? Are they pet friendly? Do they treat pets like baggage or a nuisance?  Ask other pet owners.  Our friends at Dog Jaunt have listed airline policies and other information about flying with your pet at their blog.

http://www.hipstertravelguide.com/archives/3450

My first choice of airlines, if you can travel separately from your pet and you are going to one of the destinations below, then Pet Airways should be your best bet. Here’s more information about this airline for pets.

http://petairways.com/content/pet-airways-air-fares

$149 each way,  compared to the fares at airlines which vary from $69 to $250 for pets to fly as baggage

On Pet Airways, passengers travel in the main cabin of the planes:

•    fully-lit, climate-controlled and pressurized
•    a trained pet attendant monitoring them
•    pets fly securely and comfortably in individual pet carriers
•    pet attendant checks on passengers every fifteen minutes during flights

Pet Airways flies to and from:

New York (NJ,CT & Philadelphia)
Washington DC/Baltimore Area
Chicago
Omaha
Denver
Phoenix
Los Angeles
Ft. Lauderdale
Atlanta

if your pet becomes ill during the flight, they will notify you as soon as possible, and discuss with you whether your pet should continue with planned travel. If your pet’s illness becomes life-threatening, they will divert the flight to the nearest airport as soon as possible and contact either your vet if available or their vet for the course of action they should take.

If you choose not to use a ticket you have purchased, the amount you have paid may be applied toward the purchase of another Pet Airways ticket, as long as travel is completed within one year. Your new ticket may be subject to different terms or conditions. Pet Airways does not charge a fee for the exchange of tickets.

Your pet will be available at the lounge about 30 minutes after arrival. If the arrival time is after midnight, they will board your pet until the next morning.

1-888-PETAIRWAYS

For all other airlines, your pet will be treated like excess Baggage and placed into the baggage compartment.  There is usually a limit of 100 pounds for your pet including pet and crate. Flying sucks for big dogs. Your pet may have to travel as cargo, fees are higher, and airlines may not guarantee that your pet flies on the same flight that you do.

Some airlines allow pets 10 pounds or less to fly in the cabin, usually not more than two pets per flight. Fees can be $100+. Requirements for health certificates and other precautions should be observed.

If your pet is traveling as a passenger, please do not take your pet out of her carrier. Some people are allergic to pet hair. And you do not want to be the person with the animal that they were forced to deal with during a flight. Be kind and considerate and keep your pet in his carrier for the duration of the flight.

Airline Pet Policies
Contact your airline through their website. Southwest has a very good reputation in dealing with pets.

Other Things to Consider Ahead of Time

Additional Costs for Bringing Your Pet
To bring your pet aboard, you will have to spend additional cash. Between buying a crate, if you don’t already have an appropriate one, air and hotel fees, and unexpected expenses, you may wish to tally up the costs to see if traveling with your pet is the best choice.

Make Sure The Destination Allows Pets
Some destinations have unique requirements for pets or don’t allow them. For instance, recently foreigners with pets had to leave their animals in Egypt. Hawaii has a quarantine period for dogs and cats of up to 120 days. You must prove that your pet is free of rabies. Your pet may qualify for a five-day or less quarantine, or even a direct release, at Honolulu International Airport after inspection if your meet their stringent requirements ahead of time.

Identification
Your pet’s collar should have a sturdy tag with rabies vaccination information, your name, address and phone number, and local contact numbers. Pets can get lost while traveling.

Train Your Pet
If your pet listens to your voice commands and hand signals and is friendly to strangers, travel will be easier for you and for them.

Is Your Pet’s Health a Factor?
Make sure your pet is able to fly. Call your vet and make a checklist of questions ahead of time. If your pet has health concerns and issues, they may have to stay home with a friend, relative or pet sitter.

A Pet’s Essential Aid Kit
Essential ingredients to bring include a pet thermometer, antibiotic or healing cream and ointments, ear drops, tweezers, scissors, cotton, wash cloth, gauze, and other items. Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy to ease stress and shock, flower essences or aromatherapy essential oils such as Lavendar that calm anxiety, music for your dog CD’s,  aloe vera gel, hydrogen peroxide, a towel, wipes, grooming supplies, pet waste bags, food, treats, toys, and familiar items. If your pet is taking medications, bring those, too.

Crates

You must crate train your pet if you expect them to stay inside one for any length of time. Purchase a crate that meets your airline’s standards and requirements.   You will also need  a blanket, liner or cushion for the bottom of the crate. Even if your pet is housebroken, accidents can happen. Long flights and lonely hotel rooms are not the best time to train your pet to stay in a crate. Get the crate ahead of time and work with your pet until she’s familiar and comfortable in the crate. Some pets enjoy staying in a crate, others do not enjoy being confined.

Before the flight, make sure that your pet has enough food and water in the crate and the crate is big enough for them to stand up and stretch, sit, and lie down. Identify your pet’s crate with large, colorful, easy-to-read labels. You might also include your pet’s favorite toy, blanket or a comfy pillow so that your pet has something familiar, something with your smell on it for dogs, a t-shirt or towel. Your pet and her crate should have identifying information including name and your contact information both at home and at your destination.

Pre flight precautions

Know Your Pet

Does your pet like being in their crate? Do they have allergies? Are they flexible when it comes to travel, in other words, when you are not around are they ok?  Take age, breed and personality into consideration.

Talk to Your Vet
If your pet has health, age or breed concerns such as Boston terriers and bulldogs breathing issues, Persian cats, puppies or kittens under twelve weeks, or a pet older than ten years, may not be physically able to travel by air. Medication such as drugs to calm your pet’s anxiety may not be the answer, either. If you do decide to give your pet a sedative, bring your veterinarian’s instructions with you to the airport.

Crate/Kennel Requirements
Kennels should be enclosed, with enough room and strong enough to withstand normal travel usage.

Kennels must have absorbent material at the bottom that makes the floor leak-proof.

Kennels must have enough ventilation, air holes and rims to prevent ventilation openings from being blocked.

Kennels must have outside handles so that handlers do not have to put their fingers inside the crate in order to move it.

Kennels have to be marked with the words “live animals” with letters at least one inch high, with directional arrows indicating the proper orientation of the kennel. (Front and back, this way up).

Airlines usually have these and other requirements. For specific policies, visit your airline’s Web site.

Early Birds
If you are nervous or afraid when flying, then your pet is going to be also. Calm your jitters by getting to the plane on time, or preferably early so that you can go through all of the security, get your pets handled properly and walked ahead of time.

Necessary Documentation
A health certificate is required on most airlines, and usually has to be issued within ten days of your flight. Your veterinarian should be able to give you what you’ll need, to show that they’ve had the proper vaccinations.

Book Nonstop Flights on a 747
Pets can get lost or mishandled during connections. A nonstop flight is best. Most 747’s and other wide-body jets have forced air ventilation in their cargo holds. Smaller planes do not.  Check with your airline to determine what type of plane you will be flying. All airlines have various requirements for pets. Be sure your pet meets the requirements.

Weather Concerns
If the temperature is below 45 degrees or above 85 degrees, airlines will not take your pets on board. Travel early in the day during summer and midday during winter.

Feeding Your Pet
Give your pet a little bit of food and water, maybe a biscuit or two, not a whole meal before travel. When you land at your destination, you can feed and water them. They may or may not be hungry for awhile.

Walk Your Pet
If your pet is going to be contained in an airplane for a long time, you want will them to stretch their paws before traveling. Tucker them out. Plus, they will need to eliminate on the walk. When you land, ditto.

Baggage Personnel
You will likely need assistance with your luggage and your pet. Be sure to tip the baggage personnel or porter well as incentive to take proper care of your special cargo furry friend.

a man and his dog… and a dog travel network…

Curtis and his dog lugnut sit at a rest area in central oregon. When a car drives up and the people get out of the car, he greets them happily and offers to clean the bugs off their windows. He is courteous, polite and upbeat, even pleasant… He is living in a weekly motel with his dog, a pit mix. The donations he receives from people keeps him off the street and fed.  Enterprising.  get this man a yurt.

cici wants a yurt… buy this dog a yurt… her own yurt. my own yurt.  a yurt to call our home…

Some interesting dog travel blogs including where to find the dog friendly beaches in Italy.

We are now in Grants Pass, Oregon… and may stay here a few days and camp out this weekend… hah, says Cici… I am not sleeping in a tent… and I am not allowed in the campground yurts… oh well…

we are staying at the Sunset Inn in Grants Pass on Sixth Street… Stephanie and her mom have been filling me in on all of the chocolate venues (three) in town besides the wonderfully delicious Cary’s toffee place… Stephanie’s mom said Cici looks like her dog in Hawaii… and we also talked about Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  Am looking forward to new chocolate sampling… yum yum…

now here’s more about the Sunset Inn… I stayed at a Super 8 the other night for $80 and got a sorry tiny bagel, no cream cheese… while here at the Sunset Inn, they actually had real bagels, the everything bagel, cheese bagels, a variety of bagels and with cream cheese… and they gave me a $5 gas card, the room smells fresh, none of that motel smell, and the shampoos are eco friendly.  Plus, Stephanie gave me a toothbrush kit and they have other types of kits for shaving, sewing, etc. and told me about where other yurts are in the area and parks where I can take the cici bug… and there is hot chocolate and coffee throughout the day in the lobby… now why don’t other motels give folks amenities like these?

i love this photo because every time I go out of the car, cici goes and sits in the driver’s seat as if she is going to drive the car… she usually waits patiently for me to return… on occasion, yesterday, she would not move over and wanted to drive next to me, the car is too full and there was no room, but a girl dog just wants to cuddle with her mom while driving… or lean her head on her mom’s shoulder or arm or lap. awwww…

Good news for the Michael Vick dogs: loving human beings

Several animal organizations have taken on the task of working with the Michael Vick pit bull dogs to get them new loving homes… Best Friends, Bad Rap and others, to name a few. And the dogs are so sweet and loving, says Bad Rap, it’s been easier than they thought.

http://www.badrap.org/rescue

http://www.badrap.org/rescue/vick/now.htm

lBullie Buddies of Las Vegas reported that in a series of dog temperament tests conducted by the American Temperament Test Society, Pit Bulls had a passing rate of 95 percent. These tests put different dog breeds through various situations. Some tests involved the participation of strangers. Any sign of aggression and stress from the dog resulted in a failure of the test. The American Kennel Club believes Pit Bulls are the ideal family pet and recommended the breed as an especially good dog for children.

FYI, Pit Bull Awareness Day is Oct. 20.

Now here’s a beautiful story of how a loving individual person can make a difference in a dog’s life and in the life of others…I have a 1 year old female red-nose pit I ‘rescued’ from my neighbors. They got her as a puppy and were very infatuated with the idea of having a puppy but not taking care of it. The dog was a lonely and neglected puppy. Countless times as a puppy she’d be left outside leashed to their porch at night. I had to save her once as I heard a yipping sound and came outside to see her choking while dangling from the raised porch. My neighbors aren’t exactly well off, As the dog grew older she started digging under the fence that separates our yards to come play with our two dogs. I’d send her back though since it wasn’t home for her.A few times I saw the neighbors with the dog and they would hold her by the neck in the back of a pickup truck and stick her face into another dog to instigate aggression. This happened on many occasions and it saddened me greatly, it made me mad actually.

I saw that they had plans to make her a fighting dog, and it’s no wonder as Dog Fighting is a fairly large underground pasttime here in Hawaii. Even the laws here are too lenient on participants.

http://network.bestfriends.org/hawaii/news/18664.html

I turned that anger into an orchestrated plan to save her. I’d show her both sides of the fence. If fate worked it’s magic, if she’d at least see there could be something better, something more loving, maybe she would choose. So as the dog would make her digging excursions to our house next door, I stopped sending her back right away. I played with her and my dogs. I let her inside the house after a good bath and started loving her. After awhile she learned where the food was and ‘how things worked’ from our other two dogs. The calls, commands, tricks, pack mentality along with solid leadership that all dogs crave, and the most obvious…attention…We had a permanent hole setup between the houses.

During the day the pit bull would be over at our house until our neighbors came home. She’d always rush anxiously to meet them, crawling under the fence quickly up to them just to be dismissed as they went inside the house and passed her by. She was getting big, she didn’t have that ‘cute’ size factor that people love about puppies. The pit bull continued to grow and grow while this kept happening. She had sad eyes… all the time, except when she was over here.

After some time she just kind of starting living with us 24/7. We’d have guests over and she’d be playful and lick everyone, even the kids, which we have over all the time from my fiance’s HUGE family. As her training and age progressed, she developed a sensible guardian mentality. Which was very good for us in our neighborhood, there’s a certain shady element around here, but this was good as the dog certainly had a very developed presence. One day during a weekend BBQ, we had a party in our front yard with family. Our dogs were social with everyone and were well mannered.

Then our neighbors pulled into the driveway next door blasting their bass intensive stereos. the pit bull dog started barking at them. The looks on their faces was curious, but then stupefied. They then walked quietly inside their house. I had a feeling from this .. and many family members at the party picked up on the vibe too. It suddenly became the topic in our ‘talk stories’ as hawaiian slang goes. There was a large agreement and unison as to why this dog was with us, and how she was home now.

Our discussion was discreet as not to be obvious we were talking down on them, but the feeling shot right through the walls.A week passed, and I thought of ways to make things official for this pit bull dog being with us. Confrontation on their part would be… interesting, to say the least. I would have to point out the reasoning of why we wanted her thus exploiting their own shortcomings. I decided to just keep showing the love and Aloha. So I did.

Another week passed and it came up suddenly in small talk with the neighbors, they asked humbly if we would take her since she lives over here so much now. I just looked in their eyes saying “I will, Mahalo, she’ll have a good life here don’t worry.”

Since this happened there’s been less loud music, gambling and a shady element on their side of the fence. My neighbors have taken small steps in the right directions as well. They still play with her through the fence, but I can tell… it still hurts them. I can tell though they’re working harder to get out of whatever hole they’ve dug themselves.Hmmm, maybe I should let them in too.

That’s it. I should have seen that earlier. Well, I’m off to re-open some holes in the fence.

Cool story, huh…

Now here’s a bunch of pit bull friendly sites with great info on adopting a pit bull… being a responsible owner, keeping them safe and happy as well as overcoming prejudices.

I am a published travel writer and co-author of five romantic travel guides, originally from NYC. I have lived in Monterey, Burlingame (SF airport area) and Bodega Bay and know many local favorite hot spots, secret surprises and can share insider’s tips about writing travel stories. This summer, as you know, I took this grand tour along the California coast to Ashland, Oregon with my wonder dog. I have traveled around the world and lived in Bangladesh, Canada, England, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, India, Israel,
Singapore and Thailand (as well as NYC, Arizona, California, Florida and Nevada). I have also driven across the USA numerous times.

Women traveling together… what a goldmine…

I did a search for women traveling for chocolate and came up with a goldmine of resources for women travelers, women traveling together, not much re: chocolate travel but below are resources for women travelers… wine, arctic adventures, books, travel writers, girlfriend getaways, business travelers, exclusive hawaiian vacation homes, new zealand, canada, adventurous, gutsy women and much more…

AAA came out with a recent study not too long ago which says that girlfriend getaways account for approximately four percent of all US leisure travel and the leading reasons women want to getaway is to
bond with friends or family and to escape from their daily responsibilities. The most popular activities while on a girlfriend getaway are dining out, shopping, spa and going to the beach or pool.

Here are some of my own resources as well as some that I found:

What the wonderful, kind and generous Valerie McDermott told me about the AAA study and her findings/trends she has noticed…

We have seen a couple of trends in recent months most pointing in the beach and spa direction. Texas has become a popular destination for women. Texas offers exciting nightlife and great shopping in cities like San Antonio and beautiful luxury spa resorts like the Lake Austin Spa Resort.

Florida continues to be popular with destinations like Miami Beach and their unique boutique hotels or a more active and relaxing getaway like The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort in Longboat Key, Floriday where you can lounge on the beach, take a mixology lesson or get your own cute tennis pro to teach you some new moves!

We are also seeing the baby boomers getting in on the action. These women want to experience life to the fullest and a very popular getaway for this demographic are the group tours. Gutsy Women Travel offers beautifully put-together getaways to such locations as Tuscany, British Columbia, Napa Valley and New York City. These tours are perfect for the woman who wants to see it all but may not have like-minded friends so they go for it solo! Most of these tour groups not only allow solo travel but encourage it and chances are you will meet friends for life.

On the other end of the spectrum — bachelorette parties are hitting the road. Women are marrying a little later in life and not settling for the male stripper and a local pub crawl. They want spa getaways, bikini bootcamps like Bella Vita in Ft. Lauderdale, FL to get into shape for their big day or weekends of shopping, spa-ing and nightlife in Chicago or San Francisco. Of course their is always Las Vegas.
