Pit bull mix attacked by Beagle

I live for the day this type of story is commonplace and makes the news.  It makes me ill to constantly see “news” stories that report that pit bulls mauled somebody or their dog. This story below is actually based upon an experience Cici and I had just yesterday. And Cici has been attacked at least five or six times. After she was thrown down on her back, throat attacked, blood drawn, Cici still wanted to play with the dog that attacked her. After her head was bitten by another vicious dog, she still has scars, she did not thankfully want to play with that dog.  Sometimes I think she is too forgiving. Don’t know if the dog yesterday was actually a Beagle because it was sort of old and brown and mangy looking. But suffice it to say that these types of stories never get reported, ever. Not now. But maybe someday they will.

Woman saves her pit bull mix from beagle attack

The Astute Press
SEASIDE, Ca. — A Seaside woman was walking her pit bull mix dog down San Pablo Street going to the store on Noche Buena when an 8 year old mangy-looking Beagle attacked her dog through an old dilapidated wooden fence. The owner of the Beagle apologized for his “overprotective” dog.  “He’s just an old guard dog doing his duty,” said the neighbor.

The Seaside Sheriff’s Office reports that 61-year-old Sue Grace was wary of walking on that side of the street because the Beagle had viciously tried to attack her dog once before. But the owner of the Beagle insisted that his dog was safe. She proceeded to the other side of the street after the man closed the fence door leaving the Beagle behind it. But as she and her pit bull mix proceeded down the street and passed the fence, the Beagle went crazy Wednesday afternoon.

Grace quickly pulled her dog away and went on her way. Her pit bull mix had been wagging its tail and wanting to play with the Beagle. But the Beagle growled viciously and tried to bite the pit bull through the fence.  Her dog, Cici, whines every time she goes by the street.  She still wants to play with the mean old Beagle.

In the past three years, 4 year old Cici has been attacked by a nasty Shiz Tzu, Cairn Terrier, mutt of unknown origin who got her by her throat drawing blood at a dog park, two Labrador retrievers, an unsocialized Jack Russell, Cocker Spaniel, and a Border Collie. She has played nicely with more than 600 dogs of many different sizes and breeds including poodles, Yorkies, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Dalmatians (she is part Dalmatian), Boxers, Great Dane, hound dog, Golden Retrievers (her favorite), Labradoodles, an Australian Shepherd she loved the most and many others.

Animal control does nothing about dogs unless they are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The pit bulls and pit bull mixes are blamed for the wrongdoing of other dog breeds such as malevolent Beagles even though American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier’s temperament testing studies have concluded that Beagles, Lassie (collies) and Toto dogs (cairn terriers) tested with scores below that of the Pit Bull breeds and mixes.

http://www.atts.org/stats2.html

The American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS) conducts annual evaluations for all dog breeds, and pit bull mixes consistently rate higher than some of their more popular counterparts, including the Golden Retriever and Collie. Bully breeds also excel at the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training, which is a program that teaches good dog manners and responsible pet ownership.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), many dogs involved in attacks are incorrectly identified as bullies in media reports, which fuels the belief these breeds are always to blame. But the Center for Disease Control reports that the chow chow, German shepherd, Rottweiler and even the Yorkshire terrier have all been responsible for fatal attacks throughout the years, so it’s not a breed-specific problem.

Six US presidents have had bullies.
The executive pooch to Theodore Roosevelt was a bull terrier named Pete, but Pete wasn’t the only bully to garner good favor with a commander in chief. Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter have all called a bully breed their First Dog.

Nanny dogs
Bully breeds such as the Staffordshire bull terrier have a long history of being good with children and are often called “Nanny Dogs” in England thanks to their sweet and nurturing demeanor around kids. Bullies that are well-socialized and properly cared for are generally wonderful pets for children, as they are able to handle any rough-housing and are drawn to kids’ carefree dispositions.

can pit bulls even be heroes? yes, say many people who know and love them.

And the lesson learned from the supposedly most vicious dogs from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels have taught many is that even fighting dogs can become good canine citizens, therapy dogs and service dogs.

Whine Country Unleashed …

Welcome to K9ifornia, a state of mind as well as a dream whine country destination.

Meet the Whinemakers

Whinery dogs have been bred for centuries with a natural tendency toward making just the right heartbreaking sounds that evoke human sympathy  and generosity. Nature has  blessed these  distinctive dogs who innately know how to look and sound in order to attain whatever they want.

The premier whine-making regions of Northern California include the birthplace, Sonoma County, where it all begin, with one renowned pup named Napaw. Napaw’s whinemaking skill is famous worldwide. Napaw whined until all of the cows and sheep literally came home.

Growing up a Whinery Dog

Young puppies master the fine art of whining by the age of three months  (in dog years), in human years that is equivalent to the terrible two’s. Puppies whine to ensure their mom properly takes care of them. Whining is similar to the cry of human infants. Whining is an automatic response whenever the pup is cold or hungry. But pups soon learn to whine whenever they want attention.

Through mastering the whine, puppies are fed the most expensive food on the planet, have chefs cook for them, go for frequent walks, receive delicious treats from bankers, gas station attendants, and other strangers, obtain all of the toys,  belly rubs and head scratches and other attention they want. The whine combined with an adorable looking smile can lead to sleeping in the same bed as humans despite frequent woofing, paws kicking in the ribs, sleeping on the dog parents head and/or exuding doggie breath in the human’s face.

Whinery dogs have sensitive noses that pick up the aroma, scent and whiff of a cat, squirrel or chipmunk from miles away. If their hunger for chasing said prey is not satiated immediately, they will employ whining techniques until they get what they want.  Some whinery dogs (persistent bull dogs, pit bulls and terriers) are particularly known for this..

Essential forms of communication

Barking is an enthusiastic shout to canine friends near and far.

Growling is a warning or a way to express dissatisfaction. Some whinery dogs growl whenever their human caretakers aka as dog parents misbehave.

The howling of a hound dog at the moon, sun or whoever is in their vicinity has been known to drive humans mad but is an extremely effective long-distance communication alerting other hound dogs to express their inner wolf.

Whining can be a cry for help or a plea for care.  Answering your whinery dog’s every whine and whimper will ensure their lifelong devotion.

Whine Clubs and Whine Tours

Popular whinery dogs enjoy sharing the nuances of whining with like-minded packs of canines. Some of the most famous names in American whinemaking live in Sonoma County where you can enjoy the full range of whines from Napaw’s line including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Zinfandel.

Tours are guided by well educated whine enthusiasts. Wannabe whinery dogs swirl the information around their palate,  testing out the latest  successful techniques such as the sad eyes and whimper combo, a deliciously fragrant red whine. White whines are much more subtle with just a hint of dramatic flair.  Imbibing complimentary sparkling whines while learning about the whinemaking process has become a favorite pasttime of savvy canines everywhere.

Types of Whines

Instinctual

Recovering from surgery or following a trauma is an innate and spontaneous reaction to pain. Milking sympathy for all it’s worth is learned later.

Nervous Whines

Whining to express separation anxiety is a way to alleviate stress and break down  barriers. Whinery dogs are very social creatures. This type of whining expresses the dog’s desire to be with you 24/7. Dogs just wanna be #1 in your life. You should feel flattered and act appropriately.

Animated Whines

Sometimes dogs whine as part of the adventure of life.  If they see another canine, they may whine until they can play together on the beach or at the park.

Whines For All Occasions

Praising and  petting your whinery dog constantly is the key to happiness. Responding to the demands of your whinery dog promptly instills a sense of security, purpose and power important for the dog’s  self-confidence, self-esteem and self-worth.

Dessert and Special Occasion Whines

Every whinery dog develops their own unique repertoire of whines.  Whines can be used to signal many different desires. Your whinery dog’s special whines are a passport to instant gratification.

Whine pairings

Food and whine pairings are natural. Staring at the humans and/or the food until said culinary delight is administered is a basic ploy. Whines can be joined with eye and body movements, paw touching, shaking and shivering until the perfect whine has produced the sought after outcome. Bones, treats, walks, toys and squirrels are all excellent reasons to whine.

To sample the best whines of expert whinemakers, visit an acclaimed whine show where all of the variations are represented. Becoming a fine whine connoisseur takes time but one can learn the delicate differences between a fiery red whine and a softer more gentle white whine.  Each whine bouquet offers its own  perfume.

Whine and you whine alone

Some humans do not appreciate whinery dogs. Whining should be viewed as a  communication device to achieve a canine goal.    Cater to your dog’s every whim and you will attain nirvana and peace of mind.   Pampering a whinery dog with treats, doggie ice cream and a steady diet of belly rubs, massage and spa treatments, dog yoga classes and attention will ensure a gratifying life.   If you employ the strategy of feed the dog not the whine then you are sending the wrong message. Your whinery dog has put a lot of effort into fine tuning just the right whines for your listening pleasure, the very least that you can do is respond favorably to their performance. Bravo, Fido, bravo !

when harry met cici…

Cici has a new beau… from our undisclosed location we drove near to yosemite, to a little town called mariposa to visit a gal named Melinda who is building a healing center… the road was VERY tricky and windy up to her place from the town but from 99 to the 41 in fresno to the 49 it was quite lovely… very refreshing and inspiring to see green trees again…

when we got here, we were greeted by the welcoming committee… first, star bear, a very large dog (part Malamute and border collie) put his paws on the car and peeked in to say hi… then irene the hound dog said hello… jenny rose the lab joined in and then we made our way out of the car and harry met cici,  it was puppy love at first butt sniffing…

Harry is a six month old Queensland Heeler…  and cici is still a young gurl, so they bonded instantly, jawing, wrestling, licking and rolling in the dirt and there is quite a lot of that here… cici’s new halter is quite dusty now… she immediately jumped into the filthy pool and swam in the water.  really warmed the cockles of my heart. and i was greeted to find out that we would have to leave early this morning… a fine welcome…  I came here to find out about becoming a caretaker, I think not…

still, there are two yurts going up, a fabulous view from this mountain, cool fresh air and we had turkey burgers for dinner, after dinner entertainment was provided by harry and cici… and soon star bear wanted to get in on the action… jenny rose was the only one who did not seem to appreciate the attention that cici garnered from the two males… irene was not all that thrilled, either.

we visited the yurt after dinner and all was fine until two neighbors dogs came along and looked like they would attack cici, we hightailed it through the garden, as a precaution and made our escape back to our tiny cabin… it was off to bed at about 8 but of course we did not actually fall asleep until about 3 am, and we got up around 6… cici does not seem to do well sleeping when windows and doors are open and she can see wildlife… star bears came and sat on our porch to protect us and cici wanted to play with him… and she was restless… there were two tiny beds, one a couch, and i thought she would sleep on that and i on the bed… she ran around, trashing the blankets, trying to get settled to no avail… then she decided to come visit me in my narrow little bed, plop she goes… we have not slept together in a tiny single bed since last year, she cradled my legs… then she was off again to the couch… then back to me at some point, where she cuddled my head… and took over the bed… i went to the outhouse, actually it’s a small bathroom with a compost toilet, and came back and there was cici in her usual place in the middle of the bed… the bed is a little high off the ground and i did not want her to jump off of it, so i tried to move her, finally got her and me where i wanted, cuddled in my arms, she was shaking slightly, and we finally fell asleep…  had some weird dreams…

this morning, we arose at the crack of dawn, and I went outside to go up to the main house to go to the bathroom, and the dogs greeted us good morning… star bear first, of course. then we had a nice breakfast, cici and harry played and chased cats and we were ushered on our way…

we were going to hang out in Mariposa but I was utterly unimpressed (been there before, too) and decided to take the 140 to merced which I thought was madera… we had stayed in a motel there last year. got to merced and realized I was in a different place and decided to head up the 99 a bit and we got off in Turlock, saw a sign for a motel and they take pets, and here we are… my back will mend, nice to stay in a non dusty queen bed, with wireless internet and all of the amenities of modern life, a  tv, phone, etc.

we may go back to the coast in the morning, we shall see… for now, we will rest… cici needs a bath and she met a new friend at the gas station, where they have a taqueria and pizza place.  the pizza guy took care of her while I ran in to get a burrito… very nice…

don’t forget Gone with the Wind… who played Bonnie Blue?

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens:

http://www.gardenbythesea.org/visitor/

The botanical gardens feature indigenous plants, including the native rhododendrons that blanket the area. Manicured formal gardens, a dense coastal pine forest, fern-covered canyons, diverse plant collections, and flower-filled coastal bluffs overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean. Located on 47 acres that lie between California’s scenic Highway One and the Pacific Ocean, includes canyons, wetlands, coastal bluffs, and a closed-cone pine forest. A moderate climate grows a wide range of tender species which cannot survive the more extreme heat or cold that occurs in other locations.

We saw incredibly beautiful  rhododendrons of many hues, white, blue, purple, pink trumpet, red, peach, white pearl, white swan, blue peter, president roosevelt and took a lovely walk to the beach/bluffs. You can take your dog on a leash and you could probably picnic with your dog, it says the trail is steep to the cliffs but it was not that strenuous… you go through a gate, and cici enjoyed stalking bugs every step of the way. The long walk did not tire her out as much as I’d hoped, even though we walked about an hour… she still had energy left to play with Gracie, the dog at the Atrium B&B. She ran around the yard, and greeted people (lick lick lick)…

We stayed in the lovely, cozy and comfy quilt room (one of three pet friendly rooms) with a fireplace, very comfy bed…while I had breakfast of mushroom cheese omelet, fresh fruit and fresh baked banana bread, Cici played outside in the yard with Gracie.

The Atrium B&B is at the north end of Fort Bragg… http://www.atriumbnb.com/

Innkeepers Mary, Gail and Joanna Jenson created the dog park… McDog park on Maple. It took about two years to bring the park into fruition. And came about because of their commitment and dedication and with the assistance of the community, the city and the Parks and Recreation Department. The park has a small dog area and a large dog area, it is entirely fenced and quite a nice size with grass. Soon, they will have a water fountain for the dogs.

Every year there are a few festivals including the Huckleberries and the Hounds, the oldest Ugly Dog contest, and several dog parades and costume parties for the K9’s.

Cici played with about 6-7 dogs at the dog park, and the people and dogs were really friendly (unlike the dogs and owners in Carson City, Nevada)… there was a dog named Zelda, two goldens (huge funny guys), a hound dog, a few others… unfortunately, one dog ruined Cici’s day… I had a bad feeling when I saw the dog and sure enough, the minute this dog came inside the park, the dog got Cici by the throat and would not let go of her… it was difficult to pull them apart, the owner finally got his dog off of Cici and I left, shaken to the core. Cici’s mouth was bleeding. She got chewed up a little bit, it was very scary.  She has not let me look at her much. I was able to go to PAWS, and sat in the car for a bit to calm down, take some Rescue Remedy Bach Flowers for shock.  Got Cici a treat and some dog food, which she gobbled up. Then I was thinking what can I put on her mouth, and thought I needed an Aloe Vera plant. We drove by a nursery and I asked them. The woman there at Parker and Jensen I think it was called, gave me a free aloe vera plant. I tore off a leaf and put some on Cici’s mouth.  Then I went to the pharmacy and got some hydrogen peroxide to clean the two wounds on her mouth. She was not happy about it but it made me feel better.

There is a Humane Society here… http://www.MendoHumane.com/?cat=18

Now we are relaxing at the Surf Motel and Gardens ($49 to $250 plus $10 pet fee per night). This is a very nice AAA motel, they even have beautiful gardens and a pet exercise area, similar to the one at the dog park, only smaller. Each room has a fridge and microwave, cable TV, wireless internet, coffee pot and complimentary continental breakfast in the morning (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fresh fruits and danish). This motel is at the south end of town and it is quiet. The staff is friendly and helpful.  The Harvest market is next door, this seems like a Whole Foods type of market. Cici and I slept well and love being near the beach.  Just the relaxation we needed after the day we had…

how to combat dog prejudice…

I just went to a couple of websites promoting fear and hatred against pit bulls… and some well-meaning folks, who probably own pit bulls or rescue them, tried to reason with these people. First thing you should know is that you cannot reason with fear, hate and violence-filled, delusional folks. These people are projecting their own brutality onto dogs, how pathetic is that. I was raised by a mentally ill  mother so I know firsthand what I am talking about. People who are filled with fear, rage and violence do not listen to rationale thought…

I also had an experience at a dog park. This woman had a very mean Jack Russell who was always sniping at the other dogs including mine. And she would sit around talking to anyone who would listen about my dog. One time, all of the dogs decided it was a good idea to jump into the muddy water, that stank, and had a blast and as we walked over to rescue them, I said perhaps we should get them a pool to play in.. She sniped back to me, you should get your dog a choke collar and something else I don’t recall.  I was taken aback by her unexpected and mean remark. From then on, I stayed clear of her and her vicious dog.

I started going to the park very early in the morning when no other dogs were there because it had become increasingly impossible with this woman and her friends. My dog decided to go into the stinky muddy water again and we were having words owner to dog and I was considering washing her off with a hose that was nearby or a sprinkler. She was not happy about that idea and we were in the middle of this snafu when along comes crazy Jack Russell  dog and his owner. Her dog attacked my dog who was already upset, I was crying and tried to break the dogs apart, and she stepped into it as well and she got bit or scratched. I felt really bad about the whole thing. She apologized to me for her stupid remark and we agreed to not be at the park at the same time ever again. I would do the early shift and she would do the later shift. Soon after that, I just stopped going to that park at all. It was not fenced, not available on the weekends and my dog liked to get all muddy and stinky.

The point of this story is that this woman had projected her own viciousness onto MY dog when it was HER dog that was a BIG problem. But her dog was a Jack Russell and there are no news media stories about how mean those dogs are. She had a dog that bit and sniped at other dogs and she was very cruel to her dog. I saw her on more than one occasion trying to force and dominate the dog into submission. That is NOT how you get a dog to submit.  My dog submits at the drop of a hat. She does not have to be the top dog. She loves to play and sometimes she plays a little rough for me, but she was fine with playing with over 100 dogs over the summer (about three months) at various dog parks in different cities as well as dog trails.

When we were working at Sequoia / Kings Canyon she had a great time for ten whole days with four male (unfixed) dogs, a Great Dane, a German Shepherd, a little terrier mix and a hound dog. They explored the bushes and trees and on one occasion, the tiny little terrier was the ringleader of an escapade that scared us owners to death. He decided that my dog, the hound dog and him should go looking for his owner. The three dogs walked five miles down the road, crossing pavement where cars would drive. I could not find the dogs no matter how loud I called them. Finally, they just showed up and I found out later what they had done. A park ranger thankfully found them and the owners and told them what they had done.  All of the dogs went on immediate restriction.

Anyway, hopefully, if you have a pit bull, Doberman, rottweiler or other breed that has been discriminated against, you have to be calm, assertive, and stand up for your animal without resorting to nonsensical name-calling and adding to the attacks. There are nonviolent methods of communication available to learn, as well as healing methods.  Create peace and let your dog’s friendly behavior speak loudly for itself and others.Everywhere we go, my dog is loved (most of the time). On occasion, there are ignorant people who have been taught to be afraid of her. And I generally just try to steer clear of them. Why engage a nut case? I grew up in New York city and New Yorkers just ignore the crazies, for the most part.

We should definitely stand up and be counted against breed specific legislation. It’s like outlawing Chinese, Japanese, African Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, or any other human being because of a few bad apples. It’s bigotry, racism, and stems from fear and ignorance.
