A tale of two pit bulls

The unconscionable Belfast City Council created a Sophie’s Choice moment for Mrs. Chambers and her two dogs.

Below is my letter and the article about the situation… and I just found out this…

Dear Mr. Philpott aka pompous ass,

It is one thing for a person to be blind. But to pat yourself on the back for your own willful blindness, demonizing and discriminating policies against dogs and humans, which CREATED the “unpredictable dog” so that YOU could be right about how wrong you are is the height of hubris.

Gotta hand it to you. Gonna submit your statement to Ripley’s Believe it or Not, for the MOST dishonest statement EVER uttered by a horse’s rear. If YOU are an example of someone with the predictable gene, how do YOU sleep at night and what do you tell your children? Oh whoopee, killed another innocent dog and ruined another human life today worshipping at the altar of my hubris?

IN THE REAL WORLD, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN UNPREDICTABLE GENE.

 

Myth: Pit bulls are unpredictable; they can turn on anyone, even their owner, at any time.

FACT: Pit bulls are no more or less unpredictable than any other type of dog. Often, a person who claims that a dog is “unpredictable” simply doesn’t understand dog behavior

Unpredictability myth

Pit Bulls are generally very stable, happy dogs that love people. They are dogs. The only dogs that generally are unpredictable are dogs (of all breeds) that have a medical condition or have serious genetic-based behavior problems. Any dog, of any breed, that displays unpredictable behavior should be seen by a vet and a behaviorist to get to the root cause of the problem.

In the case of Mrs. Chambers dogs, the BCC is the root cause of the dogs problem. What is next, rounding up innocent children who are unpredictable, or how about all those rowdy unpredictable seniors or teenagers???

Mrs. Chambers was given a Sophie’s Choice moment, why? The BCC created the situation and the problem. The dog was fine until the BCC got your hands on her.  Catch 22 has got nothing on you.

 

Make NO mistake the world is watching Belfast City Council, USPCA and Belfast, Ireland because of the apparent obstinate stupidity that runs rampant in your city officials. You have had ample opportunities to LEARN from world renowned dog experts but have refused preferring to remain close-minded no matter the consequences.

You are cowards and bullies who prefer to kill and demonize and discriminate against dogs because you lack the moral fortitude and courage to hold human beings accountable. You prefer expediency over knowledge. Rather than learn from your mistakes, you just keep on killing, pretending you care about the public and are doing so in the name of public safety. What a load of hooey.

We will NOT forget Lennox and we will NOT forget Roxy and all of the other innocent blood on your hands.

And one day YOU will be prosecuted for the crimes YOU have committed, your cold, cruel, heartless inhumane  actions against both canines and humans.

Count me disgusted, along with your other 200,000+ fans aka Lennox Army.

Ending BSL 4 Lennox

Last week, I had an idea to create a replica stuffed animal dog that looked like Lennox  for Brooke after receiving a press release about a contest from a stuffed toy company who are having a contest. After dealing with their inept PR / Marketing firm who did not understand what I was asking, I officially gave up on them and looked around for another company.

I found one and I also found the Ride for Lennox below. It would be great to also do a ride or event on the west coast, what do you think ???  The cost of creating a replica stuffed dog to send to Brooke is approximately $850 for the cost and shipping. Let me know if you would be interested in participating in creating an event on the west coast similar to the drive on the east coast.

The replica of Lennox would be sent to Brooke as a keepsake along with other mementoes, letters and cards. And the ride would do fundraising for several pit bull rescues (perhaps Bad Rap, Our Pack, and Villalobos or smaller ones?) and raise awareness about BSL. Thanks for your input.

Her Update on Lennox:  The family have told me that Belfast City Council will still not answer the family’s calls and have consistently ignored their request to have Lennox’s collar returned to them, nor have they returned ‘Lennox’s ashes.’ There are many rumors circulating that Lennox died in a certain kennel location months before the BCC announced that he was euthanised and that the kennel panicked and were told by the BCC to get rid of everything Lennox related. These are still just rumors and should not be taken for hard fact until the truth is revealed. The family are ‘heartbroken’. The media hype around this case might have died down but I can assure you everything will be done to ensure that one day the truth is known. Please share this with everyone you know to keep Lennox’s name alive and to ensure that future dogs and their people do not have to suffer because of ignorance.

Individuals seeking their “15 minutes of fame” are constantly coming forward, claiming to have “inside information”, or just wanting to associate their own name with Lennox, in order to gain more celebrity status for themselves. It is a heartbreaking fact that major media outlets waited until the 11th hour before finally deciding to cover Lennox’s story. Where were they over the past 26 months, when they truly could have made a difference?

“Rumors are running rampant throughout social media about Lennox. There are claims from alleged kennel workers who have reported that Lennox had suffered a broken leg, broken teeth, was sick and malnourished. Lame reply to one of many emails I sent

 

 

Thank you for your recent email regarding Lennox.  I appreciate your sense of loss and understand your desire to contact us and a range of other agencies here in Northern Ireland to reverse the decision to destroy Lennox.

However, the NI Courts and Tribunals Service had no role in the decision and has no authority to intervene in such cases.

The NI Courts and Tribunals Service, as a Government department, is only responsible for providing administrative support to the courts in Northern Ireland.  The judiciary and the prosecuting authorities operate entirely independently from all Government departments and as a consequence we cannot consider complaints in respect of judicial decisions or the reasons underpinning them.   Similarly we have no authority to investigate complaints regarding prosecutorial decisions or evidence, including allegations such as perjury.

I am sorry that I am unable to personally address your correspondence but I am sure you will appreciate that we have been inundated with queries and emails regarding this case. I hope that this response helps to clarify the status of the Northern Ireland Courts & Tribunals Service in relation to this case.

The ride is being dedicated to Lennox and the Barnes family, the people who loved and fought to save his life. After a two year battle, Lennox was killed last week by the Belfast, Ireland council simply because he looked like a “pit bull.” We are having a stuffed Lennox made, and along each stop on the route, he will be handed off to the next group of riders, along with any notes of condolence and support to the Barnes family. After the ride, both the stuffed Lennox and all the cards and letters will be sent to the Barnes family to show that although we are separated by thousands of miles, we stand united with them in their fight, and we all mourn.


You don’t need to be part of an animal welfare organization to take part in the ride…you only need to have a desire to see BSL come to an end so that no dog and no family ever face the heartbreak and anguish of breed specific legislation again.
SOAR is organizing the troops for a vote on the Ontario pit bull ban in September, and using the bike rally as a fundraiser for their efforts to end BSL there. However, those taking parts in the states can simply use the ride to bring awareness to the fight against BSL, and to promote rescue and responsible dog ownership.

The ride is taking place from August 29 to September 2, 2012. It starts in Miami, FL and goes up the east coast finishing in Toronto, Canada.

If someone shows up at your door without a warrant, don’t just let them take your dog away, make them take it thru the legal process… defend your dog, resources in uk, dda watch,be courteous but don’t let them take your dog without a warrant…

Make them follow their own rules

Don’t sign papers, if you sign the papers, you are giving them permission to kill your dog, death warrant, don’t sign your rights away

Follow the rules, but make the authorities follow the rules too

With a US population of 311,591,917 (July 2011) and that year’s 15 dog attack fatalities, your chances of dying in a dog attack (from all breeds combined) is 1 in 20,772,794….almost 21 MILLION! One in over *30 MILLION* from a Pit-Bull or Pit-Mix.

STATISTICALLY in the UNITED STATES, GUESS WHAT BREED TOPPED THE LIST FOR BITES THAT CAUSED SERIOUS INJURIES TO PEOPLE? – Hospital statistics prove it was HUMANS. New York City alone has more people hospitalized with human bites per year than bites by every breed of dog combined in the whole world.
(Humans need to be banned, too.)

Justice for Lennox

Lennox was taken from the Barnes family home in Belfast by dog wardens two years ago after city council officials identified him as a pit bull-type dog, which is illegal in Northern Ireland. Lennox was an American bulldog Labrador mix not a pit bull. A 28-day deadline for legal appeals expired at midnight on July 10, 2012. The dog, who never hurt anyone, never bit anyone, was a family pet, was executed for looking like a pit bull after being taken from his family two years ago. The dog’s heartbroken owner, Caroline Barnes and her teenage daughter Brooke were denied the chance to say a final farewell. They were not even told that the dog was dead by the Belfast City Council who were determined to kill the dog, despite numerous other viable options to rehome the dog in the USA and italy. Now they will not return the body nor his collar to the family.

The test starts with Lennox on leash, held by a female Animal Control person, with both the Animal Control person and David Ryan (presumably a stranger to Lennox), a behaviorist, seated in chairs.  Lennox is being petted by the female.  Lennox is seated and seems to be relaxed.

…At no time did Lennox show even the most remote aggressive response to this stranger, Mr. Ryan.

Crosby goes on to compare evaluations of two other dogs…

…Note that my written evaluations of Lennox, “JoJo”, and Helo never use language such as “the most dangerous dog I have ever seen” or any of the other nonsense that the BCC’s evaluator has used.  Such emotional language has no place in a behavioral assessment.  My evaluations never mention the dogs’ appearance, as physical appearance has absolutely no bearing on behavior.

Lennox certainly got short shrift in this incident.  The evaluator that the Court relied upon is clearly unqualified to assess temperament and behavior.  He doesn’t even have the credentials to assess adherence to a breed standard.

Lennox, on a leash, being tested for temperament. The leash is held by a woman alleged to be Sandie Lightfoot, the dog warden responsible for the chain of events that led to Lennox’s murder. The man in the video is reportedly David Ryan, a dog behavior expert hired by the family to do an assessment of Lennox without any prejudice. Ryan was one of two dog behavior experts who examined Lennox, and who both testified to the court that the dog showed no sign of aggression.

In the video, the dog is relaxed and friendly. He sits on command, and waits for a treat. Several times, he attempts to lick both people in a visibly friendly and playful manner.

The video is dated March 15, 2011. This is long after both Lightfoot and the Belfast City Council had alleged that Lennox was aggressive towards people. The video shows no signs of aggression. Moreover, Lightfoot, who by this time certainly had interacted with Lennox several times, shows no nervousness at being around the dog, at all.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson turned to social media in a doomed, last-minute attempt at intervention. ”

As a dog lover I am very unhappy with the outcome of this case,” he tweeted. “Spoke to Lord Mayor about Lennox. Suggested BCC (Belfast City Council) should seriously look at re-homing option. Why exercise the order if there’s an alternative?”

“I want to know why Belfast City council won’t give Lennox’s body back to the family and why they won’t even return his collar to Brooke even though they were asked to do so by the family so that she could have something to remember him by. There is something corrupt going on and an independent review of the council’s actions in this case needs to be done. I want answers. Why not return the body? Was Lennox even still alive and what physical condition was he in at the time of his death? We already have evidence of his poor physical state during Sarah Fisher’s behavioral evaluation of him last year. Hair loss, sores on his body,a hurt neck and damaged paw. The council have many questions they need to answer because I think they have something to hide.”

” I am so disgusted and want everyone to know how low Belfast City Council have stooped. The Barnes family heard about the death of their beloved dog through me because I had been told by a source at BBC Radio Ulster. After what the council put the family through they didn’t even have the decency to inform the family first before everyone else know. Someone involved in this mess needs to lose their job. If this is the way they represent their citizens then Belfast beware. Belfast City Council should hang their heads for the shameful and insensitive way they have handled this. Heartless doesn’t even begin to describe the people surrounding this case. Appalling and I can assure you, this will NEVER be forgotten!”

An Italian minister even offered Lennox a home and asked for clemency. 200,000 signatures signed a petition supporting a reprieve…

I am asking for an investigation of the Belfast City Council regarding the handling of the Lennox the dog case. There are too many questions left unanswered. Too many actions that are questionable. Lennox had offers of sanctuary from some of the best-known dog advocates in the world. Dog trainer Victoria Stilwell went to Ireland trying in vain to meet with the Belfast City Council (BCC) or anyone with authority who would listen. She generously offered to pay all costs to re-home him in the United States and to take full responsibility for him for the rest of his life. The BCC refused to communicate with her, as they had refused dialogue with so many others before. They were allegedly, breathtakingly heartless and cruel to Lennox, and his family, and to good people throughout the world who tried to engage them positively. Their callousness climaxed in their refusal to grant the Barnes family the chance to say goodbye, or collect Lennox’s body and give him a proper burial.  The BCC has shown a complete lack of  human decency in their dealings with the public and the Barnes family. The BCC employees have stonewalled the public, made animal sounds on the phone the day Lennox was killed, hung up on people concerned about Lennox, threatened dog experts and tried to sue them for speaking the truth.

We are left with more questions than answers. Why couldn’t unbiased behaviorists assess the dog? Why wouldn’t they let anyone, including the family, see the dog — up to and after his death? Were they abusing him? Had their lack of care led to his failing health or premature death? Had they violated the law and killed him before the appeal period was up? These were the only things that made sense in the face of a wall of silence and a bolted door. We have just begun to make our voices heard and we will win.

We are NOT going away any time soon. The more that the BCC shuts us out, the more we will demand answers and an investigation into the BCC.

4. Why was the same judge allowed to sit on the bench for appeal. He should have recused himself. He was obviously biased.

5. Where was common sense and “…Justice tempered by mercy…”.

6. Why wasn’t the family allowed to visit during this two year period

7. Why weren’t they allowed one last visit?

8. Why couldn’t they have the body; Lennox could no longer pose a threat to the public. He was dead.

9. Why wasn’t his collar given to Brooke.

10. It has been hinted at by noteworthy officials and well renowned individuals that this was a vindictive campaign against Caroline Barnes because she dared speak out against BSL laws.

These are just a few questions and observations we have. There are many more. The actions of the Belfast City Council are irredeemable in the World’s eyes. Just this side of heaven is a beautiful place called “The Rainbow Bridge”.

When a beloved pet dies, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge.
It is a land of meadows, hills and colorful
valleys with lush green grass.
There is always plenty of food, water and sunshine
and our little friends are warm and comfortable.

There all the animals who had been ill and old
are young again, restored to health and vigor.
Those who have been hurt or maimed are made whole and strong.
The animals play all day and are happy and content
but there is one thing missing.
They each miss someone who they left behind.

Someone very special who loved and cared for them on earth.
Then the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up.
The bright eyes are intent and the body quivers with excitement.
Suddenly that one runs away from the group
flying over the green grass, running faster and faster.

You have been spotted.
And when you and your special friend meet again,
you take them in your arms and embrace.
Happy kisses rain upon your face. Your hands caress your beloved friend.

Official Statement From Lennox’s Family:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all again for your messages of support. We are sorry to say at the present time Belfast city council seem to be intent on killing our boy. Despite previous assurances otherwise, we have been denied the opportunity to say goodbye. We have also been told that we cannot collect his body and bring Len home. We have been informed however that we will receive “some” ashes in the mail.

Belfast City Council, what utter arrogance, hubris, disrespect and cruelty to tell this family the above. These are NOT human beings.

as far as I am concerned the BCC are heartless, cruel animal abusers.  How many opportunities they were given to DO THE RIGHT THING but they are bound and determined to punish an innocent dog and a sick, disabled child and family. How vindictive can these bureaucrats be?

More than 200,000 people worldwide, celebrities, expert dog trainers and others have all asked for clemency, written numerous articles, letters and emails, made countless phone calls, all to fall on DEAF EARS.

Why have numerous requests to rehome Lennox been ignored?  What would it have cost the BCC/Northern Ireland government? NOTHING. They could have saved face and DONE THE RIGHT THING.

But apparently NONE of that matters. Stubborn, hard hearted people who paid someone to condemn an innocent and who also refused the dog medical care. The dog was in good health and never harmed anyone. In the BCC’s isolated cell, the dog lost fur, sustained numerous injuries, besides being kept alone from his family WITHOUT PROPER and BASIC CARE.

All of our worse fears are confirmed. That Lennox must be in such horrendous near death condition that is the ONLY reason that the BCC could possibly have for HIDING him away from the public.  Victoria Stilwell and Sarah Fisher are RIGHT THERE now in Belfast awaiting to take Lennox to the USA and the BCC REFUSES to meet with them.

The only conclusion one can assess is out of this is that if Lennox were to be turned over to Victoria Stilwell, Cesar Milan, the Italian government, Jeff Coltenback or numerous others who offered their homes and to PAY for ALL EXPENSES, someone (s) would be witness to what the BCC have done to this dog.

And for the sake of NO ONE being a witness to the extent of the cruelty of the BCC, the dog is going to be murdered.

What a hateful bunch of zombies, no heart, no soul, just cruel inhuman beings.

They deserve to be held accountable for their crimes against this dog and this family.

Tonight at 10 pm there will be a candlelight vigil for Lennox in Belfast, Ireland.

Latest word from Victoria Stilwell is that the BCC has not responded to her requests to meet with her.

On Sunday, she told msnbc.com in an emailed statement: (Victoria stilwell)
“Despite my repeated public and private requests for a meeting with the Belfast City Council to discuss positive alternatives to the euthanasia of Lennox, they have inexplicably refused to even discuss these possibilities with me, the family or their legal team. Although I’ve previously given the benefit of the doubt about the BCC’s motives, I now fear that their collective decision-making has been clouded by personal and potentially vindictive reasoning while exhibiting an unreasonable obstinance to even exploring positive solutions. I sincerely hope they relent and accept my offer of an all-expenses paid, face-saving rehoming process for this poor dog.”

Lennox, a much loved family companion, was seized two years ago, by council officials in Belfast City Council as an alleged “pit bull type”, he has been ordered by the courts to be destroyed and this decision was tragically upheld by the Court of Appeal NI.
Lennox has never harmed anyone; he has been prosecuted based on his appearance-for looking the wrong shape and size under breed specific legislation in NI.
Her Majesty the Queen and all senior politicians are urgently requested to use the Royal Prerogative of Mercy, which we understand starts where the law finishes and applies where a conviction and sentence has been arrived at; Lennox’s family and thousands of supporters worldwide plead for mercy.
We understand that The Royal Prerogative has been applied in NI, being used in the past by the then Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson and that a Judicial Review IN THE HIGH COURT OF JUSTICE IN NORTHERN IRELAND McGeough’s (Terence) Application[2012] NIQB 11 also examined this power as did a Judicial Review (EWHC 3102 Admin) on 17th Dec. 2008 in the case of Michael Shields before the High Courts of Justice in London. We understand that it should only be exercised where no other remedies exist and that the effect of a pardon is not to quash the conviction but releases the recipient from “all pains, penalties and punishments whatsoever that from the said conviction may ensure”.
Please, we beg you, to intervene, order a stay of execution; whilst you investigate an application for clemency and any and all other legal routes to enable Lennox to be exported out of Northern Ireland. Failing that, please insist on a stay of execution so that a clear and transparent investigation is carried out in this case so that this dog is not wrongfully put to death and doubts regarding his current condition are set at rest.

As a dog owner, I fret because I rescued my dog and love my dog. How can anyone with a heart not be affected by the fate of Lennox????
There are so many disturbing aspects to this case.
Numerous articles like the one below have been surfacing where dogs who have actually bit people have been given reprieve that it really strikes at the heart. Why has Lennox been singled out for punishment then?????  A loved dog of a disabled girl who never hurt a soul.  Why have all of the requests to rehome Lennox gone unanswered????
if this pup can be given a muzzling and retraining order for having bitten, then there is no excuse for the councils death sentence on Lennox and I don’t accept the opinion of someone paid to give evidence against him, especially not since dog experts who I respect have given opposite opinions of Lennox.
An illegal fighting dog was spared. This dog was found running around freely in the streets without a collar or lead.  Yet this dog was not put into jail nor does this dog await death.
A young disabled girl’s heart is broken and many hundreds of thousands of people’s hearts around the world have spent more nights and days like this worrying, fretting, wondering what to do to help this family who have showed tremendous courage and dignity despite this ongoing ordeal.
Brooke, the young disabled girl, deserves to have her dog back, her bestest friend in the whole wide world.
Please give Brooke her dog back or at the very least allow Victoria Stilwell, Cesar Milan, Jeff Coltenback or any of the other requests to rehome Lennox safely with dog experts at their OWN EXPENSE happen.
The world deserves the truth. And Lennox and his family deserve justice and healing. They and we have already been through too much heartache.
LET LENNOX LIVE.
Pardon him. He has done nothing wrong.
Brooke and the other children of the world are watching with their parents and dog lovers like myself are, too.

apparently the ONLY PERSON ON THE PLANET it seems who can pardon Lennox and allow him to live is Minister of Agriculture, Michelle O’Neil. Here is her direct email address to use of the weekend.
