Should homeless people have dogs?

Today, we will be discussing this topic not presented here before. A little break from our usual kibble because it is important on a personal level as well as impacts EVERY ONE OF US here in America. And many of us who have dogs.

Somewhere on Facebook, someone asked the question should homeless people have dogs? I was outraged. How in the world is it that people seek to take away every tiny bit left of what a person WHO HAS LOST EVERYTHING HAS???  Yet, this is the attitude all over America.

Homeless people deserve nothing, no dogs, no pets, no homes, no help, no nothing. Because they are lazy, crazy, moochers who do not want a job or a home and besides, it is their own fault. There is something WRONG with those people so let’s punish the heck out of them. Bans, laws, ordinances are EVERYWHERE (See below).

Yet, more than half of the 350+ women over the age of 50 in the Monterey Bay peninsula without homes HAVE dogs and still, in “dog friendly” Carmel, they are told to get rid of their mutts. As if it is the dog’s fault that THERE IS NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING and very LOW WAGES. And 49% of Seniors are Living in Poverty in the USA.

12118794_1644348349187009_4963638979493103735_n

Women live longer than men, make less money than men, and get less Social Security retirement funds. Women also make easy prey for predators. Especially sick and elderly women. But hey, those bag ladies must have DONE SOMETHING WRONG to deserve living on the street. Some jerk on Facebook actually said something to that effect to me, that these people did not save up enough money so it’s their own fault.

Nope, the lazy, drunk, drug addicted, crazy people (it is easy to see how AFTER you lose your home and are treated like a nonexistent go away piece of trash that you THEN become mentally ill and / or start drinking or taking drugs) is a myth and stereotype used by some so that NOTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE OR CHANGED.

Now, women without homes need dogs for protection and companionship. Plus, it has been shown that people without homes will feed their pets BEFORE they feed themselves. People without homes Deserve EVERYTHING YOU DO, a home, a bad, a place to BE, food, health care and a DOG/Pet of their own choice. How DARE anyone tell another person what they should or not have.

8 reasons why homeless people deserve a dog

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/danielle-wolffe/8-reasons-homeless-people_b_6562446.html

I should write 8 reasons why homeless people deserve HOMES …

Just ask Richard Gere the actor what it is like to be homeless. He did a movie Time Out of Mind in New York where he was dressed up as a homeless man.

“I could see people from two blocks away decide to avoid me. Whether they were conscious of it or not, they were like: I know that guy. And they filled in all the other things that one needs to know to have a reaction. They decided, OK, this guy’s gonna be asking me for money, and I don’t really want to give him any money. In fact I don’t want to make any contact with him…”

http://www.salon.com/2015/09/08/richard_gere_on_playing_a_homeless_man_in_nyc_i_could_see_people_from_two_blocks_away_decide_to_avoid_me/

Now, Pets of the Homeless, a nonprofit organization in Carson City, Nevada has a different attitude and idea. They actually help to Feed the dogs of people without homes, all over America. And help to get vet care, spay and neuter and other care plus support shelters allowing pets. While I DO NOT think that shelters are the Answer to End Homelessness, because warehousing people is NOT an answer. There is NO PRIVACY nor DIGNITY in shelters. Plus, too much money is spent on salaries and buildings and not enough ON THE PEOPLE WHO NEED HOMES.

People should have HOMES. Their OWN HOMES. And some communities are creating tiny home villages and apartments and low income housing for seniors, but not enough to meet demand. And the thing is that taxpayers are paying THREE TIMES MORE per person per year to NOT HOUSE people. That is right. And some states Utah, Oregon, and others are ahead of the curve in providing HOMES and apartments for homeless people.

12032197_912567522168773_8084182537369382506_n

AND a 9 year old girl in Washington is building tiny homes and growing food and giving them all to the people in her community in need. If she can do this, then why can’t ADULTS with MONEY do the same ????

Now onto the personal aspect of all of this:

In 1996, I went through a divorce, lost a job, three crucial family members passed on leaving me a virtual orphan, was rear ended in a car accident, and then was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and told there was no cure, just grin and bear it (all of the pain and horribleness).  Called this my Job experience.

And thought that was the worst year EVER.

Until this one hit and here are just a few of the highlights…

At the beginning of January, I finally had a home to move into, for ten days. Person turned out to be a very scary crackpot, to say the least.

At the end of January, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Not having a home was a bit of a problem (a BIG problem) to having surgery.

But then the newspaper, doggie mamas came through BIG TIME and so did BADRAP and I was given a few weeks breathing space to get through the surgery.

It was crucial for us to have a home after surgery, a place to rest, heal and recover. Instead, I moved into a place with someone with a dog who had an agenda, to steal the Breast Cancer Support Group money that was given to me. We lived there two weeks. Happy recovery, not.

Decided to move back to Carson City, Nevada, because it is cheaper and perhaps I could get a place of my own. Did not really find one so I moved in with a cowgirl and her three Jack Russells. Seemed all very positive, hot springs, Cici learned how to use a doggie door and became part of a dog pack, and then the doggie poop hit the fan when the cow girl decided instead of allowing me time to rest and recover, it was time for me to become her housekeeper with lists of 20 things to do every day. What?

Desperate for rest and my own space and place, I accepted the offer of a very kind and generous doggie donor of a camper for Cici and I to live in. A mobile home on the road. Ok, what did I know about such campers? And with a very light budget, plus a bunch of campers having passed through our paws, we got a popup camper that has to be cranked, unhitched and has caused me to become unhinged hauling it around, decimating bushes and walls and other items in its way. (It really should be mandatory for people to have lessons on how to drive these things BEFORE they buy one).

Not knowing where to go or what to do again, I headed to the 101 from Reno. A little time with the trees, perhaps? Oh yes, there were fires, smoky twisty windy roads, lots of road work, 100+ degree temperatures and 30 minutes with the trees. What a trip. And no place affordable to park the camper.

Back to Monterey, where we were living for five years. And it seems to have become totally worse for people without homes. Bans, ordinances, all terrible decimating peoples rights.

imagine if you were at risk of being thrown into jail every time YOU went to sleep, ate food, went to the bathroom or TRIED TO SURVIVE in hot or cold weather, in the rain, outside in the elements.
What would you do? What would your mother, sister, granny, or aunt do?
It is not only unconstitutional, illegal and/or immoral to have these bans in place all over the USA, but it is cruel and unusual punishment according to the Department of Justice.

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/10/no-camping-and-other-laws-that-sneakily-push-the-homeless-away/412216/

But hey, too many cities are still putting these laws on the books. Stealing people’s possessions to the tune of $250,000 in Salinas (why build affordable housing when you can take away what little someone has, charge them to get it back and profit off of their misery?). No overnight parking or camping in Marina (Just because everyone else in the area is jumping off the roof, so the Mayor decided to go ahead and be part of the doggie pack and make it a criminal offense to sleep in his town). Do not sit and lie down in public in Monterey. Yup. You heard me. It is also illegal to FEED people in public in 33 cities across America.

In Carmel. we got a very hard wake-up call there which I will tell you about in a minute.

We went back and forth between Monterey and Paso Robles, where we discovered a few resources, like a place to sleep at night in the Jeep not the camper.

I did not mention the fact that I have tried to sell the camper and got offered half of what was paid for it which would leave me with NOTHING to buy a new camper with. The kind of camper we need is the kind that is easy to manage, that we can pull over by the side of the road, open a door and go to sleep.

Nor that I was robbed, scammed and had to call the police to get the scammer out of the camper (we popped up for three nights at a hot springs in Paso Robles). It is rustic, to say the least. And the hot springs pool itself very good for the healing of the body.

Well, I also did not say anything about the guy who smashed the Jeep and camper into a fire truck.

Need I go on?  (How am I still standing????)  well, am barely hobbling. My feet hurt so bad.

And just last week, I found out that the dearest person in my life is now in the hospital, just had an operation and is very very ill.

Was in and out of the ER all October where they told me I have blood clots on my lungs. And the doctors take one look at me and dismiss my condition because well, after all, I am fat and without a home, so that makes me a nobody and certainly not a person of worth who deserves health care.  Bye bye bye.

Plus, there is more that I cannot even discuss or go into.  Remember, I told you ONLY the highlights.

Now onto yesterday…

I woke up from sleeping in my Jeep after too many nights doing the same feeling sicker and sicker. And since the ER doctors have the attitude mentioned above, getting treated with disdain is not exactly what I seek so I just left after the social worker gave me the usual BS.

Banging your head against the wall time and time and time again is not as much fun as it supposed to be.

Well, I was in Carmel and went over to the Starbucks. I could hardly walk my feet felt like burning hot coals and I was barely able to make it to the Jeep, get Cici. I needed help feeding her. I had food and a bowl in the car but could not manage the supplies and her. I let her walk, I could barely walk with her so I sat down. And felt dizzy and like I was going to faint.

I saw someone I had seen there before, who had seemed like a dog friend. And asked her to please help me feed Cici, go to the car, get her food and bowl. She ignored me and walked away. Ok. So then a guy came along and I asked him the same. He kept right on going to his car. As if I did not exist. He heard me but just kept on walking. So then I asked another woman and the same lack of response.

At which point, I lost what little left I had of sanity and started crying and yelling. Of course, these kind folks in doggie paradise went right inside to tell Starbucks on me because they could not ignore me, me and my doggie dilemma had nothing to do with them, was not their problem, and Cici and I were interfering with their coffee time. Someone came out and told me to leave. I told her that I could barely walk. We had a few more choice words and she said that if I did not leave, she would call the police. I told her to please go ahead and call 911 and whoever else. She did.

Then we had a big party.

In the midst of all the chaos of fire rescue, paramedics and police, who were all asking me the same questions making my already dizzy head spin off its axis, the kindness man showed up. He took care of Cici, fed her, walked her and offered to take her for me if / when I went to the hospital.

Ahhh, the light at the end of this very long tunnel. ONE doggie lover left in Carmel.

ONE kind stranger. No, there were two others. A gal from Seattle, who helped me and a worker at Starbucks who was leaving, gave me her breakfast sandwich and told me that they should NEVER have treated me like they did. Well duh.  Other people who were very very kind to me recently include the manager of Panera’s Bread in Sand City, the church we held at Starbucks in Pasos Robles with Sandi, Linda and the other gals, and several more who have answered the call to help a ‘friend’ in need.

ANYONE with a brain, eyes to see, and ears to HEAR could SEE that here was a person in CRISIS who was SICK and needed assistance. Well, why be kind to that person when you can deny, ignore, or police and threaten them ???

That is it, America. The sad truth of what is happening EVERY DAY, EVERY HOUR, EVERY MINUTE to 3 million PEOPLE across America. Good, decent, hard working Americans, too.

Like James Worley, Homeless Lives Matter on Facebook and Twitter,

an honest man who found a purse filled with $1,700 and went out of his way, while homeless himself, to return the money to its rightful owner.

Like 82 year old Kelli who lived in her van for three years. Elderly women, single moms with kids, veterans, and hard working people not making enough money to afford the ever increasing rents in every city.  People in San Francisco have to make $175,000 to pay $4,500 a month in rent. San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have declared emergencies in their respective cities in regard to the overwhelming number of people somehow living without homes.

http://www.montereyherald.com/article/NF/20150124/NEWS/150129839

WE ARE IN CRISIS, America.

Yes, our furry friends deserve homes and SO DO THEIR OWNERS and FRIENDS !!!!

Millions of dollars are raised for our doggies and KITTIES and they deserve the Love and Care AND what about the people who are their families??? Do they not deserve HOMES and a Helping Hand Up, so that they can take care of their pets and not have to choose between food and rent or health care and their dog ????

According to AARP, Approximately 19 million low-income 50+ households in America cannot afford their housing costs and/or live in inadequate housing.

According to Medicare, nearly half of all seniors (48%) live in poverty today, especially in: DC (59%); California (56%).

This was the article written about Cici and I in January 2015:

http://www.montereyherald.com/social-affairs/20150228/homeless-at-65-not-the-life-former-journalist-imagined

We really need a HOME NOW. And I am asking if you would be willing to help us get the camper / home we need asap? It is imperative, life vs death.  Any amount of donation, sharing will help, thanks.

Hounds at Heavenly

Powder…cold, wet, white and fun to make snowballs and snowpeople with as well as to ski on. Our furry friends with four paws like snow as much as people do. And Lake Tahoe (north and south) is a perfect place to hit the snow trails and resorts. Lazy, couch potato puppies can sit by the fire while active animals can hike in the fluffy white stuff during the winter.

The mountains are alive with the sound of dogs frolicking in the snow. Taking your dog skiing might require some patience, practice and coordination. (Me, the only time I ever went skiing in my life, I failed at the bunny slopes in NY but there are plenty of people who ski and who knows, maybe Fido is a natural born skier).

Laughlin & Mesquite Pet Friendly

You may visit Las Vegas on a regular basis. But there are a couple of other cities nearby that you might consider going to and taking your pooch with you.

Laughlin is about 1-1.2 hour south of Las Vegas , 90 miles south of Las Vegas,  Located along the Colorado River, Laughlin offers all types of water activities including camping, boating, jet skiing, fishing, etc.  The casinos that line the river offer live entertainment and casino gaming. And the atmosphere is of a small town rather than a large city. If your dog loves the water, this may be a fun place to visit. Probably the best time to visit is fall, spring or winter. Summertime is HOT HOT HOT outside, even hotter than Las Vegas.

Outdoor activities

Dogs are allowed on some of the water taxis, depending upon the Captain and the dogs. Dogs are also allowed to walk on leash on the RiverWalk and at the beaches.

Dogs are allowed in the Lake Mead National Recreational Area, but must be kept on a leash (not to exceed a length of 6 feet).  Never leave dogs in the car as temperatures can reach 130 F. Pick up after your pet and don’t leave any trash along the trail.  There is a bathroom, and trash cans can be found in the parking lot at the entrance to the trail.

Grapevine Canyon is located south of Spirit Mountain, which is a designated wilderness area in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  It is about 15 minutes by car from Harrah’s. Spirit Mountain and the surrounding canyons are considered sacred grounds of the Yuman tribes including the Mohave, Hualapai, Yavpai, Havasupai, Quechan, Paipai and Maricopa.  The main attractions along the Grapevine Canyon trail are the petroglyphs, rock drawings created by Prehistoric Indians.

Grapevine Canyon is accessible from the Christmas Tree Pass Road, located off State Highway 163, six miles west of Davis Dam at mile marker 13. Turn right onto the dirt road. Two miles from the highway, a short spur road to the left leads into the parking area for Grapevine Canyon. Remember to carry plenty of water. Be sure to remove all your trash from the area. Remember this is a sacred area, take only pictures and memories, leave only footprints – on the trail! Source: www.nps.gov

Mesquite is north of Las Vegas and the weather is a bit cooler. There are fun places to visit along the way from Vegas to Mesquite. Also, you can easily drive to Utah from Mesquite. It is a small town atmosphere, too and lots of retirees live here.

I have stayed at the Virgin River and Cici may or may not have been with me during one visit (I cannot remember)… The hotel rooms are regular motel fare and affordably priced.  We also stayed at a local motel that was expensive. There were lots of places around town to walk Cici and parks to picnic.

holiday pet friendly lodging

Perhaps you are going to visit family and friends this Thanksgiving and have all your arrangements made. If not, and you want to take your furry friends with you and are looking for some pet friendly possibilities, you might consider visiting one of the places or venues below…

Note: Cici and I have NOT visited any of these venues so we cannot recommend whether they are truly pet friendly with Dogitude or simply pet tolerant…If you go, please let us know. We have visited various Red Roof Inns and can say that they are pet friendly, in that they do NOT charge fees for pets and they do not offer amenities. They are affordable and do NOT limit pets by breed or weight.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire is considered a very “pet friendly” state; and has many lodging places that

roll out the red carpet for dogs at any time of year. Here are some

suggestions:

The Inns and Spa at Mill Falls http://millfalls.com/index.htm,

Meredith, NH – This vacation destination on the shores of Lake

Winnipesaukee, has all the perks of a pet-friendly environment that

allows guests to not only bring their furry friend along, but also

provides several amenities :

Pet Friendly Rooms and Service at Church Landing and The Inn at Mill

Falls <http://millfalls.com/inns/pet_friendly.htm> :

Upon checkin at the Mill Falls Inns, pets are greeted with a special

dog or cat treat and a personalized sign for being such a “good boy or girl” on

the trip. Pets and guests are then shown to a room that comes equipped

with a special pet bed, a water and food bowl, a blanket to sit on if

they are allowed on the couch, a kitty litter box for cat-friendly rooms

and a special bag filled with treats and a map of the walking trails

that Fido can meet and play with new friends. After a day filled with

either swimming in Lake Winnipesaukee or walking along its beautiful

shores, both pet and owner can book a massage appointment at the Cascade

Spa <http://millfalls.com/cascade_spa/index.htm> at Church Landing!

Small animal practitioner DeAnne M. Racz provides soothing cat or dog

specific massages. In addition, pet sitting and veterinary information

are both readily available at the front desk.

*While The Inns charge a $25 fee per pet for pet specific rooms, $10 of

that fee goes to the New Hampshire Humane Society to aid in the rescue

and care of animals that have been abused, neglected or abandoned. The

Inns and Spa at Mill Falls have contributed a total of $8,990 to the New

Hampshire Humane Society since 2008.

The Lazy Dog Inn http://www.lazydoginn.com/, Chocorua, New Hampshire

was Voted “Most Pet Friendly B&B in North America,” this inn provides guests and their dogs traditional New England comforts in a historically rich 160-year-old farmhouse. offers accommodations with the carefree ambiance of visiting a well

loved relative. It is located just through the covered bridge in Jackson

right on the property. Their understanding and interest in dogs led them

For dog-owners, the fully stocked kitchens provide everything they will need to create a full Turkey Day spread. Plus forget the olive oil, or need to grab an extra bottle of wine? The General Store in Cabin No. 1 has plenty of basics that may get left behind. Plus, for those dogs that want to wear their Iron Springs pride, there are branded collars and leashes available in the store as well.

For those after less of an “out-of-town” stay, the Woodmark Hotel, Yacht Club & Spa http://www.thewoodmark.com/in Kirkland, WA, has plush accommodations that cater to four-footed and two-footed guests alike. Upon check-in to a dog-friendly room, there will be a full spread waiting for the traveled pups to use throughout the stay, including a cushy pet bed, food and water dishes, bottled water, leash, tennis ball and doggy biscuits. There’s even a walking map to take the pup on a waterfront stroll along Lake Washington, right outside the hotel doors. Making the whole holiday even easier, the hotel restaurant, Bin on the lake http://binonthelake.com/, is serving a decadent Thanksgiving Dinner with a side of spectacular views. And finally, don’t forget to pet Woody on your way in and out! The resident Labradoodle is Director of Guest Satisfaction and loves a good rub on the head.

Life Savers

A place giving temporary protection from bad weather or danger.

that is the definition of Shelter…

Ideally, shelters should be places, way stations where pets get the assistance they need to get adopted. Instead, way too many of them are killing factories … where innocent pets come in and never make it out alive, where animals are killed in horrific inhumane ways, where shelter workers are cruel, insensitive and downright mean and don’t deserve to work with innocent pets…shelters should be saving lives not ending them.  Shelters should be in the LIFE SAVING business. How can WE turn this around???

Imagine…

Follow the money… and Greed… in a country where War is Good Business and Greed is Standard, is it any wonder that homeless and poor people and animals are cruelly disposed of  by the Money/Profit at ALL Cost crowd?  But it DOES NOT have to continue to be this way. There are people making a difference and saving lives.

An interview with Nathan Winograd

As Director of Operations for the San Francisco SPCA, Winograd was instrumental in advancing some of the most progressive shelter programs in the nation, and helped establish the first No Kill city. By making a commitment to stop the killing as Executive Director for the Tompkins County (NY) SPCA, he put programs in place that took Tompkins County No Kill.

In your experience, what’s the most critical step to build a No Kill community?
If you ask 100 animal welfare professionals this question, all 100 would say spay/neuter. But all 100 would be wrong. That is not to say that high volume, low cost sterilization services aren’t important, they are. In fact, they are crucial. But that is not why most dogs and cats are currently being killed in shelters. It isn’t “pet overpopulation.” What we are actually suffering from as a nation, what is actually killing a high number of animals, is an over-population of shelter directors mired in the failed philosophies of the past and complacent with the status quo. We know how to stop the killing, but many shelter directors refuse to implement the No Kill model. As a result, a widespread, institutionalized culture of lifesaving is not possible without wholesale regime change in shelters and national animal protection groups, replacing them with compassionate leaders who reject killing as a method for achieving results.

http://www.pawschicago.org/animal-advocacy/q-a-with-nathan-winograd/

Simply, shelters are not adopting out enough animals… it is NOT that animals are unwanted, too many (overpopulation) nor is it that there are not enough homes/adopters…

America’s approximately 4,000 animal shelters are currently adopting out more than 4 million pets per year – between 2 and 3 per shelter, per day. By simply increasing that by an additional 2 pets per shelter, per day, the 3 million healthy and treatable pets who currently lose their lives in shelters will be saved.

http://www.maddiesfund.org/Resource_Library/The_Shelter_Pet_Project_By_the_Numbers.html

A Kentucky community recently celebrated its second No Kill year. A Canadian community reduced killing by 70%. A New Zealand animal control shelter finished the year with a 96% rate of lifesaving. Another in Australia surpasses even that. A municipal shelter in Nevada is saving 95% of all animals, even with a per capita intake rate that is four times the rate of Los Angeles, seven times the rate of New York City, and over twice the national average. How can you know whether shelters are truly doing all they can to save the life of animals? The answer is the “90% Rule.”

http://www.pawschicago.org/about-no-kill/when-is-no-kill-truly-no-kill/

Shelters that work with their local animal rescue organizations, create FUN adoption events, provide low cost/free spay/neutering clinics, photograph animals in a positive way, obtain media coverage on a regular basis, provide necessary services for the animals to make them adoptable, and do EVERYTHING possible to Save Lives and make ADOPTION their FIRST PRIORITY are what is needed. How can YOU support YOUR local shelter to SAVE MORE LIVES???

Great Example of Shelter with HIGH Adoption Rate (low kill rate)

http://www.nevadahumanesociety.org/

I love that they used the Occupy movement in their ad… Occupy Hearts and Homes…

And their INTENTION and goal is to become a No Kill Shelter. Bonney Brown, the Executive Director, I believe, used to work for Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

http://www.nevadahumanesociety.org/pdf/news/NHS_American-Dog-Magazine.pdf

Good buddies: Grizzled truckers transport rescued animals to safety

In the face of animal overpopulation and abuse, volunteers take matters into their own hands

According to the American Humane Association, about 3.7 million stray and unwanted animals are put to sleep in U.S. shelters each year.

Operation Roger always needs more truck drivers and volunteers to provide layover homes for animals in transit. To get involved, visit the organization’s website or email operationroger01@yahoo.com.

Pilots N Paws always needs pilots to transport animals to safe situations. General-aviation pilots who are interested in helping out should visit the organization’s website or email info@pilotsnpaws.org.

To help support Susanne Spirit’s Musical “Trucking” Dog Adoption Program, visit her website or her Facebook page, or email info@musicaltruckindogs.com.

the big animal organizations who are supposed to be protecting animals such as the ASPCA, Humane Society of the US and others need to get on board with creative, working solutions for increasing adoption rates at shelters, SAVING LIVES and becoming NO KILL not standing in the way of PROGRESS.

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=7390

in the world of the ASPCA, saving lives is “extremist” but subjecting the animals to daily neglect, cruelty, and the ultimate form of violence—killing—is to be defended and protected.

…the kind of concerted effort to fight No Kill across the country that the ASPCA takes requires people. It isn’t Ed Sayres sitting alone at his keyboard. He and other leaders of the ASPCA may be calling the shots, but the people of the ASPCA are implementing his regressive policies. Ed Sayes may have ordered Oreo killed, but the people of the ASPCA killed her. Ed Sayres may have ordered Oreo’s Law to be defeated, but the people of the ASPCA walked the halls of the state capitol in Albany and lobbied legislators to vote “No.” Ed Sayres may have ordered the ASPCA to oppose No Kill in San Francisco, but the people of the ASPCA testified against it in front of the San Francisco Animal Welfare Commission. Ed Sayres may have ordered sick kittens sent to New York City’s medieval and abusive pound, but it is ASPCA employees who delivered them there to be killed.

Despite the millions hoarded in their bank accounts raised through emotional commercials that prey on animal lovers by promoting the fiction that they will use donations to save animals, the ASPCA has a long sordid history of not only fighting reform efforts nationwide, but of neglecting the needs of the animals suffering in the shelter down the street, even sending animals to be killed there.

…the ASPCA is committed to killing, to protecting killers, to defending abusers if they happen to run shelters, and to hiding abuse within its own facility as the ASPCA did in trying to protect a veterinarian who kicked a dog to death? Regardless of whether it was run by Roger Caras who called No Kill a “hoax” and a “cancer,” or Larry Hawk, who continued that legacy, or Ed Sayres, who counts over 35,000 dead New York animals as his legacy, there is simply no evidence that the ASPCA “can do better than this” because, when it comes to ending the systematic killing of animals in U.S. shelters, they never have. In fact, they have never even tried, not since the death of their remarkable founder over 120 years ago.

Yes, I am an Extremist according to this…and am also horrified by this info. Had no idea, makes me sick, sick, sick … you would think that people who work with animals would LOVE them and want to save them, protect them, take care of them. Just makes me ill to think that these big organizations all they want to do is kill, kill, kill.  I also wonder if it is Follow the Money…

How MUCH MONEY do they get to Keep on KILLING as opposed to SAVING LIVES???

Are you an “extremist”? Take the quiz.

  1. I want the killing to end.
  2. I think it is wrong for shelters to neglect and abuse animals.
  3. If other communities can end the killing of savable animals, I believe my community should also.
  4. I care about animals and because I care about animals, I do not want harm to come to them.
  5. I believe in democracy and engaging my elected officials to create social change.

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you are an “extremist” according to the ASPCA. If you answered “No” to all of these questions, the ASPCA thinks you’ll make a great shelter director and they will fight to defend and protect you.

Learning compassion on the streets

for everyone, especially those in power, it should be mandatory to walk in another’s moccasins… furry paws and all… what would happen if shelter admins actually had to live for a night or a week in a hard damp cell, in a shelter with a concrete floor, no pillow, no blanket, all kinds of upsetting noises, many dogs crying, barking, whining, and little attention.  Double dog dare ya shelter employees to do this as an adventure/experience in LEARNING COMPASSION, growing a heart for the animals you are supposed to be servicing.

The Patrick Movement for NJ
~~ edited ~~ “One guy left his dog in a locked car in [a Nevada] Walmart parking lot. Cops were called, man was located in the store, made to put on a heavy jacket he had in his car, and sit in the locked car for 15 minutes while the dog was given water and checked for heat stroke. Then he was ticketed…bet he never does that again!” ~d

As many as 3.4 million Americans are likely to experience homelessness this year a 35 percent increase since the recession started in December 2007 and a majority will be families with children.

And I commend these people in Tennessee for getting out of their comfort zone and experiencing life through another lens.

(Chattanooga)-What would happen if you were 18 years old, three months pregnant, from Chicago, and your boyfriend left you in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with $5 to your name? A small group of Dr. Lisa Muirhead’s nursing students at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga embraced that scenario as part of The Homeless Project.

When her students arrived for what they thought would be a lecture, Muirhead instead divided them into groups, dropped them off at downtown locations, gave them different identities and challenges, and asked them to spend three hours exploring how they would survive.

This “lived experience” allowed students to view lives in a very vulnerable population. Students explored whether they could wash dishes for a free meal, tried to seek shelter, searched for resources and located people who could likely guide them, including homeless individuals.

“At the conclusion of the experience, students examined their preconceived ideas, attitudes and assumptions about the homeless. These ideas and attitudes, when present in the health care system, can lead to poor interpersonal relationships between patients and health care providers, patient resentment, distrust, disparate care and poor health outcomes,” said Muirhead, Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing.

One group met with Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield to gather the facts about the local homeless situation. According to the mayor’s office, there is a base rate of 300-400 homeless in Chattanooga. Since the population moves seasonally, Chattanooga’s spring thaw may cause the number to bal¬loon to more than 1,000. Economic pressure has created a growing demographic of homeless single earner families, often mothers with children.

Armed with experience and knowledge of the health issues and needs of homeless individuals, the students developed a community service project that met both their educational and service goals.

“The students decided to participate in a commu¬nity-wide event called Project Homeless Connect. Starting with an operating budget of zero money and no supplies, students had to consider marketing, media, resource procurement, logistics and educating their own group,” Muirhead said.

Students at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga respond:

“You look at people and you sort of sum up how you think they live their lives very quickly. And you can be so wrong, so absolutely wrong. So I’m not going to assume anymore.” —Julie Henry

~

“I don’t spend much time thinking about where I’m going to eat, where I’m going to sleep or what I’m going to wear. That can take up a whole day for a homeless person.

“You look at underpasses differently, you see trash cans differently, you see area businesses differently if you only have $5.” —Abby Lee

~

“They sleep outside, they get food, they share food, and people are mean to them most of the time. They are normal people, they’ve gone through hard times and they are not happy with their lives. They wish it were different, but they don’t seem to know how to get out of the situation.” —Kathleen Hoffpauir

~

“When I shook his hand and said, ‘David, it’s a pleasure to meet you,’ I had an instant friend. To actually see someone caring was such a surprise to him. These are people we normally look through, not at.” —Christopher Wheatley

~

“At the very end they asked us ‘can we ask you for one favor, since we’ve done some favors for you?’ And the first thing that came to my mind was they wanted money, which I would have gladly given them. But all they wanted was a hug. It was a very touching moment.” —Kelly Fuller

an insider’s view: las vegas pet friendly

I lived in Las Vegas for 6+ years in the 90’s and 2007. Mostly without a dog. I had two kitty cats for five years that I rescued from Dewey’s shelter when I worked for Animal Foundation. My cats enjoyed living in my apartment. I had a patio set up for them to watch the outside but they also enjoyed going outside and chasing birds. My cats DID NOT like to travel. Precious cried the entire time. And Abundance decided he liked to stay in Fredonia, Arizona, a week before I left Best Friends in Kanab. It was devastating but he did not want to travel. And he visited me years later in a dream where he sat on my tummy like he used to do and went to sleep purring.  We had a very nice holistic vet and I wrote articles about pet food for a local pet publication. Also wrote about romantic travel for five guides. I rescued Cici in 2007.

Great, wordpress/my computer wiped out what I wrote here and I thought if I did not save it would revert but it did not, grrrrowl…

Cici was born and raised in Vegas, so it is her hometown. And I lived there in the early 90’s for six years plus for a few months in 2007, so this post has valuable insider info you won’t find elsewhere. When we visited again in 2008, the only pet friendly place to stay was 20 minutes south of Vegas at Whiskey Pete’s in Primm. There was NOTHING for dogs to do there. Across the street is an outlet mall. Cici loves to visit people and so we hung out there for a couple of days. But lo and behold, one day, a security guard kicked us out. Why? Because Cici, vicious pibble that she is NOT, barked at someone. Scary.

yes people, dogs bark (and if they bark while being pibble, well, we got kicked out. I complained but got nowhere.  I digress.

Did you know that Michael Jackson’s NeverLand Ranch is in Vegas, NV well Primm, to be exact. I thought it was in California.

Michael Jackson’s Las Vegas NeverLand Ranch

There is a new to me center near downtown, city center there is the Aria Hotel, doubtful that they are pet friendly because I could not find a phone number nor an email address on their website. It does say that they have a spa, an adults only pool, 16 restaurants and Elvis though. 🙂

A pet fee here and a pet fee there, here a pet fee, there a pet fee, overall it seems like Las Vegas casino hotels will allow pets if and when pet owners are willing to pay pay pay pet fees.  So we call that pets are allowed not the same as being pet friendly or having dogitude. However, there are other options of places to stay other than the casinos as outlined below.

According to Road and Travel Magazine, 78 percent of pet owners travel with their pet but a recent survery said 25%. Whatever. Las Vegas has new options for guests looking to bring Fido with them to Sin City.

There are other places farther away from Vegas like Mesquite and Laughlin, but we will do another blog post about them. Mesquite is about an hour away and Laughlin is about one and a half hours away. Cici and I visited both places. Thing to remember when visiting Vegas and Mesquite and Laughlin, it is HOT HOT HOT in the summertime and summer starts as early as March or April and lasts until October. If you are bringing your pet with you, you must keep them well hydrated and never ever leave them in the hot sun.

Here are a few places about 30 minutes to less than an hour outside Vegas that are fun places to visit.

At Lake Las Vegas, this is a whole community about 35 miles south of Vegas, with a marina and village shopping and a Loew’s hotel that is pet friendly.

Click on the destination Lake Las Vegas for specific info. they offer a Love Pets package for $25 pet fee provides pet amenities, dog mat and bowl, dog toy and id, and steam clean each room so you pets cannot smell previous pets… Price range $199 per night to $429 for a suite. Mt. Charleston is about 30-40 minutes from Northwest Las Vegas. The pet friendly Resort on Mt. Charleston seems like a good place to stay with your puppy if you don’t mind being away from the Strip. It is especially good in the summertime when temperatures are 110+, because it is 20-30+ degrees cooler plus there are many trails for you and your pooch can explore. Plus, there are picnic areas and campgrounds. Mt. Charleston Lodge is where we used to go when we lived in Vegas and wanted to get away from Vegas. Cool, nature scenic and pretty. They also have great food and the ambiance is rustic, like a mountaintop resort.

The aroma and sounds of a crackling fire greet Mount Charleston Lodge patrons, at the top of the mountain in Las Vegas, Nevada. At 7,717 feet elevation, temperatures generally average 30 degrees cooler in the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest’s Kyle Canyon than in the Las Vegas valley.

Head North on US 95. Use the Santa Fe Hotel and Casino as a landmark. It’s along US 95. Take US 95 north 6 miles past the Santa Fe to state route 157. Turn left (west) and travel 18 miles to the Mt. Charleston Lodge.

Pet Policy: They have cabins specifically for pets. The Pet Fee for a small pet (under 25 lbs.) is $30.00. The Fee for a larger Pet is $50.00. The pet fee is charged nightly up to a maximum of two nights. Please remember to keep your pet on a leash and clean up after them.  Room rates: $135-370.

Well, at least they accept larger dogs unlike the Mt. Charleston Resort.

I called the Mt Charleston Resort, which I thought was the Lodge. I called on a Saturday to check their rates, pet fees and policies and they were unable to tell me basic information. Have to talk to corporate for that. What? Seriously? Decidedly not very smart unless they want to keep the place a secret.  I wrote on their facebook page and got some info and an apology.

Am disappointed in their pet policy. Here it is, Pet policy is up to two pets under 25 pounds with a charge of $25. Did not say if it is each but we do not like hotels that discriminate against big dogs. Bah humbug.  Price range for rooms is $101+.

Here are a few casinos who have become pet allowed not necessarily pet friendly. We have not been to any of them so we cannot tell you if they truly are pet friendly or allow pets to make a buck.  In other words, do they have dogitude. We don’t know.

If you have been to Vegas and stayed at any of these hotel casinos, we welcome your comments. Please enlighten us.

At the The Riviera Hotel & Casino, traveling pooches will receive a plastic mat, food and water dishes and dog treats. Dog owners will receive information on the property’s dog-friendly areas and designated outdoor relief area. In addition, the hotel will provide a list of pet resources in the area including grooming, daycare, boarding, pet stores, local veterinarians and more.

Guests must notify the hotel of plans to bring their pet when they make a reservation. Dogs must weight 50 pounds or less and be present at check-in. Dogs must be supervised and on a leash while in public areas. For more information or to make a reservation please call (855) 468-6748 or visit www.RivieraHotel.com .

Canines receive the VIP treatment when they travel to any CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT resort in Las Vegas. As part of the PetStay Las Vegas program, guests and their pups receive an in-room amenity that includes dog treats, food and water dishes, and a pet mat. Canines on the go are also are presented with a map of dog-walking routes, on-property designated relief areas and a variety of dog-friendly resources for pet walking, pet sitting, grooming services and veterinarian information.

THEhotel @Mandalay bay and other casino hotels

http://www.destination360.com/north-america/us/nevada/las-vegas/pet-friendly-hotels

THEhotel @MandalayBay LV is now dog friendly. As one of only a few dog-friendly properties on the Las Vegas Strip, THEhotel introduces amenities for puppies.

Upon arrival at THEhotel, you and your four-legged family member will be greeted with a special welcome letter, tasty treats and doggy relief bags. Escorted by their owners, dogs will then enter their elegantly appointed suite on the 22nd floor which will be outfitted with eco-friendly food and water bowls.

THEhotel’s dog-friendly amenities also include special meal options for man’s best friend on the in-room dining menu. One dish is the “Backyard Delight,” which consists of hamburger, potatoes, zucchini, carrots, apples, parsley and ground turmeric. With meals ranging from $9 – $17, your pampered pooch is guaranteed a tasty and healthy feast.

When Fido’s ready for a little fresh air, “Barking Lot Lane” is just steps away near the west entrance of THEhotel. Owners are welcome to walk their dogs themselves or the concierge is available upon request, for an additional fee.

“Our research showed that there was a shortage of options in the Las Vegas market that allowed guests to travel with their pets, while also enjoying a luxury hotel experience,” said Didya Bowser, executive director of hotel operations at THEhotel. “We feel that THEhotel at Mandalay Bay creates the perfect opportunity for guests to travel with their pampered pups not only because of our convenient access and spacious suites, but also because of our non-gaming, non-smoking environment.”

When the canine’s human companions are ready to enjoy Las Vegas, they can take their dog with them (preferably) or take advantage of pet-sitting and dog-walking services offered by THEhotel concierge for an additional fee. Otherwise, dogs must be boarded in-room in a kennel. Various sized kennels are available for rent through THEhotel’s concierge for an additional fee.

THEhotel allows guests to travel with up to two dogs,  together weighing no more than 100 pounds, (so two 50 pound dogs or a 30 pound dog and a 70 pound dog or a 20 pounder and an 80 pounder) for a daily fee of $50 per canine. With a separate valet, elevators steps away from the resort’s entrance and a designated walking area for dogs.

For more information about THEhotel’s dog-friendly suites or to make a reservation, please call (877) 632-7000 or visit www.mandalaybay.com/thehotel/.

I took Cici to this duck filled lake inside Desert Shores Community off Buffalo Dr with entrance on Regatta Dr — keep straight until you see one of three man-made lakes in the community. This is in the Northwest section of Las Vegas near Rainbow and Cheyenne.  Near Summerlin.

If you are in Las Vegas during the month of November, visit Strutt Your Mutt held at Dog Fanciers Park. It is an all-day affair with a long list of dog contests, dozens of vendors for pet related merchandise, services, pet care, demonstrations, dog theater, agility courses, games, grooming, adoption, and more.

Go to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam (about 30 miles). Access off I-15 in Nevada; U.S. Highways 93 and 95 in NV & AZ, 702-293-8907… At the lake, you can rent a houseboat for a day or a week and explore the more than 550 miles of shoreline, soaring red rock cliff and countless bays and beaches.

The houseboats come fully equipped and some come with a small runabout for skiing and fishing and even an on-board hot tub.

If you want to go sightseeing on your own (how could you), Fido might enjoy a stay at Pets Bed & Breakfast. Each pet is provided their own suite, some with their own private 2500 square feet courtyard, television in the suites, purified water, and even a wading pool.

Or Camp Bow Wow has a 24 hour staff to entertain your pet. You can even view your pet having fun on the webcam.

do not know yet if dogs are allowed in Valley of Fire (I doubt if they are), but certainly there are places to walk/run your dog in Mt. Charleston, Floyd Lamb, and other parks listed here. At Red Rock Canyon, leashed dogs are allowed on most of the trails, except for the very rocky ones. Stop by the visitor center for more information about trails on the loop drive and in the area. To get there from downtown Las Vegas, take Charleston Blvd. west. The park entrance fee is $5 per vehicle and $5 per dog.

There are a few wonderful dog rescues in Vegas such as Michael’s Angels, and not far away (a few hours) is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. You might want to put them on your itinerary and plan to visit.

spring break 2011

Note: We have NOT stayed at any of these hotels or inns so we cannot vouch for them and they are not rated for dogitude. We have been to Sedona and Pyramid Lake, and feel they are worth exploring as possible fun Spring Break getaways with your pets.

Sedona, Arizona
Owners Steve and Connie Segner built a luxury boutique hotel with the idea of catering to discerning guests and their pets. Segner has had a longtime involvement in the pet care industry, as owner of a pet food company and developing one of the first premium dog foods in the industry. To the Segners, there was no question that an upscale, luxury inn could provide style, amenities and personalized concierge services for guests and their pets.

El Portal is Sedona’s original pet friendly bed and breakfast with four enclosed pet patios.

Pyramid Lake, Nevada

Located about an hour from Reno. It is a great place to camp out with your dog, if the weather is good.  Unlike Lake Louise, Lake Tahoe and other famous lakes, Pyramid Lake is a completely natural environment. The Paiute people take a lot of pride (and care) in the lake, and they are reluctant to turn it into the next Lake Tahoe.  The Lake is 125,000 acres, lots of beach to explore. There are no homes or businesses crowding around the lake. The land around the lake is home to several caves with ancient petroglyphs, and artifacts.

Be sure to visit The Stone Mother. There have been reports of people hearing the cries of an invisible baby when they’re at the Lake. Some have even heard the laughs of children.  The legend: after traveling to Pyramid Lake to meet the man ruler of the lake, the Stone Mother was in awe. The man ruler was so handsome! They were married and had many children. Many of their children were unruly and the man ruler became angry. He decided to separate his children. The man ruler sent his oldest son west with one of the girls. They became the Pitt River Indians. He sent another couple east and they became the Bannocks. The remainder of the children stayed home. The woman was so upset over the separation that she wept.

Aside from the mysterious pyramid and Stone Mother, there is also a small island in the lake (close to the Pyramid). This island doesn’t look like anything special, that is until March/April each year when thousands of pelicans fly in. The pelicans hang out for a couple of months on the island so check them out.
You can purchase a pass for Pyramid Lake from most businesses in Reno or Sparks. Or, you can purchase your pass online. Day use passes cost just $6 per vehicle. There are also options for camping and fishing. It is dog friendly, dogs must be on leash, and you and Fido can camp out.

For more info, visit http://www.pyramidlake.us/

By the way, in Reno, there is a very peaceful haven of a lake Virginia Lake Park, where I took Cici a few times. She liked to chase the ducks. Dogs are supposed to be on leash. It is a peaceful place for a picnic or a walk with your dog in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you must go to the beaches, go to Wilmington.

Asheville, near the mountains, seems a lot pet friendlier though. Both may have crowds of spring break partiers.

this is a fabulous idea… pit bull awareness day… sponsor an event in your community… educate, raise awareness, have fun and funds for the pit bulls in your neck of the woods…

why do we need a pit bull awareness day, you might ask, well, here are two good reasons why… yesterday, a maniacal woman on the beach near Westport in Mendocino flipped out because my Cici ran over to her two dogs and wanted to play with them… the nerve of my dog, imagine wanting to play… I was very tired and got there in time to take Cici away, I discourage Cici from running up to strange dogs but on occasion she gets away from me … I proceed with caution, but before I could even get to Cici, this woman starts screaming and yelling about my out of control pit bull and how she will take care of the dog if I don’t, threatening my sweet gurl and laughing crazily, she was scary… as I walked away the crazy bitch was still laughing and ranting…. I told her that she did not own the beach and that my dog was just being friendly, to no avail…  finally, I screamed at her to shut up, not the best response…

other dog owners appeared on the scene with their dogs and i warned them about the loony tune who had walked on down the beach… cici played with a couple of cute dogs and then we left…

cici has played with easily over 200 dogs and there were 3-4 incidents where other dogs attacked her but you don’t hear about scary jack russels or terrifying poodles or cocker spaniels in the press…

the other day, we met a sweet handsome pit bull in gardnerville who had been badly burned in a meth house, this dog was just the sweetest… and had horrible scars on his back … the owner of the store was taking care of him and nursing him back to health… including socialization… he has dog issues… but seemed really friendly to me after those mean people hurt him so badly…

bless the bullies on october 25, 2008, pit bull awareness day and send your lab, poodle or german shepherd out to trick or treat and raise funds for their bully friends on october 31…

Now that you have all your travel tips, from road tripping to flying with your dog, where do you go? Well, we’re glad you asked. With a couple of clicks of the mouse on the Web, you can find all kinds of destinations that are pet-friendly. Depending on what your preference is, from the big city to the great outdoors, there is something for everyone.

For those with stars in their eyes, you can take Spot to visit his favorite movie star in Hollywood. You and your dog will enjoy a self-guided walk through the Star’s Homes. Not much of an infatuation with the stars … how about a shopping trip? In Hollywood, California, some shops in Beverly Hills will allow well-behaved, leashed dogs to visit their clothing shops. If that’s not quite what you had in mind, but you want to provide some culture and refinement: how about a trip to Napa Valley? Napa Valley of course, famous for the vineyards, is also pet-friendly. Vineyards such as Beringer Vineyard, Sullivan Vineyards and many others, welcome dogs on the grounds and some even in the tasting room, but be sure to do your research before leaving home. In addition to the fabulous vineyards, Old Faithful Geyser and the Petrified Forest are great places to enjoy with Spot.

For the city travelers …. be sure to travel to Chicago and visit Shakespeare Garden at Northwestern University for a nice walk, or attend a baseball game for Dog Day at the Park. On a Sunday afternoon take a Canine Cruise with Mercury Skyline Cruiseline. Catering specifically to you and your dogs, this cruise highlights downtown Chicago landmarks.

Still looking for more … off to New York City you go to visit the Statue of Liberty. Then take a stroll down the many avenues and dine at an outdoor restaurant such as Barking Dog Luncheonette or Grey Dog Café. Have you both eaten too much? No problem, give Pet Taxi or Pet Chauffeur a call to take you to your next destination or to your pet-friendly hotel for the day.

Okay, so none of that is really what you are looking for, so here are some basic cool places to go with your dog. We’re sure he’ll love it! It’s cheap, usually generally accessible and you always have it available. Yes, it’s the great OUTDOORS! Typically the backyard, local park or maybe even a state park, are places you would take your dog to visit. Have you ever thought about how your dog might like to see the Wild West? Yellowstone? The Grand Canyon? Rocky Mountains? By doing some simple research you can easily find state or national parks that have paths specifically designed for you and your dog. You will want to make sure to plan ahead, as there are still some areas where your dog is not allowed.

Some additional tips to keep in mind, while traveling with your dog can be a wonderful experience, always remember to be a responsible dog owner. Always keep clean up baggies with you and clean up after your dog. Your dog should always be on a leash for his safety and your well being. So get out there and enjoy the city life or great outdoors with man’s best friend!
