Elephants in France

Guest blog post by Diana Essert who worked at Washington Park Zoo, now called the Oregon Zoo, in Portland, OR

Elephants have a huge vocabulary of sounds.  When they’re happy or contented, they make a noise like a very low rumbling purr.  You can see the area of their head between their eyes actually vibrating if you’re standing close enough.  And, of course, when there’s a reunion of old, long-time-no-see friends, they trumpet and whoosh air in their trunks as well as purring.

Their skulls are very porous, which enables them to create loud and soft sounds including the long-distance calls which travel through the ground as well as through the air.

They also make roaring/screaming sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard or imagined if they’re really distressed or angry.  I only heard that once at the zoo…when a calf was separated from its mother and aunties to be quarantined in preparation for being sent to another zoo.  That was a scary and amazing event, at least to my inexperienced self.

All it took was opening a hydraulic door between two rooms wide enough for the calf to charge through, which it loved to do ahead of the adults. Then the door was closed and the resulting commotion sounded like the end of the world which, for the mother and aunties, it was.  Rosy stood on her hind legs and beat on the door with her front feet and head.  Soon enough, everyone settled down though and just sort of grumbled among themselves the rest of the day.  All those particular females had had other calves taken away, so they seemed resigned that it had happened again.

I’ve done a lot of soul-searching in the past few years, thinking about captive animals in general and the ones I worked with in particular.  I think there are too many egos and uneducated people involved in a lot of zookeeping situations.  Our elephants weren’t injured or abused, when I was there, but there were also too many (3 bulls, 8 cows and 2 calves) for only three keepers to do justice to individual attention, enrichment and physical care (attention to feet in particular).

Elephants in captivity are probably happy at least some of the time or at least resigned to their state of being as best they can be, depending on the environment of their exhibits, enrichment programs and the attitudes of their keepers.  There are zoos that are absolute hell for animals, not just the larger animals, but all of them.  And there are excellent zoos, too.  Elephants are far happier in sanctuaries where they can roam and have natural substrates…grasses, dirt.  There are two in the U.S. ~ PAWS near here in Galt, CA and the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN.  Both have thousands of acres.

These elephants in France may have overall health problems like advanced arthritis or infected feet where, if they’re in pain or having trouble walking, getting up and down, etc. may make euthanasia a kindness.  Because of their size and intelligence, it’s difficult to get enough medication into an elephant if a medical problem is acute.
There’s a lot of politics and face-saving that goes on behind the scenes, so the media/Bridget Bardot may not, probably don’t, know the whole story.  She seems to have a sanctuary of some sort, but who knows whether it’s decent or appropriate.

The story in the news:

French President Francois Hollande has personally stepped in to prevent two elephants from being put down in the eastern city of Lyon.

http://www.thelocal.fr/page/view/hollande-steps-in-to-save-bardots-elephants#.UPcPThUeCmA

“Should President François Hollande intervene to rescue two sick elephants in a Lyon zoo?

The fate of Baby and Nepal, Asian elephants exiled from a circus for bad behaviour, has hung in the balance for almost three years. They are suspected of carrying the human form of tuberculosis. In theory, by government edict, they are to be given lethal injections by Friday of this week.

A petition on the internet calling on President Hollande to save the elephants has gathered over 70,000 signatures.”

hollande-steps-in-to-save-bardots-elephants

One of our elephants, my favorite one, had very bad arthritis and foot problems.  The vet tried everything he could to give her pain meds and antibiotics, both injections and huge bolluses of aspirin.  But 8,000 pounds of elephant needing large amounts of meds twice a day was practically impossible to do.  We ground them up and mixed in with her grain, diluted them in water with chocolate or butterscotch syrup from the concessions, hid them in apples, cantaloupes etc.  She caught on pretty fast to every trick and then it was on to some different new idea.  Eventually, when it was obviously painful for her to get around, she was euthanized (fortunately after I no longer worked there).  I think her skeleton is on display in the Elephant Museum at the zoo.

Right now, at the San Antonio Zoo, there’s an elephant ironically named Lucky and her exhibit-mate, Queenie, who’re in a tiny, barren
exhibit with not even an adequate water feature for animals their size.  The Director of the zoo is the former animal curator at Oregon Zoo.  I’m amazed and appalled that he would allow them to stay there in those conditions, especially when they’ve been guaranteed a space at the Hohenwald sanctuary.

There are three elephants in Toronto scheduled to come to PAWS sometime later this year.  But a lot of people there are up in arms about it, including their keepers at the zoo, even though the winters are very hard on all three of them.  I think it’s the city council who’ve made that decision because of budget cuts as well as pressure from animal welfare groups.

I think, in general, all the animals on earth would be much better off if there were no people to poach, pollute and persecute them.  The best of all possible worlds for animals would be one without humans…just my opinion!!

Here’s a sweet little video.  I love the calf at the end who senses something suspicious, flaps its ears and stops to stare at the camera.  For more sweetness, check out the pictures and stories at an elephant orphanage in Africa ~ http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/

P.S.  Elephants don’t believe in God.  They do, however, believe in themselves and in Mother Nature, from whence everything began.

Glass Beach Inn

native Californians, Nancy and Richard, provide a sweet quaint B&B in a very convenient location in north Fort Bragg, in walking distance to Glass Beach and Denny’s (Elm Street) and Hwy 1. A delicious homemade and customized breakfast from 8-10 am is made straight from the kitchen, you can watch Richard cook from the cozy breakfast area. Options the morning we stayed were eggs, potatoes, sausage or bacon, juice, fruit and toast or pancakes (instead of eggs). we stayed in room #7, a cozy room with TV. A small garden surrounds the inn. There are 9-10 rooms and four are pet friendly. No pet fees and amenities. These are two of the nicest people in the innkeeping business… kudos to these very gracious hosts for making guests feel very welcome and pampered !

#7 is the Forget Me Not room… Blue and white wallpaper combined with antique furnishings and color-coordinated spread and accessories present a bright, cheerful and intimate room. (w/Television, Microwave & Refrigerator)…

The Glass Beach Inn is a great place for a getaway for a couple of best friends, you and your pooch…

Interview with PAWS…

Interview with Janine Franceschi, President of PAWS…  (Photos below: Beau driving and Janine and Beau in a Chateaux)…  http://www.luxurypaw.com/blog/1

1) tell me a little about you and your dog Beau and how you started your business and dog blog…

Beau, my Irish Setter came into my life about two and a half years ago. I woke up one morning and “needed” a dog and not only a dog, but an Irish Setter! Quite out of the blue… I searched on Petfinder.com, found an Irish Setter breeder in Missouri and was looking forward to the puppy’s arrival that coming weekend.

Beau is such a wonderful dog that my friends wanted me to name him “lucky’ because they’d say, “You got lucky with that dog!” buying him over the internet and all. But, I knew all along that he was the one! He adds so much joy to my life and I thank him every day for coming to live with me!

My business PAW: Pet-friendly Accommodations Worldwide began shortly after Beau’s arrival. Although, at the time I didn’t realize it was a new business, it started out more as a ‘hobby’ that grew to an ‘obsession’ and I realized I’d better do something with this information, otherwise I was just some crazy dog lady!

Friends and family were surprised when I told them about Beau and almost everyone said the same thing, “But you love to travel, who’s going to watch the dog when you travel? And you travel so much, can you really have a dog?” People assumed that I would have to choose between being a pet owner and continuing to enjoy travel adventures.

So the ‘hobby’ became searching for and compiling a list of luxury, pet-friendly hotels that would accept a 60 LB dog, that turned into a list, the list into a database, and the database into the only online pet-friendly hotel booking engine to exclusively feature luxury, pet-friendly hotels for booking. It also became the only site to allow the user to utilize their pets weight as part of the hotel search criteria, which can be a huge time saver.

2) When did you start your blog, and what inspired you to get into blogging?

The blog was a component of the website and a way for me to write in more detail about hotels, activities, or pet products I discovered along the way. Also as a vehicle to share information such as Pet Passport information.

3) What’s your favorite thing about blogging?

The ability for people to comment and provide feedback about what you’re writing.

4) Have you noticed a shift in attitudes towards bloggers, dogs, dog travel ?

Absolutely, I just completed a 13,000 mile, 30-state, 50-luxury, pet-friendly hotel cross country tour. (Janine and Beau live on Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts when they are not traveling).  If I had a dime for every person who said, “I wish I had known this hotel was pet-friendly, we would have brought our dog!” I’d never have to work another day in my life!! People really want to have the entire family with them when they travel, for business or pleasure and are just starting to realize that they don’t have to sacrifice the level of amenity when they travel in order to bring their pet along…they can have both a great level of amenity hotel and their pet.

5) What are some of your favorite blogs ?

Well, yours of course!  (Editor note: OF COURSE!) 🙂

6) If there was one tip that you would recommend that pet owners and/or pet business owners or pet bloggers follow, what would it be and why?

Remember when you are out with your pet, traveling or even just walking around your neighborhood, you are an ambassador for people who live pet-centric lives. If people have a good experience with you and your dog they are more likely to generalize that pets provide a pleasant experience and that will open up more doors to including our pets in other areas of our lives.

7) How do you cope with juggling all of the various balls you’ve got going in the air?

I am an outrageous list maker! I’ll have about six lists going at once. I tell people all the time, “you do not want to be in my head….it’s a very chaotic place!” 🙂 LOL

8. As a dog lover, do you have a favorite product or service that EVERY dog owner MUST have for their pet?

There are four companies that I recently awarded “PAW – Top Dog awards for excellence in 2008”. ArfDog www.arfdog.com makes wonderful ‘louis vuitton’ style sleepover suitcases for pups complete with an embroidered bath robe. Bowser Beer, www.3 busydogs.com makes non-alcoholic beer for dogs and the concept is so well executed. Dog Lovers Wine Club www.dogloverswineclub.com donates proceeds to shelters across America and finally Dog is Good www.dogisgood.com who offers a great line of dog-themed people clothing.

Janine shares some luxury travel tips for traveling with your pup:

1. Always ask what is included in the pet welcome amenity so that you can bring whatever your pet needs to be comfortable in a strange place.

2. Always bring your pet’s normal food. The luxury pet room service menus are a lot of fun to try, but relying on them for every day dining is probably going to be too rich for your pet’s diet.

3. If the hotel does not provide one, create a paper or cardboard dog tag for your pup and put your hotel’s name and phone number on it as well as “Guest” – and your last name. This is great insurance in case you and your pup become separated. I wouldn’t put your room number on it, but your last name should be sufficient information.

10 dog friendly things to do at the Pacific Mist Inn…

http://pacificmistinn.blogspot.com/

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens:

http://www.gardenbythesea.org/visitor/

The botanical gardens feature indigenous plants, including the native rhododendrons that blanket the area. Manicured formal gardens, a dense coastal pine forest, fern-covered canyons, diverse plant collections, and flower-filled coastal bluffs overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean. Located on 47 acres that lie between California’s scenic Highway One and the Pacific Ocean, includes canyons, wetlands, coastal bluffs, and a closed-cone pine forest. A moderate climate grows a wide range of tender species which cannot survive the more extreme heat or cold that occurs in other locations.

We saw incredibly beautiful  rhododendrons of many hues, white, blue, purple, pink trumpet, red, peach, white pearl, white swan, blue peter, president roosevelt and took a lovely walk to the beach/bluffs. You can take your dog on a leash and you could probably picnic with your dog, it says the trail is steep to the cliffs but it was not that strenuous… you go through a gate, and cici enjoyed stalking bugs every step of the way. The long walk did not tire her out as much as I’d hoped, even though we walked about an hour… she still had energy left to play with Gracie, the dog at the Atrium B&B. She ran around the yard, and greeted people (lick lick lick)…

We stayed in the lovely, cozy and comfy quilt room (one of three pet friendly rooms) with a fireplace, very comfy bed…while I had breakfast of mushroom cheese omelet, fresh fruit and fresh baked banana bread, Cici played outside in the yard with Gracie.

The Atrium B&B is at the north end of Fort Bragg… http://www.atriumbnb.com/

Innkeepers Mary, Gail and Joanna Jenson created the dog park… McDog park on Maple. It took about two years to bring the park into fruition. And came about because of their commitment and dedication and with the assistance of the community, the city and the Parks and Recreation Department. The park has a small dog area and a large dog area, it is entirely fenced and quite a nice size with grass. Soon, they will have a water fountain for the dogs.

Every year there are a few festivals including the Huckleberries and the Hounds, the oldest Ugly Dog contest, and several dog parades and costume parties for the K9’s.

Cici played with about 6-7 dogs at the dog park, and the people and dogs were really friendly (unlike the dogs and owners in Carson City, Nevada)… there was a dog named Zelda, two goldens (huge funny guys), a hound dog, a few others… unfortunately, one dog ruined Cici’s day… I had a bad feeling when I saw the dog and sure enough, the minute this dog came inside the park, the dog got Cici by the throat and would not let go of her… it was difficult to pull them apart, the owner finally got his dog off of Cici and I left, shaken to the core. Cici’s mouth was bleeding. She got chewed up a little bit, it was very scary.  She has not let me look at her much. I was able to go to PAWS, and sat in the car for a bit to calm down, take some Rescue Remedy Bach Flowers for shock.  Got Cici a treat and some dog food, which she gobbled up. Then I was thinking what can I put on her mouth, and thought I needed an Aloe Vera plant. We drove by a nursery and I asked them. The woman there at Parker and Jensen I think it was called, gave me a free aloe vera plant. I tore off a leaf and put some on Cici’s mouth.  Then I went to the pharmacy and got some hydrogen peroxide to clean the two wounds on her mouth. She was not happy about it but it made me feel better.

There is a Humane Society here… http://www.MendoHumane.com/?cat=18

Now we are relaxing at the Surf Motel and Gardens ($49 to $250 plus $10 pet fee per night). This is a very nice AAA motel, they even have beautiful gardens and a pet exercise area, similar to the one at the dog park, only smaller. Each room has a fridge and microwave, cable TV, wireless internet, coffee pot and complimentary continental breakfast in the morning (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fresh fruits and danish). This motel is at the south end of town and it is quiet. The staff is friendly and helpful.  The Harvest market is next door, this seems like a Whole Foods type of market. Cici and I slept well and love being near the beach.  Just the relaxation we needed after the day we had…

grow up, self…

when my puppy was being house trained, I would let her wake me up at all hours to take her outside, but now how do I stop that practice? For the most part, she lets me sleep all night through but some nights, last night, she was up a few times… itchy, she is itchy, I think it’s an allergy, from what research I found… her toes are red and she’s been licking them a lot, and her one red ear…
