wag your tail in little river…

THE ANDIRON SEASIDE INN AND CABINS (FORMERLY PACIFIC MIST INN)

If you’re happy and you know it wag your tail…

Now if you are looking for a FUN eco and dog friendly inn for some peace and quiet and relaxation, run do not walk to the Andiron Inn in Little River, California along Highway One (20 minutes from Fort Bragg)… feel the stress melting away. Doesn’t look like much as you drive up, rustic ambiance nothing fancy but boy there is a whole lotta Silence. Peace. Quiet. There are nicely spaced apart for privacy individual cabins that have been refurnished, renamed and express the new owners creative flair.

There are do it yourself barbecues, kitchens, a hot tub in the woods (how romantic)… speaking of romance, if I were getting married, this would be a fabulous place to tie the knot and invite a wedding party to stay… and if you are thinking about having a girlfriend’s getaway, the cabins are perfect because you can each have your own room and share one cabin. It is a hop, skip and a jump to the beach.

cici and i stayed in #4 the There cabin, with a globe (lit), a pull down school map on the wall, lots of vintage suitcases, jigsaw puzzles and games, and travel posters, circa 1960, a gas fireplace to cozy up, television, and a deck to sit outside… the owners love salvage, recycled, rehabbed furniture and are planning to put in a veggie garden, build a chicken coop, and create an outdoor space for music as well as build a fire pit and plant native trees. Other cabins include the writer’s cabin (Write), Here, an homage to the north coast, nature, nurture, read, curious, curiouser, play and make (a crafty cabin with an entire paint-by-numbers wall which guests are invited to complete).

By the way, Cici was very happy when Jen was manager when the inn was called Pacific Mist. Jen had a dog and Cici always loves to play. Jen is no longer at the Inn but Jen is the person who introduced me to Mendocino so am thankful to her for that.

from cici to me on mom’s day…

Happy Mother’s day…

did you know that originally Mother’s Day was a day set aside for women for peace?

http://fabulously40.com/blog/1528/Mother-s-Day-is-not-just-about-flowersit-s-about-Peace-and-activism…/

from My Dog, the bug catcher and lizard stalker, everything sniffer, since I am her Mom… she thanks me because…
1. Feeds me tripe, kangaroo and hot dog treats until I bark for more

2. Snuggles and cuddles with me all night long and doesn’t mind when I push her off the bed, sit on her head or breathe into her face

3. Gives great chew toys and plays tug of war at the drop of a hat
4. Takes me on adventures to the beaches and dog parks
5. Puts me in the car (even when I don’t wanna get in) to stay in dog friendly inns and places where I can sniff grass, stalk bugs and eat in the same dining room as the humans
6. Sings silly songs to me like if you’re happy and you know it wag your tail
7. Doesn’t get too mad at me ever even when I slobber on her face, jump up on her friends and dirty the bed with sandy paws
8. Gives me lots and lots of kisses, belly rubs and massages
9. Makes a very convenient and comfy pillow
10. Loves me unconditionally

if you are looking for a dog friendly inn for some peace and quiet and relaxation, run do not walk to the Pacific Mist Inn in Little River, California along Highway One (20 minutes from Fort Bragg)… I can feel the stress melting away.  We conked out, slept really well in our cabin. Doesn’t look like much as you drive up, rustic ambiance nothing fancy but boy there is a whole lotta Silence. Peace. Quiet. There are nicely spaced apart for privacy individual bungalow cabins,  with do it yourself barbecues, kitchens, a hot tub in the woods (how romantic)… speaking of romance, if I were getting married, this would be a fabulous place to tie the knot and invite your wedding party to stay…

it is five minutes to restaurants, the innkeepers here have thought of everything… just love the personal touches, from a book that tells you all of the local info from beaches to restaurants to art galleries… to the little notes and tips (28 thing to do on a rainy day) with instructions, they make you feel very welcome and at home here…

and if you are thinking about having a girlfriend’s getaway, the cabins are perfect because you can each have your own room and share one cabin. It is a hop, skip and a jump to the beach. Close the doors in between the rooms for privacy, open them for late night snacks, movie watching and girl talk…

cici and i stayed in the zen cabin at the Pacific Mist Inn with our very own zen water fountain tinkling outside, i kid you not… we had two rooms, an entire cabin, with two beds, one for me, and one for her… 🙂  a fireplace with wood to cozy up, two bathrooms, two televisions, two phones, a kitchen, and a deck to sit outside… cici is happy and at home, only restriction was for her to have fun and eat her doggie biscuits that they left for us with a sweet note… and two chocolates for me (i did not share them with her)…

there is a whale and dolphin room, ocean mist room and more…

If and when you bring your dogs, you can have a fabulous breakfast, lunch or dinner with your pooches at the nearby Stanford Inn. We ate breakfast there. The scones are to live for and the food is divinely scrumptious. Cici got overexcited and had to go back in the car, there were so many people and dogs and smells and she was just a little too happy. And one dog arrived and for some reason, she just went berserk. The only time I have ever seen her act like that was when she saw a cat. Bark bark bark. Poor baby. She just loves it here.

The inn is a whole dog universe unto itself… everything is organic, vegan and makes Carmel almost look small and quaint by comparison. This place is huge, has greenhouses, organic gardens, pools and it is so very majestic looking and zen at the same time. How do they do that?

the trip from santa rosa was a little twisty and windy on highway 128 from cloverdale (101 north), but only in a few places… and you are rewarded with driving through a redwood forest and alongside the beach… spectacular.

the weather is moderate all year round cool in the summer, about 75-80 degrees and colder in the winter.

the Pacific Mist Inn even has zap (electric) cars you can drive/rent in the area… and don’t forget the hot tub in the woods… ummmmmm… get in the zone…

i noticed along the way that scharffenberger has a tasting room, does that mean a wine and/or chocolate tasting room?  oh well, found out that it’s not chocolate, oh well,  mmmmm help me, I’m melting… mmm  mmm good…

how to combat dog prejudice…

I just went to a couple of websites promoting fear and hatred against pit bulls… and some well-meaning folks, who probably own pit bulls or rescue them, tried to reason with these people. First thing you should know is that you cannot reason with fear, hate and violence-filled, delusional folks. These people are projecting their own brutality onto dogs, how pathetic is that. I was raised by a mentally ill  mother so I know firsthand what I am talking about. People who are filled with fear, rage and violence do not listen to rationale thought…

I also had an experience at a dog park. This woman had a very mean Jack Russell who was always sniping at the other dogs including mine. And she would sit around talking to anyone who would listen about my dog. One time, all of the dogs decided it was a good idea to jump into the muddy water, that stank, and had a blast and as we walked over to rescue them, I said perhaps we should get them a pool to play in.. She sniped back to me, you should get your dog a choke collar and something else I don’t recall.  I was taken aback by her unexpected and mean remark. From then on, I stayed clear of her and her vicious dog.

I started going to the park very early in the morning when no other dogs were there because it had become increasingly impossible with this woman and her friends. My dog decided to go into the stinky muddy water again and we were having words owner to dog and I was considering washing her off with a hose that was nearby or a sprinkler. She was not happy about that idea and we were in the middle of this snafu when along comes crazy Jack Russell  dog and his owner. Her dog attacked my dog who was already upset, I was crying and tried to break the dogs apart, and she stepped into it as well and she got bit or scratched. I felt really bad about the whole thing. She apologized to me for her stupid remark and we agreed to not be at the park at the same time ever again. I would do the early shift and she would do the later shift. Soon after that, I just stopped going to that park at all. It was not fenced, not available on the weekends and my dog liked to get all muddy and stinky.

The point of this story is that this woman had projected her own viciousness onto MY dog when it was HER dog that was a BIG problem. But her dog was a Jack Russell and there are no news media stories about how mean those dogs are. She had a dog that bit and sniped at other dogs and she was very cruel to her dog. I saw her on more than one occasion trying to force and dominate the dog into submission. That is NOT how you get a dog to submit.  My dog submits at the drop of a hat. She does not have to be the top dog. She loves to play and sometimes she plays a little rough for me, but she was fine with playing with over 100 dogs over the summer (about three months) at various dog parks in different cities as well as dog trails.

When we were working at Sequoia / Kings Canyon she had a great time for ten whole days with four male (unfixed) dogs, a Great Dane, a German Shepherd, a little terrier mix and a hound dog. They explored the bushes and trees and on one occasion, the tiny little terrier was the ringleader of an escapade that scared us owners to death. He decided that my dog, the hound dog and him should go looking for his owner. The three dogs walked five miles down the road, crossing pavement where cars would drive. I could not find the dogs no matter how loud I called them. Finally, they just showed up and I found out later what they had done. A park ranger thankfully found them and the owners and told them what they had done.  All of the dogs went on immediate restriction.

Anyway, hopefully, if you have a pit bull, Doberman, rottweiler or other breed that has been discriminated against, you have to be calm, assertive, and stand up for your animal without resorting to nonsensical name-calling and adding to the attacks. There are nonviolent methods of communication available to learn, as well as healing methods.  Create peace and let your dog’s friendly behavior speak loudly for itself and others.Everywhere we go, my dog is loved (most of the time). On occasion, there are ignorant people who have been taught to be afraid of her. And I generally just try to steer clear of them. Why engage a nut case? I grew up in New York city and New Yorkers just ignore the crazies, for the most part.

We should definitely stand up and be counted against breed specific legislation. It’s like outlawing Chinese, Japanese, African Americans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, or any other human being because of a few bad apples. It’s bigotry, racism, and stems from fear and ignorance.

Chocolate California…

Puppy’s surgery went well yesterday, other things went completely awry… The meds made her weird, crying and just plain strange. Today she is better, sleeping a lot due to pain meds and surgery… The pin removal seemed a lot easier than the other surgeries. Still, she is to be off the leg pretty much for another month… Goddess help me ! A couple of times when I took her outside, she did not want to come back inside… so we sat in the sun for awhile. She wanted to investigate the bugs, grass, and wildlife… I just enjoyed the peace and quiet and warmth of the sunshine.

I wrote a very short review for Gusto about San Francisco area chocolate… I will write more soon since California is what started my writing about chocolate. It is the chocolate state for chocolate travels.

the flap over ellen, a dog named iggy, and mutts and moms…

http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/10554

http://tv.yahoo.com/collections/4304

since this blog is about my dog, who is a Dalmatian mix, part pit bull, and I also know a thing or two about media and pet rescue orgs, since I have worked for a few of them, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary now Society, Animal Foundation and others, I think I will weigh in on this controversy… I wasn’t going to but here goes…

First, I pray for and ask for peace, understanding, and conflict resolution… for the highest good of all…

We humans tend to get very emotional about their animals, even crazed… just last weekend in fact, I was hysterical when my dog bruised herself… I took her to the vet, and voila, she is fine… but last Sunday, I was beside myself… and I understand what it is like to lose a pet or two… I have, it is not a fun experience.

Our pets become a part of our family, usually… for some of us, and it is difficult when things go awry…

my experience working with animal rescue organizations is mixed… they provide a very needed service, how many of us are willing to do what they do day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year? not many, there are way too many irresponsible pet owners in this world, and pet rescue orgs step up to the plate to fill in the gap, for that they are to be applauded… supported, donated to, and assisted. Volunteer! Take a mutt home if you can! Give, give, give, pay it forward…

While talking on this subject, I will mention that a few very fine and kind pet orgs helped me recently when I had to come up with quite a few bucks to pay for my dog’s surgery asap, immediately… Pet Network in Tahoe, Shakespeare, New Hope, and UN Animal Foundation, I thank you for your loving care… I also received assistance and support from friends, to name a few, Angela, Steve, Randy, Brenda, Penina, Sue, Bruce, and others… without you all, we would not be together…

I also appreciate the good folks at Pet Smart who came to the rescue right after my dog was hit and a guy with a dog named Merlin at the park where it happened…

and of course, Dr. Gary Ailes and Sierra Vet Hospital, Brandy, Janet, Sarah, Jason, Donelle, Stephanie, to name a few of the fine folks who have been and are giving my girl the best care possible. Next week, CC will have her last surgery and I am counting on all of them to help us through this ordeal. It’s been a long haul…

People should realize that pet rescue organization people, like many nonprofits and even us entrepreneurial type folks, can get stressed, overworked, and too wrapped up in rules and regulations and sometimes make mistakes… oh horrors, people make mistakes, imagine that… well, folks, we do, we humans make mistakes. we are here on this planet to learn, not be perfect. And we do make mistakes… sometimes little ones. Sometimes big ones. And we are not ever going to stop making mistakes. So we need to get over ourselves and give each other a break… Forgiveness goes a long long way to healing… What was it that guy said over 2,000 years ago, he who is without sin, cast the first stone. I think there have been way too many stones thrown, boulders and rocks and big heavy I don’t even know what to call them…

Let’s face it, both Ellen and the Mutts and Moms could have handled the situation better… they both made mistakes… I feel for the kids involved, having bonded with Iggy and have him taken away so abruptly must have been terrible for them… for the kids, Ellen and the Moms should have worked things out privately and respectfully… instead of making a big media fuss … but all things happen for a reason, I think…

what can we all learn from this? what can you learn? what can I learn?

for the highest good of all, I pray for peaceful resolution for Ellen, the Mutts/Moms, little girls, and the new owners of the dog, Iggy, and last but not least Iggy… hopefully, he will be and is loved and not forgotten in all of this…

CC is wagging her tail, I guess that means she agrees with me… or else she just likes to wag her tail, gives her exercise for the day…

Bark bark for now…

Stonewall Jackson – Me & You & A Dog Named Boo Lyrics

I remember to this day the bright red Georgia clay
And how it stuck to the tires after the summer rain
Will power made that old car go my roamin’ mind told me that’s so
How I wish that we were back on the road again
Me and you and a dog named Boo travelin’ and a livin’ off the land
Me and you and a dog named Boo how I love being a free man

I can still recall the wheatfields near St Paul
And in the mornin’ we got caught robbin’ from an old hen
Old MacDonald he made us work but then he paid us for what it was worth
Another tank of gas and back on the road again
Me and you and a dog named Boo…

I’ll never forget that day we motored stately into big LA
The lights of the city put the settlin’ down into my brain
It’s only been a month or so that old car’s a buggin’ us to go
We gotta get away and get back on the road again
Me and you and a dog named Boo…
Me and you and a dog named Boo…
