Chewy chewy dog bones

We all know that dogs love to chew on bones (and other items, but we won’t go into that here).  I have given Cici all kinds of chews and bones. I have given her raw bones, frozen, but she would chomp them up and I was always afraid that those large pieces of bones might hurt her. What to do? You gotta give your dog a bone to chew on but you are not supposed to give them cooked bones and raw bones can be hard too. (Pun intended).

How about a healthy alternative…  Mercola dental bones

dental-bone-large-3pack

We have long been a fan of Dr. Joseph Mercola online. The info on his website is quite good, alternatively delicious and healing. And his team includes Dr. Karen Becker, a vet. So, we were delighted to receive these dental bones for Cici’s review. And she LOVES them. She gets one per day and drools whenever I take one out to give it to her. And it is good for me because I know that they are great for her teeth. Win-win. All four paws up and two thumbs up !

Ingredients include: Organic brown rice powder, Tapioca starch, water, natural chicken flavor, Organic Pea powder, Brewers Dried Yeast, Parsley powder, Peppermint oil, Rosemary Oil and Vitamin E.  Gluten-free.

Some info on Dr. Mercola’s website about oral health in dogs:

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), 80% of dogs show oral distress by age 3. It’s one of the most common health issues treated in animal health clinics today.

Dr Becker says in the video that telling you not to brush your dog’s teeth is like telling you to forego brushing and just chew granola. She suggests that our dog’s oral health is VERY important. And that is why it is important to brush your dog’s teeth every day. So these bones are not a substitute for that. (Although I admit am not a big fan of brushing Cici’s teeth).

dog-brush

Here’s a quick checklist to help you start taking better care of your dog’s teeth:

  • Have your dog’s teeth checked and professionally cleaned at your family veterinarian – follow your vet’s advice as far as cleaning regularity
  • Start your dog off with as clean a mouth as possible prior to cleaning or brushing
  • Pickup a soft-bristled tooth brush and toothpaste from your veterinarian – human toothpaste and baking soda may not be good for your dog
  • Brush your dog’s teeth on a daily basis – even with regular brushing, your dog may still need occasional professional cleaning
  • In between brushing, find a healthy and tasty chew bone for your dog.

Avoid dog chews with these ingredients:

Here are some of the not-so-natural ingredients you’ll see listed:

  • Gelatin: A potentially toxic animal by-product, created by boiling down various unused parts of animals such as skin, tendon, bone, cartilage and connective tissue.
  • Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate (HSH): Low-carbohydrate artificial sweetener.
  • Soy Protein Isolate: Known allergen, with reduced vitamin, mineral, and protein quality – and increased levels of potential carcinogens.

Mercola Healthy Pets Dog Dental Bones come in two sizes and contain absolutely no corn, soy, gluten, extra fat or sugar, or animal byproducts..

  • Large Size (2.23 oz./63.4g) for dogs 25 pounds and over.
  • Small Size (0.81 oz./22.9g) for dogs from 5 to 25 pounds.

And for puppies, senior dogs and dogs with delicate or missing teeth, Mercola Healthy Pets Gentle Dental Bones (1.43 oz./40.54 g) come in two sizes.

  • Large Size (1.43 oz/40.54g) for adult dogs or puppies 15 pounds and over.
  • Small Size (0.81 oz/22.9g) for adult dogs 5-25 pounds or puppies up to 15 pounds.

healthy pet food: what does that mean?

the article below discusses a popular cat food…and the ingredients that are in this pet food when it is advertised as if there is a lot of fresh seafood within… when there is a lot of other stuff mostly and barely a sliver of seafood.

cigarettes, lies and pet food ads, http://www.naturalnews.com/024210_food_pet_cat.html, beware, read ingredients in pet food, don’t buy pet food from grocery stores or even regular pet food stores.

I was recently approached by the PR folks for Beneful. They’ve got  some new pet food they’re promoting and wanted to send me a sample so I could tell you all how yummy Cici thought it was. Since there was Healthy in the name of the product, I decided to check out the health of the ingredients. Unfortunately, I was correct in assuming that the ingredients were not at all healthy. The ingredient list was hidden, you have to click to see it. These people are so forthcoming about what a great product they’re offering pet owners NOT.

And of course, the manufacturer is Nestle’ who sends infant formula to the third world with ingredients that are not ok here and gmo-laden chocolate to our shelves. And Purina, these are the same folks.  But we’ve all seen their commercials for Beneful, with the cute dog and his owner playing with Mr. Fuzzy Blue man toy…  must be good food. Not if you think your dog deserves REAL protein, no grains and actual nutrition.

http://www.beneful.com/Dog-Food/Healthy-Fiesta/#shown

INGREDIENTS
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, chicken, soy flour, water, propylene glycol, sugar, tricalcium phosphate, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, calcium phosphate, potassium chloride, sorbic acid (a preservative), dried carrots, dried tomatoes, avocado, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red, 40, Blue 2, Yellow 6), Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium carbonate, copper sulfate, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.

and this is what they tell you it has, yum, festive accents of avocado and tomato (does not say dried bits because then no one would buy it)…

Healthy Fiesta provides balanced nutrition to help keep your dog happy and healthy, made with wholesome ingredients including festive accents of avocado and tomato.

and golly gee whiz the other two “healthy” products Harvest and Radiance have remarkably similar ingredient lists, with a few variations… and yet this is what they advertise:

Healthy Harvest® dog food supports your dog’s health and happiness with its complete and balanced nutrition, featuring soy and other real, wholesome ingredients.

where? did I miss the real wholesome ingredients????  and soy is not wholesome, and whee is the complete and balance nutrtion, must be written in invisible ink???

and then there is the other product they wanted Cici to try, the prepared dog food that looks just like beef stew, hearty roaster… doesn’t that look and sound delish?

Here’s the ingredients for the so-called Premium dog food:

Water sufficient for processing, beef, wheat gluten, liver, green beans, meat by-products, corn starch-modified, carrots, barley, artificial and natural flavors, salt, calcium phosphate, soy flour, potassium chloride, added color, calcium carbonate, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, choline chloride, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin A supplement, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, biotin, potassium iodide, sodium selenite.

don’t think feeding your pet unhealthy junk food makes for a healthy happy pet, in my humble opinion.

Better to feed your dog a healthy food choice like Canine Health by Dr. Harvey’s… add meat/protein and oil and hot water, cook for 8 minutes and feed…

Canine Health is made from 6 certified organic grains, 9 vegetables and 14 herbs.

Dr. Harvey uses only the finest organic and all-natural human consumption ingredients in Canine Health. Canine Health is made with no dyes, no preservatives, and no chemicals.

what I have noticed with Cici is that she scarfs up all of the food from Dr. Harvey, licking the bowl clean, she loves this food. With a couple of other healthy raw dehydrated foods she eats, she leaves some of it at the bottom of the bowl and has gotten tired of it. With Dr. Harvey’s, I get the 5 pound bag which lasts about a month (less or more depends on the size/weight of your dog) and costs about $40 + the cost of the meat, and shipping the product to my home.  I also get her raw beef soup bones from the grocery store, freeze them and then give them to her. That way, the bones do not splinter and Cici does not choke on them. You can order the food directly from Dr. Harvey (he is really nice, I talked to him on the phone because I had questions and was impressed that he was so accessible) or from Amazon and/or your favorite online pet food company. I would NOT recommend doggiefood.com as it took Two WHOLE weeks to get the food.

Dogs, cats and snakes are carnivores, with sharp, interlocking teeth designed to grasp prey.

Cats and snakes are obligate carnivores, which means they must consume a meat diet to maintain health, whereas dogs are scavenging carnivores, who, in addition to a meat based diet, can consume other types of foods without dire consequences.

By nature’s design, rabbits and horses were never intended to consume meat. Dogs and cats were not designed to eat or digest grains. So, as you would expect, when you feed your dog and cat companions foods they were not designed to eat, you’re asking for trouble.

your pet eats too much dry food

http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2009/07/07/pets-protein-dry-food-and-disease.aspx

You could also make homemade food such as the BARF diet (Bones and Raw Food):

In a blender or food processor make about 500 grams of crushed raw fruit and vegetables. The vegetables can include pumpkin, spinach, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, corn, squash, mushrooms, peas, beans, etc. Just about any vegetable you can find. The fruit can include apples, bananas, oranges (peeled), tomatoes, kiwi fruit, etc. Again, anything in season. It is very important that the fruit and vegetables are processed into a fine pulp so the dog can’t pick them out. It is also important that all the ingredients are raw, as many of the nutrients are lost when cooked.

Combine 1/2 kg of processed row fruit and veggie’s and 2 kg of raw lean meat and add bones. To this mix add the following: 5 whole raw eggs

3 table spoons of flax seed oil or Cod Liver Oil

3 tablespoons of brewers yeast

3 tablespoons of kelp powder

3 tablespoons of vitamin C powder

half a tub of plain yogurt or cottage cheese

is my dog contagious?

Thanks so much to Pet Rescue Central for linking to my funraising article…

http://petrescuercentral.blogspot.com/2008/03/fundraising.htmll

My dear sweet Cici writer has some serious afflictions and various harmful conditions… and I thought i would share them with you all to see if you know what to do to cure her… some, if not all of these, are believed to be in the K9 handbook… email me for a copy.

first of all, she is a true bruceaholic… she has a very serious bruce addiction…  bruce almighty… our friend and landlord bruce is her best friend and she just cannot get enough of him… as evidenced by her constant nagging, wailing, barking, growling and waiting at the stairs to get her fix of him 400 times a day… the following afflictions that she causes are numerous including but not limited to:

Whackto Intolerance… whenever she gets all crazy girl whacko, at some point, you reach the brink and cannot tolerate her wild flights running up and down the stairs, jumping madly up on the couch, or barking in the mirror one minute longer… at this point, either you take a drink to calm your nerves or throw the dog outta the house and into the yard, lawn furniture be warned !

Repetitive Lick Syndrome, this ensues at the closeness of anyone’s feet, hands or face, beware…  symptoms include slobbered on wet toes, arms, eyeballs and/or cheeks…Tail Lashing, quite deceptive so be forewarned, the onset is quick, sudden, and caused by sheer excitement…you may think that she is happy to see you and think it’s cute but if you get too close, you may feel like your knees are being flogged with a whip… try putting a pillow over said tail, this should cause symptoms to abate… otherwise, tackle the K9 down to the floor on their back and administer belly rubs…

Chewtonia, aka chew the one you’re with, this dangerous condition must be prevented due to possible loss of fingers or toes, while the K9’s mouth is still open, insert a large plastic object such as a chew toy or bone, get your digits out of the mutt’s mouth as quickly as you can and run for the hills! Smotherization, aka dog butt on your head while you sleep, and/or doggie breath swarms into your face while you doze, a deadly combination, if synthesized with RLS (Repetitive Lick Syndrome outlined above) suffocation can occur at all altitudes…

OneEarUp complex, it is believed that this signals an incoming message from the Pack Leader in the Sky. These messages are inaudible to human ears, and audible only to K9’s. Letting your dog listen to these alerts can lead to bouts of incessant barking at invisible objects and frenzied running around in circles, leaping into your lap or hiding underneath the bed. It is also possible that the reason dogs drink out of the toilet bowl is to receive messages, since toilet bowls are conducive and another deceptive method of incoming calls. The only antidote is doggie ear muffs, to be applied at random moments to keep the K9 off guard as to your intentions. Also, close the bathroom door and keep your mutt out.

Sniffitup, another grave complex, that is evidenced by dog sniffing the grass, your shoes, everything in its path and can lead to meandering off any given path, standing still with nose quivering, followed by swfit outbursts of taking gross, disgusting and/or repulsive items into one’s mouth such as dead birds, rats or feces. No known cure.

Growlybearitis, one of the most lethal conditions that is the equivalent of Jewish mother guilt inducement… your beloved dog sticks their head underneath the bed and growls whenever they are displeased with your behavior. Someone unknown passing by might be inclined to believe their sad doggie story. They also could be tempted to call the ASPCA because clearly you have been neglecting your precious pet, deprived them or otherwise mistreated them. What a poor innocent dog. Now, give me one hundred Hail Mary’s and one hundred sit-ups. You are bad, to blame and there is no redemption for a pet parent who does not pay attention to their dog 24/7 and give them whatever it is they want 24/7.  Obviously, you are the meanest pet parent on the face of the earth and deserve to be banished forever to the hinterlands, Timbuktu or Antartica, whichever is worst.. that is until dinnertime, when the said K9 has to go out, or you are reprieved by giving them a new chew toy,  bone or belly rub. Better shape up !

Feetwarming, a nice fuzzy deceptive trick to keep dog owners from kicking said K9 outta the bed and house no matter the day or night…. may be contagious… highly addictive…

Blue Dog and Planet Dog, saga of the leash, toy and treats…

Tug toy (Planet Dog)

Cici took her time getting to know this toy but now she loves playing tug of war and chewing on it. Planet Dog says not to let your dog chew on them but my dog chews up everything. So she also loves to chew her tug toy maybe because of the fresh minty flavor. We hid a turkey hot dog inside of it and she spent hours licking and chewing it and it held up very well. She has been playing with it for more than a week now and it is still in good shape. This is important because my dog goes through chew toys usually in an hour (except for her Kong, balls, and raw bones). Cici approved and tested. Four paws up !

photo-99.jpg

Retractable Zip leash (Planet Dog)

Upon opening the package, I was expecting the kind of retractable leash one finds in the stores, with a heavy (bulky) plastic handle and sturdy line. This zip leash has a soft cloth to wrap around your wrist which makes it easier. It only extends to 10 feet (the one I used before extended to 20 feet). My dog is medium-sized and weighs 53 pounds. We tried the leash out on a few walks and it was ok, but I did not feel that I had enough control. There is a clasp to reign her in, but my dog likes to sniff and run around and tried to run across the street and I was afraid the leash might break even though it seems very strong. It says on the package to use the leash with a well-trained dog. Well, Cici has her own ideas about where she should go and what she should do. And with the tether I have been using, I can stomp down on it and stop her. But with the zip leash, I reigned her in but was afraid it could snap. It’s possible that I should have opted for the Large for 100 pound dogs, maybe those are sturdier. There is a guarantee that if you are not happy, you can return the leash. With the other retractable leash I used, I felt in control and could reign her in with no worries. This zip leash comes in small, medium and large. Cici approved and tested. Three paws up !

Live Well dog treats (Super Premium, low fat) by Blue Dog Bakery

I like that these treats are made with a lot of antioxidants, fruits and veggies such as carrots, sweet potatoes, peanut butter, apples, broccoli, spinach, and barley flour. I thought that these treats were wheat-free but they are made with wheat flour and barley flour. She gobbles them up. Cici approved and tested. Three paws up

tis the season to take your dog swimming…

We went for a nice long walk today, even though it’s cold, brrrrr. She loved the exercise and conked out afterwards, which made me happy. With the snow in the backyard, she’s been having fun, too, and it started melting away today. I also got her some raw bones and she loves to chew them up. I thought that you weren’t supposed to give them real bones because they’d splinter but someone told me don’t cook them, give them to her raw. This is a lifesaver.

CC’s going swimming tomorrow, Monday, for her first physical therapy session… the physical therapist who visited us while she was at the vet hospital has a pool, it’s an hour away… she also is going to be receiving TTouch (as soon as I figure out how to do it), apparently there’s a really good book that teaches this for dogs… and here’s a video that demonstrates the touch on a horse…

http://www.youtube.com/user/TellingtonTTouch

there’s also info about dog reflexology on various websites… most charge money, but I found one that had the points to push/press, oops… 🙂  she likes lying on her back and letting me play with her paws as long as she also gets belly rubs, too…
