Dog friendly wineries Napa/Sonoma

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, in a few days, you might want to visit some dog friendly wineries if you are in the Napa Sonoma area. Below are a few of the ones that allow dogs on the property. If you want to have a romantic night on the town sans pooch, you can make it up to the dog with some extra treats and belly rubs. And if you and Fido are having a fun date, you might consider enjoying a little bit of wine tasting with cheese for your dog (no wine for the dog).

Thanks to Mary Alice and Chloe at Dog Jaunt who are in the area and reminded us to do this round up of dog friendly wineries.

top 12 fun dog friendly things to do in Mendocino…

If your dog loves to travel, as much as Cici does, then you simply must visit Mendocino county, a few hours north of San Francisco.  Horizon Air has also added flights from Las Vegas to Santa Rosa, California. You and your dog can take a nice scenic hour and a half drive north and visit wineries along the way. Most of the wineries are dog friendly and have grass and bushes to explore and sniff. Some even offer doggie treats.

Perhaps your dog would like to expand horizons, catch up on culture and enjoy some activities not available in other places.  If so, here are the top 12 suggestions of Cici the wonder dog  (as mentioned in previous posts).  Here is an update of some of the new activities, happenings and dog friendly events coming up.

l. Tiptoe through the Botanical gardens

Between the tulips and other flowers, (over 150 varieties), Fido will enjoy a nice stroll with you to the beach. Well-mannered dogs

on leashes are always welcome and enjoy free admission.

2. Beach romp (Noyo Harbor or a private beach)… most beaches are dog friendly and dogs have to be on leash.

Dogs love to splash and do the doggie paddle in the ocean. And Mendocino County’s coastline has an abundance of places for them to swim.

Big River Beach, N. Big River Road, Mendocino
Portuguese Beach, Mendocino Headlands, Mendocino
Van Damme State Beach, Highway 1, Mendocino
Caspar Beach, 14441 Point Cabrillo Dr., Caspar
MacKerricher State Park, Highway 1, Fort Bragg

And for an extended stay, you can also camp out with Fido.

With nearly 100 miles of coastline and dozens of state and private campgrounds, finding a place to camp on the Mendocino Coast is not difficult. The most popular state parks are MacKerricher (Fort Bragg) and Russian Gulch (Mendocino) and Van Damme (Little River).

3. Take a hike.

Jughandle State Reserve features a 2½-mile self-guided nature trail called the Ecological Staircase. Starting by the ocean, this trail goes inland up a series of five ancient terraces formed by waves, glacier, and tectonic activity. Each terrace was uplifted from the sea about 100,000 years after the previous was raised. The lowest terrace is prairie, followed by a pine forest, then a redwood forest, and finally a pygmy forest with knee-high trees that are decades old. The trail features an amazing variety of trees, since the ecologies of the different terraces vary widely.

Three miles south of Fort Bragg. Turn west off Highway One into the well-marked parking area. 707-937-5804

Distance and Time: 5 miles round trip; about 3 hours.

Alternate: a short, easy trail goes west from the parking lot down to Jughandle Beach.

4. Get a free ice cream cone for your mutt at Cowlick’s ice cream

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream. And Fido may also enjoy a sweet vanilla kiddie cone on a sunny day.

5. Stroll the shops in Mendocino and buy some doggie perfume.

After all the rolling, licking and splashing in the water and mud and sand, you may want to get some doggie perfume for Fido. Mendocino has many enjoyable gift shops and places where Furshionistas prefer to shop.

And there are numerous pet supply shops such as Paws for Cats & Dogs, 338 N. Main St., Fort Bragg, 707-964-3322, Fort Bragg Feed & Pet, 880 Stewart St., Fort Bragg, 707-964-3333, and Evergreen Barn Pet Grocery, 477 Evergreen St., Mendocino, 707-937-3300.

6. Stay at a dog friendly inn such as the Pacific Mist Inn, Pine Beach Inn, Atrium Bed and Breakfast, Surf Motel and Gardens, Little River Inn, Stanford Inn, or Abigail’s Bed and Breakfast…

The pet friendliest lodging can be found at these inns. Little River Inn supplies a doggie gift basket including bowls, treats, and doggie socks.

More information about specials and the Huckleberry and Hounds event in September can be found at

Here’s a preview of the 2nd Annual Huckleberries and Hounds Festival Set for Sept. 26-28

A dine-with-your-dog BBQ, dog art-making, and pup psychic readings, along with huckleberry food treats, will highlight Fort Bragg’s 2nd Annual Huckleberries and Hounds Festival Sept. 26-28.

Restaurants and shops will offer huckleberry margaritas, desserts, jam, pancakes, ice cream, and elaborate dinners with huckleberry sauces.

7. Dine together at the Stanford Inn

The Stanford Inn is an original pet friendly zenlike inn.  You can even dine with well-behaved Fido during the day.

Just to clarify:

http://www.stanfordinn.com/innlight/pets.html

By the way, well behaved dogs are welcome in our lobby but not our dining room. If you would like breakfast or dinner to be served in the lobby, we are happy to accommodate you…

8. Play catch or frisbee at the Fort Bragg dog park.

Fort Bragg has McDoggie park, a dedicated dog park, where nonaggressive and friendly doggies play. McDoggies is at Willow and Lincoln Streets. Take Maple Street east from Highway One (Main Street) until it ends at the dog park on Lincoln St.

9. Go kayaking with your dog

You can paddle up Big River in a canoe from Catch a Canoe & Bicycles, Too, located at Highway 1 & Comptche-Ukiah Rd, Mendocino, 707-937-0273.

10. Tiny dogs can take the Skunk train with their owners, if they can fit inside your purse; chew chew… chew chew…

11. Fido may accompany you while sport fishing and whale watching with All Aboard Adventures, North Harbor Dr., Fort Bragg, 707-964-1881 or Anchor Charter Boats, PO Box 103, Fort Bragg, 707-964-4550.

12.  There are many places for you and Fido to have a puppy picnic in the area.

And if you seek a hot meal, there are a variety of choices of restaurants where Fido can sit beside you outside.

Café One, 753 N Main Street, Fort Bragg
Home Style Café, 790 S. Main Street, Fort Bragg
Laurel Deli, 401 N Main Street, Fort Bragg
Mendocino Cookie Company, Main St., Fort Bragg
Nemo’s Fish Market, 2410 N Harbor Dr., Fort Bragg
Piaci Pub & Pizzeria, 120 W. Redwood Avenue, Fort Bragg
Lu’s Kitchen, 45013 Ukiah Street Mendocino
Mendo Burgers, 10483 Lansing Street, Mendocino
Mendocino Café, 10451 Lansing Street, Mendocino
Mendocino Hotel, 45080 Main Street, Mendocino
Moody’s Organic Coffee Bar, 10450 Lansing Street, Mendocino

russian river has gone to the dawgs…and chickens…

Cici and I left Nevada late, about 10 a.m. and drove via 88 down to Jackson… unlike in January, when we encountered lots of weather, snow, in other words, the morning’s drive was a breeze… we stopped off at the Sequoia drive-in before Jackson for a turkey burger, they have the best… Cici licked feet of all who would let her and got some treats…

We drove on the 12 which turned out to be the long way, got lost, and then got back on track on the 80 to the 37 and exited in Petaluma, a shortcut… then we got lost again trying to find out way onto River Road in Guerneville, our final destination.

Finally, after three people directed us to go in the wrong direction, we made it here to the Sonoma Orchid Inn… we could have opted to go the way I know to go, through Bodega Bay, but my neck and back hurt from all of the heavy lifting and packing the car, and I thought it would be quicker to go the way I didn’t know… duh… we will leave here and go to Bodega, visit Sebastopol, and get snacks at Trader Joe’s in Santa Rosa. We will then take the 101 north to the 128 up to Mendocino and Little River, CA this afternoon…

The Sonoma Orchid Inn is a sweet place. It used to be called the Ridenhour Inn… I love the new name. Owners and innkeepers of the inn for two years, Dana and Brian, instantly came out to greet us with their two dogs Saffy (Saffron) and Cori (Coriander), the spice dogs… Saffy offered Cici her own very special hoof chew which Cici confiscated immediately. I made her give it back and Saffy once again gave it up to her guest. What a generous little host. She’s really cute, too…

While we chatted and got the lay of the land, Cici decided to scope out and sniff the new digs. Ignoring Saffy almost completely, except to growl at the girl for having the audacity of taking her hoof chew back, at which point I took the chew away from her and gave it to Saffy’s owner. Cici is still wondering what happened to that yummy chew.

The inn has ten rooms, most of them pet friendly. We are staying in the Madrone room, nice and big, with a back glass door, a fireplace (the weather is too warm, shucks), a fan, very nicely furnished, a large bed, king or queen, a TV, no phone, wireless Internet…

http://www.sonomaorchidinn.com/rooms/madrone.asp

We’ve heard rumors about two hens/chickens who will be out to greet us soon… and at 9 a.m., we will have breakfast made from the fresh eggs and organic produce grown here… There are always fresh cookies and coffee out in the main room where the office is.  All in all, it is peaceful and quiet and set off the road a tiny bit into the woods.

Nearby is the fabulous Armstrong Woods, about 5-10 minutes from here, rumors of a great Thai restaurant, which I would have tried but was too tired to move last night, and it’s about 20 minutes to Bodega Bay. There are wonderful wineries, and Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa and Windsor have some delicious chocolate yummies… we may check out later on our way out…

Along Highway One… from Monterey to Bodega Bay…

I fell in love with Bodega Bay on a visit to Santa Rosa when I still lived in Carson City. I went there every day rain or shine, it didn’t matter. I adore the rocky, craggy shoreline. I cast a few prayers out to the ocean and lo and behold a few years later, in 2004, I had the opportunity to live there, in a house across from the beach. The deer visited the lawn every night. And it was quiet and peaceful. I took care of a cat and enjoyed the salty air.

Given my love for Bodega Bay and Half Moon Bay, Cici and I decided to travel up from Monterey along Hwy 1, along the coast. I thought that the beaches were dog friendly but found out that they are not. Not even at Costa Noa, an upscale eco camp where you can stay in a yurt. So we bypassed most of the towns. There are some interesting farms that we did not go to but one of these days, we will visit.

A great chocolate find is Donnelly’s in Santa Cruz. Yum yum. quite a great assortment of chocolates, including alcohol fillings, an array of fillings that set the mouth to watering.

http://www.donnellychocolates.com/

Past Pescadero and Pigeon Point, just south of the town of Half Moon Bay, there is a really great Italian restaurant that has the BEST chocolate dessert (death by chocolate cake) that I’ve EVER tasted. Joe’s restaurant, 2380 S. Cabrillo Highway (Hwy 1). 650-560-9260.

http://www.halfmoonbayjoes.com/index.htm

Right in Half Moon Bay, just after you pass the turnoff for Hwy 92, that goes into Redwood City, we had to visit our favorite Thai restaurant, Siam Restaurant. The owner and staff are from Thailand, very friendly, the nicest people and the food is wonderful. I love the Pad Thai with chicken and chicken curry. One time, I went on a fishing trip (never again) and brought back a boatload of fish and gave it to them. They cooked some up for me in a curry sauce and it was mouthwateringly wonderful. It’s at 50 Cabrillo Hwy N, #2, Half Moon Bay. Cici made friends outside while I had lunch.

Afterwards, we walked along the beach. I can never remember which beach it is, Francis or Poplar, it has free parking, the others charge a fee.   There is a horse path that goes along the cliff, the beach is very steep and I never actually go onto the beach there. She sniffed and sniffed to her heart’s delight.

http://www.halfmoonbaychamber.org/visiting_hmb/beaches.html#Poplar%20Beach

After visiting another beach and wandering around town, we went to the bank and headed back to Carson City. It was around 4 pm, worse traffic ever and no good path. We got stuck along the 37 into Vallejo. Terrible place to get stuck. Isolated and deserted, but we had company because of all of the traffic. Luckily, a car filled with English tourists stopped for us and drove into town and brought us back three quarts of oil. We borrowed a cell phone and called AAA who could not find us without the turnoff exit name. Not exactly like looking for a needle in the haystack. I bet they are still looking for us.

Another time, we went to Santa Rosa, stayed at the Motel 6 on the north part of town, not the one by the college and visited Bodega Bay.  We walked around Sebastopol, too. On the road from Santa Rosa to Sebastopol to Bodega, I think it’s Hwy 12, there are some orchards and there were a ton of apples on the ground. Sebastopol also has a Whole Foods Market and Screaming Mimi’s, the best homemade ice cream ever. There are a lot of shops for window shopping. And Santa Rosa has a Trader Joe’s. If you take the 116 into Sebastopol, there is a wonderful turkey/hamburger shack, Sequoia Drive-in on the way into town.

Bodega has the best fish and chips on the planet at the Boat House, a local’s favorite… The other places are overpriced and commercialized.

l-1.jpeg

There is a Visitor’s Center, where they can give you a ton of info about the area. This is the town where Alfred Hitchcock filmed the movie “The Birds.”

Next to the post office, there is a great little hot dog shack, called The Dog House which has various interesting varieties of dogs and accoutrements besides mustard and ketchup.  (707) 875- 2441

A great place to stay sans pets, is a wonderful little motel in Bodega where I stayed another time (pre-Cici) by myself on my birthday. No pets allowed. It’s the Harbor Inn. There is a do it yourself laundromat and 7-11 type store right around the corner. Very reasonable rates for the area and clean, quiet non-smoking rooms.

http://www.bodegaharborinn.com/

Afterwards, we visited Schoolhouse beach (across the street from where I used to live), and there were too many people and dogs. It’s a pretty small beach. Nice and accessible though. Cc decided she wanted to play with these two boys who were about 8 and 12 years old and a little overwhelmed by her enthusiasm.

We left and decided to explore other places. Went to some of my favorites, including Armstrong Woods. They were booked, or we might have camped there one night underneath the redwoods… There is a $6 fee per car to drive into the woods but I prefer to walk. It’s free but I really love taking a walk through the trees. I like to walk, stop, sit down on a bench, and breathe. It’s such a peaceful atmosphere and cool and dark. I left cici in the car while I refreshed myself in the silence and majesty of the trees. Heaven on earth.

bbroad.jpg

On Hwy l before Jenner and before it turns off to Guerneville, behind the Indian restaurant, the Sizzling Tandoor (food is passable), there is a road that leads to some paths. We drove and there were a lot of other people going there, too. I decided to walk her instead of following the crowd who obviously were going to a wedding.

On the way into the town of Guerneville, there is a school with a fenced area, almost like a park, and it was the weekend, so no kids there.  I was able to let her go off leash for awhile. And simply had to stop in at my favorite Mexican restaurant, Mi Casita, on the way into town. They have the largest burritos and fresh salsa.

Bodega Bay Beaches To Take Your Dog (on a leash)

Doran Beach
Marshall Gulch
Carment Beach
Schoolhouse Beach
Portuguese Beach
Duncans Cove
Wright’s Beach
Furlong Gulch
Shell Beach
Blind Beach

There is also Chanslor Stables where you can rent horses and ride along the beach, too. On the way from Bodega to Schoolhouse beach. The Sonoma coast is breathtaking.

After I moved from Bodega, I lived in Bolinas for the summer, and I used to take Hwy l from Bolinas up to Bodega Bay once a week to pick up my mail. It is a wonderful one hour drive along the water and alongside the trees. You go into Point Reyes Lighthouse National Seashore.  I found it quite meditative. In places it is twisty and windy but not excessively. And there are so many wonderful beaches and places to visit including Dillon’s beach.

http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp

So many beautiful places to explore…

Further south, there is Mt. Tamalpais, Mill Valley, Sausalito… ahhhhhhh….

It’s funny since I lived 12+ years in Los Angeles, I had this attitude about northern California, that I didn’t like it, San Francisco reminds me too much of New York and I left there when I was 19. But the last 5-6 years exploring northern California has been amazing. And even more so when traveling with my dog. Starry starry nights…
