this scarf is made in the USA, made of eco friendly fabric and printed with water-based ink… it is soft, shiny, and this company also makes tee-shirts for a cause (endangered species, eat your veggies and other great topics)… tees are made either 100% from organic cotton,  a blend of recycled plastic bottles (RPET)  and organic cotton, or other eco-friendly materials. Cici has played with more than 600 dogs of all kinds of breeds … her favs tend to be Golden retrievers, labs, German Shepherds, Boxers, Labradoodles, Australian Shepherd, Border Collies (BIG dogs) AND she has best lil pals too, mini poodles, tiny terriers, and other breeds.   She has issues with bull dogs of all types for some reason. She used to have issues with other pit bull terriers but has had a few pit bull puppy friends, too.  Depends upon the individual dogs.

and she LOVES kids… the other day she played with a bunch of kids at the neighborhood park playground, licking them, showing off her belly, the kids were on the swings, she was a bit leery of the swings, but she ran and chased and raced with the girls and they enjoyed playing with her.  She wanted to stay and play all day.

beautiful downtown philo…

we camped out at paul dimmick’s campground, south of albion and the redwood forest… it was nice, a few campsites, you do hear the noise from cars driving along highway 128 though… the weather was quite nice and warm compared to the coast.

the next morning, it was peaceful and quiet, and we watched as a deer fed her baby doe by the side of the road.

we drove to navarro’s, where cici got her cookies and stalked lizards… and we listened to the baa-ing of the sheep, watched the chickens scurry around, and the flowers bloom… navarro’s has lovely bouquets of flowers from their gardens in each of the bathrooms, what a sweet touch… Andrea, Jackie and Pat are all very friendly helpful and knowledgeable.

it was time to drive into philo for our next adventure… imagine a town not even the size of mayberry… one restaurant called libby’s mexican, one store, lemon’s market, one gas station, and phillip’s hill winery … naturally, we went to the winery and asked if they were dog friendly and they are… and the man’s name has a dog but it was not on site, and he told me to go to toulouse winery a mile or less north of philo, he said that they were really dog friendly and fun… ok, so we drive to toulouse and the signed said closed but the gate was open, and then a car drove out of the winery, so i figured what the heck and was welcomed by a lab and a tiny dog and the owners of Toulouse…

what a fun winery ! cici ran around and sniffed everything including the dogs, and was given sour dough and asiago cheese crackers, while i chatted with the owner Vern Boltz… if you’re tense, visit Toulouse (too loose)… it’s a funny name with a strange looking goose on the label. great marketing / branding… and what a breath of fresh air from those snooty wine tasting rooms. He could have made fun of his name, too, if you’ve got a few boltz loose and need some fine wine…

he gave me a map of the anderson valley wineries, and told me which ones are dog friendly (see below), plus he insisted that i sample some of his wines… now I am not a wine drinker but he did convert me by giving me some English licorice with his 2006 Pinot Noir and it was really good (almost as good as port wine and chocolate) and the cheese crackers were tasty, too… he also gave me a sheet that suggests pairing this wine with dried cranberries, ripe red cherries, rhubarb, ginger, mushrooms, mild curry, anise seed, molasses, lamb, beef, duck, ham, salmon, coconut milk and more.

onto the Highland Guest Ranch, located about 40 minutes south of Mendocino. It is a dude ranch kind of atmosphere where you can kick back and relax, get a massage, do yoga in a fully-equipped woodland yoga yurt, ride horses, swim and sunbathe by the pool, go fishing, play tennis or ping pong, paddle the canoe and kayak in the lake, and/or go hiking. There is a herd of between fifteen and twenty geldings to ride on more than 100 miles of trails and two horseback rides a day leaving at around 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM.

When I was a kid, every summer we visited resorts in the Catskill Mountains in New York State, Pennsylvania, various places in New England and New Hampshire. We stayed at resorts where a family could have an all inclusive vacation with all sorts of activities and meals in natural surroundings. This reminds me of those places without getting dressed up for dinner and without the regimentation of schedules. At Highland Ranch, there is a free and easy pace. Picture yourself swinging and swaying in a hammock under a tree reading a book. Lazy days.

the road is not paved most of the way for a couple of miles so be careful. we were greeted by three dogs, harvey, canon, and bessa when we got to the ranch… cici fit right into the pack and sniffed and explored the property after we were shown to our log type cabin #5, with a king size bed, fireplace, bookshelf filled with books, a few flowers in a vase, telephone, and couch plus towels, dog cookies and a blanket for cici. there are eight guest cabins on several acres of land and all are pet friendly. No pet fee and the rates include all meals and snacks. They also have weekly rates, group discounts and do weddings, yoga retreats, and workshops. And you can bring your horse, too…

while cici had fun with the dogs, i looked around and found a nice garden filled with flowers, herbs and some veggies including radishes, carrots, artichokes, broccoli, thyme, chives, mint, and tomatoes on the side of the main house. The main house is where three meals a day are served buffet style. Lunch the first day consisted of two salads (bean and green) and two types of pizzas, one with pepperoni and a veggie one with spinach and mushrooms. Plus, there was lemonade and chocolate cookies for dessert.

Breakfast is made to order (you have your choice of an omelette, eggs cooked however you like them, pancakes, or waffles with potatoes and bacon), fruit salad, cereals and freshly squeezed orange juice. Lunch the second day was hamburgers and veggie burgers, with freshly made sweet potato chips, salad, and oatmeal cookies for dessert. Lunch could be homemade chicken pot pie and asparagus soup. For dinner, Rob, the chef, cooked mahi mahi, with salad, green beans and quinoa. Dessert was a delicious cheesecake. The second dinner was a very tasty chips and guacamole with chicken enchiladas and beans and rice and dessert was strawberry shortcake. Dinner is served family style around 7:30 PM.

While I ate my meals, cici played with the dogs, swam in the pond and explored the land including visiting the horses. It was great for her to have the freedom to roam in a safe environment and to play with canine companions. truly an idyllic setting and doggie heaven…

I left my heart in Mendocino, Little River and Westport…

 

 

At Abigail’s B and B in Mendocino…

We had the whole house to ourselves thankfully the way cici was carrying on…  not sure if it’s Mendocino or cici is just whacking out, having a dog breakdown or what but she was pretty crazed yesterday with all of the dogs, cats and people around here. Abigail’s smells very fresh and not chemical like some places do. The feather bed is very comfy and also very fresh.

We stayed in the Drawing room downstairs. A large, very private sunny room with a view of the garden. It contains a queen sized four poster bed, a large closet, sitting area and full bath with shower/bath combination.

The wine and cheese spread at 5 pm was fabulous… there were different cheeses, two wines, olives, salami, rumaki, a hot dip with artichoke that was scrumptious, different kinds of crackers, and cookies. Slept well and so did cici. got her a new halter instead of her collar, which i like a lot.  she also needs a new stronger retractable leash… They have some nice toys and treats for the pups at the gift shop at the Whitegate Inn, bully sticks for $1 and squeaky toys. 

It was a little confusing to get to Abigail’s so here are the directions. Exit Highway One to Little Lake Road. Turn left on the second street which is Howard. Go two blocks to the Whitegate Inn on your left.  Go to the office, and they will check you in and direct you to Abigail’s which is just down the street . 

At breakfast, which was an egg souffle, some banana bread and fresh fruit, I met a family from the Netherlands and several couples from the Bay area.  after I had breakfast, I came back to the car and cici was shaking a lot, so i decided it would be good to walk her around a bit. 

We went to Evergreen Barn which is around the corner and has pet supplies. She threw up at Evergreen, there were two dogs there that she could not play with so we left… the woman there was kind and suggested I get her some rice. Did some errands and drove north up the coast, a bit twisty and windy but beautiful, a little like driving to Big Sur… we stopped at a beach along the way and got out… and cici had a great time running around getting all of her pent up energy run off, so much fun getting all sandy and wet… she finally sat down so then i took her back into the car and we drove the rest of the way up to Westport… it is a tiny little town, smaller than Little River which is saying a lot…

We looked for signs to the Howard Creek Inn and Farm and found it and drove in the driveway passed some sheep grazing along the grass. 

Howard Creek Ranch Inn is an historic, 60 acre, ocean front farm bordered by miles of beach and mountains on the beautiful Mendocino Coast.  Charles (Sunny) and Sally have been working on the Howard Creek Ranch for the last 20 years. They met, fell in love and bought the property from people who had a commune on the land. Howard Creek Ranch is a Mendocino County Registered Historic Site nominated to the Federal Register of Historic Places.

The Ranch has farm animals, nine cats, award-winning gardens, fireplaces/wood stoves, a 75 foot swinging foot bridge over Howard Creek, hot tubs, on-site hiking, sauna, 1000 year old redwoods, and horseback riding on the beach or in the mountains.

Accommodations include cabins, suites and rooms furnished with antiques, large comfortable beds, and handmade quilts with views of the ocean, mountains, creek or gardens. 

Sunny and his wife Sally came here in 1973 and renovated the old building and built new buildings with some modern amenities of Internet and TV videos of old PBS shows and Star Trek… wireless was intermittent in my room… There also is no phone in the room. Atrium B&B and Abigail’s also had no phone in the room. The Little River Inn, Pacific Mist Inn, Surf Motel and Pine Beach Inn all had phones in the room.  If you want to get away from TV and Internet, Howard Creek is a good place to disconnect.

There is a deli in town for food for lunch and dinner, or you can bring your own. The market/deli is not like the one in Little River, I asked for Chicken Teriyaki and got some hot spicy Indian food instead, I did not know until I got back here. I also brought some hot dogs and breakfast is at 9 a.m. in the dining room. 

Breakfast was the heartiest breakfast ever, delicious… eat until stuffed, lots of portions… strawberry banana pancakes, whipped cream, fresh juice, apple granola muffins, turkey bacon, fresh fruit and edible flowers, spinach and cheese quiche, and the best mint tea ever, fresh from the garden… the gardens are spectacular, gorgeous flowers… and it’s soooo peaceful…  the antiques are real, too… 

The ambiance is very peaceful and relaxing and rustic, and very down homey. You can walk to the beach from here and there is a community living room. We stayed in the Walden room.  It is quite large, with a fridge, sink, coffee pot, hanging plants…  deep rich brown wood walls and reddish brown tile floor. 

I had hoped that Cici would be mellow from her run on the beach, but she was up all night, nosing around sniffing everything. We took a few walks and met the other people staying at the farm. It is lovely to be out in the country a hop skip and a jump from the beach. There is a nice grassy area to relax, sunbathe, and barbecue. You must keep your dog on leash at all times so as not to disturb the animals.

If you stay in the Redwood Suite, there is a beautiful view of the ocean from the upstairs bedroom loft and downstairs… if you stay in the Walden room and people are upstairs in the community room, you can hear them walk around up there. There are 12 rooms, four of which are pet friendly. There is a Beach house, and a cabin, which have ocean views, too. 

Visitors come back to the farm on their birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. Some notables include billionaire entrepreneurs, celebrities, and regular folks from cities near and far. the inn is non-smoking as were most of the inns I stayed at this trip.

Takes about five hours to get to San Francisco, Tomorrow we will travel to Branscomb Road to go across to the 101 and go south to SF. 

Branscomb Road takes about an hour, you get onto 101 (and don’t necessarily know it) and you are above Willits… it was easier than the 128 and took less time and was nice and scenic… 

San Francisco was a whole other matter… the best thing that happened was I found a way OUT of SF easily and fast, by not knowing where I was going… I got off the 19th and had a stop at Geary and 5th. Afterwards, I got onto 19th Avenue, it dead ended and I proceeded towards the 1, the beach and took Hwy 1 south to the 280… easy… no getting lost and driving along the beach, no traffic either… 

We were supposed to stay by the airport but that did not work out so we went to Gilroy and Monterey beach… now we are at a secret location near Lancaster, CA… it is a very nice place is all I can say…  the Mystery and Adventures continue…

Because charitable organizations are always in need of funds and since commercials frequently need animals in their casts, Green Chimneys, a treatment center for troubled children that is also a working farm, has gone into the rent-a-pig business. And that is only the beginning, since there are also horses, cows, sheep, goats, donkeys, chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits.

Robert Schechter, who is on the board, promises that the prices will be reasonable and that handlers will be provided.One of his fellow board members is Gordon Bushell, recently named chairman and chief executive of the William Esty Company. So with that much recognizable talent on hand, no wonder the new program has been named ”Farm on the Moo- ve.”

dog meets sheep, a goat, a cat, llamas, some cows, a skunk and chickens…

This summer, we were living on a farm in Genoa, Nevada. It’s a very small town and affluent. Very peaceful and quiet.  Part of the living arrangements, was to feed the animals on the weekends or whenever the owners went away. It was fun for me to lift that bale of hay and for my dog, she was often frustrated because I didn’t let her run about and play with the other animals. I did let her sniff the horse’s hooves as well as let her near the fence to commune with the cows and sheep. The horse looked like big whup, he liked the apples I gave him so he put up with the sniffing dog. 

One time, I came outside the pool house and lo and behold, the horse was outside the fence. He saw me and ran back inside immediately. Funny horse. But he knew he was not supposed to be there. The sheep were not that aware of the rules. Or the sheep are not too bright. They decided to wander all around the property at a ieisurely pace. At one point, my dog and the sheep met up close and personal. She was thrilled. They seemed unaffected. The llamas almost bashed / kicked her head in. The chickens ran inside the hen house, and the skunk ducked under the house. The cows couldn’t have cared less, all they wanted was their hay, moooooooo.

Later, we were in Susanville, CA for a couple of days around the 4th of July. One morning, we went out for a walk and coming back, my dog spotted a goat. She decided to go play. I did not let her get near to the goat. The goat was tied up and looked like it could eat her for breakfast without a blink. She was very disappointed but survived the incident without a scar. Unlike the dog in the video below… it’s in German, but you get the drift…Moral of the story is some animals do not cohabitat well together.

Oh yes, I was hoping that I could get her a cat for a playmate. But when she found a stray cat hidden beneath the shelves at PetSmart, and she totally freaked out, that hope died and I fell on the floor, literally, holding onto my dog for dear life. The cat escaped and we lived to tell the tale.  Wonder what would happen if she met a bunny rabbit?  Oh that’s right, she did just the other day and she wanted to chase it. She loves to chase birds. Where we are living now, there are HUGE rabbits and quail…  When we go outside, I hold on tight for dear life. Tchuus or however you spell it… ok, the German video did not embed, so here’s a link to saving farm animals, some organizations are adopting farm animals, good and worthy cause and it’s in English…

when we are grasping for air
like miners looking for canaries
in caves that never should have been
tampered with

there isn’t a breath in sight
but there is California burning at night
with fetid air
and Arnold spraying poisons into our
atmosphere
in order to make money
for people who don’t deserve it
and to make things worse for the rest of us

how can we the people breathe
when there are so many untold truths
unburied bodies
and bold lies
that stick at our craw
and won’t go away

is it not better for us to
hurl ourselves into the wind
then to knock our heads
against the stoneheads of
the powers that be

we must hold onto each other’s hands
and never let go
for in our unity
there must be peace

We will find Peace
even if they don’t get it
and never will.
