Dogs and birds and shuttle, oh my

Does your dog ever do weird or strange things?

Occasionally, Cici will run around the house barking for no discernible reason (today and yesterday afternoon). In the yard, too.

In the too smart for her own good category, lately, she stands by the glass door to the yard waiting for me to open the door for her.  Except when I get up to do so, she runs back to the chair I was sitting on and jumps up on it (her throne). She pretends to need to go out just to get me off “her” chair. Smart dog.

The other day I noticed a dead pigeon in our yard. I thought that Cici ate it and was all worried about it. All that was left of it was its wings. Turns out, we now think, a cat or hawk dropped the dead bird in our yard. Cici was sniffing at it but she did NOT eat it. Good dog.

She jumped in a UPS truck the other day for treats (the really nice driver lady stopped just for Cici) and she did not want to get out. What a great idea… a neighborhood treat truck for dogs.

what do you think of our new look?

Cici did not try to jump up to see the shuttle but this is a cool photo in the hood…

KSBW Producer Cassady Evers shot this cool photo of the shuttle flying over the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

My dog’s a genius, I knew it…

This basic canine intelligence test was developed by researcher Stanley Coren, PhD, at the University of British Columbia. “Animals who keep trying until they succeed are brighter,” Coren says, “but the longer it takes, the less bright they are. Giving up is not a good sign.” With your dog watching, put a treat under a can; then see how long it takes for her to retrieve it. Less than 15 seconds is very good. Set up three cans, and place a treat under one while your pet watches. Remove him from the room for a couple minutes and then let him back in. Does he run straight to the cans? Does he find the right one? How many commands, hand signals, and noises does your pet respond to? More than 200 means you have a superpet.

not only did CC get the first and second treats right away, but I didn’t know that she had gotten the first one… duh… she was sooooo fast at retrieving and eating it up in a flash…  such a genius… she also continued looking for the treats afterwards and sniffing at the bowls, where did those treats go??? it’s like when she eats up a raw bone or rawhide bone and finishes it and looks around, wherever did that bone get to?  (in your tummy, silly)…

she knows a few commands but not 200 … so she’s not a superpet… oh well, but this morning, first thing upon arising, she looked for the raw bone that I had taken away from her last night, that she had been chewing on for a couple of hours, and now she is happily chewing it again… but the point is that she remembered the bone overnight… smarty pants.

help, there’s a puppy on my pillow…

For the last month, Cici has been sharing my bed because for the previous three months while she was recovering from surgery, she had to sleep on the floor… Last night, she slept on the floor for the first time, ahhh relief, then this morning, I pointed to the bed and up she went, right in the middle, her favorite place, on top of the blankets, and onto my pillow.

Last night I found a company on the Internet that sells dog beds, even one that is supposed to be indestructible from chewing dogs.

If I put a blanket over her, she will stay there, she likes to snuggle into me and into tight spaces, how does she breathe?  A few minutes ago, she moved over, after the fact. Smart dog.

Anyway, I thought I’d share the pros and cons of sleeping with a dog from my perspective…

The pros

1. During the winter, you have a very warm heater (100-103 degrees) to cuddle with.

2.  A lot of licky kisses

3.  Unconditional love and companionship

4. Sweet dreams

5. A soft squishy belly to rub

6. Someone to snuggle and hug

The cons

1. A big furry immovable object that takes over the bed, blankets and pillows

2. Hairy companion

3. Licking privates K9, shaking ears and sticking noses into your face

4. Four big paws that twitch, kick and pummel your belly, face or whatever is in their way

5. Smelly foul odors may emanate from various body parts
