Camping is for the Dogs

Cici and I love to go camping and below are some tips for camping with the dogs. And we would like to introduce you to our new friends, the Webers, Christian and Kirstin, and their dog Fred, who also has white and black spots all over. He was rescued a few years ago on a trip to Mexico. He does some fun tricks like shake hands and he is awfully sweet (says Cici, woof woof woof).

Here he is having fun camping out with his family’s Shift Pod tent.

unnamed-1

unnamed

40.1 million Americans, or 14 percent of the US population over age six, camped in 2013.

Spring and Summer are a hop, skip and jump away. It is not too late to start planning your summer vacation. The lure of scenic wonders and natural splendors appeal to people of all ages. And camping is a great way to get away from it all, commune with nature, spend quality time with family, friends and the dog and let go of stress at a reasonable cost.

Whether it is to the nearest lake, beach or creek, mountain area or a typical tourist destination such as Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Arrowhead, Joshua Tree National Park, Big Sur or Big Bear, everyone needs to get out of dodge for some rest and relaxation for a few weeks.

If you have your own RV, camper, minivan, tent trailer or tent and sleeping bag, you may want to reserve camping spots in national or state parks far in advance because the most popular places with limited sites are going to get booked up quickly.

Travel Light

Pack only essential items that you will need such as a first aid kit, batteries, flashlight, food, and water. If you are traveling with kids and/or pets, you will have more items such as dog food, leashes, toys, treats, towels and blankets.  Other items for dogs include collapsible bowls, poop bags, brush, extra leashes and collars, and a life vest for water activities such as canoeing, swimming, boating in lakes, ocean or rivers.

What is Bugging you

When you go camping with your dog, be sure to give them some flea and tick prevention and take some spray with you.

Who nose

Make sure ID tags are in place, along with proof of vaccinations in case you need to show these.

Beware

Dogs are usually allowed in parks but you definitely do not want to allow them to be in areas where they can get stung by bees, get foxtails stuck in their ears, mouth, eyes, hot sand can be rough on four paws and so can hot rocks and please keep them away from toxic plants, flowers and weeds, and garbage.

Do not let your dogs roam and disturb the wildlife such as rabbits, squirrels, bears, coyotes and mountain lions. Contact the park ranger or park host for assistance if an unexpected and uninvited visitor should show up at your campsite.

Glamping or Camping?

If you prefer to backpack and hike trails, you can carry a tent and sleeping bag with you. You can also reserve a yurt, cabin, tipi or motel to sleep in at some parks (usually they do not allow pets but some do, check with the campground). Many campgrounds are crowded and busier on holiday weekends so organize your time to avoid the rush.

Speaking of Tents

Speaking of tents, many regular tents are not sealed well and some have ceilings made of screen with a rain fly.  This will not keep any dirt out or any heat in.  Regular tents also have many parts and pieces to assemble each time and parts to lose in between camping trips.

Pop-Up Pods

pod-tent

SHIFT PODS are an extraordinary insulated tent that is portable, easy to use, insulated, comfortable, easy to transport, and sets up in minutes (without all those loose poles).

SHIFTPODS set up as one complete unit.  The stakes and lines are the only parts you have to connect once the SHIFTPOD is set up.  The SHIFTPODS are 12 feet across and 6.5 feet tall and can be set up by one person in less than 2 minutes.   SHIFT PODS are made out of sturdy and weather-proof materials. They are made with a three-layer, insulated, UV-reflective nylon that reflects the sun’s rays to keep things cool inside during the heat of the day and warm all night.

The Shiftpod was designed specifically for the harsh environment of the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada and can remain set up for a few weeks at a time. This comes in handy (and highly recommended) when you are going camping in unpredictable desert weather and other climates. The tent is heat-reflective so the blinding sun doesn’t wake you up. It is so simple to set up that even the least handy aka clumsy individual can put it together.

Space is not only the final frontier but the Shiftpod has plenty of room inside to stretch out and get comfortable. When fully assembled it covers a 12-foot by 12-foot area, and stands 6.5-feet in height, allowing most people to comfortably stand up without having to lower their heads. This gives the tent enough room to accommodate a queen-sized mattress, as well as plenty of gear and other equipment too.

There are six portal windows that allow exterior light to filer into the structure without compromising interior temperatures. Waterproof zippers help to keep both moisture and sand at bay. The floor can even be zipped out for quick and easy cleaning, and the tent even comes with high quality stakes and two combination locks to secure the door.

These silver futuristic looking tents weigh about 60 pounds and cost $1195 MSRP.  If people pre-order and wait 30-90 days for delivery they get $300 off.  Used SHIFTPODS sell for $600.  Can be shipped UPS and taken on an airplane.

Cici and I are going to be setting up our new ShiftPod soon at our new Mobile Home Park, where we are living in a very tiny camper. We have a fenced in yard, kiddie pool, two big chairs (a recliner and a rocking chair) and our ShiftPod outside. When we do get it set up, just a matter of space right now, we will share photos. Also, we need a bed to go inside of it, so that we can sleep outside.

Meanwhile, here’s a photo of Cici in her new yard having a sun bath. She loves that people and doggies come by to visit her. And the bars are the ramp that was built for us to go into and out of the camper.

Pet friendly Aquariums

while waiting to watch Shark Tank, I moseyed over to Animal Planet and Tanked was on. Hadn’t watched an episode in awhile so I checked it out. And guess what, they were doing a dog house aquarium for a vet in Vegas. Cool. Except I fell asleep and missed it.

Good thing that they played the episode again. And this time I was wide awake and watched it. Very cool aquarium for dogs, with a treat dispenser, too.  Dogs like to watch fish swim and try to catch them through the glass. The glass gets scratched but it has some kind of film on there so they can keep it fresh and unscratched. I imagine Cici would LOVE an aquarium like this. Keep her busy stalking the fish. Just do not know how I would make one and am sure that the Tanked guys are not going to make me a cheap one. Oh well. what do you think ? Would your doggies and cats like to have a house aquarium like this ???

uaRECV5

So then I decided to google to see if there was an easy way to make an aquarium for your dog. Instead, I found out that some aquariums in cities actually are pet friendly. Check them out below.

If you are looking for something unusual to do for spring break, Easter or summer travel, you might want to include a trip to one of these places with the pooches. And you can always find  pet friendly hotels nearby to stay at with your pooch.

If you go, let us know and if you include a photo or two, and/or a funny or heartwarming story, you just might win a prize or two, right here in doggie city.

are aquariums pet friendly?  well it depends, some just allow service animals (Monterey Bay Aquarium) but this one in Key West is pet friendly, for dogs on leashes

Are you pet friendly?

Yes! Dogs are welcome anytime as long as they are on leashes. The aquarium reserves the right to request the removal of any animal displaying aggressive behavior or for excessive noise.

my boyfriend and I took a road trip from Chicago to DC with our dog.

our stay at Hotel Madera – it’s a Kimpton

property (all Kimpton properties are dog friendly). For my dog, it was a

great trip – the staff LOVED her and would give her treats anytime she

passed through the lobby. The hotel also provide bowls, beds and other pet

amenities you may have forgotten at home. Walking around the neighborhood

(Dupont Circle) with her was like walking with a celebrity – mostly due to

the young people who occupy the neighborhood (my guess is that many of them

love dogs but don’t have time for one).

This is the property’s website:

DC itself is a great walking city. The weather was nice when we were there,

so our dog got to stay outside with us when we ate at the restaurants with

outside seating. She also enjoyed our daily walks up to Dupont Circle [the

Segner has had a longtime involvement in the pet care industry, as owner of a pet food company and developing one of the first premium dog foods in the industry. Pyramid Lake, Nevada

Located about an hour from Reno. It is a great place to camp out with your dog, if the weather is good.  Unlike Lake Louise, Lake Tahoe and other famous lakes, Pyramid Lake is a completely natural environment. The Paiute people take a lot of pride (and care) in the lake, and they are reluctant to turn it into the next Lake Tahoe.  The Lake is 125,000 acres, lots of beach to explore. There are no homes or businesses crowding around the lake. The land around the lake is home to several caves with ancient petroglyphs, and artifacts.

Be sure to visit The Stone Mother. There have been reports of people hearing the cries of an invisible baby when they’re at the Lake. Some have even heard the laughs of children.  The legend: after traveling to Pyramid Lake to meet the man ruler of the lake, the Stone Mother was in awe. The man ruler was so handsome! They were married and had many children. Many of their children were unruly and the man ruler became angry. He decided to separate his children. The man ruler sent his oldest son west with one of the girls. They became the Pitt River Indians. He sent another couple east and they became the Bannocks. The remainder of the children stayed home. The woman was so upset over the separation that she wept.

Aside from the mysterious pyramid and Stone Mother, there is also a small island in the lake (close to the Pyramid). This island doesn’t look like anything special, that is until March/April each year when thousands of pelicans fly in. The pelicans hang out for a couple of months on the island so check them out.
You can purchase a pass for Pyramid Lake from most businesses in Reno or Sparks. Or, you can purchase your pass online. Day use passes cost just $6 per vehicle. There are also options for camping and fishing. It is dog friendly, dogs must be on leash, and you and Fido can camp out.

For more info, visit http://www.pyramidlake.us/

By the way, in Reno, there is a very peaceful haven of a lake Virginia Lake Park, where I took Cici a few times. She liked to chase the ducks. Dogs are supposed to be on leash. It is a peaceful place for a picnic or a walk with your dog in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Asheville & Wilmington, North Carolina

If you must go to the beaches, go to Wilmington.

Asheville, near the mountains, seems a lot pet friendlier though. Both may have crowds of spring break partiers.

spring break for bicoastal pets

Spring has sprung. According to the Travel Industry Association of America more than 49 percent of U.S. adult leisure travelers consider their pet to be part of the family, and 18 percent usually take their pets with them when they travel.

You may or may not want to bring your pet with you on your Spring Break vacation (family or otherwise).  But here are a few nifty ideas for big city places to take your pet.  Stay tuned for one or two more blog posts about places to take your pet in Arizona Nevada, Oregon and Washington state for Spring break.

Note: We have NOT stayed at any of these hotels or inns so we cannot vouch for them and they are not rated for dogitude.

Below are some places to avoid if you are taking your pet…unless they’re big cities (we’ve starred them) where you can find pet friendly lodging and/or venues where the college student crowds won’t be taking over the partying. For Hawaii, try another island besides Oahu.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

http://fx.worth1000.com/entries/185049/doggy-liberty

New York is fabulous during springtime after the snow and ice have melted and the sun is shining. NYC is a city full of dog-lovers and offers plenty of dog friendly restaurants, dog runs and of course the famous Central Park. For pooches seeking an upscale, urban vacation The Waldorf Astoria in NYC is the place to go. Humans and dogs alike will enjoy exploring the scents and sounds of the city.  Below there is a list of attractions, beaches and parks which welcome canine companions.

Nightly rates for The Waldorf Astoria ’s Fido-Friendly package start at $569.  For reservations or additional information dog lovers can visit www.waldorfnewyork.com or call 800-925-3673.

Dogs will be spoiled in proper Waldorf fashion with:  a luxury pet bed, two silver bowls, a special pet amenity and a large bottle of water.  No need to worry about boarding or a dog-sitter.  The Waldorf Astoria “Fido-Friendly” package offers accommodations for two and a canine.  It also includes one complimentary dog walking during the stay.  Dog Concierge services are also available to assist with any pet needs such as grooming, dog personal shopping or where to find the best Manhattan dog parks.

Catering to the growing trend of pets as travel companions, The Waldorf Astoria has launched a special treat for Fido from the new “Canine Culinary” room service menu created especially for discerning dogs. This menu features:

GERMAN SHEPHERD’S PIE, a twist on Grandma’s specialty

DACHSHUND’S DELIGHTS, miniature hot dogs with Fifi’s choice of sauces

GREAT DANE’S DANISH, fresh from the pastry kitchen

MASTIFF’S MUNCHIES, toasted peanut butter sandwiches never tasted so good

PEKINGESE’S DUCK in dog bite size pieces

POMERANIAN’S PASTA, carb-loading for the runners

Pooches no longer have to worry about midnight snack cravings.

Guests must request Plan Code “PET” in order to book. Rates are based on single/double occupancy, do not include taxes, gratuities or other incidental charges and are per room/per night. This offer may not be combined with any other offer. Certain length of stay or day of week restrictions may apply. Not available to groups or meetings. Other restrictions may apply. “Canine Culinary” items are la carte.

In honor of “National Pets are Wonderful Month” in April, the Wyndham Garden Hotel Times Square South property, located in the heart of New York City on 36th Street, offers a dog program for dogs UNDER 20 pounds (most dogs are OVER 20 pounds so this seems VERY NOT DOG FRIENDLY).

On the other hand, The Muse Hotel offers no pet restrictions and no pet fee (see more info below).

Plus, they have Ginger, Director of Pet Relations, a six-year-old Teacup Pomeranian who prefers Prada, visits to the spa and ahi tuna, and would be delighted to share where to go and what to see in NYC with all four-legged guests. The former doggy model and 3 pound teacup Pomeranian works alongside owner Concierge Lauren Vitale to book “Hers and Furs Pet-icures,” deliver organic pet treats to guestrooms, and greet guests at the hotel’s nightly wine reception.

* IN ROOM PET SPA TREATMENTS – Guests and pets at The Muse New York can indulge in a “Hers and Furs Pet-icure” or side-by-side massages for the ultimate bonding experience.

For background, the hotel is located steps from the excitement of Times Square in the beautifully renovated, historic Leavitt Building, The Muse New York features 200 uniquely styled guestrooms and suites that are very spacious by New York City standards.  Located at 130 W.46th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues in New York.   (212) 485-2400.  Rooms from $250.

The fine print for fine pooches:

  • Any type of pet is allowed with no weight or size restrictions.
  • No charge or deposit.
  • No limit on the number of pets allowed
  • Pets must be on a leash in all common areas
  • Arrangements must be made with housekeeping to service room when owner is out and pet is present
  • When registering at the front desk, the pet owner agrees to the hotel’s pet policies, to be responsible for any damage or injury caused by the pet and to absolve the hotel staff of any liability if the pet or another guest is injured.

san diego downtown pet friendly…

San Diego is a very big pet friendly city… am not going to try to cover all of the city… just the downtown area, where we stayed… The Harbor area is in walking distance to Petco Park (dog park) and you can also visit various marine museums and climb aboard ships or take a cruise to the lovely island of Catalina (none of which are dog friendly though). Coronado is 15 minutes away by car and is pet friendly.

Pet friendly hotels in San Diego downtown

Hotel Solamar is one of the pet friendliest hotels in San Diego downtown, located in the GasLamp Quarter, at 435 6th Avenue, a historic area filled with over 80 restaurants, bars, boutiques and nightclubs. It is a a Kimpton Hotel. Ask for their VIP (Very Important Pet program with dog massage and more)…

It is great that they have wonderfully redecorated all of their gorgeous rooms/suites with polka dots in honor of cici’s polka dot pink belly… 🙂

we stayed in a wonderful suite, a Masters Suite with an oversized private king bedroom and a separate parlor area. The parlor area features a seating area with a state of the art television and a sofa that converts into a bed, and the upgraded bathroom showcases a luxurious Fuji soak tub and separate shower.

king-deluxe

we love that they do not have any deposits, do not discriminate against any dog breeds, age, weight or height, it’s basically come as you are, pawsitively, the best… 4 paws up. Their pet amenities include pet bed and bowls.

try their $1 breakfast at JSix restaurant for special guests… it comes with juice, muffin, croissant or scone, tea or coffee and a bowl of fruit. Visit the website and find out how you can indulge… and don’t forget, wine hour is at 5pm every evening…

check in was a breeze… Molly the concierge is the sweetest and very knowledgeable and helpful as was Wendy, the morning manager.

parking is valet, $32 a day… or you can park at a public lot … there are lots of nearby restaurants, some with outside seating where you can sit and eat with your dog… We ate at the Royal Thai down the street, yum-o pad thai, fresh, TinFish Bar, fresh seafood (fish and chips, calamari and more) and Acqua Al 2 (www.acquaal2.com), pronounced (‘ah-qwa-all-doo-eh’), in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter.

This is the sister location of the original Acqua Al 2 in Florence, Italy. Guests dine in authentic Italian style and enjoy creative twists on traditional Italian tastes. Acqua Al 2’s house specialty, Le Specialita, is a favorite amongst guests seeking to savor a variety of Acqua Al 2’s dishes. The classic three course menu offers Assagio di Primi, a sampling of five Italian pasta dishes; Assagio di Secondi, three petite entrées; and Assaggio di Dolci, sweet tastes of four homemade desserts. The dining rooms offers a comfortable and inviting ambiance for guests, and features a spacious outdoor patio, perfect for dining with Fido and Fluffy. 322 5th Avenue, San Diego, CA (between J and K Streets).

Omni Hotel is located across from the Convention Center, and a couple of blocks from the Hotel Solamar at 675 L Street and is a 32-story luxury hotel with 511 guest rooms and suites, connected via skybridge to the San Diego Padres Ballpark. The hotel has a lot of grassy areas around the hotel to walk your dog and everyone on staff is very pet friendly. Pet amenities include doggie bed, bowls, biscuits, doggie movies and doggie tags imprinted with the Omni hotel. Pets under 40 lbs. allowed ($50 non-refundable fee) …

We had a great view of the park and a nicely appointed room on the 16th floor with desk, wireless Internet, TV and lovely bathroom amenities.

Janelle at the front desk also sent up seven pieces of chocolate when I mentioned that I was craving the heavenly brown stuff. And Starbuck’s (near the concierge, Katherine) has chocolate croissants, bagels, and other goodies. There is valet parking at the hotel for $32 a day or you can park in a public lot across the street. The hotel also offers an 8,000 square-foot outdoor terrace with outdoor heated swimming pool (open year round) and spa, stone fireplace and tanning deck.

The San Diego Trolley is just a hop, skip and a jump from the front door with access to Old Town, Mission Valley and East San Diego. Minutes away from these attractions: San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, Seaport Village, the Midway, La Jolla, Wild Animal Park, Fashion Valley and Horton Plaza.

Pet store and doggie daycare

The best doggone doggie daycare is Furry Tales. in walking distance to either hotel, on 11th and Market, and just plain a wonderful place to leave your dogs if you must, next door is a vet, too… they offer cage free boarding, grooming as well as doggie daycare. They also will pick up and deliver, your dog at local hotels and have a webcam so you can see your dogs in action. cici got a badly needed bath by Laurel, a wonderful groomer and two new toys and treats.

Justin Bonn, the manager, is also a trainer extraordinaire. He supervises the dogs and is very friendly customer service-wise. He also gives generously to various pet rescues in the area, including Even Chance.

City Dog is a health conscious pet boutique store one block away from the doggie daycare …. www.citydogsd.com at 545 park avenue at island… Gary, the owner has three dogs, the welcoming committee, the girls, Bib and TJ, lab mixes, and Buddy the cocker spaniel… this store ONLY offers healthy foods, and has a great variety of treats and foods, including Orijens, Honest Kitchen, Natural Balance, Innova/Evo, Solid Gold, Wellness, Nutro/Ultra, California Natural, Dogswell, Royal Canin, Merrick and Nature’s Variety Prairie pet food brands. They also provide healthy treats, fun and durable pet toys, dog leashes and collars and beds, plus pet grooming, self wash tubs, too…

meet Bib, the store manager…

The Spring is a great time to visit San Diego… Spring Break Anyone?

San DieGO Downtown http://sdgodowntown.com/, a program dedicated to promoting Downtown San Diego and its Gaslamp Quarter, has launched the “Time to Spring-Diego” campaign to simplify vacation planning and serve as a go-to resource for spring travelers during March 1 – April 31, 2009. Use the guide to make any hotel reservations and find customizable sample trip itineraries, related news, and a travel blog. The site also provides complete event calendar listings and ample information on San Diego hotels, activities, restaurants, nightlife and shopping destinations, with a primary focus on Downtown, San Diego’s urban playground.

Coronado, we did a quick trip and went to Petco and a few door steps down was Wag N Tails, where Cici was able to play with her new friend Cookie Monster, a real cutie. Just a short walk from one of Southern California’s dog beaches. The store has lots of fun toys, good healthy dog foods, do-it-yourself dog wash tubs, and friendly people… The store opened in June 1999 based on the idea that a pet shop could thrive in today’s business world without the sale of live animals. We did not stay overnight in Coronado but definitely worth a return visit. Lots of beach and free parking, some meters.

Other fun places in the area to take your pooch include:

“Dog Beach” in Ocean Beach
