2016 Pet Blogger Challenge

Here are the questions for the 2016 Pet Blogger Challenge:

1. How long have you been blogging? And, for anyone who is visiting for the first time, please give a quick description of the subject of your blog.

I have been blogging since 2008. Our blog is about traveling with your dog(s) to pet friendly destinations, primarily in California (and also Nevada, Arizona and Oregon. And we have also covered other places). My dog Cici and I traveled for three years and reviewed 85+ pet friendly hotels, B&B’s, motels, lodges, inns in various locations and told the tales of pet friendly and pet tolerant cities and towns. We share our experience at pet friendly restaurants, wineries, stores, beaches and more.

2. What is the one thing that you accomplished during 2015, either on your blog or because of it, that made you most proud?

as sick as I was in 2015 (breast cancer, concussion, blood clots on my lungs, lost the most important person in my life for 40 years the day after Christmas, etc etc)  and with all of the other difficulties that I have had to deal, (not having a home of our own) that I wrote any blog posts in 2015 is a miracle.

3. Which of your blog posts was your favorite this year and why? (Please include a link.)

I thought it was fun to point out things we can learn about our dogs and how they would blog. There were other blog posts about how we were the best dog bloggers in the universe (only kidding) but we were picked as being in the top 10 or so and those were nice, too. But we did not pick ourselves. And if we did, Cici and I will never tell. Anyway, I am rambling. Dogs can teach us a lot about our world. And they can certainly train us how to blog, too.

4. A common theme from last year’s challenge was that many of us wanted to increase the size of our audiences. Whether or not we intend to monetize our blogs, it seems we’d all like to reach more people. It feels good to know that we’re connecting with others, sharing a laugh or supporting a cause, and it’s motivating to see those numbers grow! What is one thing you’ve done in the past year that has brought more traffic to your blog?

I am not sure that it has brought more traffic to my blog, but I have expanded the groups that I have been connecting with and made new online friends including some outside the USA (Australia, Denmark, etc). Some of the groups have been alternative housing aka tiny home folks, homeless advocates, and seniors.

5. Which of your blog posts got the most traffic this year? Why do you think it was so popular? (Please include a link.)

23 Pet Friendly Places in NorCal got the most traffic I think because people want to travel to Northern California and/or are traveling with their pets to NorCal and want to know the best places to take their pooches.  And we offer them a pooch side seat in the passenger seat to travel along with us exploring the pet friendliest places with dogitude (as opposed to the pet tolerant places that are not really pet friendly. You know the ones that charge pet fees (large or small), restrict dogs according to breed, size, or weight, do not have any or enough green areas, do not allow dogs to go anywhere, and/or do not provide any doggie amenities such as massage, toys, bowls, ID tags, pillows, beds, towels and/or TREATS / menu.  Pet tolerant places like Las Vegas, Nevada, oops, hotel casinos. Do not really want you to bring your dog BUT if you must, we will charge you, make you pay. Did you know that Harrah’s in Laughlin is $20 for you and $80 for your pooch? I kid you not.

http://celiasue.com/2015/05/03/23-pet-friendly-places-in-northern-california/

6. What is one blog that you read religiously – other than your own – and what makes you such a devoted reader? (Please include a link.)

I like to read BADRAP’s blog. Amazing dog trainers and especially great info for and about pit bulls and their owners.

http://badrap-blog.blogspot.com

7. What resources do you rely on to enhance your technical, writing, photography, social media, or other skills that improve your blog?

I am a research-a-holic, am on Google all the time, learning, reading, finding out what others are doing and what  find interest. I also use google-alerts to keep me up to date. I find a lot of the dog travel alerts to focus on the same old same old and some of the emails that I get, people want to write blog posts that I’ve written about many times. Enhancing reader’s interest, I try to use images, humor, as well as short blog posts (300-500 words) along with catchy headlines. It is also good to capture reader’s attention by tapping into controversial topics and providing tips, resources and practical assistance.

8. What is the best piece of advice you can offer other bloggers?

Keep on blogging, writing and reading other blogs.  Persistence pays off and so does keeping it fresh as you change, as your needs / focus / interests transform.

9. What is your vision for your blog in 2016? Do you have specific goals?

I want it to be more and more real, authentic and include other people and their stories, especially seniors with senior dogs. I have always tried to tell my truths, be honest, and I’ve interviewed others. I would really like more people to feel compelled to contribute their truths, too. I also want to include alternative housing (mobile tiny homes) since I am obsessed with finding, building, creating one for me and cici.

10. You have the attention of the pet blogging community – is there one blogging challenge you’d like help with, or one aspect of your blog that you’d like input on?

I would like to expand the scope of my blog to include various topics such as seniors with dogs, difficulties of seniors in coping with life changes including alternative housing options and resources. I still will write about my dog and include living with my senior dog, issues that arise with a senior dog, and a senior person.  Do I change the name of my blog since I am changing the focus or just keep on keeping on ?

Challenge badge on your blog, did not work… I tried and tried and tried oh well 🙂

Trippy, a social travel site created by JR Johnson, has been redesigned to look a lot like Pinterest for travel.

In addition, it has added a slew of influential advisors, from fashion designers to singers to animals.

Yes, animals.

…Trippy wants to offer unique travel experiences for users of all walks of life.  Someone who’s a foodie may want a very different vacation than a pet lover or fashionista.

successful b&b owners

The most important thing is that you need to enjoy people contact; to feel comfortable and confident with people from all walks of life. Running your own B&B is not like having a regular job. It is your life, and so you need to enjoy it and feel happy doing it. You have to be able to deal with the pressure when it’s super busy or when you have an awkward customer; but equally you have to be able to switch off and relax when the opportunity allows.

will the 10,000th visitor… please ring the bell… you’ll win a prize…

This blog is approaching 10,000 visitors, in less than six months time… I’m curious as to what the significance of 10,000 unique visits since October is. Let’s have a party, a celebration… When I started this blog I just wanted to write a blog for the sake of writing a blog because I’d heard that everybody had a blog these days. Being a writer, I figured that since writers write words down then a writer like myself should probably have a blog. Besides, I was cooped up with my dog for a few months so what the heck… pun intended. And we had traveled last summer to some fun places. A blog would give me an opportunity to write about traveling with my dog at a time when my dog and I were put on hold. In limbo. Unable to travel. She was tethered, I was her cabinmaster.

It did not occur to me at the time that anyone would actually read my blog. That there would be people who would come and visit me and read my posts and make comments. Until the first or second week, when two newspaper friends put links to my blog in their respective papers, the Reno Gazette Journal’s columnist Mark who writes about Mostly Dogs, and Salem-News Editor Tim King.  Suddenly, there was a flurry of visitors and I was hooked into this blogging thing… Hey, I’d always wanted to write a column.

Soon it just became fun to write about my dog and other dogs and travel and chocolate. I could wax poetic with no editor making me conform to deadlines or word counts or content.  Wow. Freedom. Now there is no going back.  And I have started writing blogs for other people and getting paid to do so. Ka-ching. That’s a nice feeling. And I’d like to do more of the same.  If you’d like to hire me to write your blog, website copy, newsletter, article, press release, donation letter or more, email me and I’ll give you a discount if you mention my blog.

Check out Bloggers for Hire…

I am listed on the bottom with a few (ahem) of my samples…

I have learned a lot… So thank you dear readers…

I write the blogs that make the whole world sing… that make the whole world laugh… that make the whole world sit up and take notice… that make 10,000 visitors keep coming back for more ?   y’all come back now y’ hear…

and the 10,000th visitor will win a prize, so be sure to let me know… meanwhile, keep those cards and letters coming in…

Peace and quiet only an hour away from LA

If you live in southern California, Los Angeles area, San Diego or Palm Springs, and have never been to Idyllwild, you must go.  It is as simple as that. This is a divine place. I went there before I had Cici, and I will return with her and it will be another amazing experience.  Getting back to the woods. We all suffer from nature deficient disorder living our busy lives in urban surroundings. It is time to kick back, take your shoes off and relish the silence.

This is what I wrote about being there…

I did not realize how much I missed the sounds of silence until I stayed one hour away from Palm Springs and Los Angeles in Idyllwild, California.  Idyllwild provides all of the ingredients for a romantic or creative interlude: privacy, scenic splendor, chocolate, good food and wine, and palpable peace and quiet.  A perfect place for a restful and rejuvenating retreat from city life, majestic trees, mountain scenery, fresh clean air, birds singing, squirrels playing, and stars at night. If you are an artist or writer, this is a fabulous place for a retreat.

Idyllwild is located in the San Jacinto mountains of Southern California, tucked away in the remote, southern portion of the San Bernardino National Forest above Palm Springs.  At 10,804 feet above sea level, Mt. San Jacinto is the second tallest mountain in Southern California.

Idyllwild is known for its breathtaking beauty. But it also hosts numerous cultural events (art galleries, music festivals, theatrical productions) as well as outdoor activities (horseback riding, rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, camping and mountain biking). In the summer, Idyllwild also offers respite from the summer heat. And a midweek stay is always good.

Unique one-of-a-kind gifts can be found in the numerous gift shops, perfect for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and other holiday shopping. You can also combine art viewing with shopping at Everitt’s Minerals & Gallery and Willow Creek Gallery.

Personally, I prefer the wild serenity and relaxation option of the spa experience.  Dining out at natural food cafes such as Natures Wisdom and Idyllwild Green are a nice home away from home treat.  Anna Bielecki is a fabulous hostess and makes amazing all natural chocolate treats.

If you and your sweetie are looking for a cozy, romantic setting for Valentine’s Day, your anniversary,  or just because, try the Restaurant Gastrognome or the Gnome as the locals call it. The ambiance is private and enjoyable, the food elegant and delicious and the service superb. Go for the specials such as lobster tacos. And the chocolate dessert cake rates a 10+ on the choco-delicious meter.

http://www.idyllwildbureauoftourism.com/

And if you want a romantic location for a wedding, why not consider getting married in Idyllwild. Rev. Richard Cadieux will be happy to conduct your ceremony. Plus, you can honeymoon at his Cedar Street Inn & Spa where romance reigns in an atmosphere of old world sophistication. The conference room is perfect for seminars. Vow renewal and small wedding ceremonies, who could ask for anything more?

Last time I spoke with Richard, a couple of months ago he told me that he is creating a wedding ministry, to go out and perform weddings because more and more brides want a wedding that is non-denominational, in an out of doors setting, done by a wedding official.  There will be 2.4 million weddings in 2008 and the average cost is $28K.

And Cedar Street Inn and Spa is a pet-friendly hotel and an award winning inn. Plus, Idyllwild’s finest massage therapists and esthetician practice their healing art at the Cedar Street Inn and Spa.

http://www.cedarstreetinn.com

Two other don’t miss romantic hideaways are Strawberry Creek Inn and the Rainbow Inn. I stayed in the Bear Den room at the Rainbow Inn… comfy, with a lot of modern amenities and nice breakfast. Innkeepers Lon and John were not there at the time but the ambiance was wonderful.

http://www.rainbow-inn.com/The_Bear_Denx.htmll

The difference between a mediocre host and a par excellent one are the attention to the details. Ian and Rodney at the Strawberry Creek Inn offer guests a cozy all natural setting. I stayed in the Evergreen Room with a fireplace, and an eco-friendly coffee log to set on the fire. Plus, they treated me to delicious chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and some other cacao goodies.  I truly felt welcomed.

Drink in nature at its finest… Idyllwild is a feast for the body and soul…

Pet friendly Idyllwild…  dog friendly lists several parks, events and lodging….

Have Dog Will Travel…

I recently had my dog boarded at a vet hospital. She had to stay in a little cubicle all day and night, cement floor, fenced in, listening to all the other dogs barking, moaning, whining and so on. In other words, puppy jail. She was taken out and fed on a regular schedule. Her basic needs were met but there was little TLC time. Little extra special belly rubbing, head scratching, and no playtime. Ok, she was not allowed to play because of the surgeries on her leg. Still, it seemed that the prevailing attitude was that it was normal for the dogs to make all that racket. Just ignore them.

As a pet owner, I don’t want my dog ignored. She had to go outside on a number of occasions and was ignored. When I was there I took her myself. There is no excuse for this kind of attitude especially when you are paying good money to have your dog boarded.

This is one of the reasons, I offer pet owners who’s animals I take care of the option of having their pet stay at home, and I will come to their home or stay at their home, to ensure that their animal is safe, healthy, comfortable and given extra special care… brushing, walks, lots of playtime and belly rubs. Dogs need love, too. And Kongs with treats inside and peanut butter on the outside… yum yum.

Here are some tips to ensure a happy pet sitting experience. With the holidays coming up, you might consider having a pet sitter stay at your home rather than taking your dog to the vet boarding facility. You might be surprised at how much happier they will be and it is not as expensive as you might think. In fact, I paid $30 a day for the privilege of having my dog ignored. I charge about the same to take care of your pet at home.

Pet Sitting Tips

1. Make sure that the pet sitter can accommodate both your pet’s daily feeding and walking schedule during your desired vacation schedule
2) Does the sitter offer regular progress reports and telephone and email availability?
3) Meet the sitter ahead of time with your pet(s) present to establish that it’s a fit for both you and the pet(s)
4) Be clear about the schedule you would like them to keep and give clear instructions about your pet’s needs, medicines, walking, playing, feeding, cleaning, favorite toys and other habits, quirks and idiosyncrasies of your pet
5) Provide medical and behavioral history about your pet(s) as well as veterinary and other emergency contact information, and gather all necessary supplies, including food, vitamins, toys, medicine, and treats in one central location… there is a really handy ceramic erasable babysitter tile that you can get that can be used for the same purpose…. at http://www.placetile.com

I would like to do pet / house sitting in southern and/or northern California over the holidays (beach areas such as Monterey area, south bay, north bay, peninsula, Half Moon Bay, Solvang, Santa Barbara, LA, Malibu and so on)… Thanksgiving and… so if you’re interested, please visit my website at:

Chocolate California…

Puppy’s surgery went well yesterday, other things went completely awry… The meds made her weird, crying and just plain strange. Today she is better, sleeping a lot due to pain meds and surgery… The pin removal seemed a lot easier than the other surgeries. Still, she is to be off the leg pretty much for another month… Goddess help me ! A couple of times when I took her outside, she did not want to come back inside… so we sat in the sun for awhile. She wanted to investigate the bugs, grass, and wildlife… I just enjoyed the peace and quiet and warmth of the sunshine.

I wrote a very short review for Gusto about San Francisco area chocolate… I will write more soon since California is what started my writing about chocolate. It is the chocolate state for chocolate travels.

Hello world!

Once Upon a Blog… A Writer and Her Dog Traveled, Ate Chocolate (not the dog), Chased Wild Animals (not the Writer), and Got Cooped Up Together in a House…

In a galaxy far far away, New York City, Bayside, Queens, to be exact, I wanted to be a writer… now here I am 3,000 miles away in Nevada babysitting my dog … We are cooped up for at least another month. She is mending from a fractured femur bone that she acquired from being hit by a car in August… so you will understand hopefully why I am frothing a little bit. You try being on restriction with a puppy dog for a month and pretty much housebound 24/7 and see how you behave…

Currently, she is in her normal habitat, on her blankets, tethered to the closet, me, I am tethered to my phone and computer… occasionally, she lets me go out to forage for food, cash, gas and other necessities of life, and of course, chocolate… oh, she doesn’t get to eat it, but I HAVE to… so pardon me, dog, but 20+ years later I am a published writer and newsletter editor… I have written travel guides, articles for newspapers, newsletters, magazines, trade journals, web copy, online newsletters, ezines, write press releases that get published and much more… last week, I got someone published online in Entrepreneur magazine and now here I am sitting and watching you sleep… yawn… don’t lick your paws… and other unmentionables… there must be a life lesson in here somewhere… shoulda got a cat… hah…I had two cats for five years and one ran away ten years ago…

While I am here, listening to the Grand Pooper sneeze, snore, woof, bark, and occasionally growl at me, not in a mean way, but in a get up and take me outside Now kinda encouraging wagging her polka dot tail kinda way…

I thought I’d write about our travels together this past spring and summer… she was stalking bugs, running after birds, rabbits, llamas, sheep, horses, deer, cats, a few skunks and goats, as well as other dogs, capturing bugs, and digging holes in the sand on the dunes at the beach, while I was stalking chocolate… Dark chocolate, Organic, Fair Trade, rich, deep and creamy with nuts, ginger, sassafras, caramel, alcohol, fruits, lavendar, and all kinds of good tasting food of the gods… in California, Oregon, and Nevada, mostly… Earlier this year, in February, I found yummy chocolates in Hawaii, but my dog stayed in her backyard where she belonged… although she did escape a few times I heard… But starting in March, we escaped 95 degree heat in Las Vegas, and launched our Spring and Summer of Travels…

Unlike me, she doesn’t enjoy being alone… her Dalmatian canine instincts make her a social butterfly, friendly to the point of annoying. She even enjoys going to the vet, just to see all those vet techs, vets and animals, or maybe she is happy to get away from me at this point… in public, she wags her tail at people I would never EVER say hello to in a million years… but then she licks people’s feet and sniffs other dog’s butts, and other activities I would never engage in either…

Since she does not enjoy being alone, she gives me the evil eye any and every time I leave the room, never mind the house, unless she is in doggy dreamland… but she has been known to wake up just to give me that look… the one that tells me, you are abandoning me, and for what good reason?

Jewish and Italian mothers could learn a lot from my dog. That looks says I am a poor puppy dog and I need to be loved… DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE. Well, dog, if I bring you back a treat, a snack, a chew toy, or some other dog idea of heaven, will you let me out puhlease, puhlease, puppy, oh please… LET ME GOOOOO… and please don’t get in trouble while I am gone…

You know, I could have and was supposed to put you in a cage, a crate the vet calls it, I call it puppy jail and because I didn’t want to listen to you whine, I have not done so… but push me too far…

I don’t think so, human, hmmm, well, I think I will chew up the blanket, eat your glasses, and any cardboard or paper you leave lying around, and I can lick myself silly… aha, go away, see if I care… and when you get back, you’ll be sorry…

ok, here we go… we traveled from and to a lot of places in California, Nevada and Oregon… well, mostly California… and I am going to write about them… just for the heck of it… (get the pun? my name is Hecht)… oh geez… everyone else in the known universe has a blog, I am a writer, I should have one, too…
