Best Friends Redux

in town, Kanab, Utah, there are some new chain hotels that are pet friendly such as Comfort suites, Holiday inn, and Hampton inn with pet fees of $10 or twenty per pet per night and also a few others that are not chains such as Parry lodge, which also has a coffee shop. if you are visiting Best friends, it is easier to get around by staying right in kanab. there are other properties that are twenty or thirty miles away. these are pet friendly but then you have to drive forty to sixty miles a day, if you are volunteering.

The prices from April until September, high season, are higher than at other times of the year. The weather in the summer can be very humid and hot. Cici and I visited during mid-March and it is already in the 80’s, the prices are not so high and there are not as many tourists, although as we drove through Zion, it was pretty filled up and crowded with hikers.

8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 2:30 p.m.

I asked about the rest of the Vicktory Dogs who are still there. The Welcome Center does include info about them during the tour.

This is what I was told.
“One of them is court-ordered to stay here for life and the other three have special circumstances that make it likely that they will live out their lives here which is just fine with their caregivers who love them. The Vicktory Dogs who are still here are not comfortable with strangers so actually meeting the dogs isn’t possible. Mya and Curly are extremely shy. Next January will be the 10th anniversary of their arrival here. So time is marching on. Out of the 22 who came to Best Friends, we are happy that 13 of them were able to be adopted.”

I also visited the little store that BFAS has in town because they had a sign that said cat cuddling. i WAS game. there were only two cats in there but one of them reminded me of my baby boy Abundance, a black cat with some white on his chest and paws. Had not expected that. Touched my heart.

Also got to spend some time chatting with Kevin Johnson, now retired, who used to work at BFAS, his wife still does. They adopted Ray one of the V-dogs, who passed a couple of years ago. Now they have three other pit bulls, Bosco, Bubba and Turtle and numerous parrots and a cat. Each have their own challenges. We shared pit bull stories and specific instances of dogs and love and opportunities of being a guardian of the furry creatures. Of course, Cici slobbered all over Kevin’s legs and showed off her belly.

Should homeless people have dogs?

Today, we will be discussing this topic not presented here before. A little break from our usual kibble because it is important on a personal level as well as impacts EVERY ONE OF US here in America. And many of us who have dogs.

Somewhere on Facebook, someone asked the question should homeless people have dogs? I was outraged. How in the world is it that people seek to take away every tiny bit left of what a person WHO HAS LOST EVERYTHING HAS??? Yet, this is the attitude all over America.

Homeless people deserve nothing, no dogs, no pets, no homes, no help, no nothing. Because they are lazy, crazy, moochers who do not want a job or a home and besides, it is their own fault. There is something WRONG with those people so let’s punish the heck out of them. Bans, laws, ordinances are EVERYWHERE (See below).

Yet, more than half of the 350+ women over the age of 50 in the Monterey Bay peninsula without homes HAVE dogs and still, in “dog friendly” Carmel, they are told to get rid of their mutts. As if it is the dog’s fault that THERE IS NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING and very LOW WAGES. And 49% of Seniors are Living in Poverty in the USA.

Women live longer than men, make less money than men, and get less Social Security retirement funds. Women also make easy prey for predators. Especially sick and elderly women. But hey, those bag ladies must have DONE SOMETHING WRONG to deserve living on the street. Some jerk on Facebook actually said something to that effect to me, that these people did not save up enough money so it’s their own fault.

Nope, the lazy, drunk, drug addicted, crazy people (it is easy to see how AFTER you lose your home and are treated like a nonexistent go away piece of trash that you THEN become mentally ill and / or start drinking or taking drugs) is a myth and stereotype used by some so that NOTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE OR CHANGED.

Now, women without homes need dogs for protection and companionship. Plus, it has been shown that people without homes will feed their pets BEFORE they feed themselves. People without homes Deserve EVERYTHING YOU DO, a home, a bad, a place to BE, food, health care and a DOG/Pet of their own choice. How DARE anyone tell another person what they should or not have.

Just ask Richard Gere the actor what it is like to be homeless. He did a movie Time Out of Mind in New York where he was dressed up as a homeless man.

“I could see people from two blocks away decide to avoid me. Whether they were conscious of it or not, they were like: I know that guy. And they filled in all the other things that one needs to know to have a reaction. They decided, OK, this guy’s gonna be asking me for money, and I don’t really want to give him any money. In fact I don’t want to make any contact with him…”

Now, Pets of the Homeless, a nonprofit organization in Carson City, Nevada has a different attitude and idea. They actually help to Feed the dogs of people without homes, all over America. And help to get vet care, spay and neuter and other care plus support shelters allowing pets. While I DO NOT think that shelters are the Answer to End Homelessness, because warehousing people is NOT an answer. There is NO PRIVACY nor DIGNITY in shelters. Plus, too much money is spent on salaries and buildings and not enough ON THE PEOPLE WHO NEED HOMES.

People should have HOMES. Their OWN HOMES. And some communities are creating tiny home villages and apartments and low income housing for seniors, but not enough to meet demand. And the thing is that taxpayers are paying THREE TIMES MORE per person per year to NOT HOUSE people. That is right. And some states Utah, Oregon, and others are ahead of the curve in providing HOMES and apartments for homeless people.

AND a 9 year old girl in Washington is building tiny homes and growing food and giving them all to the people in her community in need. If she can do this, then why can’t ADULTS with MONEY do the same ????

Now onto the personal aspect of all of this:

In 1996, I went through a divorce, lost a job, three crucial family members passed on leaving me a virtual orphan, was rear ended in a car accident, and then was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and told there was no cure, just grin and bear it (all of the pain and horribleness). Called this my Job experience.

And thought that was the worst year EVER.

Until this one hit and here are just a few of the highlights…

At the beginning of January, I finally had a home to move into, for ten days. Person turned out to be a very scary crackpot, to say the least.

At the end of January, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Not having a home was a bit of a problem (a BIG problem) to having surgery.

But then the newspaper, doggie mamas came through BIG TIME and so did BADRAP and I was given a few weeks breathing space to get through the surgery.

It was crucial for us to have a home after surgery, a place to rest, heal and recover. Instead, I moved into a place with someone with a dog who had an agenda, to steal the Breast Cancer Support Group money that was given to me. We lived there two weeks. Happy recovery, not.

Decided to move back to Carson City, Nevada, because it is cheaper and perhaps I could get a place of my own. Did not really find one so I moved in with a cowgirl and her three Jack Russells. Seemed all very positive, hot springs, Cici learned how to use a doggie door and became part of a dog pack, and then the doggie poop hit the fan when the cow girl decided instead of allowing me time to rest and recover, it was time for me to become her housekeeper with lists of 20 things to do every day. What?

Desperate for rest and my own space and place, I accepted the offer of a very kind and generous doggie donor of a camper for Cici and I to live in. A mobile home on the road. Ok, what did I know about such campers? And with a very light budget, plus a bunch of campers having passed through our paws, we got a popup camper that has to be cranked, unhitched and has caused me to become unhinged hauling it around, decimating bushes and walls and other items in its way. (It really should be mandatory for people to have lessons on how to drive these things BEFORE they buy one).

Not knowing where to go or what to do again, I headed to the 101 from Reno. A little time with the trees, perhaps? Oh yes, there were fires, smoky twisty windy roads, lots of road work, 100+ degree temperatures and 30 minutes with the trees. What a trip. And no place affordable to park the camper.

Back to Monterey, where we were living for five years. And it seems to have become totally worse for people without homes. Bans, ordinances, all terrible decimating peoples rights.

imagine if you were at risk of being thrown into jail every time YOU went to sleep, ate food, went to the bathroom or TRIED TO SURVIVE in hot or cold weather, in the rain, outside in the elements.

What would you do? What would your mother, sister, granny, or aunt do?

It is not only unconstitutional, illegal and/or immoral to have these bans in place all over the USA, but it is cruel and unusual punishment according to the Department of Justice.

But hey, too many cities are still putting these laws on the books. Stealing people’s possessions to the tune of $250,000 in Salinas (why build affordable housing when you can take away what little someone has, charge them to get it back and profit off of their misery?). No overnight parking or camping in Marina (Just because everyone else in the area is jumping off the roof, so the Mayor decided to go ahead and be part of the doggie pack and make it a criminal offense to sleep in his town). Do not sit and lie down in public in Monterey. Yup. You heard me. It is also illegal to FEED people in public in 33 cities across America.

In Carmel. we got a very hard wake-up call there which I will tell you about in a minute.

We went back and forth between Monterey and Paso Robles, where we discovered a few resources, like a place to sleep at night in the Jeep not the camper.

I did not mention the fact that I have tried to sell the camper and got offered half of what was paid for it which would leave me with NOTHING to buy a new camper with. The kind of camper we need is the kind that is easy to manage, that we can pull over by the side of the road, open a door and go to sleep.

Nor that I was robbed, scammed and had to call the police to get the scammer out of the camper (we popped up for three nights at a hot springs in Paso Robles). It is rustic, to say the least. And the hot springs pool itself very good for the healing of the body.

Well, I also did not say anything about the guy who smashed the Jeep and camper into a fire truck.

Need I go on? (How am I still standing????) well, am barely hobbling. My feet hurt so bad.

And just last week, I found out that the dearest person in my life is now in the hospital, just had an operation and is very very ill.

Was in and out of the ER all October where they told me I have blood clots on my lungs. And the doctors take one look at me and dismiss my condition because well, after all, I am fat and without a home, so that makes me a nobody and certainly not a person of worth who deserves health care. Bye bye bye.

Plus, there is more that I cannot even discuss or go into. Remember, I told you ONLY the highlights.

Now onto yesterday…

I woke up from sleeping in my Jeep after too many nights doing the same feeling sicker and sicker. And since the ER doctors have the attitude mentioned above, getting treated with disdain is not exactly what I seek so I just left after the social worker gave me the usual BS.

Banging your head against the wall time and time and time again is not as much fun as it supposed to be.

Well, I was in Carmel and went over to the Starbucks. I could hardly walk my feet felt like burning hot coals and I was barely able to make it to the Jeep, get Cici. I needed help feeding her. I had food and a bowl in the car but could not manage the supplies and her. I let her walk, I could barely walk with her so I sat down. And felt dizzy and like I was going to faint.

I saw someone I had seen there before, who had seemed like a dog friend. And asked her to please help me feed Cici, go to the car, get her food and bowl. She ignored me and walked away. Ok. So then a guy came along and I asked him the same. He kept right on going to his car. As if I did not exist. He heard me but just kept on walking. So then I asked another woman and the same lack of response.

At which point, I lost what little left I had of sanity and started crying and yelling. Of course, these kind folks in doggie paradise went right inside to tell Starbucks on me because they could not ignore me, me and my doggie dilemma had nothing to do with them, was not their problem, and Cici and I were interfering with their coffee time. Someone came out and told me to leave. I told her that I could barely walk. We had a few more choice words and she said that if I did not leave, she would call the police. I told her to please go ahead and call 911 and whoever else. She did.

Then we had a big party.

In the midst of all the chaos of fire rescue, paramedics and police, who were all asking me the same questions making my already dizzy head spin off its axis, the kindness man showed up. He took care of Cici, fed her, walked her and offered to take her for me if / when I went to the hospital.

Ahhh, the light at the end of this very long tunnel. ONE doggie lover left in Carmel.

ONE kind stranger. No, there were two others. A gal from Seattle, who helped me and a worker at Starbucks who was leaving, gave me her breakfast sandwich and told me that they should NEVER have treated me like they did. Well duh. Other people who were very very kind to me recently include the manager of Panera’s Bread in Sand City, the church we held at Starbucks in Pasos Robles with Sandi, Linda and the other gals, and several more who have answered the call to help a ‘friend’ in need.

ANYONE with a brain, eyes to see, and ears to HEAR could SEE that here was a person in CRISIS who was SICK and needed assistance. Well, why be kind to that person when you can deny, ignore, or police and threaten them ???

That is it, America. The sad truth of what is happening EVERY DAY, EVERY HOUR, EVERY MINUTE to 3 million PEOPLE across America. Good, decent, hard working Americans, too.

an honest man who found a purse filled with $1,700 and went out of his way, while homeless himself, to return the money to its rightful owner.

Like 82 year old Kelli who lived in her van for three years. Elderly women, single moms with kids, veterans, and hard working people not making enough money to afford the ever increasing rents in every city. People in San Francisco have to make $175,000 to pay $4,500 a month in rent. San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have declared emergencies in their respective cities in regard to the overwhelming number of people somehow living without homes.

Yes, our furry friends deserve homes and SO DO THEIR OWNERS and FRIENDS !!!!

Millions of dollars are raised for our doggies and KITTIES and they deserve the Love and Care AND what about the people who are their families??? Do they not deserve HOMES and a Helping Hand Up, so that they can take care of their pets and not have to choose between food and rent or health care and their dog ????

According to AARP, Approximately 19 million low-income 50+ households in America cannot afford their housing costs and/or live in inadequate housing.

According to Medicare, nearly half of all seniors (48%) live in poverty today, especially in: DC (59%); California (56%).

Dog Friendly Dudes Dads Day

June 15 is Father’s Day. A DUDE ranch that is pet friendly may be the perfect place for a dad and his dog to vacation. Here are a few (that we have not visited). But sound like good places to get along little doggies, get along.

Echo Valley Ranch and Spa in British Columbia, you can bring your dog when staying in their Deluxe Cabins. The Canada dude ranch charges just $20 per night for dad and best friend’s dude ranch vacation.

The Resort at Paws Up in Montana welcomes dogs for a luxury dude ranch vacation.

The BarW in Montana $15 a night for dogs or no charge with a package.

Just 16 miles south of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the Spotted Horse Ranch is a all-inclusive guest ranch, catering to horseback riding and fly fishing. They offer packages as short as three night in May, early June, September and October or the typical seven night stay and they are pet friendly.

Shadow Mountain Guest Ranch in Granby, CO seems to be one of the few dude ranches in Colorado that does not seem to restrict dog breeds, but call first to make sure as it is two hours from Denver, which has a breed ban in place. Stays include hearty breakfasts, lodging in a comfy cabin. They do require a small fee for your pooch.

Burnt Well Guest Ranch in New Mexico is a working cattle and sheep ranch which boasts 10,000 acres of high desert country.

Greenhorn Creek Guest Ranch, Quincy, California, just 70 miles from the Reno Tahoe Airport, offers horseback riding, fishing and hiking in rustic ranch setting. located near the Feather River Canyon in the beautiful High Sierra mountains of Plumas County.

Here are 12 of our favorite spots for dog friendly trips for dad, dog and the whole family in various cities in the west USA.

Lincoln City, OR offers an abundance of pet-friendly lodging and restaurants where dogs are welcome at outdoor tables.

Play: For a fun frolic with your pooch, head for the coastline. In addition to the 7 1/2 miles of pristine Lincoln City beach, try Spring Lake Trail just west of the Regatta Grounds or Drift Creek Falls. Most Ocean lake shops will allow well-behaved pets on leashes if you ask. Remember, keep your pets on leashes and clean up after them. The annual Mutt Masters Dog Show and Olympics is a fun dog show that raises funds for two “doggie related” causes annually!

Stay: Captain Cook Inn is a fully restored and refurbished motor court. Although not too many still exist, motor courts were a style of motel very popular in the 1940′s and 50′s where you park your car directly in front of your room. RIP sweet Lucas

An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that who ever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each other’s hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: “UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”

“Of all the pit bulls in Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels, Lucas was the baddest of them all — Mike Tyson, Hulk Hogan and a little Ray Lewis rolled into one, the grand champion, the most vicious of the vicious Vick dogs.

“When his dog-fighting operation was busted, Vick was sent to prison and so, in a sense, was Lucas. The court shipped him and 21 of his fighting mates from Virginia to this sprawling, 3,800-acre animal sanctuary outside Kanab, with the stipulation that Lucas spend the rest of his days here. It was your basic life sentence.

“That was in January 2008.

“Nearly four years later, or 28 by his reckoning, Lucas is running the place.

“Open the door to the executive offices, and there he is, a smile on his face, a lick on his lips, and eager anticipation of either a pet or a treat written all over his eyes.

“Only the fading scars on his neck and face suggest that he was once the toughest, scariest and most-abused dog in Virginia.

“What we needed to prove was that man could be dog’s best friend as much as dogs could be man’s best friend.”

V-dogs magical reunion at Best Friends

If this doesn’t make you cry with joy, I don’t know what will… bring tissues with you…

Six of the 22 dogs taken in by Best Friends Animal Society … Mel, Cherry Garcia, Little Red, Handsome Dan, Oscar, and Halle had a ball at their 2013 five year reunion. About 150 to 200 people came to the event’s meet and greet to celebrate with the families and dogs. All the dogs were very well behaved and enjoyed being with one another.

Years ago at Bad Newz Kennels, Michael Vick and his cohorts terrorized, traumatized and abused these dogs, made them fight or used them as bait and left them unsocialized and afraid on chains. Their loving caretakers at Best Friends and adopted families have helped them recover and heal with lots of TLC and the difference between how the criminals and humans treated them shows and speaks volumes. The dogs were NEVER the problem. The dogs were NEVER mean nor vicious nor aggressive. The dogs were NEVER violent.

“47 dogs, according to the federal grand master’s count, were taken in the 2007 raid, from which the 22 toughest cases were brought to the Best Friends sanctuary. Best Friends proposed that the dogs could be rehabilitated or, at the least, deserved care and feeding for life… this was the first time the courts ever allowed dogs confiscated from a fight ring to not only be individually evaluated and rehabilitated, but also to be eligible for adoption. Until then, the protocol for fighting dogs seized was destruction, it was considered that you couldn’t take the fight out of the dog once it was bred or instilled.”

“Five years ago … these same six dogs were brought together in a very different circumstance,” Hunter said, “they were brought together by criminals who had very bad intentions for them – the same dogs, but a different set of people. Today … these same exact six dogs are brought here together by six loving families who want the best for them, and the circumstances are very very different. The dogs are exactly the same and as you look around you can see the results.”

Little gets held like a baby by McKenzie Garcia who helped to rescue her and bring her to safety at Best Friends.

It was also announced that Little’s mom Susan is adopting one of the Handsome Dan foster dogs Jewels, who got along famously with Little at the reunion. Jewels and Little are now sisters!

During the presentation at the meet and greet, the adopters shared about how magical their experiences with the dogs has been helping the dogs heal on a day to day basis… how the dogs have learned how to live life as part of a loving family.

At the same time, their former owner was going to do book signings at Barnes and Noble but they were canceled due to protests by animal lovers.

Many thought they were dangerous fighting pit bulls that should be put to death for everyone’s safety. Others looked at them and saw hope. You know you want to visit Best Friends. It’s a gorgeous scenic place and wonderful for animal lovers. The Red Rocks are what I remember most fondly as well as the general ambience. Happy dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses, burros and all kinds of critters live here. And now, a few of the former V dogs do, too. Happy at home in this 33,000 acre sanctuary, the largest no-kill in the USA. Best times to visit are Fall and Spring… In between seasons, before winter and summer. It gets very hot in summer and cold in winter. Be sure to take a tour of the property to get the lay of the land and eat at least one yummy healthy organic meal… filled with camaderie.

Kanab is a very small town about an hour away from St. George in southern Utah. St. George, Cedar City, Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon North Rim are nearby.

While you are touring or volunteering at the sanctuary, it is important that your pet remain contained in a safe and comfortable place. BF does not offer any kind of “day care” for visiting pets. So if you want to bring a pet, please make your own arrangements. (Your car is not an option during the warm season.) The one exception is for people who are visiting the sanctuary for the purpose of adopting a pet. In this case, they strongly encourage you to bring other pets with you to the adoption area (only), in order to introduce your pets before finalizing an adoption. Many of the motels in Kanab will allow pets, as long as they are supervised. Additionally, there is a pet store in town, Critter Corner, that sells premium food and supplies.

Zion National Park
“The brightest star next to the seat of God” aptly designates this park, one of the grandfathers of the national park system. Zion Canyon, up to 2,400 feet deep in places, cuts its way through the multi-color sheered cliffs and monolithic sandstone formations that define the region. Zion’s beauty is accessible the entire year with easy interstate access from Salt Lake City, Las Vegas (about 3-4 hours away), and the surrounding areas. A hiker’s and photographer’s paradise, Zion National Park is the cornerstone of the Zion – Bryce Canyon – Grand Canyon triangle.

At Zion, leashed pets are permitted on the Pa’rus Trail. Pets should not be left unattended in campgrounds. Essentially, this means that if you take your pet into the parks they can be with you in the campgrounds and inside your vehicle, and you can walk them in parking areas, but that’s about it.

Although pets are not permitted on practically any of the trails or in the backcountry in Bryce Canyon and Zion national parks, those traveling with their dogs can hike with them over miles of trails administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, adjacent to both national parks. Pets are also welcome, even on trails, in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (administered by the BLM) and in Utah’s state parks.

Popular consensus holds that the recession is negatively affecting most Americans (the 99%). Yet pet owners are still managing to spoil their pets even in this economy. Pet friendly accommodations include low or no pet fees, lots of amenities including pet tags, beds, treats, lots of room to walk the dog, potty waste bags, pet menus, and lodging that offers pet friendly perks such as pet massage, yoga (doga) classes, doggie gyms, a pet mascot, pet friendly concierge and other hotel employees and a location nearby to dog parks, dog beaches, dog friendly wineries, and/or other dog friendly places and activities. Other amenities offered at pet friendly hotels include Spa treatments for dogs. And high-end toys, jeweled collars and their own wardrobes. Even camp, gourmet treats, a water bowl and fresh bottled water.

Hotels that are pet tolerant (as opposed to friendly) with restrictive policies (weight and breed restrictions), high pet fees, and low on amenities do not get as much pet traffic as pet friendly hotels.

Spending on pet services, such as grooming, boarding and day care, is expected to top $3.65 billion. Brands from Old Navy to Paul Mitchell and Omaha Steaks all have pet lines now, according to the American Pet Products Association.

Owners Steve and Connie Segner built a luxury boutique hotel with the idea of catering to discerning guests and their pets. Segner has had a longtime involvement in the pet care industry, as owner of a pet food company and developing one of the first premium dog foods in the industry. Seattle, Washington

The Hotel Vintage Park in Seattle loves four-legged companions and welcomes pets of all shapes and sizes at no cost. Additionally, they provide:

-doggie welcome board (dog-shaped chalkboard welcoming each dog at the hotel)

-dog sitting and grooming

-turndown service just for dogs

The housekeeping staff will create a dog-shaped towel at turndown service, complete with sunglasses and a bone with the dog’s name on it.

Take the Dog for a Hike

The pet-friendly Blue Heron Bed Breakfast on Orcas Island is offering a spring break special for dogs. Owners pay, dogs are free! Hike Turtleback Mountain behind the Blue Heron one day and Mt. Constitution at Moran State Park the next day. Binoculars, water, homemade granola, and dog bones are provided for the hike. Room rates are $95 to $145. Pets are free. Valid 4/1/11 through 4/30/11. YOU MUST MENTION “HAVE DOG BLOG WILL TRAVEL” TO RECEIVE THIS PACKAGE.

The San Juan Islands of Washington State – Lopez, Orcas and San Juan are only 30 minutes from Seattle by air, or two-and-a-half hours by car and ferry. Dogs are welcome on Kenmore Air seaplanes/wheeled planes and on Washington State Ferries.

Pyramid Lake, Nevada

Located about an hour from Reno. It is a great place to camp out with your dog, if the weather is good. Unlike Lake Louise, Lake Tahoe and other famous lakes, Pyramid Lake is a completely natural environment. The Paiute people take a lot of pride (and care) in the lake, and they are reluctant to turn it into the next Lake Tahoe. The Lake is 125,000 acres, lots of beach to explore. There are no homes or businesses crowding around the lake. The land around the lake is home to several caves with ancient petroglyphs, and artifacts.

Be sure to visit The Stone Mother. There have been reports of people hearing the cries of an invisible baby when they’re at the Lake. Some have even heard the laughs of children. The legend: after traveling to Pyramid Lake to meet the man ruler of the lake, the Stone Mother was in awe. The man ruler was so handsome! They were married and had many children. Many of their children were unruly and the man ruler became angry. He decided to separate his children. The man ruler sent his oldest son west with one of the girls. They became the Pitt River Indians. He sent another couple east and they became the Bannocks. The remainder of the children stayed home. The woman was so upset over the separation that she wept.

Aside from the mysterious pyramid and Stone Mother, there is also a small island in the lake (close to the Pyramid). This island doesn’t look like anything special, that is until March/April each year when thousands of pelicans fly in. The pelicans hang out for a couple of months on the island so check them out.
You can purchase a pass for Pyramid Lake from most businesses in Reno or Sparks. Or, you can purchase your pass online. Day use passes cost just $6 per vehicle. There are also options for camping and fishing. It is dog friendly, dogs must be on leash, and you and Fido can camp out.

By the way, in Reno, there is a very peaceful haven of a lake Virginia Lake Park, where I took Cici a few times. She liked to chase the ducks. Dogs are supposed to be on leash. It is a peaceful place for a picnic or a walk with your dog in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.

2) The last few weeks of ski season, crowds are at a minimum and resort rates are lower

3) Once the mountain closes for skiing (approximately April 15), outdoor recreation options include mountain biking, hiking and fishing and the food scene is fantastic. Rates are more than 40% lower than during the winter months.

4) Park City is the home of the annual Sundance Film Festival in January and is popular for artists and is one of the most beautiful towns in America.
