To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic high-speed transatlantic passenger airliner, Breitling released the commemorative Navitimer Tribute to Concorde. In this week’s Since 1884 installment, we learn about the pinnacle of civil aviation—the supersonic aircraft known as Concorde. It incorporates several nods to the aircraft, from the dial’s deep blue hue—reminiscent of the sky of Earth’s stratosphere, to the limited run of 593 pieces—a reference to the Concorde’s Olympus 593 turbojet engines. This two-part series presents the Concorde experience from cockpit to cabin. This installment focuses on the cockpit, with the cabin featured next week.

May 24, 1962. Astronaut Scott Carpenter embarks on the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. On his wrist: a custom-made Breitling Navitimer with a 24-hour dial, later known as the Cosmonaute, the first Swiss wristwatch in space. During descent, his capsule overshoots the planned landing point by 250 miles (400 km), splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. While Carpenter lives to tell the tale, his Navitimer suffers water damage, oxidizing into a galaxy-like pattern that comes to represent this historic moment.
