As regular travellers might know, booking an international train trip today can quickly turn into a dauting task that will cost you hours, nerves and often, lots of money.
Notable obstacles include puzzling together your journey through different platforms, prices that can vary like crazy for the very same ticket and of course, the thorny question of insurance should you miss a connection.
As a result, 1 in 4 Europeans say they’re having trouble booking trips that involve multiple train operators. And another 43% don't even consult available train options in the first place…
International train journeys "still too difficult"
Now, luckily, such booking nightmares should soon be a thing of the past! After years in the works, the European Commission has said it will present a new “Single Digital Booking and Ticketing" regulation by the end of this year.
Its aim: to make booking an international train trip as easy as it currently is for a plane, and thereby encourage more sustainable modes of travel.
"Cross-border train travel is still too difficult for many citizens", wrote Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in the political guidelines for her second term last year.
"People should be able to use open booking systems to purchase trans-European journeys with several providers, without losing their right to reimbursement or compensatory travel."
ChatEurope speaks to Victor Thévenet, rail programme manager at Brussels NGO Transport and Environment (T&E), to find out what this will actually change for your next European trip in the video above.
