You Know, Those Philly Debate Questions, Maybe Not A Bad Thing

April 17, 2008

I had to work today, so en route I had a chance to listen to the righty talk radio personalities gloat over what happened last night in the Democrat’s debate, as well as their mocking of the various lefty blogs and op-ed columnists’ whining about it.   So, I figured that I’d check out some more of the reactions and post a few thoughts…

I’ll admit that, at first, I was pretty dismayed that ABC’s Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous spent so much time focusing on the sort of trivial tabloid-esque “issues” such as flag pins, Bosnia gaffes, and yet another trip down Wright avenue, instead of focusing on the actual issues (you know, the ones that the candidates feature on their campaign sites, like Iraq, immigration, national security, etc.).  And throughout the day on memeorandum, I saw plenty of commentary from blogs echoing that sentiment.   But the more I thought about and read and digested all this, the closer I came to the conclusion that this wasn’t really that bad.  In fact, maybe Stephanopoulos and Gibson did the Dems a big favor.

This epiphany came when I revisited No More Mister Nice Blog, which had a post titled “THE REPUBLICAN TALKING-POINT DUMP, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE DEMOCRATIC DEBATE“.  I came to realize that the title described what happened pretty accurately.  If there are these various talking points out there (and Hannity won’t shut up about them, trust me), wouldn’t it be better to just put it all on the table, let them respond to them on the public stage, get it out of their collective systems and then put it behind them sooner rather than later?   If, as Rush Limbaugh mentioned today, those things are going to come up in the general election, would it be such a bad thing to have addressed them preemptively?  In the very least, it’s practice (for both of them), and if they weren’t paying attention to this stuff before, they sure as heck will now, so it would make it harder for the 527’s and others to blindside them with it and force them to waste countless dollars shooting back when they’d otherwise be spending it making their distinctions known on the real stuff.

Also, this is the 21st debate.  I suppose one could make the argument that the majority of the policy differences between Obama and Clinton have been covered by now.  From that perspective, it’s a little harder to view the first 45 minutes of the session as a complete waste of time.

So, how did Obama handle it?  Fairly well, in my opinion, although he could have done better.  It was clear that he really didn’t want to go down this road, ’cause at times he didn’t look entirely comfortable and even slightly perturbed.   But he made it through, and at this point what he should do is brush it off…

…and move on.

Send ‘Em To Boot Camp

April 13, 2008

I don’t watch a whole lot of daytime TV anymore, but I was pretty intrigued by this story I discovered over at Skippy’s place:

The TV talk show Dr. Phil McGraw confirmed on Saturday the fact that its staff bailed out of Florida jail one of the girls involved in the violent video posted on YouTube. The video depicted several teen girls beating one of their classmates while filming her.

Mercades Nichols is one of the eight teen girls who face charges in the case of the vicious beating posted on YouTube. She was bailed out by a representative of the show on Friday night, MyFOXTampaBay.com reported.

The bails for the violent girls were set on Friday and they are ranging from $30,000 to $37,000. The girls are aged from 14 to 18.

The bailing out was confirmed via e-mail by Terri Corigliano, a show spokeswoman. In his e-mail, Corigliano explained that the show has previously helped other “guests and potential guests” of the show with different needs, but in this case “certain staff members” who were in the process of booking guests for the Dr. Phil McGraw show went a bit too far and broke the rules of the show.

Initially, I thought that this was pretty outrageous, given the fact that Dr. Phil was essentially giving these kids the fame and notoriety that they had craved by posting this heinous stunt on YouTube in the first place.  The more I thought about it, however, the more I felt that perhaps my views were being tainted by my utter dislike for Dr. Phil himself (I’d say that I had considered him to be one of the top 10 most annoying people on TV, right in front or behind Ryan Seacrest, depending on my mood).  Eventually, I came to the conclusion that I would be OK with this sort of sacrifice to the almighty TV ratings god if, and only if, I knew that after being subjected to a jeering studio audience, the kids would eventually be confronted by this guy:

CNN’s War On Autism

April 3, 2008

I often have CNN on in the background while blogging on my laptop, and I couldn’t help but notice that since I got home from work, they’ve been talking about autism for the past 2 hours.  Nonstop.  Anderson Cooper, Sanjay Gupta, and, just a few moments ago, Larry King asked the parents of 6 autistic children why they keep reproducing (can I get a *gasp*?).   And here is a current screenshot from the front page of their website:

cnnautism.jpg

Look, I’m as sympathetic to the plight of autistic kids and their parents as the next guy, but seriously…2 hours?  Is it Autism Awareness Month or something?  Maybe I should check….

Yep, it is.

But still, what’s going on?  Someone high up in the media food chain obviously made a decision to launch a mini-crusade here.  More searching….

…Oh

3/14/2008 – CNN Announces Global Coverage for First World Autism Awareness Day Multiplatform Effort Will Report on Science, Intervention and Resources for Parents on Wednesday, April 2(there’s a lot more than just 2 hours)

The “Name An Accomplishment” Game

February 15, 2008

As of late, it’s been hard to peruse the talk radio and blog punditry for too long without running into this fun exercise.  The rationale?  Probably a few things, actually.  One, it turns the focus of the political debate to Obama’s perceived inexperience and lack of substance in his speeches.    Two, publicly belittling and marginalizing his supporters might result in second-guessing for those watching at home. Three, all this may be viewed as the only defense against Obama’s charisma, energy, and the social movement forming around him.

As for the major players, you’ll find the usual suspects, but no one enjoys this game more than Sean Hannity:

The fallacy with this game is that you can play it with just about any candidate out there.  Ask your average McCain supporter on the street to name an accomplishment, and you’d probably get a response that had something to do with his status as a war hero, if anything.  What about Huckabee?  Clinton?

It certainly doesn’t mean that people are stupid, but rather that the focus of debates and campaign speeches tends to center around ideas on current issues and policies.  Congressional voting records usually get a secondary look and are sometimes misleading, but even sponsoring legislation doesn’t come to most people’s minds when one is forced to think of an “accomplishment”.  Nor would the usual “fought for” or “stood alongside” rhetoric found in your typical political campaign ad.  Very rarely do you see candidate with a specific accomplishment that uniquely qualifies an individual to take on the U.S. presidency anyway.  And I’ve long argued that the people who do have the resume for the office are the people who don’t want the job.

In all likelihood, the “name an accomplishment” test would have been failed by average Americans on all sides for the last 100 years.

But it sure is fun!  And I’d expect to see a lot more of it as Obama gets closer to winning the nomination.

(for a little more fun, and in the spirit of the debate over relevant accomplishments that make a good president, take a look at the FACTS ABOUT GEORGE DUBYA BUSH THAT YOU MIGHT BE UNAWARE OF….. TAKEN FROM HIS RESUME )

Conservative Talk Radio Has Become Almost Comical Lately

February 7, 2008

I have a confession.  I listen to conservative talk radio virtually every day.  I know this is something that may sound unusual coming from an Obama supporter, but it’s true.  Depending on my schedule, I’ll listen to about a half hour of Rush on the way to work, maybe 15 minutes of Hannity during lunch, and usually our local guy Jason Lewis for another half on the way home.

Some may ask: why Chen?  Well, I like it, that’s why.  Rush is actually a pretty bright guy.  A pompous, arrogant blowhard, but bright, and he’s generally able to deliver the political news in a fairly entertaining way.  Hannity, on the other hand, always sounds like he’s following a script, and regurgitates the same talking points over and over.  But, still, he’s a “Great American™”.  (when I say “lately” in the post’s title, I should exclude Hannity; he’s pretty comical regardless)  Jason Lewis, as a Minnesotan, delivers his take on the day’s events from a local perspective, and can generally be counted on to get on a nice rant that barely keeps all the rails on the track.  (I listen to the likes of Medved, Hewitt, Prager, Levin, Beck, Ingraham, etc. every once and awhile too, but those three are my main course)

Anyway…

These last few weeks have been particularly entertaining.  Rush seems almost obsessed with either McCain’s lack of conservatism, or the fact that the media is talking about said obsession.  Hannity has become almost like one of those pull-string Chatty Cathy dolls, but instead of “I love you” he just says “McCain/Feingold” …”McCain/Kennedy”… “Gang of 14” ….”Amnesty”… “McCain/Lieberman”… in random order every few minutes, or he’ll just rattle them off in rapid succession again for the next caller.  Lewis, inspired by Rush (and on occasion filling in for him), wraps up the afternoon by reiterating the same meme that the Republicans are abandoning conservatism, and McCain’s rise to front-runner is an embodiment of this.

In other words, it’s been a 8-hour McCain bash-fest…in crystal clear FM sound.

So, you can guess what the shows were like today, the day after McCain all but secured the GOP nom.  I gotta tell ya, I couldn’t wait.  These guys had to go on the air and put on a show while somehow coping with the realization that, in spite of weeks of their best and arguably obsessive use of rants and spin against McCain, the supposed influence that makes Rush so arrogant amounted to pretty much… diddly squat.

It was a tough day for them, I’m sure. On the plus side, maybe ratings were better.  Nobody can help but watch a train wreck, after all.

Needless to say, imagine my surprise when I saw this post pop up on memeorandum today:  WHY TALK WON

But what really counts is that so many people, including the mainstream media and politicians, care what talk hosts think and who they are supporting. Conflicts between talkers and candidates have recently made headlines.

Now that’s how you spin something!  Seriously though, Think Progress summed it up pretty well:

Maloney is right that quite a few media stories have covered hate radio’s beef against McCain. But that’s because the media are always interested in the tragic demise of once powerful figures.

The media loves the tragic demise?  I suppose it would explain the fact that Fox reported the latest on Britney Spears during the Glenn Beck show.

Anyway, after this, maybe the media will stop assuming that these guys have influence and just ignore them, and let me have my infotainment without getting all analytical about it.

Update:  McCain wants Dittoheads to “calm down”, while apparently offering a fig leaf: McCain seeks truce with right-wing critics

The campaign, as described by Republican sources, has two pillars: outreach to talk-radio hosts and other conservative critics and a succession of high-profile endorsements in the coming days.

The effort to win over, or at least blunt the opposition, of talk-radio hosts and other movement figures who resent McCain’s maverick style and past departures from conservative orthodoxy involves both high-level surrogates and the candidate himself.

Any bets that McCain gets booed at CPAC? (that’s right, I’m callin’ it)

Update: LMFAO! CPAC to all CPAC-ers: Don’t boo McCain

“No, no no no no” came the reply from the person registering him. “We’ve been instructed to tell participants not to boo McCain.”

“Are you kidding me?” the shocked CPAC-goer asked.

“Well, we want to seem above Democrats and we don’t want the booing to be the story,” the CPAC person declared. When asked for a response, CPAC’s Ian Walters told us: “We would hope that our folks would be polite and give him a fair opportunity to be heard.”

Darnit!

Update:  Looks like the request was respected….sorta:

2:34 – A few boos on immigration, but a lot of cheers and a laugh from McCain. He says he respects the opposition because it was based in an honorable defense of the rule of law. He now understands that no one will trust Washington on immigration until they actually secure the border.

Eh…I still called it.

Update:  Fellow WPPBA blogger Joe makes a great observation and is well worth a link: Right wing establishment failed to deliver for Romney

Hollywood’s* Rambo Is Back

January 6, 2008

You may have seen the ads on TV, but if you weren’t aware, Sly Stallone has directed the 4th Rambo film (called, um, Rambo).  It’s release date is January 25th.

The question that’s probably on many people’s minds is:  Can a 60+ year old man really play an action hero effectively?

rambo1.jpgrambo4_04.jpg

So what happened here?  Did Stallone figure “Well, I got all in-shape for the new Rocky film, so I might as well make another Rambo“?  (before the HGH wears off, anyway).  Oh well, I’ve always liked those old Rambo movies, so maybe the mere existence of an addition to the series will tempt me into the theater, no matter how bad the reviews are or how ridiculous the premise might be.

I guess we’ll find out if John J. gets a chance “to eat things that would make a billy goat puke”. lol

*(I had to clarify, as I have another post titled Camp Phoenix’s “Rambo”)

…And Now For Some Billy Mays

December 28, 2007

These days, it’s hard to avoid the incredibly annoying pitchman named Billy Mays.  It seems that he shows up on just about any channel to SHOUT you into buying anything from the Hercules Hook to Samurai Shark to Lint-B-Gone.  You know, this guy…the new Mr. As-Seen-On-TV:

billymays1-small.jpg

From a salesmanship perspective, he’s obviously good at what he does.  To me, however, I don’t think there is anyone else on TV that forces my finger towards the channel + button on the remote as quickly.  So if you’re like me, you’ll probably get a kick out of this:

Also, be sure to check out the humorous comments and sound bites over at Billy Mays Mayhem.

And as long as we’re on the subject, I might as well try my hand at a Billy Mays impersonation for a little shameless self-promotion…

Noel Sheppard’s Favorite Adjective

December 18, 2007

As I mentioned a little while back, I was approved for an account on the righty media watchdog site NewsBusters.  I kinda like the site, so I hope that this post doesn’t put my membership in jeopardy.  After all, this is just an observation, but it didn’t take long for me to notice that Noel (one of the site’s prominent front-page contributors) appears to like to use the word “delicious” (or “deliciously”) when he posts:

Clinton Front Group Cherry-picks a Fight with NewsBusters

…More deliciously…

Matthews Panel Hates Hillary, Hearts Huckabee

…Deliciously, when Sullivan said…

Plummeting Ratings Cause NBC to Give Refunds to Advertisers

…As deliciously reported

NBC Lawyer Who Blocked Pro-Troops Ad Gives Generously to Dems

…How delicious…

And that’s just so far in December

The best variation I’ve seen?  Why, it has to be “exquisitely delicious“!

Of course, I couldn’t help but ponder the question:  What the heck is so yummy over there?

√ Thorough Wardrobe Analysis For Hillary Clinton

December 9, 2007

womens_suit1.jpgWhen it comes to a careful analysis of -and speculation about the psychological motivation behind- Hillary Clinton’s selection of attire, Robin Givhan at the Washington Post is on top of it.  Bigtime.  Today’s entry:  Wearing the Pants – Envisioning a Female Commander-in-Chief

The first graph:

The mind, so easily distracted by things mauve and lemon yellow, strays from more pressing concerns to ponder the sartorial: How many pantsuits does Hillary Clinton have in her closet? And does she ever wear them in the same combination more than once?

Ah yes, the latter is definitely the eternal question. Wait a second…does anybody really “ponder” such things? Robin goes on, and only gets sillier:

Is even considering the senator’s clothes a kind of chauvinistic assault? Or is it merely the intellect trying to wrangle some sort of order out of the imagination? Oh, the tumult!

It’s worth pointing out that this is apparently A-section material for WaPo. I suppose that, in the world of newspapers, this was a promotion for Givhan’s work. After all, her last journey into this fascinating realm landed in section C. Lots of bloggers remember that one: Hillary Clinton’s Tentative Dip Into New Neckline Territory

I think it’s safe to move on now. However, with 11 months left in the campaign, my money’s on Robin not being able to resist the temptation to pen an entire column on Clinton’s earrings.  Anyone want to give me odds?

The Dangers Of Hannitization

November 30, 2007

Evidence that the “Stop Hillary Express” may have turned into a Crazy Train: Man Takes Hostages At Clinton Campaign Office

Witnesses Say Man Has Bomb-Like Device Strapped To Chest

ROCHESTER, N.H. — An armed man has taken two campaign workers hostage at the Hillary Clinton campaign office in Rochester, police said.

As to be expected, the blogs are buzzing about this one, so here’s the memeorandum link if you want to catch all the reactions.

Hannitized?

Update:  There’s no evidence as of yet that this guy was a Hannity fan, so I sort of regret this post.  It was just the first thing I thought when I saw the story.  I was making light of what could have been a deadly serious situation, and I apologise for that.

Damn, Those Clinton Fact-Checkers Are FAST!

November 28, 2007

I noticed today that a good portion of both the cable news networks’ time and blogger’s bandwidth was spent analyzing Bill Clinton’s supposed “flip-flop” on his Iraq war position after he made the following comment during a speech in Iowa:

“Even though I approved of Afghanistan and opposed Iraq from the beginning, I still resent that I was not asked or given the opportunity to support those soldiers,”

The comment prompted Hannity & Colmes to do an entire segment “deconstructing” Clinton’s alleged rewriting of history and even started another spat with Senator Obama.

Sometime during my perusing of all these articles and analysis/spin, I recalled that the NY Times had a story about a new website that the Clinton campaign had established, as the Times described it, “dedicated exclusively to the instantaneous rebuttal of charges or news reports it deems offensive or wrong”.  It’s called “The Fact Hub“, so I decided to go over there to see if it had any, you know, facts to add to all this.  Sure enough, right there under “Latest Facts” was this: Fact Check: Bill Clinton On The Iraq War

After reading through a few of the Clinton quotes that were obviously posted to clarify his position on the subject, I glanced up toward the top and noticed the timestamp “11/27/2007 7:22:53 PM”.   This was, of course, yesterday.

Intrigued, I decided to do a little more searching to see when this story really got its legs.  Over on Memeorandum, the headlines about it didn’t appear until around midnight (from what I could quickly gather using their handy “snapshot” feature).  ABC’s article on the comment is on their Political Radar site and is timestamped “November 27, 2007 7:19 PM”.   Every other article or blog post I could find on the subject is dated November 28th, including a splashy headline on the Times’ site.

If anyone else can find an earlier posting that suggested that Clinton’s comment was raising eyebrows, post it here.  In the meantime, I guess I’m just left to conclude that either a) the Clinton camp knew this was going to be an issue, whether it be just out of wisdom or hearing some inside buzzing, or b) they were able to post a “fact check” to rebut an ABC blog post with a response time of 3 minutes.

“Instantaneous rebuttal”, indeed.

“Iraq For Sale”, For Free

November 23, 2007

I just finished watching the Robert Greenwald documentary about Iraq war profiteering, Iraq For Sale, on Comcast’s On-Demand service.   It was quite an eye-opening experience, and I’d consider it recommended viewing for any American taxpayer, regardless of political persuasion.  So, if you have Comcast cable and a digital set-top box, you should be able to view the film for no extra charge.  It’s in the on-demand section under “Free Movies!” (for a limited time, I presume), and is presented in it’s original widescreen format.  I just thought I’d let everyone know.
