A Book for Castaways UPDATED

Guess what? Carole Lake and Michael Boren have a new book out!   It is called Desert Island Stitches:  Volume One -- Ideas for Small Spaces and is the first in a series of little books that concentrate on stitches that Carole and Michael find very useful and which they'd take with them if they were planning on being stranded on a desert island.  (Hopefully one with a great hotel, room service, and a pool with cabanas and a bar.)

Sneak Peek Inside

The Desert Island Stitches:  Small Spaces book is divided into five sections: tent stitches, diagonal stitches, oblique stitches, straight stitches and cross stitches.  Above is a page I picked at random from inside the book so you could see what the diagrams are like.  It's 78 pages long and the diagrams are black and white and are not numbered.  Each page has multiple stitch patterns diagramed on it.  Carole says it is about the size of the Stitches to Go book, so it is definitely tote bag or briefcase-sized.

The book is intended to be something you flip through when you are looking for ideas for small areas.  Carole says, "It's for when you have that stupid little space and you want something flirty and cute but not out of proportion to the space."

Redecorating

As you can see, I'm redecorating Blog again, changing the color scheme from a Christmas red and green to a more neutral one. Blog isn't the flashiest thing around, but keeping things simple so that any set of eyes and any computer can view it easily is The Plan.   Much as I'd like to have something more magazine-like, I know that won't work for a substantial minority of Blog's readers so that's out of the question.

Oh, well, you can pretend I am cutting edge and fashionable, right?  Even though Blog is the visual equivalent of an old pair of sweat pants and a ragged sweater?  

Seriously, if your eyes or computer have trouble with the current or any future visual layout, please let me know by leaving a comment under the latest message or email me at chilly hollow at hot mail dot whatever.  That way I can adjust the look to make things more appealing to the greatest number.

Even if I am the fashion equivalent of Elmer Fudd.

How to Create A Sampler

Lorraine of Color Complements took Jo Christensen's book and her own hand dyed threads (but you can shop your stash) and created an original sampler of stitches. She taught herself new stitches, discovered ones she liked and would use again, and created something very pretty.   It's pretty easy, too!  So grab one of your stitch books and see what you can create.

A Free Four-Way Christmas Tree Pattern UPDATED

Kimberly has gifted us with a free chart she designed for Rainbow Gallery in 1999. Some things are classics and this four way Christmas tree with a star on top is one of them.  The little pattern between trees looks like an angel to me.  Hope you have time to stitch one or two of these for next year during the football games and after holiday relaxing time.

Dag Nab It

I meant to title this "Snag Nab It" as that's the tool I wanted to mention today but I flubbed the title and it's so funny, I left it.  The Snag Nab It is a needle with a spiral at the point end that carries loose threads from the front of a knitted fabric to the back.  The original use was to fix snags but we stitchers use it to carry loose thread ends to the back side.  The first section shows the needle in close up and how it is used on clothing.  Shop around as the prices vary.

Berdorf's Needlepoint Window for Christmas 2014

Lisa HK just posted photographs on Facebook she took of one of Bergdorf's Christmas windows in New York City.   She says that the window has both stitched and unstitched canvases that are portraits of literary figures.  The window also uses felting and macramé.

Tropical Jazz Revisited

Terry Dryden is having to scramble to pick up threads for her older Tropical Jazz kits now.  This is something that happens a lot to us stitchers as the small businesses that create our threads and other supplies run out of stock and can't afford to make more or can't get the necessary elements to make more.  Terry looks on this as Revisiting a design, and I think that's a good way to think of it.

Decorating Blog for Christmas

I may not have started decorating the house for Christmas but yesterday I finished decorating Blog!  For those with vision problems, I know red and green aren't the best choices but this is just for the holidays.  The trio of Christmas ornaments on the right side are things I've stitched over the years.  The tiny Maggie stocking is in honor of Lucky, my mother's cat.  Mrs. Santa Claus is from Joan Thomasson/Stitchin' Stuff, and the blue Santa is a free design I found somewhere and changed around to suit my whim.  I've already mentioned that the little stocking welcoming you to Chilly Hollow for the holidays is a Kathy Schenkel design, kindly stitched for me by Judie of Thistle Needleworks.

How To Finish Your Bunny

Hanging the Stocking on the Tree--Next to a Magnifier

Natalia of Natalia's Fine Needlework showed off a pair of her Christmas stockings on her blog this morning...,

...which reminded me that Melissa Boling of Miniature Home posed a great little lion and lamb stocking at the Needlepoint Nation group on Facebook.

These are all original designs, by the way, and done on silk gauze.  I don't know what count Natalia used but Melissa's little angel and animals stocking is on 48 count.

Natalia's stockings are available as kits or can be custom stitched for you.  I particularly like her snowflakes on red stocking but there are a lot of lovely designs available.

Janet Granger sells Christmas stocking kits that include 40 count silk gauze as well.  On this count, one ply of almost any brand of cotton or silk floss works well.   These pieces are done in tent stitches and are a lot quicker to stitch than a regular 18 or 13-14 count stocking.  Her Ho Ho Ho Santa stocking is great but I also love her Wise Men stocking as I adore Nativity sets.

Anne of ABS Designs has created an original design as a gift for friends.  As she stitches, she is using two different stitches and two weights of threads in the same color to differentiate the border from the center of the design.   I think this is very clever!

Snowball Fight!

Suzanne of the Hugs and Stitches blog just hit a home run with her latest canvas from Scott Church Creative/CBK. It's a squirrel caught in the middle of a snowball fight!

She got the dimension of the piece just right, balancing all the heavier elements like the tail and scarf and snowballs with heavier background and ground stitches.  Nothing really outshines any other part so that the entire design is unified.  This is the kind of thing we stitchers aim for--every bit is perfect and works with every other bit.

There isn't anything I don't love about this piece, from the beaded dimensional snowballs to the fluffy turkey work tale to the hand knit silk scarf.  Here is the original Scott Church needlepoint canvas, just to help you see how Suzanne brought this to life.

Merry Christmas!

Everything seems to be more hectic than usual this Christmas but I finally got Blog decorated for the holidays this morning.  The little stocking on the left side was a present from Judie at Thistle Threads in Connecticut about five years ago.  Isn't it darling?!   It's one of Kathy Schenkel's mini socks that come with felt things to put inside.  Judie's online shop at Alex Paras has many more to choose from.

The Stitcher's Tool Kit

While looking at the Access Commodities thread sets yesterday, I stumbled across their tool kit.

There are two types of pliers (used to break beads instead of ripping them out and for bending wires and pulling needles through heavy fabric), stainless steel scissors and wire cutters, and tweezers, this is the set for the serious needleworker who needs dedicated tools for specialty work such as stumpwork, beading and finishing.

All Souped Up (with Tapestries)

Anna Pearson does needlepoint classes all over the United Kingdom and as part of the classes, lunch is served.   Now the ladies who do the lunches have collaborated on a soup cookbook.  I'm not clear if the cookbook has needlepoint charts included or just photographs of the authors' stitching but regardless this is a different and interesting present for the stitching chef in your life.

Wonderful Stitches, with Your Host Diane

Wonderful Stitches: 320 Stitches for Needlepoint is a self-published book by Diane Schultz.  It's not a book I've ever seen although I've been aware of the various editions for a long time.  I just never got around to purchasing a copy.  That might have been a mistake!  I just found Diane's Wonderful Stitches website which not only promotes her book but has some lovely stitch diagram resources.

Take a little time to explore the site.  There's a free download of a sampler project (see right side of the page for the link),  and four pages of free diagrams in the "Pattern Collections" section found in the top navigation bar.  If you see an interesting stitch sample, click on it for the diagram.  Once you get to the diagram page, note that any compound stitches are diagrammed in several steps so you can see stage one, then the new stitch section in stage two, then the final diagram in stage three to make it easy to work the stitch in each step.

You can preview the first twenty-two pages or buy a copy of Wonderful Stitches via Lulu.  It is expensive at $87.02 but all self-published books with as much diagramming and color photos as this one costs to publish.  I don't know if shipping costs are included in the price.

Antique Needlepoint at the Musuem

Susan (you know her as Plays with Needles) have been to the "Diligant Needle" exhibit at Winterthur and came home with some great photographs of pieces that caught her fancy.  I am most interested at the second piece she admired, which is what with think of as Victorian needlepoint but with a difference.  The flowers and at least one butterfly are over stitched with filament silk in what we now call needle painting, giving emphasis and life to select areas of the design.

Actually, based on this overstitching I'd guess this is the work of a British stitcher as it appears to be heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement to my eyes.  Of course well traveled Americans would have see William Morris' work but somehow I think this is a domestic piece done by one of Morris' admirers in England.

There are several great ideas, like the chain and stem stitches that create the "eye" on the butterfly's wing and the stem and straight stitches that give detail to a leaf.  This indeed is one of the stitching ancestors of today's embellished needlepoint style!

Diagonal Tent Stitch - Diagonal Basketweave

Recently my buddy Marianne (of Newneedlepoint.com fame) asked me to look at a copy of a rare booklet by Katherine Ireys about basketweave called Diagonal Tent Stitch.   I had never seen this 1974 book before and found it fascinating.  I won't repeat what I said (just read the link below) except to repeat if you are interested in better technique in basketweave or are a left handed stitcher who wants to master basketweave,  this book and Davie Hyman's Diagonal Basketweave are books you should get your hands on whenever you see a copy.  They are classics.
