A Temple artisan

A Temple artisan

An elderly artisan works with his chisel and hammer to mend broken parts of this very ancient (1,000 plus year old) Shiva Ambarnath temple in Maharashtra, India. The architecture is in Hemadpanthi-styled, beautifully carved motifs such as gods, goddesses, musicians, elephants on stone. Dressed in his gently used clothes and sitting cross legged in the temple courtyard one monsoon morning this artisan is surrounded by his simple equipment – a small compass, chisel, hammer, cinder block, rope, cement and bricks. An eyeglass case is seen tucked near his waist. From a photo taken in summer of 2013.    © 2014
