Little Justices

A 50- something year old white woman arrived at her seat on a crowded flight and immediately didn’t want the seat. The seat was next to a black man. Disgusted, the woman immediately summoned the flight attendant and demanded a new seat. The woman said “I cannot sit here next to this black man.” The fight attendant said “Let me see if I can find another seat.” After checking, the flight attendant returned and stated “Ma’am, there are no more seats in economy, but I will check with the captain and see if there is something in first class.” About 10 minutes went by and the flight attendant returned and stated “The captain has confirmed that there are no more seats in economy, but there is one in first class. It is our company policy to never move a person from economy to first class, but being that it would be some sort of scandal to force a person to sit next to an UNPLEASANT person, the captain agreed to make the switch to first class.” Before the woman could say anything, the attendant gestured to the black man and said, “Therefore sir, if you would so kindly retrieve your personal items, we would like to move you to the comfort of first class as the captain doesn’t want you to sit next to an unpleasant person.” Passengers in the seats nearby began to applause while some gave a standing ovation.

Separatism Feminism

Image

I wouldn’t call myself a feminist, per say, but I notice and respect a lot of their causes.  I am all for women having equal rights, salaries, say over their own vagina, and whatnot…  However there is a great racial divide in the movement.  I rarely see white, black, brown, red, and yellow sisters fighting this cause together.  I recently read a blog in which a woman tried to  join a group called White Feminist Against Racism but she could not attend the meeting because she was black.  That’s like going to the beach and not wanting the sand to be there.  How could someone truly want to fight racism and sexism and truly understand how it affects its victims without communicating with the people who it affects?

We as women have a fight that is universal to all women.  Our bodies become property, abused, exploited, and even denigrated before some of us even reach the age of puberty.  We have sisters who are sold to the highest bidder for her virginity, prostituted and trafficked, clitoris removed and her vagina sewn shut, stoned for getting pregnant as a result of being raped, made to work in unsafe places for long hours for pennies, forced to raise children without fathers, beaten and raped without the protection of anyone….. The list goes on and on.

I raise this issue because I feel for women who have to face any hardship that she didn’t bring upon herself, no matter what the shade of her skin may be.

Love in the Color Black

Image

Why do people have to get their heart stomped, beat, burnt, and spit on before they realize the hurt they have caused the people that truly loved them? It’s a struggle to stay lovable when you have given out love that was never replaced. If it wasn’t for God, I don’t know where my search for love would have me right now. I know some sisters who have went to some low places looking for love, and it is only His grace that I have not.

Men need love too.  They are not emotionless creatures. They have been exposed to a culture that teaches them that emotions are weaknesses.  They can not be sad, hurt, or disappointed; only angry.  Angry gives respect, fear, and power, but only for a short time.  Angry destroys.  Anger that sometimes continue to fester and go unabated because of the lack of a lovable woman, whose love has been taken away from her by some other angry man.  Men cannot heal without the woman, and woman cannot heal without the men.

Mothers need to stop coddling their fatherless sons!  Mothers need to stop telling their fatherless daughters to be strong and independent! Tell them how to love! Men need to respect women and teach their sons to do likewise.  Mothers need to respect men and their role in our homes and communities, and teach their daughter to do likewise.  Men need to see every woman as a sister, a friend, a mother, and a daughter.  Only then will women see men as a brother, a friend, a father, and a son.  Coddled sons become dependent men who do not work, poor fathers for their children, and the reason that love dies.  Strong and independent daughters become lonely, angry, single mothers that don’t know how to love a man because they are trying to fill the role of a man and a woman for their families.  These strong independent women often end up taking care of these coddled sons, now men, who don’t work; drives her car; and has no respect for neither himself nor her.  He doesn’t help her with the bills and she struggles to take care of her family.  The cycle begins again as she teaches her daughter to be strong and independent, because she will have to fend for herself without the aid of a man.  Her sons, being taken care of right next to their infantile father, will continue the cycle as well…

Complicated….Love in the color black.  Our history remain our shackles.  Shackles that were placed there long ago and seem to have settled there with little rust or wear and tear.  Many of  us have one, strong shackle dangling off one leg, as we watch the media and live our lives in a racist society.  A racist society full of chaos that we are to live and work in peacefully.  Only love will help us.

Pruitt-Igoe Myth Documentary

Image

I watched this documentary early this morning and it broke my heart and set off so many light bulbs.  The most striking thing about the documentary is how it explains how housing projects are used as legal segregation tools in urban settings and helped white-flight occur in these places.  One of the stipulations for living in this housing project was that no man was allowed to live in the home.  Married couples with children could not live together to receive the benefits of having clean and affordable living.  Unfortunately, the clean and affordable part was very temporary for the families that lived there and the poor families that became victims of government-created poverty were blamed.  This documentary is a must see and I am seriously considering a study of public housing policy for my sociology major.  The documentary is currently available on Netflix.

Alabama pastor holds ‘whites only’ conference
By Ron Recinto | The Lookout – 9 hrs ago
WSFA.com: News Weather and Sports for Montgomery, AL.
A controversial pastor’s
conference welcoming only “white Christians” is underway in Lamar County, Ala., upsetting residents of the nearby town of
Winfield in the western part of the state.
Christian Identity Ministries is holding a three-day conference for so-called “white Christians” who contend they have been
treated unfairly, the Rev. Mel Lewis told local TV station WSFA. Lewis, the organizer and keynote speaker, says they have the
right, like any other Americans, to worship how they wish.
Ku Klux Klan flags and white supremacy slogans surround the conference, which will conclude with a cross being set on fire
Friday night. Organizers say it’s not a cross-burning, but rather sacred Christian cross lighting.
“We are not breaking any laws. We’re not violating any ordinances. We’re bringing the Word of God to people who want it,
obviously, or they wouldn’t be here,” Lewis told the TV station.
Lewis said of the conference-goers: “They are part of the chosen race.”
The mayor of nearby Winfield said residents are upset, and the event does not represent their town in any way.
“Business people are upset. The city is upset. The city of Winfield does not condone this,” Winfield Mayor Wayne Silas told
another local TV station, WECT.
“It’s surprising to see something like that in our town,” said Tyler Cantrell. “I know it’s been here in the past.”
Organizers say their ministry is not a hate group and that although there is a strong KKK presence, the Klan did not sponsor
the event.
