Calculating Your Home Solar Needs

Before you run out and spend what could be the equivalent to a used to new car on a shiny new solar system, you need to gather as much data as possible.

From your weather patterns, to sun direction, to your power consumption.

As one example, to cover one thing I have not observed in the mountain of literature I have consumed on this subject, is that solar panel placement is not a hard and fast rule.

As a example, where I live, morning is usually clear skies, and evening is more often hazy.  Or as now  it gets cloudy around noon and only clears around 5 which means that my panels are perfect for catching the sun from 6am to 330pm, it gets pretty much zero after that.  Yet  placing the panels in a more neutral position would likely get less power generated because of the local weather pattern.

Therefore, a more constant power supply thru the day would be 4 panels facing east like now, and 2 more panels facing the other direction to catch the sun from noon to sun-down.

My experience and location will not be yours so you will need to monitor and learn these things yourself.

One method you can do is set up a smaller system, one panel, inverter and a battery, like a 1000 watt inverter.  My little 1kw inverter has all the features of my house inverter minus the charge controller and was 90 dollars.

You can monitor the system and experiment with panel placement, gathering data before you splurge on the big system.

Another thing is monitoring your house power usage.

Previously I had zero knowledge of my house usage, except for the monthly bill.

I have discovered that houses like cars have a idle speed.

This is the power draw that my house has pretty much on average 24 hours a day.  In my case it is around 350 watts.  Which translates out to 8.4kwh approx. per day.  Your house could be more or less depending on lights, fridge, fans etc.

In my case I have a cheap 10 dollar sub meter for the overall usage, and another for the shore power.

By taking readings twice a day, and putting on a whiteboard, I can see who in the house is using the most power, and when.

Anyways, hope these solar articles are not getting too boring.

Is it Prejudice?

The hammer that leftists love to hit people over the head when we observe bad behavior in certain ethnic groups is "oh you are prejudiced"

Yet prejudiced means to pre-judge.

However if it is real world experience with ethnic groups, then it is no longer prejudiced.

As a example when I was working in Africa the local population was 90% drug addicted, terribly lazy, seldom bathed, and generally had a extremely low IQ.

We literally had on site a Hungarian imported for the sole purpose of running the trash incinerator and ensuring that the locals sorting the trash into recyclables or non recyclable, and keeping them from eating the garbage.

He was not too successful at the trash eating prevention as those workers were all fatter than Santa.

Equality Is

Equality is not pretending that bad behavior is acceptable because someone is black.

Plastic Recycling Project

Since no longer posting to the daily FB feed, I will post here more often.

One thing for the last couple years building plastic shredders, is that the output flakes of plastic are sometimes, well flakes.  This means that if I process a batch of used packaging material, the resulting product is loose fluffy and will not flow

By not flowing, I mean I can not simply pour it in the hopper of my machines, and it will feed into the extrusion screw.

One of my 20kilo per hour extrusion machine builds.

The conventional methods feed material into large extrusion machines, then out as long strings cooled by water, and then chopped into pellets.

However this still requires the stuff to go on the extrusion machine first which is the catch-22 as my stuff does not flow into the extrusion in the first place.

So I have embarked on a project to convert this normally unusable trash into pellets that can be molded to new things by using a feed pellet machine.

However, it turns out that you can not simply feed plastic into a pellet mill and get a usable end product.

I have gotten good results but there is techniques that need to be refined to make it work.  Variables such as feed rate of material in the machine, roller size, moisture, etc all need to be changed and adjusted to work.  Which has basically resulted in me and my crew feeding the machine in different manners while observing the output.

So far I have been able to fairly consistently pelletize plastic foam insulation. and half way pelletize packaging material.  The machine is basically a die with a roller that forces the plastic thru the holes and friction in the tapered holes makes heat which compresses and fuses the plastic bits into pellets.

I have not fed it into a extrusion machine yet as I robbed my personal extrusion machine of a part to finish a client order, and the replacement part is still at the machine shop.  However it should be tested this week.

Going Off Grid aka Grid Defection

 Solar Power World Grid Defection

Interesting point this article makes about Hawaii residents going off grid and only using the grid as backup, Which is where I am at now.

According to the article, Hawaii has even higher electric rates(30cents per kewh) by 1/3 than the Philippines.

I am not a green lefty by any stretch of the imagination and I know man made climate change is bullshit.

However not being dependent on big vampire corporations and the government fees that go with grid

tie is a very strong pull.

I literally have about 2000 dollars in parts in this system.  It is not as if this is a huge investment.

That said, living in northern climates, you will need more panels to equal the performance of my system due to shorter days, and more clouds.  But still, this is way cheaper than messing with a generator during extended power outages, and it is slow steady dollars you are keeping in your pocket every day.

NYC is in the process of "reopening" - but will the businesses come back? Many were on the way out long before COVID-19, and the rate of closures & vacancies does not appear to be going down.

Disconnecting From Facebook

Yesterday the shadow ban showed up again.  I know I am not the only one.

A comment on a post was simply hidden.  It said 10 comments, but only 8 shown, meaning 2 were hid.  Mine and someone else.

Facebook is very unsatisfying to post to.

My business page has 9000 followers yet at most 50-200 are actually shown my post.

Meanwhile, FB has flooded my feed with ads from Chinese companies.  One ad every 3 posts.

Chinese are allowed to advertise to us but we are banned from selling to them.

Meanwhile more false accusations of spam by the algo.  No recourse.

The algo is so bad you get a 30 day ban for saying "Chinese Imperialism"

Combined with everything else, the political manipulation, the promotion of leftist content, I will only leave the business page running as that still brings in several thousand dollars sales every month despite the algo stacked against me.  There too, I will be looking for alt venues.

Unfortunately FB is free to every mobile user even without a data plan here.  Put 2 pennies on your prepaid sim card and you got free FB as long as you never spend the 2 pennies
