New Logo – 415 Comics n More

What are your thoughts on this new logo design? Anyone out there? If so, this would be the time to make a comment…preferably constructive but I will take anything.

I’m trying out some new designs and not sure which I like the best. The one above was recently designed by a coworker of mine who happens to be an HTML artist.

This one was something I came up with screwing around on the computer. I like it but then again I have no creative talent and quite frankly I am not impartial.

Anyone out there think they can design something better? I am willing to pay for a good design. Obviously if I like it enough to buy it I want the original layered version so it can be used for all kinds of fun things. So, look things over and seriously get back and let me know what you think.

New Comic Wednesday

Well here we are…it’s Wednesday…New Comic Wednesday to be a bit more accurate and the only thing I had time to read was Justice League #6 from last week. There just isn’t enough hours in a day, or even a week, to get everything I want to do, finished. So I start out with 168 hours in a week, actually let’s say 24 hours in a day. Work seems to take up 9 to 10 hours, then I probably sleep about 6 hours a night, and then on top of that is time with the wife which accounts for about 4 to 5 hours which leaves roughly 3 hours for me. Well, actually time spent in transit has to be worked in there too so best guess estimate, I have about 2 hours of me time a day.

That may seem like a lot but if you think about it, that time is spent getting ready for work, making dinner, working out at the gym, and lastly time for whatever I want to do. Mainly that time is spent reading comics, surfing the net or reading some book, white paper or blog about email marketing. Don’t ask, it’s a sickness. My point to all this is that I really do not budget my time wisely enough because if I did, I would have more me time.

I guess what I am getting at is I buy too many comics and don’t get to read them as quickly as I would like to. Additionally, it is a damn good thing I have a box at the Comic Store because if I didn’t I would miss out on the more popular titles. My point is, today was the first time I was there in about 2 weeks and ended up buying:

Action Comics #7, Justice League #6, (Danger Girl Revolver #1 & #2 huge fan of J. Scott Campbell), The Incredible Hulk #2, #3, #5, X-Men #26, Uncanny X-Men #8, Wolverine & the X-Men Alpha & Omega #3, (Ultimate Universe Ultimates #7, X-Men #8, Spider-Man #8), Age of Apocalypse #1, Red Lanterns #7, Justice League International #7, Green Arrow #7, Detective Comics #7, (Batwing #7 only because of the cover with all the Bat characters), Batman Beyond Unlimited #1 and finally Manhattan Projects #1.

So as you can see, I have VERY little time to read in comparison to the number of comics I get. I still haven’t read 7 comics from the last time I was there. And on top of that, I have issues 3, 4, 5, 6 of I, Vampire and All Star Western that I am having trouble getting through. I know they are supposed to be these great titles that people are raving about but for some reason they do not do it for me and I have to fight through it and finish them.

Thoughts?…other than I get too many titles which I already know. I think I need to take a day off work, sit in my room and do nothing but get caught up with everything that is going on in the comic universes. And, have you seen the new DC logo…not too crazy about it yet but that is for another time. Look for a review of Justice League 4, 5, and 6 soon. So until next time…

Flashpoint #1 – Bryan

So this now becomes the first review of the Flashpoint Storyline. Story by Geoff Johns Pencils by Andy Kubert and Ink by Sandra Hope. I have to say I am immediately impressed Andy Kubert is the artist. I am such a huge fan of his stuff it makes me want to read the story that much more when I enjoy the artwork. His characters are muscular yet proportionate and realistic unlike some other artists who shall remain nameless.

Since I did not read the 12 Flash comics leading up to this, all I have to go on is what I see here. I especially like the quick recap on how Barry Allen became the Flash and then leading in to a quick history. All of the sudden the story starts and things have changed. Since I am not a regular Flash reader I am coming in to this with a blank slate of sorts. I know different stories and different timelines and writers and artists can muck things up so this is a good start for me. Barry Allen is not really the Flash in this timeline or reality, just himself.

Spoiler Alert, if you have not read any of the comics be warned

I liked the flow of the two simultaneous substories that converged towards the end. The fact that Batman is actual not Bruce but Thomas Wayne instead was a very cool twist. He is older so not as athletic but he makes up for it in grittiness and violence. He is tormented by the memory of his son and wife being murdered which lead him down the same path ironically as Bruce in the original origin. But I am getting ahead of myself.

Cyborg is the United States champion and is on the government payroll which is kind of odd. Now when batman and Cyborg meet up on the rooftop with all the side characters I was a little confused since I have no idea who most of those people are. I realize the origins and people themselves are not the same as the traditional DC universe, but I have no idea who most of them are anyway so again that helps with the realism of the storyline. The respect that Batman demands from all the characters is kind of cool as no one wanted to help the Cyborg unless Batman was in on it. Once he decided against it they were out. I really do like the character development and interaction not to mention the costumes as they are similar but different from what I know. The new logos are pretty cool too.

So as the issue comes to a close, Barry Allen makes it to Wayne Manor and get in to the Batcave. Thomas not knowing who he is almost kills him since the Flash isn’t really the Flash right now…no powers if I haven’t already stated that. The two fight and talk and fight and talk and finally we get to the end and there is a closeup of Batman’s face.

To recap, Barry Allen is not the Flash and his wakes up to this bizarre reality. Things have changed and as it turns out Aquaman and Wonder Woman are at war and have killed millions and millions of people in their war. (I guess I missed that part above). Heroes and villains are not the same and meet with Cyborg and Batman to discuss fighting back. The Batman declines the offer so everyone else folds. Cyborg is pissed and is still looking for a solution. Barry Allen makes his way, albeit confused and lost, to Wayne Manor where he finds out Bruce is dead and Thomas Wayne has become Batman.

I give the artwork a 5 out of 5. I love Kubert’s work. The story is different which is good so I give this issue a 4 out of 5. Character development is key in a story like this where reality has changed so I feel they did a good job beginning the story. The dialogue is kind of cheesy at times but it’s a comic, what do you expect? 3 out of 5 for that so I would have to say overall I give it a 4 out of 5.
