I have no idea why I picked this up other than the cover looked fun and the concept seemed fresh and new. I do not remember ever seeing anything like this before and it’s tough to come up with a new story these days.
The Colonized comes writer Chris Ryall and Artist Drew Moss by way of IDW. It’s difficult to know where to start with this so the beginning seems to be a good place.
The dialogue is not easy to read the first time through unless you go slow due to the fact there is a lot of backwoods hick jargon. The vernacular and cadence to what you read seems to be accurate or at least it could be accurate based on what I know about red necks. These militia men from the hills of Montana are separatists who, for the most part, have decided to lead a very green lifestyle with the idea of little to no carbon footprint. The town was renamed Carbon Falls and it seems they are trying to become fully sustainable and separate from the rest of the country.
The main guy dies and he was the force behind this kind of lifestyle but he had many antagonists. His son, Huxley, is set to take over as leader of the town but there are those that
oppose him. They want to go back to the old ways of doing things. So the story starts out with an unseen burial of the father with aliens hovering above. The aliens attempt to bring someone up to their ship via a tractor beam but wouldn’t you know it they attempt this over a graveyard. Somehow this beam reanimates the dead and all Hell breaks loose. A zombie is beamed up to the ship and the aliens don’t know how to react or handle it. The ship begins to drift and slide through the sky most likely due to the pilot running away from a zombie rather than flying the ship.
Crash landing nearby a majority of the town elders and/or leaders find their way to the ship and the aliens. It seems like there could be a really funny, well told story here and the artwork meshes well with the story. I’m going to give this a try and see where it goes because a new fresh plot is tough to come by these days. With that being said…I am optimistically going to give this first issue 3 Bursts. You’ll notice I have been missing the blog burst recently but I’m bringing it back. In addition I am testing out a new logo which ultimately may revise the look of the blog bursts. Cover price is $3.99 and there are 32 full color pages which is nice.
