X-Men: Battle of the Atom

I’m back on board with some X-titles after a short hiatus due to the inept and extremely lacking storylines. I hate the fact there was yet another reboot of sorts, it feels as though whatever DC does, Marvel feels they have to do better. Whatever Marvel does, DC has to one up them. It gets old and honestly it turns the fans off or in another direction. I’ve begun to love all the new Image titles and then I started reading some IDW, Zenescope and Dark Horse books because of it. However, I have to say I really do like the All New X-Men book where the past core members are brought to the future in hopes of changing the course of history. I love the storyline by Brian Michael Bendis and I wasn’t always, but am now a big fan of Stuart Immonen. I am also a fan of Uncanny X-Men by Bendis and Chris Bachalo. The dynamic between the ex Phoenix Five and everyone else is really awesome.

Scott Summers is now the poster-child for the Mutant Revolution and I think I like it. For a long time he seemed to be too much of a pussy, always trying to do the right thing but falling short because of his ideals. Well now the time has come to just accept your fate and the hand that was dealt to you. You are a bad guy whether you like it or not so own up to it and move on. However, coming out of C2E2 there comes yet another crossover entitles X-Men: Battle of the Atom. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good crossover that means something but didn’t we just come out of AvX? Isn’t there this little thing going one called the Age of Ultron? I mean come on…really? Just take a storyline and let it play out. Give it some depth, girth and go with it. I would love to see the dynamic between the different teams go on for a year before we have to throw yet another crossover in to the mix. Two years would be good. Develop some plot twists and sub stories that eventually lead up to something.

However, the theme of the crossover is quite intriguing as future X-Men know what the Hell is going to happen to present X-Men and they need to come back and try to make things right. With that being said, how far in the future are they coming from and is there going to be some character development? I need to know who people are before they just roll in and start doing things. I need for there to be a little back story with twists and turns and growth from my favorite mutants. Going back many years to before and after the X-tinction Agenda there was a lot of history. It wasn’t just something that happened overnight after a new book was introduced. Maybe I am wrong and things have always been like this. Maybe I just think the writing of old and the characters of old are better because I am getting old. Maybe the artwork is better now and I am wrong to think that Lee, Portacio, Liefeld*, Silvestri and Adam and Andy Kubert were just ok along with writers Chris Claremont, Scott Lobdell and Fabian Nicieza. Not that the current writing isn’t good, it’s just I want depth and drawn out plot. I want 12 pages of lead in to the punch at the end.

Either way, it is what it is and I cannot change it. All I can do is blog about it and hope that people read it and agree with me, or disagree, doesn’t matter. I the muckety mucks at Marvel decide that I am right well then anyone else who feels the way I do can be pleased if things change. If not, then those that love it the way it is now can be happy to keep buying half thought out plots and storylines. Maybe I am just having a bad day and this is how I get to vent. Maybe I am right. Who knows. Just read this and let me know if you agree or disagree.

The Superior Spider-Man

Let me first preface this by saying I believe Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel title, quite possibly my favorite title overall. I never gave it much thought before as to who my favorite character was or team or book or anything. I just didn’t think about. Then one day I was asked and it made me stop and think for quite some time. Sitting downstairs in the comic room in front of all my boxes of comics it dawned on me. Whenever I went to a Comic Con and talked with an artist and they asked who I wanted a sketch of I couldn’t think of anyone other than Spider-Man which I attributed to being caught on the spot. Time goes on and after multiple cons I now have Spidey sketches or signed pictures from multiple artists which leads me to believe he is the one.

After learning this I began collecting certain Spider-Man covers from a few artists. For the majority of my life I was an X title guy, collecting pretty much every X title out there. Check a previous blog post somewhere in the archive and I discuss that in more detail. I have almost every Uncanny X-Men book starting from 152 so you have to think they are my favorite and might have been for a while. However as time passed and the artists changed and writers moved around I lost interest. Along comes the Spider Island saga and I am reading a new book. Couple that with some kick ass covers I purchased by J. Scott Campbell ( @JScottCampbell ) and now I have a new title that I am trying to put together. Don’t get me wrong, I purchased some Amazing Spider-Man in the past, most notably the Carnage issues and early venom, 350, 365, 375 and some others (Oh yes, I have signed covers for 601, 606 and 607 and my most recent purchase was a signed 500). So in addition to Campbell, I am a big fan of Humberto Ramos ( @Humberto_ramos )and Ryan Stegman ( @RyanStegman ). Those three along with Andy Kubert, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri and let’s not forget Todd Mcfarlane ( @Todd_McFarlane ) are the only artists I would really like to see doing any Spidey book. If I had to put them in any kind of order I would have problems but for the sake of an argument and factoring in reality I would say Mcfarlane, Campbell, Ramos and Stegman. With that being said I am really happy two of those four are revolving artists on the current Superior Spider-Man title.

Step back to the Ends of the Earth storyline and you have me getting nervous. I haven’t been reading the title regularly for that long and you get the feeling something is going to happen. Here it comes, Peter Parker dies…seriously, they kill off Peter. Obviously I understand comic characters don’t really die, they just phase in and out every so often but this seems to be a big deal. Not to mention Doc Ock is now residing in Peter’s body? I mean come on, what the Hell kind of storyline is this anyway. How far out in left field does Slott have to be to make this happen? With me reeling from the loss of a new character I am very fond of I feel the need to read Superior 1 to have some kind of closure and in the back of my mind I think there is no way I can like this title. Well, I was wrong. Yes, I was very much wrong and I can admit it. There is still some trepidation after issue 2 but I am feeling hopeful.

Move on to issue 3 and I now think it could be my favorite title. Some say Slott writes the book for kids more than adults and I can see that but honestly there is some depth to what is happening and there is so much that can be done with the storyline. I like an edgier Spider-Man with more of an attitude that quite frankly comes from a place where the character just feels superior to Peter. Now he has all the memories of Peter along with his memories which make him very conflicted at times how to react to certain situations. Occasionally he does what Peter would do and other times he does was Ock would do. He is keeping everyone guessing, even himself. The inner dialogue with phantom subconscious Peter and himself is entertaining and I really like it. It’s the inner turmoil that many people have with them self when it comes to right and wrong. Aside from cover 1, I absolutely love cover 3. It just feels right.

However, along comes cover 4 and we have a new artist on board for two issues. Nothing against Giuseppe Camuncoli but I just can’t get in to it like I can the others. He is not very different but enough to make me notice it isn’t Stegman. Luckily though Ramos comes in to the picture for issue 6 and I am feeling more at ease. I am behind right now so I can see covers 7 and 8 are Ramos but I have not read them yet so I am really looking forward to the interaction with the Avengers in the next book. I’ve seen the cover and I like it, not only does he pencil the cover but the interior which makes me very happy. It’s funny how you can look at a cover and get excited for something only to find out there is another artist doing the interior. It makes me feel like, and this is a stolen quote so if you read this and I heard it from you here is your shout out, it feels like false advertising. Like the promise of a new day only to have it suddenly get overcast and rain. it’s just not right. But then on the flip side you get those shitty covers with awesome interior art and it kind of makes up for things.

To all you haters out there, give it a chance. Read the book for what it is and don’t feel cheated that Peter is gone because he probably isn’t really gone. Hopefully the two consciousnesses will become one and the new character will be new. I like how things are and I really hope both Slott ( @DanSlott ) and either Stegman or Ramos take their time, drag this out for a while and dive in to a good long term storyline with twists, turns and surprises. I don’t need to keep reading 3 issue story arcs with a new artist and writer every other issue. Grow some balls, stand your ground and create some stability and continuity for this new character/story. There really is a lot of potential to take it to different places and honestly you can put the character in to some old situations because it allows for some reflection by both the writer and the reader. We get to see how Doc Ock with a splash of Peter handles things. Old plots can be reused in a different way with different characters and a new path.

All in all, I really have to give this new book 4 out of 5 and the way to get it up to 4.5 or even 4.75 is to keep up with the writing and don’t swap out artists too often. Don’t think because this book is doing well and FF is doing really bad that you need to take a good artist and/or writer and move them over so that new title, again using FF because I think it sucks, to revive it while this great title suffers. Just let shitty titles die because a good artist can only do so much with a title that was flawed to begin with, unlike a great title that sags because an artist or write leaves. Rating System

So now finally I have the criteria and the image to represent my rating system. You would think this would be easy, but it did not come easy. For some reason, I’ve been having trouble concentrating and focusing on specific tasks which means I need to get down to it and dig in. This blog is important to me so digging in and focusing on what matters has to come to the forefront.

So, without any further delay, the rating scale criteria points:
1. Cover Art – this consists of my thoughts regarding the pencils and the inks.
2. Interior Art – this consists of my thoughts regarding the interior pencils and inks.
3. Characters/Dialogue – this consists of my thoughts regarding the characters, their development and interaction with each other.
4. Story/Plot – this consists of my thoughts regarding the story itself, which is the plot, direction and the dialogue between the characters in the story.

Finally…what you’ve all been waiting for, (or at least what I’ve been waiting for) the graphic representing the grading or rating criteria.
It’s THE BURST. And not just any burst, it’s the 415 burst.

The Other Guys

The wife and I are sitting here reading; her a girly book and me Chapter 3 of Messiah Complex (X Factor #25 vol. 2) . The television is on but muted and neither of us are paying attention to what is on…and I look up. It’s the last minute of the Other Guys staring Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg. If you’ve never seen it you are not really missing anything so don’t go out of your way to rent or find it. However, if you do see it you should watch the little vignette at the end as it details all kinds of information about Ponzi schemes, golden parachutes, the TARP (Troubled Assets Relief Program) bailout.

Philadelphia Comic Con

Philly Comic Con is coming up and the wife and I will be in attendance again this year after a year away. We’ll be there Saturday the 2nd along with Jon, Nick and Rob. (innocuous plug) Last year we went to the Baltimore Comic Con which is not part of the Wizard World tour but it was great all the same. We stayed overnight in a cool old hotel right down the street from where the Con was held. By the way allow me to state the Baltimore Con is brought to you by Cards Comics & Collectibles in Reisterstown, MD which is a very cool store.

Stan Lee was there, not sure if it was the first time or not, and it looks like he’ll be at Philly again this year as well. I did not get in line for his autograph but plenty of fans did which was really cool to see. His image below is linked to the page where you can get tickets for the VIP experience.

The next post will be about the Carnage USA series that just ended which was surprisingly good. I always thought Venom and Carnage were novelty characters that were cool, but not really written well. This series had good writing and artwork.

Jim Lee Thoughts

It’s no secret Jim Lee is by far my favorite artist. From his attention to detail with the smallest section of their face to the way each character is very proportionate in musculature compared to everyone else. He is the main reason for my resurgence in comic collection. Had I not seen his cover for Justice League #1 there is a huge chance I would not have this blog. I won’t get all mushy on you and tell you he changed my life and gave me purpose, because he really didn’t, but for sure I try to pick up every title associated with him. And, because of him I have a new found respect for DC comics.

Back in the day I first noticed this cool new artist in the Acts of Vengeance storyline and then again more so in the Xtinction Agenda storyline. I was semi hooked on the X- titles back in the mid to late 80’s but when they released X-Men volume 2 in 1991 I was locked in. I bought every issue from then on of the 2nd series. Even after he left Marvel and started Image with the other guys, I followed his books. Wildcats was just awesome and Gen13 as well as Stormwatch vol 1 kept me buying more of the Image titles. Anyway, today I was searching and found his FB page…I cannot believe I was not already a fan of his Facebook page. If you’ve never seen it check it out.

From there I was directed to the DC website (don’t get me started on their new logo) where I saw the cover for DC’s Free Comic Book Day New 52 edition.It shows Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Pandora who I believe will be a new character that I just saw introduced at the end of Justice League #6. Her face reminds me of Rachel Summers when she was a hound for Ahab and then later with Excalibur. It looks like he has done it again, just like he did in the late 80’s. I am back to being a comic book geek and not just for his titles. As you can tell from my previous post I am sampling quite a few titles from DC, Marvel and independents.

I am looking forward to some of the new titles coming out in May like Worlds Finest and Earth 2. For some reason I am always in to the reboot or alternate timelines.
