Alibaba Cloud's first Inter-School Generative AI Competition in 2024 attracted 86 schools, 494 teams and 1,430 students to participate, making it the largest competition of its kind in Hong Kong's history. This year, the competition is expanding its reach with the addition of a Macau division. This expansion aims to inspire more students to utilize Alibaba Cloud's advanced generative AI tools – including the large language model Qwen and the multimedia generation system Wan – to explore greater possibilities at the intersection of technology and urban development.
The Hong Kong chapter features divisions for primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, and schools for students with special educational needs (SEN). Alibaba Cloud is also hosting offline “Tongyi” competition workshops before submissions open, guiding participating students on using the AI tools. Students are required to create comics, short videos, or mini-program designs centered around the theme of “Chinese Culture”, using Alibaba Cloud's AI tools. The competition aims to enhance students' creativity and problem-solving skills while fostering innovation in technology within the academic community.
At the opening ceremony, Alibaba Cloud and EdCity entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining deep cooperation across multiple areas. These include jointly promoting the integration of AI technology into teaching practices, providing cloud resources and creative tools for students, designing specialized cloud technology and AI training programs for educators to enhance digital teaching capabilities, and optimizing the security and stability of school infrastructure through cloud solutions.
Alibaba Cloud and EdCity signed an MOU to provide more AI and cloud technology support for Hong Kong's education sector, further driving digital transformation.
Dr Tenny Lam, Executive Director, Hong Kong Education City, said, “This landmark partnership between EdCity and Alibaba Cloud heralds a new chapter in Hong Kong's educational transformation, while strengthening smart education integration between Mainland China and Hong Kong. By harnessing pioneering technologies—from artificial intelligence to cloud computing—this partnership promises to redefine the future of educational innovation. Positioned as a ‘super-connector’, EdCity will capitalise on its unique role to co-create an open, forward-looking smart education platform with Alibaba Cloud, further enriching the ‘AI in Education’ ecosystem. Together, we aspire to nurture a new generation of digitally empowered, globally competitive learners, contributing meaningfully to the nation’s digital education ambitions.”
Professor Herbert Chia, JP, Member of the Digital Economy Development Committee and the Education Commission, commented: “Last year's competition showcased the passion and potential of Hong Kong's younger generation for generative AI technology. AI is reshaping industries, and AI talent will be the core force driving regional innovation and development. We look forward to this competition serving as a starting point for students to explore the world of AI, igniting their technological dreams and passion for innovation.”
Thomas Ho, Vice President of North APAC & SEA Region, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said: “As a leader in AI innovation, Alibaba Cloud is committed to bringing AI technology to schools, sparking the interest of the younger generation in technology, and discovering and nurturing more future tech talent. This year's competition features carefully designed divisions tailored to different age groups' learning characteristics – from dynamic image creation in the SEN division to mini-program development in the Senior Secondary division – ensuring every student can unleash their creativity through appropriate challenges. The competition’s expansion to Macau this year allows us to witness the boundless creativity of students from both regions."
The competition is open for submissions from September 30 to October 31, 2025. Results will be announced in November, with the awards ceremony scheduled for January next year. Participation is free of charge. Winning teams (students and supervising teachers) will have the opportunity to visit Alibaba Group's headquarters in Hangzhou. Additionally, all eligible participants will receive a certificate of participation from Alibaba Cloud.
