I’ve been trying to get into the habit of drawing but as usual, achieving most or any goals that I have continue to evade me. HOWEVER, if I think back to the fact that I’ve gone from never drawing at all to completing a few small sketches here and there, it’s a vast improvement. Well, anything would seem significantly better when you start at zero but this is just me trying to look at the brighter side of things 😀

This was from a month ago, when I started getting a little more serious. Oftentimes, I get really anxious when I sit down to draw because I feel incapable so to circumvent that, I’ll look at tutorials and follow that just to get myself to just sit, draw and complete something no matter how simple. The goal wasn’t to be precise but rather to just draw and complete it which is what I did with a few tutorials from dragoart.com

I’m not one to like going to tutorials but sometimes it just helps to get the ball rolling and give you an idea of the way some artists go about drawing.

I may just have to go back to that as an exercise since I haven’t been doing too much lately. I wonder how artists get to a point where they do nothing but draw during all their spare time.

An Old Sketch

This is from the first time I attempted to copy a character from a manga. I was pretty happy with it though it was a long time before I drew a manga character again. This one is the main character of “Mairunovich.”

(By the way, I need more creative titles for these sketch posts -_-)

Kurebayashi Teru from “Dengeki Daisy”

This is a sketch of a Kurebayashi Teru, the main character from one of my favorite manga, “Dengeki Daisy.” Definitely recommend reading it!

For those who don’t know, manga are Japanese graphic novels or short stories. As I mentioned before, I wasn’t a fan of manga for a very long time but they’ve really grown on me. As with anything, the good and bad are mixed among them and it can be difficult to find the best ones but it’s worthwhile when you do. I think what drew me in was the art of manga and the emotions that can be conveyed through it. Amazing how much significance facial expressions and subtle movements have. Manga conveys the importance of that very well.

I love the art of this particular mangaka (a creator of manga), Motomi Kyousuke. She has a unique lineup of expressions that have a strong comedic effect. Emotional expressions are extremely important in manga in order to portray a characters internal state at any given point, otherwise it’s not really much of a story unless the manga is heavy on its narrative. One of the difficult things about manga is that while the art can be great, the dialogue and story tend to be cliche and commonplace. Particularly with Shoujo manga, (manga directed primarily towards female readers) most of them follow the same story line or pattern. However, that’s not always the case. This is an amazing story and I love the development of the characters and the difficulties they go through. Even if you’re not crazy about Shoujo manga or manga in general, I would suggest giving it a chance.

Cross Hatching Eyes

With the second sketchbook and the break from drawing after the semester ended, I’m a lot shakier with my pen sketches. I’m still trying to just go with the flow. As you can see, the finger nails on the hands are totally off from each other but you know, it’s okay. I’m learning to accept that it’s impossible to keep drawing if I get stuck on all the mistakes. I do love cross hatching though. The mistakes while doing that just add to the drawing rather than take away from it.
