The Worst Valentines Day Ever!

This Valentines was not the worst because of anything that Dave did wrong. We had to sell our cute puppy crush and this happened to occur on Valentines Day. We just did not have enough time to give to him and we have to move soon so we did not know what we were going to do. This was one of the worst things I have ever had to do. It was horrible! I have never seen a cuter puppy (look at our new puppy page to see how cute he was) and he was turning in to the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. Life is definately much easier without a dog but we miss him very much! These pictures obviously weren't taken on Valentines because I definately did not have a smile on my face.

Badger Family Cruise- Ensenada

My grandparents took the whole extended family on a cruise over the Christmas break. There were almost 100 of us! We stopped in Ensenada. Dave, Alex, Jake and I rented a golf cart and Katie and Geoff rented a scooter. We drove around the city and took a whole bunch of pictures and even stopped to have lunch at a small authentic mexican restaurant. Everything was going great until we got a flat tire! They had to come and give us a new cart. It was great fun being on a cruise with the whole fam. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa!

Christmas 2007

Christmas was great as usual. We went over to the Badger Family Christmas Party for Christmas Eve and did all of our traditional things. Christmas morning Dave and I spent together opening our presents to each other (Dave got an ipod. If you can't tell he was a little excited!) and then we went over to Dave's parents and had breakfast and then later in the afternoon came over to my parents for lunch and played games. Christmas night Dave got called in to work which really sucked but over all we had a great day!

Daycare

These are some of my daycare kids. For the most part I love it but some days it can be very hard. I am very lucky to have such cute kids!

Torn ACL and Meniscus

In august I went to play in one of my indoor soccer games. I hurt my knee to the point that I could barely walk on it. I went to the doctor the next day and he said that I most likely tore my MCL so he gave me this big annoying brace to wear for six weeks. It was not fun! After six weeks I went back to the doctor assuming that my knee was repaired and I could get back to doing the things I used to. To my surprise he said it still feels to loose I think you tore your ACL. I was so mad because that is what I thought was wrong in the first place and he was almost positive it wasn't so I just wore this stupid brace for this long for nothing! I had an MRI and sure enough my ACL was completely torn along with my meniscus and cartlage damage. I had surgery at the end of September. I started physical therapy and got my range of motion back quickly but the recovery has been hard and slow. The worst part about it was that Dave and I had a trip to Nepal all planned and payed for. The trip required many many miles of hiking and of course with my injury I was not capable of that so we had to cancel it. When this was all going on I felt like this was the worst thing ever. The timing was absolutely horrible and Dave was going through one of the hardest times of his life. I am so thankful for him and even though he was struggling was still able to be there for me. Now looking back on it I have learned that God is aware of us and he blesses us greatly after going through trials. Things are turning out even better than they would have before this happened. I wouldn't go as far as to say that I am glad this happened to my knee along with all the other things that were happening at the time but we are stronger for it and everything is working out so smoothly for us now. I am still working hard to regain my muscle and hope to be 100% in about 3 months. These pictures are from inside my knee when they were repairing it.

Backpacking- Francis Lake

Redfish Lake

We go to Redfish Lake every summer. It is a beautiful place and we have tons of fun. We usually spend a day at Redfish Lake and then go on hikes and ride four wheelers and motorcycles. This time we brought a big sheet and a projector and watched movies at night in camp. I posted a few pictures from previous years. I can't wait to go again!

Yellowstone

A Fourth of July or A Halloween Story?
as told to Wanda Badger

Early on the morning of Wednesday, the Fourth of July, Rob, His wife Annette, their six children, and a son in law, set off for a four day vacation in a remote area outside of Yellowstone Park. Camping, hiking, and just spending time in the wilderness being their favorite activity, it didn’t alarm them to find that the cabins they had rented for the first two days and nights were in a very secluded, heavily wooded, non-inhabited, far distant place up 10 miles of a dirt road.

Annette had found this place online and was excited because part of the deal included breakfast and dinner being cooked and served to them by the cabin owners, a man and his wife.

They also weren’t alarmed when the owners told them a couple from Germany had rented a cabin, but when they arrived earlier that day they thought it was too lonely there so they left. Annette thought this was another plus, because she and Rob could then have use of the deluxe cabin which had previously been rented to the German couple.

At dinner on Wednesday there appeared a teenage boy that the owners said was a grandson of a friend of theirs, who had been dropped off by their friend. The proprietor put him alone at a table in the corner, and then the owner himself crowded in at Rob’s table instead of eating with the boy, which everyone thought was strange.

The next morning at breakfast Rob asked where the young man was and he was told that he had walked down into Yellowstone Park to wander around for several days. He would be back by Tuesday.

Thursday night Robbie, Zeke, and Katie had been out wandering around with a flashlight after dark and returned with an unusual tale, which the family didn’t take serious right at the time. They said they found this kind of oval ball about the size of a head, wrapped heavily in duct tape, and they pulled off the end of it and something popped out like part of a spinal cord. They stuck a stick into the cavity and thick gooey red stuff came out.

Early Friday morning Rob and his family had breakfast, and then planned to leave. They told the owners what Robbie and the others had found, and where, and suggested the owners check it out.

As the family traveled out of there they kept remembering unusual things the owners had done and said- talking a lot about all the murders and rapes in Yellowstone- talking about orphan boys they invited up there- and about people who come there to practice a weird religion, and they remembered that the woman was always evasive when they asked her questions. Also, no one had signed the guest book for over a year. These were things the family joked about, but now they were becoming apprehensive about what was going on there.
When they returned home Saturday evening they phoned the couple and asked if they had checked out the “head.” The people said they just now had gotten around to it, but hadn’t taken the duct tape off. Rob asked them point blank if it looked like a spinal cord attached to possibly a head, and they said yes. After hanging up Rob tried to phone them back several times and they wouldn’t answer the phone. He left a message for them to please call him, and hadn’t heard from them by Sunday.

Rob thought “if someone told you there was possibly a head wrapped in duct tape on your property, would you wait 2 days to check it out?” In my mind I wondered why Rob hadn’t checked it out himself before he left, but if Rob had retrieved the item Thursday night and confronted the couple with it would something terrible have happened to his family? No one was within miles to hear or see anything. When I mentioned this to Rob, he said “his not investigating it was so totally out of character” for him, that he felt he must have somehow been kept from doing it. Scary, huh!

Rob had his son who had found the head make a replica of the size and shape it was, and also of the spinal cord, and both fit what could be part of a human body. Possible the person’s head had been taped up and then cut off, then buried in a different place than the body parts. A wild animal probably dug the head up.

Sunday Rob went to the police in Salt Lake. They were intrigued with his story and told him to call the police in Gardiner City, Montana- the nearest town to this area.

This he did. The policeman said he was a good friend of this couple and said they were upstanding people. (Rob figured that might be the case and that’s why he didn’t contact them before.) They told the police officer that it was just trash, and it was heavy and took two people to carry. Robbie said he didn’t pick it up, but rolled it over and it wasn’t heavy. And who would wrap trash heavily in duct tape? Also they had admitted to Rob that it looked like a head and a spinal cord.

What happened to the boy who was there one day and gone the next? Could the German’s have met with foul play? Again, if Rob had retrieved the item Thursday night and confronted the couple with it would they have done away with the whole family? They may never know the answers to these questions!

Fat Man's Misery

This is the ideal slot canyon adventure and one of the most beautiful places in the Zion National Park area. The hike in is decorated with charming water filled pot holes which summer months bring canyon tree frogs to the pools displaying all stages of development. The slot canyon lures the canyoneers to its bowels. Fat Man's Misery twists, turns and winds, offering rock slides, a couple of interesting rappels and enough difficulty to keep even hard core canyoneers interested. The narrow slot canyon has it all: trees wedged between the falls, bouldering, slides, warm pools, cold pools, sandy bottoms, towering canyon walls and a couple of fun rappels. The East Fork of the Virgin River (Parunuweap Canyon) is as impressive as the popular Zion Narrows but set in a more remote and wild environment. There are few adventures that can compare with a trip through Parunuweap, one of the Southwest's most outstanding canyons. However, this canyon is not the place for those without rappelling, down climbing, rope and route finding skills. This route is through a wilderness area offering little hope of running into other humans.

Distance: 4.75 miles from Checkerboard approach to the river. .25 miles to the Powell Plaque. Then 4.3 miles to exit.
Average Hiking Time: 12 hours
Equipment: 100' rope, webbing, harness, rappel device, map, dry bag, helmet and lots of water.
Technical: At least 4 short rappels or downclimbs. One optional rappel is 50'. The required rappel is 35' and overhanging'. Two shorter rappels can be downclimbed with a hand-line.
Difficulty: Strenuous hiking, river hiking. Technical if going through Fat Man's Misery Slot Canyon. Downclimbing skills are needed.

Subway

The Subway (Left Fork of North Creek) is a semi-technical canyoneering adventure. This route should only be attempted when lead by an experienced hiker or canyoneer. The route will require 7 to 9 hours to complete. The payoff for your time and effort is visiting some of the most spectacular scenery in Zion, without the usual busload of tourists. A car shuttle is required for this adventure.

You will need a 60-foot rope for hand lines, belays, lowering packs and possible emergency use. Many guidebooks list a 50-foot rope, which is too short to establish a handline at the final obstacle. Use a drybag for anything you don't want wet. The Subway contains several cold swims and miles of wading. Wetsuits are suggested for cold weather conditions. There are several downclimbing problems where inexperienced canyoneers might require a handline, belay or partner assist.

Coyote Gulch

Coyote Gulch is gorgeous! The colors are amazing and it is a very enjoyable hike. We have gone here for the past couple of summers. The only downfall is that sometimes it is crowded but other than that it is great!

Our new puppy!

Dave and I decided to get a Vizsla puppy. We got first pick out of four puppys and picked him up the first possible day we could. He would sleep a ton when he was little but as he got older he had tons of energy! He was a great running partner and had tons of personality. I have never really been a huge fan of dogs and am very picky about what kinds I like but look at him he is adorable. Who could resist? We also have two very cute bunnies!

St. George

Dave and I love to go to our family condo in St. George. Usually we plan a fun hike or adventure in Zions. This time we relaxed and I took Dave on some small hikes that we used to do with our family when we were kids. We went to Fort Pearce, the Dinosaur Tracks, and to some Petrolglyphs. Sometimes its fun to go back and do the little things.

Bear Hunting

This year we went up with my Dad, Mom, and Zeke to see if we could see any bears. It is really cool to sit in a tree stand and be able to see and watch bears come in. We went up after the actual hunting season was over. When I say hunting I mean that I hunt with my camera! haha I leave the rest for my Dad and brothers. Dave, Zeke, and I did not see any bears in our location on this particular trip but my parents saw a couple good sized bears. It was still really fun.

Backpacking- Book Cliffs

This backpack was awesome! I love the Book Cliffs! We went through some really unique obstacles and to some really neat places! It rained on us one of the nights and seeing as how my dad has not bought new tents in quite some time they leaked! Before we hiked out they burned their tents so they would not have to carry them out and to force my dad to get new tents!

Parashant Wash to the Grand Canyon

This was one of the coolest trips ever! We went on an 80 mile four wheeling trip to the Grand Canyon. We got to the Grand Canyon at sunset and it was awesome! We had four wheelers, motorcycles, and our Argo(8 wheeled ATV). This was just one of the many memorable trips and places that my dad has taken us! Thanks Dad! Your the best!

Orderville Gulch

The canyon has as much charm as its big brother, the Zion Narrows, with probably a little more spice. The canyon is certainly narrower than the famous Narrows.

Orderville Gulch offers dramatic scenery, majestic narrows, wading, short swims and a few scrambling problems to keep you on your toes.

Orderville Gulch is a semi-technical canyoneering adventure. Every group should have at least one experienced hiker or rock climber along to help defeat a few minor obstacles. This route will require 7 to 8 hours to complete. A car shuttle is required for this adventure. You will need a 50-foot rope for hand lines, belays, lowering packs and possible emergency use. A drybag for your gear is also suggested.

Orderville Gulch requires several miles of wading combined with a couple of possible short swims. The swimming is never further than 10 to 15 feet. The water is cold and a hot day is suggested. Everyone will want to carry a warm, dry fleece to put on if they become chilled or at the canyon end so toss one into your drybag.

North Guardian Angel

Average Hiking Time: 7 hours
Trail Usage: Low
Difficulty: Steep, unprotected with exposure, 5th class sandstone scrambling. Rope and climbing skills are required.

5th Class Scrambling
Climbers rate this as 5th class scrambling. Going past this point requires climbing skills and ropes. The drop off here is long and exposed. Look for the stunted growth ponderosa tree (above about 70') on the mountain side. Find the path of least resistance. Common routes are to either follow the crack system up to the tree or to go to the right of the ponderosa pine tree and make a loop up and back to that tree. The ponderosa can be used as an anchor to get the rest of the group up. Work toward the southern face as going up and to the west. Follow the weaknesses up the mountain side. There are 5 pitches of rope climbing on the exposed south face of the North Guardian Angel. Top out on the narrow ridge, hiking west to the summit.

Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, Arches

Dave and I hit three National Parks in one weekend. It was awesome! We went to Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and Arches. It was our first time for all of them. They were all different and we enjoyed them all.

Autumn

Ski Patrol

Dave is on the ski patrol at Powder Mountain. He loves it! Before we got married I had only been downhill skiing once but of course since I can go for free I am skiing a lot more and learning quickly. It is very fun!

Backpacking- Swift Creek

Another great backpacking trip! My dad always knows the best spots! The fish weren't as good as Phinney Lake but we still caught quite a few!

Camping with Mike and Emily

We went camping with Dave's brother Mike and his wife emily and their two kids. It was fun to be able to get out and do something with them befor Mike left for Grad school.

Maurice's Baptism

One of Dave's good friends from High School got baptised. Dave and their group of friends flew out to Nebraska to support him and to be part of that.

Backpacking- Phinney Lake

This backpacking trip was so much fun. We had to stop and camp one night before we reached the lake because it got dark. When we finally reached the lake the first thing Robbie said was "there are no fish in this lake". He caught one on his first cast and thats how the fishing went the rest of the time. It was beautiful and I love it when there are no other people!

Our Wedding- May 10,2005
