In tonight’s ABC 20/20 Bob Woodruff interview with Andrew and Cheri Young, the Young’s will try to rehabilitate themselves as repentant loyalists of John Edwards who’ve seen the light and want to mend their ways. We claim otherwise based on the Young’s haven’t fully divulged how much profit they gleaned from their role in the affair and lovechild cover-up. The Young’s have been alleged trying to sell the infamous John Edwards-Rielle Hunter sex tape and photos downloaded from Hunter’s digital camera. Despite a court order issued yesterday by a North Carolina judge, the Young’s have refused to return the sex tape and photos and any copies they may have made to Rielle Hunter.

The John Edwards’ sordid public scandal saga, at least in regards to Andrew Young, began December 19, 2007, when Jerome Armstrong at MyDD.com published a statement from Young titled, Is This Really Happening?.
According to Armstrong-posted in the comments-he’d received the statement from Young’s attorney.
On October 11, Armstrong posted a statement from Rielle Hunter which Armstrong titled, “National Enquirer, Wonkette, bullshit bucket”.
The ABC 20/20 Bob Woodruff interview with Andrew and Cheri Young is set to roll out tonight while teaser promos have appeared all week on shows such as Inside Edition. Also in the news, various accounts of Young’s book. In the promo’s, Andrew and Cheri appear as victims, victimized by their loyalty to John Edwards. The Young’s loyalty for John Edwards came at a well-paid price: a purported real-estate deal, a renovation to the Young’s new home, as well as the Young’s payola for “babysitting” a pregnant and post-baby Hunter for a period of nine months. There’s also the Young’s “double-dipping”: Young’s John Edwards’ affair and lovechild tell-all, The Politician, as well as a scheme to sell a Rielle Hunter photos and a Rielle Hunter-John Edwards sex tape. A tape the Young’s claim Hunter left in the trash.

In August of 2008, Ted Frank at Overlawyered.com posted info on Young’s pre-Rielle Hunter salary as Edwards’ aide and details on Fred Baron’s involvement.
Ted Frank:
“Andrew Young, who publicly claims to be the father of Rielle Hunter’s baby (though he hasn’t been heard from since John Edwards’s confession of an affair), was moved to Santa Barbara by the generosity of John Edwards’s campaign chairman, trial lawyer Fred Baron. He was paid $3,500/month to work for the Edwards campaign.”
Both Andrew and Cheri moved to Santa Barbara with a very pregnant Hunter. According to Cheri, their decision to “flee” at a virtual moment’s notice was due to their belief that Edwards’ chance to become President “now laid in our hands”.
“We couldn’t tell our families where we were going,” Young said. “We said …’You’re going to see our names in the newspapers. We love you. Everything is fine. Trust us. But we can’t tell you where we are.’”
Cheri Young said she was shocked and displeased, but said she felt as if the couple was taking a hit for the greater cause.
“Ultimately, we felt like … his chance to be president of the United States laid in our hands because he could continue if we said yes. And we did,” she said.
According to ABC News, the Young’s “monthly allowance” ranged from “$5,000 to 11,000″ for a period of nine months, a total of $72,000. According to the National Enquirer, the Young’s were paid an estimated $20,000 per month while Rielle Hunter received a lower sum, $15,000.
The Young’s claimed Fred Baron sent them FED-EX packages of cash wrapped in Fred Baron stationary. Baron whisked them around in private jets, rented two homes for Hunter and Young for $190,000, flights on Baron’s private jets, estimated at a cost of $180,000, as well as renovations to the Young’s Raleigh home, totaling $325,000. According to the Young’s, Baron’s contributions to the Rielle Hunter cover-up totaled close to a $1 million with another $700,000 from benefactor Bunny Mellon in chocolate boxes that contained checks. A grand total of $1,544,000 for nine months of hiding Rielle Hunter. A large portion in untraceable cash. Cash which Andrew Young states he had access to.
According to Ted Frank the Young’s were involved in a real estate transaction which involved North Carolina real-estate developer Timothy Toben–a long-time North Carolina Democratic fundraiser. The transaction occurred three weeks after the first accusations of John Edwards’ affair involving Rielle Hunter appeared in Huffington Post.
Ted Frank:
A 2001-2007 run-up in price in the Raleigh home is not dramatically unusual; Young’s timing in getting out at the top of the housing bubble in February 2007 was impeccable, and Ms. Grissom appears to have overpaid relative to what some similar houses in the area sold for, but a lot of people were overpaying for houses in early 2007. (That said, I’d like to know why Zillow is so suspicious about the purchase price.)
That’s not to say there’s nothing interesting about the Toben transaction: note that Young purchased the Conservation Ridge property in Orange County with a $272,700 mortgage in 2005 and paid off the mortgage in full on October 17, 2007–just three weeks after insinuations about Rielle Hunter were in the Huffington Post (and Overlawyered), and one week after the October 10 National Enquirer story first alleged an affair. Of course, that could be a coincidence. What led Young to choose that week to pay off a mortgage?
According to ABC News, Young claimed in his book that he’d “set aside thousands of dollars” of Bunny Mellon’s money. How much money? Young didn’t say. When Woodruff inquired about the money, Young claimed he’d spent it on the Young’s new home. A home that was under construction, three miles from the Edward’s 29,000 sq. ft. mansion in Chapel Hill, while the Young’s were ensconced in Santa Barbara with Hunter:
The Young’s 5,300 square foot home — just three miles from the Edwards’ mansion and valued by the tax assessor at $893,000 — was built, in part, with a $325,000 gift from Baron, who wired the money directly to the builder, according to Young. The Youngs claim they were encouraged by Baron to build the house with no expense spared, and then sell it and move to another city.
“We’ve completely lost our reputation. We have a house that we can’t finish that’s threatening to bankrupt us,” he said. “We were seduced by the power and the lights and the money … we were. And there’s no excuse for that. There’s no excuse for a lot of our behavior.”
While the Young’s claim they’ve changed their loyalty for profit lying ways, evidence seems to point in another direction. Evidence which involves the infamous Rielle Hunter-John Edwards sex tape. A tape which the Young’s claimed they’d found in Hunter’s trash, which, according to Radar, the Young’s were trying to sell.
On January 29, the Radar reported that Hunter had won a court order for the return of the sex tape from the Young’s.
According to the court documents filed by Hunter and posted at the Smoking Gun, Hunter claims she had stored the tape in a hat box which contained her passport and other personal items in a home rented by Andrew Young in Chapel Hill. A few blocks away, the Young family ensconced in a rented home, both homes funded by Fred Baron. According to Hunter, both Cheri and Andrew Young had a key and a passcode access to Hunter’s rental home.
One side note: Hunter stated in the court documents that, while in Santa Barbara, she stayed with the Young’s and their children. A detail that the Young’s deny, claiming they’d shipped their kids off to stay with grandparents before heading to California. Hunter also claimed both the Young’s had access to her laptop and digital camera while in Santa Barbara.
Hunter claimed that while she was in Santa Barbara in 2008 she needed her passport, which Andrew Young retrieved from the hatbox stored in Hunter’s rental home in North Carolina. The same hat box which contained the purported sex tape. Hunter stated she never authorized either of the Young’s to take possession of the tape. Hunter stated Young’s description of the contents of the tape didn’t match her recollection. Hunter stated Young had claimed in news reports from his book that the tape was “mangled”, that Young had “repaired” the tape, then watched it with his wife. (Young claimed the tape contained images of John Edwards and a pregnant woman having sex and that the woman’s face never came into view. Young claimed the woman is Hunter based on the jewelry the woman wore) Hunter stated the “mangled” description of the tape applied as she had “cracked the cassette open” and pulled the video tape out of the cassette.
Hunter charged that Young and/or Cheri downloaded photos which included Francis Quinn from Hunter’s digital camera. Hunter stated that she had heard through sources Young had used the photos in connection with Young’s book proposal. Hunter stated that she had, through counsel, asked Young to return the tape and photos and that Andrew Young had refused. On January 28, a judge at the North Carolina Chapel Hill Superior Court granted Hunter’s temporary restraining order then required the Young’s to turn over the tape and photos.
According to Radar, when authorities went to the Young’s North Carolina home to retrieve the tape and photos, they came away empty-handed.
Who’s telling the truth and who’s still lying?
Tonight on ABC’s 20/20, Andrew and Cheri will claim they’ve learned their lesson and want to repent. Meanwhile, they’ve kept the tape. If they’re truly repentant and ashamed of their actions they would have returned the tape before the court order. Despite the judge’s order, the Young’s still have their hands on the sex tape. In our opinion, the Young’s actions speak louder than their claims. In our minds, the story that the sex tape was in Rielle Hunter’s trash doesn’t ring true.
