It was another dynamic day at SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics Defense + Security for our Cluster members. It was challenging to catch them when they didn't have a crowd of visitors at their exhibits so we could get a picture! But we did manage to capture IRGlare, OptiGrate - IPG Photonics, TwinStar Optics, L3Harris Technologies, Universal Photonics, Inc., and Optikos Corporation. Big thanks to our Board member Steffen Schneider from asphericon, who was attending and made time to help man the exhibit. It was great to see John Yoon, Ph.D., from SPIE, who is also a Board member, and stopped by to visit. And it was a treat to catch up with Rayhane "Ray" Ghane, PhD, from member company ficonTEC, who is presenting a paper and is on a panel. Our PhoenixD (Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD: Photonics, Optics, and Engineering - Innovation Across Disciplines) colloquium highlighted advances in optical technologies for AI and sensing applications. Dr.-Ing. Moritz Seyfried (FiconTEC GmbH) presented co-packaged optics as a key enabler for scaling AI systems beyond electrical interconnect limits. The talk covered multidisciplinary integration and critical processes such as sub-micron alignment, wafer-level testing, and data-driven optimization for high-throughput production. Prof. Wei Ren (Chinese University of Hongkong) focused on high-sensitivity infrared laser spectroscopy for gas sensing. Optical cavities and frequency combs enable detection down to ppt levels, combined with miniaturization and broadband analysis for complex environments. The seminar underlined the relevance of integrated optical systems across computing and sensing domains.
