U.S. public opinion on artificial intelligence remains sharply divided despite rapid advances and its increasing presence in daily life. As detailed in a new report by Statista and Semrush - Rewriting the U.S. e-commerce playbook - a June 2025 survey by Statista reveals that only 31% of U.S. adults describe themselves as "excited" about AI, while a larger 36% admit that the speed of AI development worries them.   When it comes to practical use, enthusiasm does not always translate into widespread adoption: just 20% say they like using AI for shopping, and an even smaller 17% consider themselves early adopters who rush to try new features. Conversely, skepticism remains pronounced - 26% report that they actively avoid AI and 30% claim they’re not convinced AI technology is as effective as it’s often portrayed to be.   Ethical concerns and trust in AI systems are also evident. Only 11% say they let AI "do the thinking" for them, while 18% use AI but don’t feel good about it, signalling unease despite engagement. Concerns over ethics, the speed of change and whether AI is being developed responsibly are still widespread. As AI's impact expands into areas like commerce, news and workplaces, public trust and perception will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping AI's integration into society. The United States has slid off the Top 10 most powerful passports for the first time since Henley & Partners started publishing their index 20 years ago. Where the U.S. appeared in rank seven last year when it enabled citizens to enter 188 countries without major restrictions, it has now dropped to rank 12, with visa-free entry to just 180. This is a level of freedom also experienced by passport holders in Malaysia. The U.S. passport has fallen a long way in the past decade, having appeared in first place in 2014. In the past year alone, several access changes drove the decline, including a loss of visa-free access to Brazil due to a lack of reciprocity. China then started to offer visa-free travel to several European nations, but notably excluded the U.S. from the change. This was followed by changes from Papua New Guinea and Myanmar, which further eroded the US score while boosting other passports. Newer changes included Somalia’s launch of a new eVisa system and Vietnam’s decision to exclude the U.S. from its latest visa-free additions. Singapore once more is recognized as having the most powerful passport in the world, with its citizens able to visit 193 countries and territories without a prior visa, according to the Henley Passport Index. South Korea comes in second place, with its citizens able to visit 190 countries, followed by Japan with access to 189 countries, then Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain and Switzerland with access to 188. At the other end of the scale, the situation is very different. For passport holders in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, for example, travel is much more restrictive. The Afghan passport wields the least power of the ranking, with just 24 destinations permissible visa-free. The situation in Syria and Iraq isn’t much better, at 26 and 29 destinations, respectively. Henley & Partners also created a list called the Henley Openness Index, showing how many other nationalities can enter a given country without a visa. Despite the U.S. having access to 180 destinations visa-free, it only allows 46 other nationalities to enter without a visa, placing it in rank 77 out of 199 countries and territories. The Henley Passport Index draws from data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), including 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has worked to cut its reliance on Russian energy. Through embargoes and initiatives like REPowerEU, Russian oil imports dropped by over 90% between Q1 2021 and Q2 2025, and gas imports fell from 39% to 13%. Still, challenges remain. Some EU countries, like Hungary and Slovakia, are hesitant to fully cut ties due to infrastructure limits and the cost of switching suppliers. Reaching the EU’s goal of phasing out Russian energy by 2027 won’t be easy — but major progress has already been made. #statista #energy #EU

🧠 Mental health: A global challenge One in five people who have lived through war or humanitarian crises in the past decade are likely to experience mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD—significantly higher than the global average of one in 14 (Lancet, 2019). The World Health Organization emphasizes that emergencies not only worsen existing mental health conditions but also create new challenges—like poverty, displacement, family separation, and substance use. According to WHO’s Mental Health Atlas 2024, the global average is 13 mental health professionals per 100,000 people. If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious or depressed, please reach out to your family or friends, a mental health professional or contact a crisis line in your area. You are not alone, help is available❗ #MentalHealth #GlobalHealth #HealthEquity #HumanitarianCrisis #WorldMentalHealthDay

The High Cost of Natural Disasters ⛈️ In honor of today's International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we are highlighting the significant human and financial impact of natural disasters. Since 1980, the global economy has incurred $6.9 trillion in losses from natural disasters, yet barely one-third of these damages were covered by insurance, leaving countless people to bear the burden themselves. Disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes cause the most extreme losses. Events like Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and the three major hurricanes in 2017 pushed annual costs into the hundreds of billions. The tragic earthquake in Bogo, Philippines, on September 30, 2025, which resulted in at least 75 deaths and 1,200 injuries, serves as a recent reminder of the devastating human toll and the destruction to infrastructure that disasters can cause. Major disasters can result in damages exceeding $100 billion; the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused a record-breaking loss of $235 billion. This uneven burden is particularly felt in developing countries, where fewer than 10 percent of people are insured. On this global day of awareness, it is essential to focus on building the resilience of vulnerable communities and improving insurance solutions in the face of more frequent and severe catastrophes driven by climate change. #statista #disasterriskreduction #climatechange #resilience #insurancegap #naturaldisasters
